A Nigerian nurse in the United States who recovered from the dreaded Coronavirus, has opened up about her ordeal before recovering from the virus.
May Toba, a Nigerian United States-based nurse, mother of two and quite elated survivor of the Coronavirus, has relived her wrestle and recovery from the deadly disease.
She starts by saying,
People who are able to go to the hospital on time stand a better chance of surviving, but the thing is that they are asking people to self-quarantine because since it’s a virus, it will run its course and go by itself. Where it becomes complicated for many people is when they now have underlying illnesses like diabetes, asthma, cardiac problems, and pneumonia. I am diabetic, that’s what made mine worse.”
According to May, her Covid-19 ordeal all started with a temperature…
“I was having a bit of temperature; I own a thermometer, so I checked myself and found that it was 38.4. Usually, temperature is supposed to be between 35 and 37.5. I checked the first day, took paracetamol; I kept monitoring it daily and it kept increasing.
“The next day, I decided to go shopping with my son. I didn’t isolate because, to be honest, I was in denial that it could be Coronavirus. I thought it was common cold and general body weakness. By this time, people in London were panic-buying. Everybody was rushing to buy tissues and other things. So, I went shopping with my son, so that if London shuts down over the weekend, we would have food at home.
“I live in South-East London, so as we got to Woolich, I was short of breath and also couldn’t walk long distance without stopping to sit somewhere.
When we got home, I asked my son to offload the things we bought, that I needed to go to the hospital because I was having signs of COVID-19.
I drove down to the hospital where I work. I work in Accident and Emergency and we are the front-liners. Everything comes through our doors.
“On getting there, my colleague said to me: ‘May, you should know better. These are flu-like symptoms. Why don’t you just stay at home for seven days instead of coming to the hospital?’ I told her I wasn’t feeling right at all and that if I was, I wouldn’t come to the hospital.
“Being that I work in the hospital, they rushed me straight, took my samples, and did all my blood tests and x-rays. The COVID-19 test takes 48 hours before the result comes out. They started diagnosing it through the patient’s x-ray. When they do your chest x-ray, they can see from your lungs if there’s fluid in the lungs.
They detected fluid in my lungs and saw that it had started collapsing already. The doctor immediately told me that he’s going to intubate me and place me on a ventilator to allow my lungs rest. I agreed and was injected. That was the last I knew of what happened until four days later.
“According to my colleagues, I was incubated and sent to ICU. I woke up four days later and was told the water in my lungs had already dried up and the blood test had become better. They did another swab and it was negative, that’s how I was discharged.
When she was asked if she can trace how she got infected, May said,
“On the 13th, I worked with COVID-19 people. My matron and I were trying to see if it was on that shift I contracted it. I still think it was that shift; because that day, we had about five COVID-19 patients and we weren’t properly dressed at the time, because the WHO hadn’t told us what to wear.
It was the week I was sick that they now decoded that anybody attending to patients with any form of respiratory illness should gown up.
“I would say my symptoms took five days to show because I worked on the 13th and was admitted at the hospital on the 19th. But, you never can tell with this virus. I could have contracted it on the train on my way to work; it could have been brought home from school by any of my children. But I’m grateful to God that he didn’t allow COVID-19 kill me while trying to save others.
Asked if she had her children tested, May answered in the negative,
“They didn’t have to be tested because they don’t have any underlying illness and they have not shown symptoms. The government said there is no need for them to be tested. Sadly, a 13-year-old died in London yesterday and he didn’t have any underlying illness. He’s the youngest that has died in London so far. Every day, the death toll is keeps rising.”

In the last two decades, China became the biggest manufacturer of many countries. For instance, companies from the EU, the USA, and Canada depend a lot on Chinese factories as the workload is very cheap there. Donald Trump and the EU are not happy with the current situation as the European and American economy is sinking during the outbreak.
Nigeria and other African countries have a chance to start producing many products for the US and EU. Canada has attracted the attention of many start-ups in the last years, and African countries have a chance to follow their footsteps.
Canada, home of the good people, is becoming the next oasis for the parched tech industry and challenging USA’s Silicon Valley. More than ten years ago, Canada didn’t have the confidence to welcome start-up businesses to operate in their country. Now, after learning that substantial technology companies in the US are snatching university graduates, Canada has become more open and even hopeful that their graduates would be the next Steve Jobs or Elon Musk given the right opportunity and guidance.
