Dr Osagie Ehanire, Nigeria’s Minister of Health, has appealed to Nigerians to donate their buildings to serve as isolation centres.
Worried by the increasing number of cases in the country, Ehanire made the appeal at a press conference in Abuja. He said although there are no shortage of bed spaces yet, he is making the appeal ahead of time so that the facilities will be readily available when they need to be used.
“I have appealed to citizens to make their property available temporarily for this purpose. There are many property owners who will come up and donate to state governments for a period of time to be used for this function. We are not out of space now but we are making the appeal ahead of time so that we have these facilities ready.
Nigeria currently has 1932 confirmed cases of COVID19 with 58 deaths. So far, 319 patients have been discharged.
NCDC DG, Chikwe Ihekweazu on Thursday April 30th, disclosed that Lagos is currently running short of bed spaces for COVID19 patients.
Two lorries transporting passengers concealed among livestock from Kano State into Kaduna have been intercepted and turned back.
The lorries were said to have slipped through the security checks at the Kaduna-Kano border, sneaking in humans concealed behind livestock, motorcycles and other goods.
However, security officials at the border discovered the hidden human cargo and prevented the vehicles from entering the state.
“We got information that these lorries had come in from the Kaduna-Kano border and had progressed up to Gwargwaji in Zaria LGA.
“We then proceeded to nab them further along within the same local government,” Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, said.
He added, “The passengers were cleverly concealed behind random goods, motorcycles and animals.
“Thankfully, once again we have got the better of them, and we have turned them back in compliance with the Kaduna State Government’s ban on inter-state travel.
“Operatives are actively enforcing the directives at all entry points, and passengers have similarly been intercepted from other routes and escorted out to the borders.”
Interstate travel has been banned in Nigeria as a measure to curb the spread of Coronavirus in Nigeria.
Harrowing footage from a Brazilian city hit by the Coronavirus pandemic shows mass graves being dug as authorities struggle with the pandemic.
Manaus, in north-western Brazil, with a population of 1.7m, is continuing to bury bodies at an alarming rate as deaths surge due to the pandemic.
A cemetery in the city has seen a 500 per cent increase in the number of bodies it has to bury now compared with before the Covid-19 outbreak.
Aerial footage of the cemetery shows the scale of burials taking place in the region. Coffins arrive wrapped in plastic film to help stop the spread of the disease.
The surge of Covid-19 cases in Brazil is spawning fear that construction workers, truck drivers and tourists from Latin America’s biggest nation will spread the disease to neighbouring countries that are doing a better job of controlling the coronavirus.
The country’s borders remain open, there are virtually no quarantines or curfews and President Jair Bolsonaro continues to scoff at the seriousness of the disease.
When questioned about the number of Coronavirus victims in the country, Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, said he “doesn’t do miracles“.
“What do you want me to do?” he asked. “I am Messias (his full name is Jair Messias Bolsonaro), but I don’t do miracles.”
There have been at least 79,361 confirmed coronavirus cases in Brazil, with 5,511 deaths.
Earlier this week, it was reported cases of Covid-19 are overwhelming hospitals, morgues and cemeteries across Brazil as the country veers closer to becoming one of the world’s pandemic hot spots.
At the main Taruma cemetery, a new area has been opened where undertakers were digging rows of graves and now just trenches for five coffins at a time.
The Taruma mayor’s office said the city’s funeral system was collapsing and running out of coffins.
In Rio de Janeiro, cemeteries have accelerated construction of above-ground vaults to entomb deceased patients.
Undertakers in Manaus even resorted to burying coffins one on top of the other this week, but the city stopped the practice after grieving relatives protested.
A white lady has died mysteriously after she ignored warnings from social media users when she revealed her plans to dabble into voodoo and summon an African spirit known as Papa Legba.
Katelyn “Kat” Restin, a 19-year-old lady from Virginia, was found dead after she allegedly drowned in a bathtub according to one of her friends. People are blaming her death on her practicing Haitian Vodou summoning spells.
Restin died two days after she claimed that she saw Papa Legba apparently after a summoning spell people warned her not to try.
Papa Legba is one of the best known figures in African spirituality. He serves as an intermediary between man and the spirit world. Several movies have been made about him, including the American horror story “Coven“.
Kat Restin was part of a group on social media that practiced spells, and one day she decided to go into voodoo.
Twitter and Facebook users warned her not to try it but she insisted and said everyone should be allowed to practice whatever spirituality they want to practice.
She added: “Shut the f*** up and let me be.”
Some of her friends also defended her decision.
Three weeks after the post, and other posts showing her practicing voodoo, she did a post stating she saw Papa Legba and added that she was “scared“.
Unfortunately, Kat Restin died two days later.
Someone in her group, who claims to commune with the spirits, stated that they did a reading on the late Kat Restin and it wasn’t Papa Legba she saw but another dreaded spirit, Baron Samedi.
Friends have taken to Twitter and Facebook to mourn Restin’s death. However, some said she doesn’t deserve their pity.
Restin’s obituary states that her cause of death was sudden.
The obituary reads,
“Katelyn is survived by her daughter Aaliyah Hope Restin, mother Terry Restin, father John Restin, brothers Kevin and Ryan (Blakely) Restin; aunts, Margaret Volk, Mary (Rick) Page, Betty (Joe) Aukward; Uncle, Eric (Susan) Restin, and many cousins and other relatives, all of who she loved and touched deeply.”
The family has set up a GoFundMe for Katelyn’s death.

