Ken Saro-Wiwa’s son dies of Coronavirus in London

Ken Saro-Wiwa's son dies

Menegian, one of the children of late Ogoni environmental activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa, has died of Coronavirus in a hospital in the United Kingdom.

His death was announced on Facebook by his sister, Noo, this afternoon. She wrote

”We said goodbye to my brother, Gian, on Monday. He had Covid-19 combined with underlying health conditions. Gian was the smartest and most talented out of all of us: a champion sprinter at school, a poet, an artist, budding engineer, a self-taught guitarist and pianist. But mental health issues limited his life from age 16 onwards.
I took this photo of him a few months ago before he was hospitalised. We were singing Hysteria by Def Leppard, a song we both love. Although the side-effects of medication altered his athletic physique, this photo still captures Gian’s essence: a kind and beautiful soul, always wanting the best for his family, always praying for our future success while being eternally optimistic about his own. And, of course, always loving his music. He leaves a wonderful son, Louis.
(Menegian Saro-Wiwa, 1970-2020)”

He was 50 years old. May his soul rest in peace, Amen.

Sandra is now claiming that Nicola is bitter because she thinks herself and Ubi are dating. Here’s a post she shared on IG earlier this afternoon,

Lockdown: Sex Workers Lament As Clients Shun Their Services

Sex Workers Lament

This is not the best of times for commercial sex workers in Lagos owing to the lockdown occasioned by Covid-19 pandemic and the fact that the Minister of Health had stated that the deadly virus could be transmitted sexually.

P.M.EXPRESS investigation revealed that virtually all the brothels and hotels had practically been shut across the State. The workers were either indoors in the hotel rooms doing nothing or waiting in vain for clients to patronize them.

Some of the brothels visited in Mushin, Agege, Igando, Ikotun, Ejigbo and Isolo, Akowonjo etc were deserted without customers coming to the place to drink and patronize the workers.
Some of the workers have relocated to join their friends and relatives in order to reduce the pile of debts incurred for renting their rooms from the management to save cost.

Few of the workers, who were seen at the various hotels, were lamenting over the ugly situations they found themselves since the stay at home directive over Coronavirus took effect.

One of the workers, simply identified as Maureen in Idimu, told P.M.EXPRESS that their initial thought was that the lockdown will last for few days before they continue rendering full services but regretted that it has dragged too long and their targets for the year will be greatly affected.

Maureen explained that the situation became worse as some men have chosen to shun sex at this period; nobody comes to patronize them even on short time basis and the bills are pilling up for some of the workers who had been waiting for normal businesses to resume to no avail.

Another worker, Miss Joy, said that what surprised her the most was that there were some clients who usually come to ask for sex on credit from them promising to pay when things get normal. She lamented that even their prominent patrons do not show up again and they were finding it difficult to feed and maintain themselves.

“Now, I have realised that this business will not sustain me to take care of my family. I will quit after the lockdown” Joy said.

P.M.EXPRESS investigation revealed that most men stopped patronising those places due to fear of contracting the virus while some withdrew due to lack of money to spend at this period.

It was equally gathered that some married men have used the lockdown to reconcile with their spouses in their various homes and there was no need to go outside for such practices for now.

“Coronavirus will surely get to every state” – NCDC

Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Chikwe Ihekweazu has disclosed that the novel Coronavirus will get to every state in Nigeria.

Ihekweazu revealed this on Channels Television Sunrise Daily programme, while comparing the virus to Lassa Fever. He also revealed that it has not been easy stopping the spread of Coronavirus.

The NCDC DG said,

“We have responded to Lassa smoothly and nobody shut down the country because it wasn’t necessary, the response was fairly efficient.

“Now, COVID-19 is on a much larger scale – at the moment in 22 states but it will grow to every state in Nigeria, there is no reason why it won’t – it is a respiratory virus.

“We just activated the lab in Kano a few days ago. So, these are the results of the increased testing capacity that we are providing for the country.

“The tests are fairly robust; I can’t say 100 per cent, but they are as close to that as possible. We had the highest number of positive cases in a single day.

“Since the onset of the outbreak, we are testing a lot more (and) that is beginning to show. It is only so much we can do from NCDC; we are working with the state governments.

“They actually own the response at the state and local levels, and we need all of them now. We really have to face the reality that this is an outbreak, this is a virus.

“It will circulate in Nigeria, absolutely no doubt and our responsibility as a country is to prepare more, to be able to detect, isolate, treat, list contacts, and stop transmission.”

The disease has affected 407 individuals in Nigeria across 22 states. While 128 persons had been discharged, Nigeria has recorded 12 deaths.

Nigeria doctor who tested negative after close contact with Kano index case of Coronavirus patient who lied about his travel history, shares his story

Nigeria doctor

A Nigerian doctor, Dr James King, practicising in Kano state, who had close contact with the index case of COVID-19 in the state, has shared his experience.