The tech industry is always in search of talented human beings who can both become knowledgeable and creative-lateral-thinking leaders. That exists within the university graduates of Canada and abroad. Local universities are known to have guided a creative pool of readied skilled talents. The universities are now on board with having more tech businesses to come to create more jobs for their local expertise.
The Tech industry is something that Canada has made a higher priority. After getting power, Justin Trudeau’s team created a digital charter. It’s the main roadmap for Canadians to use the technologies and live well in the next few decades. Justin Trudeau wants to make an impact and he is doing a perfect job. African countries should follow his example and implement his decision. For instance, Justin Trudeau’s government made a big impact on the business industry by creating a digital charter. The first wave of digital charter happened in the iGaming industry. Online casinos and gambling venues were allowed to offer diverse games and conquer the global market. Online casinos got a chance to get the attention of international users when the Canadian government gave the green light on using cryptocurrencies. After implementing Bitcoin on iGaming platforms, gamers could use the crypto platforms for managing gaming funds. Gamers playing blackjack online for real money got a chance to use cryptocurrency along with Canadian dollars. Having the green light on the latest technologies changed the iGaming industry for good. Canadian casinos have seen a big rise in the global market and became the favorite entertaining spot for many international players. African countries should follow the steps of Canada and start implementing the latest technological advancements into daily life, especially in the gaming and entertainment industry to get more attention and recognition.
Get talents from immigrants
Progressive thinking leaders in Canada have also welcomed their doors to immigrants who are willing to share their talent in the tech world. The USA, with its new immigration policies led by President Trump, poses a threat to interested workers from abroad, declining skilled workforce immigrants. The USA isn’t so tasteful anymore. With Canada being the nearest immigration mecca, allowing progressive thinking and embracing human talent regardless of sex, gender, and race, the country is sure to be more pleasant to other tech geniuses apart from their homegrown.
The Canadian government is enticing immigrants to move in and build their lives there. The Global Skills Strategy of the Canadian government, which came to fruition last June 2019, offers work permits for exceptionally skilled and talented persons within 14 days. The Global Skills Strategy is very different from the USA’s H1-B status that has a 6-month waiting period.
Investing in higher education is a powerful weapon
The Canadian government is also prioritizing investments in higher education and research in the interdisciplinary approach, STEM – science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The Canadian government is also investing in artificial research via Toronto’s Vector Institute and offering tax incentives to scientific research and experimental development. Any sector of society that is backed up by the government has a higher percentage of being successful due to the boost and confidence and belief it receives.
Amazon goes for Canada
Amazon has recently released its shortlist of country candidates to host its Headquarters 2 (HQ2). One of the 20 cities is Toronto. Canada offered a very bold bid of zero public subsidy, making it the top choice for Amazon. Other towns are offering more significant subsidies than the allotted budget of Amazon to build its HQ2 of $5 Billion.
If Amazon pushes through in investing their HQ2 in Toronto, it will secure more jobs for the Canadians and immigrants, also opening the economy to more businesses. One of the best things about Canada is its single-payer health care system, which part of their taxes. Investing in Canada’s tech and business sector allows companies to take advantage of the low employee health care cost.
Canadians are known to have the right attitude when it comes to being good people. It is needless to say that creating start-up companies in the country is a great idea. You have creative, intelligent, and skilled good human beings as your employees or your CEO; then, you know the business will be skyrocketing.
Nigerian Media Personality, Daddy Freeze has shared his opinion about the ongoing talks about the dangers of using the 5G network and it is quit a different point of view.
Although there have been calls from Nigerian Elites to boycott the 5G network, Daddy Freeze is of the opinion that the main problem Nigeria is facing is WhatsApp Broadcast message which is a notable means of disseminating false information.
The fear and unfounded conspiracy theories being peddled on WhatsApp are our near and present danger, not 5G.
–
WhatsApp has become the medium for spreading the modern day ‘Jewish myths’ the Apostles complained about and when it’s in the hands of religious and superstitious people, it becomes a looming catastrophe.
–
Yes, there might be some level of danger associated with a technological breakthrough, but it’s a far cry from the exaggerated claims of WhatsApp theorists, who will go as far as spreading rumors about the COVID19 vaccine being the ‘antichrist’ and all manner of utter buffoonery.
–
If there is anything the Government needs to ban, its WhatsApp! Let our parents rest from being authorities on things they are clueless about sef.
