Coronavirus: Kaduna refuses entry to trailers conveying passengers from Kano

Kaduna refuses

Trailers conveying passengers from Kano were turned back on Monday April 27, at the state’s boundary with Kaduna state.

Kaduna State Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan said the incident occurred at Sabon Gida village in Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State, which shares boundaries with Kiru Local Government Area of Kano State.

Aruwan said the drivers tried to abuse the exemption from movement restriction granted to vehicles conveying essential goods.

He told journalists;

“As you can see, we are here at the border with our sister state of Kano to assess the level of compliance with the travel restriction, and suddenly intercepted long vehicles carrying passengers into Kaduna State.

“They abused exemption as you can see, we found dozens of people hidden and well-concealed.

“The good thing is they have not entered Kaduna State and we will turn them back to wherever they came from.

“Similarly, we have turned back dozens of passengers, and we will sustain the tempo in compliance with the Kaduna State Government’s directives.

“We are having some problems with those beating security through remote areas with motorcycles but we will go back to the drawing board.”

Inmates of Sapele prison set the facility on fire (video)

Inmates from the Sapele Correctional Service on Monday set the facility on fire partly because 25 inmates were granted amnesty by the state government, but only three persons have been released.

According to an eye witness, they were throwing things from “inside-out” as a form of protest. It was reported that they sighted tribalism in the release of the three inmates.

They also protested the alleged lack of food and water. Security operatives and firefighters were immediately mobilized to the scene to ensure that none of them escaped.

An official of the correctional center said;

“None of the inmate escaped during the riot aside one building that was set ablaze by the inmate which about three offices were affected. The situation has been brought under control.

“The Delta State Comptroller of Correctional Centres has just arrived with the Police Area Commander in Sapele as well as the Divisional Police Officer. The Chairman of Sapele council is also here.

“What the inmates are saying is that they are not happy that only three of their colleagues were released when the state Chief Judge visited us some days back. They are demanding more people should be freed to decongest the place.”

Woman Assaulted By Policemen In Osun Demands For N200 Million Compensation

Woman Assaulted By Policemen

Mrs Adetola Abdulazeez, the woman who was assaulted by two policemen enforcing the lockdown directive in Osun State, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu, demanding a compensation of N200 million.

The mother of two was flogged by the policemen on her way to buy drugs for her relatives at a pharmacy in Odo Ori Market in Iwo, Osun State, on April 18.

The incident which attracted public outcry, including that of the Oluwo of Iwo and the Osun State government, also attracted the attention of the IGP who immediately ordered for the dismissal of the policemen.

However, the victim, through her lawyer Mr Pelumi Olajengbesi, in a pre-action notice submitted to the IGP on Monday and obtained by NAN, said her client was also demanding an apology for her battered image.

”We commend the swift intervention of the Inspector General of Police and that of other top Nigeria Police Force hierarchy, condemning the unprofessional conduct of the policemen involved and the assurance of disciplinary action.

”While we recognise the authority of the Nigeria Police Force in containing the movement of people during this COVID-19 crisis, we believe strongly that same must be done in compliance with the rule of law.

”The video of the disgraceful act meted out on our client has since gone viral on the internet and has ridiculed her publicly, as she was seen being battered like a common thief by men of the Nigeria Police Force.

”We hereby demand that the Nigeria Police Force should address a letter of apology to our client personally showing honest concern and contrition to begin to ameliorate the continuous sadness and depression she continues to suffer.

”That the payment of N200 million be made to our client as general damages for all the pain, trauma, bodily inconveniences and public ridicule amongst others, caused her and her family during this period,” he said.

Olajengbesi further stated that on behalf of the victim, he was also demanding the immediate prosecution of the officers involved in the criminal act, in the Nigeria open court.

He stated that security agents should discharge their duties during the lockdown in line with international best practices and in accordance with the guidelines stipulated by the United Nations.

In his reaction, the Force Public Relation Officer, Frank Mba, told NAN that the police had already dismissed the policemen in question and would prosecute them if need be.
Mba also said that the police had yet to see the woman’s petition on the demand of N200 million compensation and an apology letter.

The Nigeria Police Force had on April 24 through its official twitter handle said: “that Inspector Ikuesan Taiwo and Police Constable Abass Ibrahim, captured in a viral video assaulting a woman in Osun State, have been tried and found guilty.

”They have been dismissed from the Force. They will be arraigned in court for prosecution”.

Face masks made of clothes don’t prevent you from contracting disease, they only reduce spread of infection – NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has said the use of non-medical face masks, which include self-made or commercial masks or face covers made of clothes, only reduce and not prevent spread of diseases.

The agency in a statement released today said face masks made with cotton materials are more effective.

The statement in part reads

Non-medical face masks include self-made or commercial masks or face covers made of cloth, other textiles or other materials such as paper. They are not standardized and are not intended for use in healthcare settings or by healthcare professionals.

They serve to limit spread of droplets and offer some measure of protection to those around you.

The material of construction is usually cloth(textile fabric), non-woven wadding, or paper-like materials. For these Barrier Masks, 100% cotton is preferred though, polyester, linen or knit fabric can be used.

Simple test: If wearer can put off a flame from a cigarette lighter that is placed in front of the wearer, the mask is protective enough

Barrier face masks do not prevent you from contracting disease but, they have been found to contribute to reduce spread of infections when used widely in conjunction with other measures. Such measures include social distancing, not touching the face, eyes or mouth, washing of hands with soap for 20 secs or use of alcohol based hand sanitizers.