Dr King in a post shared on social media on Thursday morning, said the index case hid his travel history from the doctors when he came in to report a case of fever and headache and in the process, exposed them to the virus. It was later discovered he had traveled to Germany and the US before arriving Kano state via Abuja on March 25th.

The doctors , nurses and a non-medical staff who had contacts with the index case, went into isolation and were tested for the virus. Thankfully, their results came back negative for the virus yesterday.

Read Dr King’s encounter of what transpired as he shared on his Instagram page today April 16.

I wanted to be silent about this. But since it’s already on Radio and TV stations, ..and the concerns about my health by many who have reached out, …it has become imperative for me to tell my COVID-19 mileu.

Here’s the story…

One Alhaji BZ (not real names initials) came to our hospital.

He had COVID-19.

Unknown to us all.

While evaluating him, he was asked,
“How can we help you sir?”

He replied,
“I’ve been having fever and general body weakness. Please admit me.”

Inquired,
“For how long now?”

He replied
“For some days?

More questions,
“Do you have cough, breathlessness or palpitations?”

Alhaji BZ replied,
“No”, I don’t have any of that.”

Many other medical questions were asked and documented.

Furthermore,
“Did you travel recently?”

He denied,
“No.”

He was further evaluated, examined and admitted into a private room upstairs on Friday evening.

He had contact with two doctors (my boss and I), three nurses and one non-medical staff.

It was unknown to us that he had travelled to Germany, the US before returning to my resident state.

Via Abuja travelling by road.

While travelling by road he stayed briefly in Kaduna before arriving to my resident state on the 25th March, 2020.

He lied about all these travel history to us.

He also lied about the pertinent Coronavirus symptoms, ..breathlessness and cough.

He also hid the fact that he had been to several medical outlets since his return to the state.

And importantly, he hid the fact that that his samples were taken by NCDC for COVID-19 testing.

Ofcourse he denied and lied about all the above in order for him to have our medical care.

Putting us all and many others at high risk of the novel pandemic.

We also learnt that during his illness before coming to us, he was attending Friday Mosque prayers, naming ceremonies and other gatherings.

While on admission in our facility, a day after admission being a Saturday, we had a Nollywood-like dramatic entrance into our facilityby health officials with massive Police presence.

The major road our hospital was was blocked and made a Security Restricted area.

He was the index case in the state.

The officials told us that we had a man in our facility that just tested positive for COVID-19.

Luckily, my boss, a reknown Neurosurgeon, who was still in theatre while rounding up a delicate Spinal Cord Pedicle Screw Fixation+Laminectomy had to be told.

He derobed.

And met the officials.

There was an order from the Governor of the state to lock down the hospital immediately.

The former Ambassador was whisked away to an quarantine centre outskirt of the state.

We were placed on isolation too in our hospital facility.

Samples were taken from our staff for covid-19 testing.

For many days, we could not physically reach our families or anyone.

Isolated up in the hospital.

The waiting began.

Days rolled by.

Anxiety.

All thoughts crept in.

At some point, my boss and I told ourselves that if it’s either positive or negative, we will beat the disease.

Infact we told ourselves that “eventhough its death, we will be dying while in service to humanity.”

When the days rolled by, we began to have some peace.

IInfact we were playing Fela Anipolakuti’s music loudly.

For many days.

Then the tension began.

The result of our COVID-19 will be released in a few more days.

The music volume daily increases. ?

Phones call and prayers from family and friends.

At last the result came out yesterday afternoon.

And it was NEGATIVE for all is us.

We are still waiting to be released from isolation.

Two Police vehicles have been in our gate since all these started.

They were excited yesterday when our result was released and found to be negative.

They are waiting for directives to let us go home.

We thank Almighty God for everything.

We will keep saving lives.

No matter the cost.

Please observe…

75-year-old grandmother arrested

A 75-year-old grandmother has been arrested by the Ebonyi State Police Command, for flogging and pouring pepper into the eyes and genitals of her 11-year-old house help.

Mrs Comfort Obi was arrested by police officers from Ekumenyi Police Station on Tuesday April 14, after a neighbour, Mr Osita Ezechukwu reported the abuse.

The victim whose body was covered with scars from previous abuses, has been living with the elderly woman since her father who has an eye impairment cannot take care of her and her four siblings. It was further gathered that the abuse victim’s mother is late.

Recounting her ordeal, the 11-year-old househelp said she was recently abused because she took the old woman’s juice and biscuit.

She said;

“My Madam usually invites outsiders to flog me whenever I offend her. She also pours grinded pepper into my private part and eyes. This one she did to me now was because I was hungry and I took her biscuit and juice to eat”

Coronavirus: History will not be kind to us if Nigerians go hungry – Tinubu tells FG

APC Chieftain, Bola Tinubu has appealed to the federal government to protect Nigerians from hunger amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

The former Governor of Lagos said that history will not be kind to the federal government if Nigerians go hungry amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

The former Governor also called for the expansion of the school feeding programme and push for debt relief.