–
This same Bill Gates that has bailed us out several times in the past and has been invaluable in the eradication of malaria, has all of a sudden become an agent of the antichrist, despite his warning the world several years ago, of its lack of preparedness should a pandemic arise.
–
5G is the future of the internet, we must be cautious about accepting it without proper testing, but rejecting it also is perilous; Nigeria is already in the technological Stone Age, must we remain there?

Big Brother Naija reality star, Natacha AKide otherwise known as Tacha has hit back at Ubi Franklin after the latter went live on his Instagram to hold interviews with Mercy Eke and her former manager, Teebillz.
Ubi Franklin revealed during the interview that Tacha had once sent him a private message begging him to use his connections to help her get into the Big Brother Naija house. He said when he couldn’t help her, she resorted to making videos on social media insulting him.
Following Ubi’s action and damning revealation, Tacha took to her own IG live to blast the music mogul and also explain why she sent him a private message.
She said ;
“Ubi Franklin, you have kids to take care of, you have people you owe money. Are you done focusing on that?”
“The nerve, the effrontery for you to actually say, ‘if there’s one person I didn’t want to see in the Big Brother house, it’s Tacha’. Who are you? Are you my God? Are you God? Who exactly are you to make a statement like that.”
“You have people to take care of. You have kids to take care of, you have people to face. You owe people money. Go and pay them. Go and pay the people that you owe. Get my name out of your mouth.
She accused Ubi of trying to stay relevant by using her own relevance.
She said ;
“I know, I understand, this whole thing, like when you’re irrelevant, you want to just try to suck out of someone’s relevance… And I get you and I know you’re happy because this ten minutes of fame now, you’d use it, you’d try to exhaust it because that’s what you do. You’re an opportunist. But please, in all of the lies that you tell, do not, I repeat, do not open your mouth to say that you got Tacha deals because you got Tacha absolutely nothing.
On the infamous DM, she said ;
“I have never met you before, I sent you a DM once, and like I said, it was a business proposal, you take it or you leave it, and you left it and that’s it.”
She then accused Ubi of trying to pit her and former Big Brother Naija housemate, Mercy, against each other.
Tacha said: “I really wish that women support each other. If women support each other, a moron such as Ubi Franklin will not wake up from his rented apartment and talk to me.
“You as a moron, you want to try to put I and Mercy up against each other, ’cause that’s exactly what you did during your Live yesterday, trying to like, ‘oh what do you think about this, what do you think about this?’ “
Tacha then appreciated Teebillz for standing up for her during his interview with Ubi.
In the live session , Teebillz bluntly told Ubi that he “f***ed up” and that he was “a bit disappointed” in him.

“The Lagos State Government will for the duration of this lockdown, in the first instance throughout the month of April, take full responsibility for the medical bills of all patients who fall under the following categories and present themselves at all our secondary health facilities, meaning our 27 general hospitals and the maternal and child health facilities that we have round the state. Emergencies, casualties, cases including registration, laboratory tests and surgeries will be treated free of charge.
Maternity cases and all pregnant women that have to do deliveries in this month of April, either caesarean or normal delivery will also be attended to free of charge. All admissions within this period will be free and treated free of charge in the month of April at the first instance. What this means is that those that have the above-listed conditions that will need to access the hospitals will be treated free” he said
Lagos state has 108 confirmed cses of Coronavirus. Following presidential directive, the state went into a lockdown beginning from March 30 to last for up two weeks.
Africa, specifically Nigeria has become a center of attraction for both investors and new businesses, irrespective of the failures by several Startups in the country.
There has been significant growth with respect to investment and business development in the country, and this cuts across all areas of the Nigerian economy; E-commerce, mobile technology, fintech startups among others.
Despite the many possibilities and potentials in the Nigerian market, not so many new businesses are able to scale through the fundamental stage, and as such are either forced to relocate or perhaps fold up, if they don ’t end up been purchased by a third party company.
Some of the companies of the internet era that have failed the test of time in Nigeria at the fundamental stage include a couple of prominent businesses and/or brands who came in with bold statements such as OLX (classified forum), Efritin, Fero, Wiko, Wechat, Tambo Mobile, Easy Taxi, among several others.
While some of these businesses were able to scale through for years before going pear-shaped, others could barely scale through beyond a year. It’s interesting to note that many of these businesses share similar key issues that led to their respective failures, including a lack of proper research before entering the market, spending investor funds and never hitting the profitability mark, misappropriation of resources, lack of employee confidence, etc.
