A Nigerian lady who at first glance will never be thought of as Nigerian, has taken to her social media page to share how this situation usually pans out for her.

The lady whose father is British and whose mother is half Lebanese and half Nigerian, took to her page to share how Nigerians interact with her when they meet her with her “black” Nigerian mother. Seeing that she is white confuses them at times, and when they try to speak pigeon English to her, her accent gives her away. Despite growing up in Nigeria, her accent is nowhere to a Nigerian’s. Her stay in Ghana has affected her African side more, and she tends to sound Ghanaian when she tries to be Nigerian.

When she is in Nigeria, Nigerians accept and relate to her because of her mom, but when she is abroad and she hears a Nigerian speak, she gets pricked to identify with them, but her looks and accent discourage her. Again, when people hear her call her mother “mommy” with a “posh” accent, they assume that it’s not a Nigerian thing.

Plus, her mother is Itsekiri, which is not one of the most well-known Nigerian tribes; so people conclude that she can not be Nigerian. A netizen would encourage her with the fact that being a Nigerian is not a look but a nationality

She would also critique Europeans and Americans who try to do the Nigerian accent. According to her even the Nigerians who grew up abroad never get it right. “Y’all don’t hit the nail on the head”, she added.