“The moment the current pass through to her hands and went through her body then she tried throwing the phone. That was when we noticed the phone fell on her chest and burnt her chest leaving on her skin the scale of a burnt pressing iron. At this point we had a faint sound from her slowly lying her back to the ground.
“U know she’s a lovely queen. We had thought she was making a selfie video all this while until we saw smoke from her chest. Immediately we called for help, they brought her out and we start blowing air for ventilation”.

The federal government, via an address by the Head of States, President Muhammadu Buhari some days back, imposed a two weeks total lock down on Kano state following reports of mysterious deaths in the state.
The state’s governor has now appealed to the FG to ease the lockdown, because its residents are running out of food.
Ganduje made the appeal while inaugurating a panel of experts led by the president of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria Musa Borodo, to support the state task force technical committee.

We would love the federal government to relax the lockdown for a period of time to enable people stock their homes, especially now that majority of us are fasting. About 10 days after lifting the nationwide lockdown, which prompted mass celebrations on their streets, Ghana has now recorded 1,032 new cases of coronavirus.
The Republic of Ghana has recorded more than 1,000 additional cases of COVID-19 since the country lifted its lockdown.

Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Ehanire Osagie has revealed that 113 Nigerian health workers have tested positive for Coronavirus.
The Minister shared this while responding to questions at the daily Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 briefing on Thursday April 30. Osagie said the infected health workers represent about 6 per cent of the total 1,728 infected persons.
Osagie said;
“Latest figures we have is that there are about 113 people in the health sector infected with COVID-19. Although they are not all public health workers, there are good numbers from private hospitals.
“If you hear us speaking here frequently against trying to treat coronavirus in private clinics, we are actually referring to those people who do so without having necessary precautions and training because they risk infecting themselves and go home and give this infection to their family.
“Healthcare workers who have no training have no business handling coronavirus.”
A Nigerian doctor, Babafemi Taiwo is leading a major study on an antiviral drug named Remdesivir that appears to be effective in treating COVID-19.
CNN interviewed Dr Babafemi Taiwo to talk about the result of Remdesivir in treating Coronavirus. Preliminary results of Remdesivir show it can help hospitalized COVID-19 patients recover faster.
Though Remdesivir, an antiviral drug made by Gilead Sciences, appears to help patients with Coronavirus recover faster, it does not significantly reduce death, according to preliminary data from the National Institutes of Health.
“The data shows that Remdesivir has a clear cut, significant, positive effect in diminishing, the time of recovery,” the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr Anthony Fauci said during a meeting between president Trump and Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards.
Here’s a video of Dr Babafemi Taiwo speaking to CNN about the promising results of Remdesivir in treating COVID-19,

