An Indian woman living in Nigeria has taken to the media to address the question of her Igbo husband’s dowry payment.
The Indian lady, who is married to an Igbo man with two kids, decided to address a question that was always thrown at her in Asaba, Nigeria, where she lives. According to her, people frequently asked if she paid her Igbo husband’s dowry. Conceding the accusation, she goes on to explain how it works.
It is common, though unusual knowledge, that Indian women pay the groom’s dowry. She explained that indeed it’s a culture of theirs: the bride’s family pays a dowry or a gift to the husband’s; it could be land, money, gold car etc. She adds that Indians have been trying to eradicate the tradition because they believe marriage is a mutual agreement.
That been popular, due to the vast population in her country, some families in India insist on it practice. The idea behind the tradition is that if you gift the man a car, it is your daughter who would drive it, give him a refrigerator and your daughter gets access to cold water, and the list goes on and on.
In respect to her own marriage, because she came from an educated family, they refused to practice the tradition. They don’t pay anything, and they don’t care to ask for their sons when they are to get married. But, just like many other Indian families, her family gave her husband a gold chain as a gift.
This kind of gift is saved from when the girl was a child in, preparation for her marriage.
She indulged people to decease from stating that men get bought by Indian women, as it is not true.