These face masks are recommended to be washed daily and preferably should be a double layer of fabric to increase the absorbency and effectiveness.

It must be noted that several washes, drying and stretching of the mask over time reduce the effectiveness of the mask.”

The agency came out with the clarification as different state governments and the Federal government have announced compulsory use of face mask as the nation continues to fight against the spread of COVID-19.

Atiku’s son, Mohammed Shares Experience After Recovering from COVID-19, Praises Health Workers

Mohammed Shares

Son of Nigeria’s former vice-president, Mohammed Abubakar, has recovered from COVID-19 after spending 40 days in the hospital.

In March, his father had announced that one of his sons tested positive for the disease after he returned from Switzerland.

In a statement on Monday, Mohammed said his experience as a COVID-19 patient humbled him as he never thought he would be one of those infected.

“I, Mohammed Atiku Abubakar, wish to inform Nigerians that I have finally been cleared and discharged after 40 days of coronavirus (Covid19) treatment,” he said.

“My discharge could not have come at a better time than in the Ramadan, a season marked by sacrifice and supplication to the Almighty Allah.

“I thank the Almighty Allah for my recovery from the dreaded infection and also wish to express my sincerest and deepest appreciation to Nigerians for their prayers and goodwill while I was being treated.

“In the course of life, we have no idea of what will happen to us because only the Almighty God knows our future. When the coronavirus first broke out in faraway China, I had no idea that I might be one of those to be infected. This is one of the everlasting lessons I can’t forget for the rest of my life. Indeed, I have been humbled by this experience.”

He hailed the federal ministry of health and other frontline health workers for their sacrifices and professionalism during this period.

Mohammed said the pandemic revealed the weakness in “our health sector” and brought the poor and the powerful to a common level.

“The coronavirus has caught the world off guard and sent us reeling for solutions. It also reveals the weaknesses of our health systems in the developing world. It’s an eye-opening experience for Nigeria and other developing nations,” he said.

“Thanks to coronavirus outbreak, we are now coming to terms with the necessity of adequate funding of our healthcare system. This disease has brought the rich, the poor and the powerful to a common level. This is the time our policymakers should reset our national priorities and give our health system adequate attention. No investment in our health sector is too much.

“No less important, our policymakers should also adequately fund research in vaccines and other drugs because of the uncertainties and challenges like the coronavirus. Once again, thank you for your support and prayers, may Allah show up for you at your appointed time of need.”

“God will punish the people that invented makeup,” Broda Shaggi said as the model was transformed with makeup to the point that her tribal marks were no longer visible.

People with tribal marks gets to be mocked almost every time whether they like it or not and for a makeup artist to conceal her tribal marks ; it’s because she wanted it or the agreement with the makeup. That girl deserves an apology and this video makes me mad because it’s not fucking funny.
People with tribal marks deserves to be respected and not to be mocked.
And even if she consented to the concealing of the tribal marks by her makeup artist, you making a joke about it mocks the makeup artist and the tribal marked lady. She might not speak for herself but I have said my mind, the video is simply a mockery video and it’s not funny

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Bola Tinubu and his wife, Remi Tinubu, have tested negative for COVID-19.

This was contained in a statement released by his spokesperson, Tunde Rahman, today April 27th.

Recall that last Friday 24th, Lateef Raheem, the 51-year-old former Chief Security Officer (CSO) to Tinubu died following complications of COVID19. He was said to have suffered from high blood pressure and diabetes which might have been complicated by his infection with COVID-19.

Following Lateef’s death, Tinubu requested for a test to be carried out on him, his family members and aides. The results came in today and they were negative. However, one of his aide’s reuslt came back positive.

Read the full statement from Tinubu’s media aide below

Covid-19 is a real and present threat. Those of us who discount it or claim it is a fabrication do a grave and dangerous disservice to the public well-being. Likewise, those who stigmatise people who may have been stricken by the virus also do a disservice by casting blame on the innocent and discouraging people from taking the COVID test. We cannot defeat this health menace through ignorance or by shaming one another. We can only beat it through transparency, knowledge and compassion. This, we have learned first-hand.

Following the death of our well-respected and beloved Chief Security Officer, Alhaji Lateef Raheem, NCDC medics took the wise precaution of taking samples from his body for testingto actually determine the cause of death.Today, the test results are back. The samples tested positive for Covid-19.

As a precautionary measure taken soon after the death of Alhaji Raheem, His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and all their aides took COVID-19 tests Saturday, April 25. The results of the tests were returned this morning.

Test results for both Asiwaju and Senator Tinubu were negative.

The results of one aide were positive. The rest of the staff was negative. The one staff member has been isolated in accordance with NCDC guidelines. Further contact tracing and COVID-19 tests are being conducted by the NCDC with regard to the relatives and possible contacts of that staff member.

Asiwaju has stressed that openness and transparency must be observed if we are to defeat this disease. There is no house immune to its entry. Contracting the virus should not bring social or moral stigma any more than contracting malaria or a common cold.

We cannot overcome this challenge by acting like it does not exist or by trying to conceal that someone may have it due to social shame. The culture of denial is counterproductive and will do great harm in our current situation.

Asiwaju asks that you not be afraid to be tested if you have any symptoms or if you believe you may have come in contact with someone who has been infected. We must do all we can to contain the spread of the virus and to well treat those of us who have been hit by it.

As you go about your day, we know you must find daily sustenance. Yet, please continue to do all you can to maintain social distance and to take all other public health measures to protect yourself and others. In this way, we all may contribute to halt the spread of this dangerous virus.

Tinubu Media Office,

Tunde Rahman.