In his words ;

“We dare not underestimate the twin dangers posed by the virus itself and the economic consequences of the public health response. Our goal must be that the people live neither with disease nor in hunger. This situation presents a historic chance to establish a more beneficial social contract between the government and the governed.

“If we so utilize this moment, it will be recorded as a pivotal one in our national history. If we allow this moment to slip, history will not be obliged to treat us with great mercy.

“The worst of this dark potential can be avoided if the government is prepared to act in ways that not only feed people but protect the basic contours of our private-sector economy so that it can more quickly revive once normal conditions return.

Suspension/amendment of the 5% deficit limit of the fiscal responsibility law which prohibits fiscal deficit from exceeding 5% of the nation’s gross domestic product. “The best step would be to suspend the 5% budgetary limit for this fiscal year. Alternatively, the limit should be raised to 25-30% to allow the federal government more room to make the minimum expenditures necessary to save the economy and the people,” he wrote.
Emergency sustenance payments: This, he said, could be paid to households for monthly needs or as emergency unemployment insurance to people who can prove they have been laid off due to the crisis or as payroll support to businesses to help them maintain staff so they can return to full operation when normalcy returns.
Re-establishment of agricultural market and commodity boards for strategically important crops to stabilise farmers’ income and consumer prices.
Import suppression through luxury taxes, higher tariffs and higher import processing fees due to the partial closure of ports of entry due to the coronavirus.
Conditional interest-free loans from the Central Bank of Nigeria to large businesses. Tinubu said some of the conditions could be maintaining their workforce and even hiring an extra 10% for two or three months at reduced wages. “These additional workers should be youth hired under a temporary internship or training program.”

NSCDC official allegedly shoots driver dead in Abia State

NSCDC official allegedly shoots

A commercial bus driver was shot dead today, April 15, allegedly by an official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Isiala Ngwa Division, in Abia State.

The victim was reportedly carrying perishable and non-perishable food items in his car to deliver when he was stopped by the NSCDC official.

The driver and the official later got into an argument. The reason for the argument cannot be verified at the moment but some people have claimed that it was over bribe.

The driver allegedly tried to drive off during the argument and the NSCDC official allegedly shot at him, killing him

The death of the driver led to heavy traffic on the Umuikaa, Isiala Ngwa South LGA axis of Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway as youths in the area took to the road to protest the alleged killing.

The incident was said to have angered youths in the area who attempted lynching the NSCDC official.

The NSCDC official narrowly escaped death by running into a police station in the area.

According to an eyewitness who spoke to DailyPost: “the driver carrying tomatoes among other food items approached the Civil Defence checkpoint where they (NSCDC) were enforcing the order of the governor (Ikpeazu) on COVID-19 after they flagged him down.

“We didn’t know what they were discussing initially, but when tempers started flaring, the driver was accusing him (NSCDC) personnel of extortion.

“The driver said that he can’t give him more than what he has given (bribe) to him (the NSCDC official), insisting that the restriction order doesn’t affect drivers carrying food items.

“When the temper was high, we left and were watching the drama from afar. The driver tried driving off and the next thing we heard was a gunshot. We all ran away and by the time we came back, we saw the driver in the pool of his blood.”

The state governor has expressed shock over the development.

In a press release signed by the State Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu and made available to newsmen in Umuahia on Wednesday, the state governor condemned the act.

The governor also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and not to take law into their hands.

The statement reads: “Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has directed the State Commissioner of Police to immediately apprehend the suspect(s) and fully investigate the circumstances leading to the latest unfortunate incident at Umuikaa junction and ensure that justice is done swiftly.

“We commiserate with the family and friends of the deceased and, once again, call on security agents bearing arms to be responsible and follow relevant service rules regarding the use of firearms.”

No Chinese doctor has tested positive for Coronavirus – Lai Mohammed

Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has debunked claims of one of the Chinese doctors who arrived the country to help in the fight against Coronavirus, testing positive for the virus.

The Minister dispelled the claim while speaking at the Presidential Task Force (PTF) daily briefing today, April 15.

Lai Mohammed who urged Nigerians to discard reports which is not from the daily briefings or the website of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), also debunked report of members of the National Assembly sharing a N700 million fund.

He said;

“Whether members of the National Assembly are sharing N700 million, like I said, just as we are trying to fight and contain Coronavirus, a lot of energy is also being expended in fighting fake news.

“To the best of my knowledge, I’m not aware that any such money has been given to members of the National Assembly, but I know that fake news is not abating.

“This morning, there was a message that went viral, to the effect that one of the Chinese doctors tested positive and that news was supposed to have emanated from the Twitter handle of the federal government. I want to say, to the best of our knowledge here, there’s no such thing.

“I’ve also just received two hate dramas and other fake news while I was sitting here, which I’ve been unable to open. But we will continue always to debunk fake news and we’ll try our best to timely give you information about the COVID-19, either through our daily press briefings or through the website of the NCDC and the task force”
