A female master of ceremonies locally known as Alaga Iduro expressed surprise after discovering a cutlass among the items presented as eru iyawo at a traditional Yoruba wedding.

The traditional wedding officiant, who appeared unfamiliar with including the farm tool in the bride’s engagement items, was reportedly shocked to see the cutlass among the gifts.

Eru iyawo refers to the gifts the groom’s family presents to the bride’s family during a traditional Yoruba wedding. The items often include foodstuffs, drinks, clothing, and other gifts specified by the bride’s family.

However, the cutlass, among other items, caught the Alaga Iduro off guard, as she had never seen it in marriage gifts before. It was hung beside the tubers of yam that were arranged on a wooden rack.

The moment has drawn attention to the different items that may be included in traditional wedding lists, depending on the families and their customs.