Nigerian singer, Reekado Banks had a brief heated exchange with one of his followers on Twitter when the latter tweeted his sudden realization that the singer actually makes good music.
@Famimora_ on the platform randomly tweeted that the singer actually makes good songs, but the context with which he made his stance known caused a debate among tweeps.
@Famimora_ had simply tweeted,
Lol. Reekado actually has good songs.
The interpretation of his tweet by the singer is what has tongues wagging on the microblogging platform… Reekado Banks interpreted @Famimora_’s tweet as one that is just coming to the realization that he “actually” makes good songs.
Obviously disgusted by the tweet, Reekado Banks resorted to coming for the guy by telling him that making good music is what he’s about and he’s been doing it for six years now.
He wrote,
What is the ‘lol’ for , what is the ‘actually’ for? Na my job, been doing it for 6yrs now. If you don’t expect me to have good songs, the joke is on you ! Musically, no one knows more than Don jazzy that introduced me to the game, so fuck you and the useless surprise.
@Famimora_ —possibly a man of few words— then responded by plainly calling the singer “an idiot” and stood by what he said. Following Reekado’s flare as regards the inceptive tweet, Twitter users have had mixed reactions to the whole saga.
Some people read no deep meaning to @Famimora_’s tweet as they considered it harmless and blamed Reekado’s flaring up on his “insecurities” which probably emanated from when he had a rift with Burna Boy a while ago… while others actually felt @Famimora_’s tweet was actually a subtle diss to the singer.

As the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus pandemic) takes an intense twist, with its prevalent negative effect on individuals, households, businesses and health systems, leading financial services provider, First City Monument Bank (FCMB), is stepping up the tempo of its interventions through various humanitarian gestures.
As a caring and responsive Bank, FCMB has ensured the stability of its robust digital channels thereby enabling customers to have full access to financial transactions and other services, while also helping the government, communities and individuals to mitigate the impact of the pandemic.
The institution’s intervention has been hinged on providing relief across a range of areas spanning across testing, the provision of PPEs (personal protective equipment), food for the very needy and ease of doing business for small and medium scale firms.
By far, FCMB’s most significant contribution – of N250 million – has been to the intervention initiative set up by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in partnership with the private sector, to assist the Federal Government respond effectively to COVID-19, known as the Private Sector Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID).
The fund will also support households and businesses to mitigate the impact of the virus, through the building of isolation and treatment centres, providing personal protective equipment and distributing food to over 10 million of the most economically vulnerable Nigerians.
Also, FCMB is providing relief items to challenged individuals and households across Nigeria affected by the lockdown by working with various charities and state governments. The palliatives include Personal Protective Equipment for health workers and food items to sustain a large section of the population whose means of livelihood have been affected by COVID-19 and the prevalent lockdown.
In addition, the Bank has provided support to coalition, coordinated by Babban Gona Farmer Services Nigeria (an agricultural franchise), which aims to provide meals for 1 million vulnerable Nigerians every week. This will go a long way to sustain a large section of the population whose means of livelihood have been affected by COVID – 19 and the prevalent lockdown.
In partnership with 54gene, FCMB is also sponsoring the testing of 3,000 people in Ogun state to determine their COVID-19 status. This support is complementing the State’s effort to determine and mitigate the extent of the spread of the pandemic.
The financial institution is equally supporting borrowing customers by providing payment moratoria during this period, to ensure they are able to survive and continue to pay their workers.
FCMB has continued to distinguish itself through innovation and the delivery of exceptional offerings and the institution firmly believes that the nation will emerge stronger and much more resilient at the end of the pandemic.