Sadly, a couple of existing Start-ups with seemingly great potential are still towing this familiar path to failure. This article aims to look at some of these businesses, past and existent, and shed light on key issues leading to their eventual failure.
Efritin
Owned by Swedish company– Saltside Technologies, Efritin officially launched as a classified advertisement website in Nigeria back in August 2015, however, could not scale past the second year of establishment in the country due to many reasons, with mismanagement of funds and high cost of data being the most prominent.
According to the CEO, Nils Hammar, Efritinhad suffered greatly from the lack of excellent internet penetration and adoption. Nils also emphasized on how the high cost of data, as well as the unfavorable economic condition during that time, had impacted negatively on the business.“We have a long list of KPIs to evaluate how things are performing. Compared to other markets, we didn’t see the same progress in Nigeria” Nils told the media.
“I think the data cost in Nigeria is very high. In comparison to other parts of West Africa, Africa and the rest of the world, it is very expensive to use the internet for the vast majority of the people. It is very difficult for e-commerce and classifieds because they are quite late in the evolution of the internet industry,” Nils added.
With no much doubt, Efritin’s exit from the Nigerian market points to the fact that their business strives in Nigeria was a non-profitable one.
While Nils’ reasons for the closure are justifiable, insiders also have it that the main reasons for the company’s inability to survive in Nigeria are major because of funds mismanagement. Recall back to 2016, Efritin former MD, Zakaria Hersi was accused of stealing thousands of dollars, while turning a blind eye to the internal crises that played a major role in their demise, especially as they were not able to raise more funding to scale the business any further.
Another key issue would be the lack of proper market survey, considering that other online classified platforms like OLX were not doing fantastically great as at the time of establishment in Nigeria.
Easy Taxi
Easy Taxi is another business/startup that failed at the point of debut in Nigeria, or better still let me say could not survive the test of time. Following the reception of a seed-funding valued at $10 million, the ride-hailing service which started off in Brazil back in 2011 expanded to Africa among other regions, launching in Nigeria sometime in 2013 and commencing operations in Abuja. 3 years down the line, however, the company hit the halt button and exited Nigeria.
Easy Taxi Nigeria is a subsidiary of Africa Internet Group who had the likes of Rocket Internet, MTN, Millicom, among others as Shareholders. It was hard to believe they wouldn’t survive the Nigerian economy for that long given all the major stakes in the business, however, as with most businesses that have failed in the past, Easy Taxi was not immune to the harsh realities of market penetration in a challenging market as Nigeria’s, hence its exit.
As for the reasons for their failure in Nigeria, it is still very unclear as all effort to lay hands on actual information has been to no avail. For the obvious, Easy Taxi had to struggle with proper penetration into the Nigerian market.
OPay
Talking about OPay, the story is a bit different as it is not a case of exiting the country. Instead, the fintech and multi-service company has been struggling with profitability since it arrived in Lagos, Nigeria back in August 2018. Here, there are several key issues that may lead to a bad ending for the Chinese company if care is not properly taken.
One of those many key concerns about OPay’s business in Nigeria is the over-reliance on financing to become profitable. While it is not news that Africa, and Nigeria as a whole, has become a focal point for foreign investors; OPay has keyed itself into the enormous opportunity therein, investing millions of dollars to pivot its multi-service platform which has been more of a liability than an asset. Why? You may like to ask; so far, the company has rather focused on spending, even when it is obvious that a lot of their business module is not sustainable, or perhaps, requires an overhauling in other cases.
As much as funding for a startup is very vital, working with a module that is sustainable or viable is as important. Sometimes, it is not all about spending money; a sustainable strategy sometimes cost less spending. It is even worse when a startup such as OPay fails to gather (despite having reasonable funding) the required expertise and knowledge to run the business, especially in this part of Africa where you have to go the extra mile to achieve significant success.
OPay’s services include ORide, OTrike, OFood, OLoan ,and the recently launched OCar among others. Here, it is obvious that a lot of activities are taking place simultaneously, however, how many of them are properly been managed? How many of the business are properly been accounted for by their respective management team?
While you are trying to figure that out, the Chinese company’s inability to turn profit yet could also be blamed on external stakeholder impact – the Lagos State Government has influenced some policy that may have impacted a vital operation of OPay negatively.
In a recent development, the State government placed a ban on the use of Okada on major roads within the state, and as a result, OPay has had to shut down its bikes operation not only in Lagos State but also in other states where its bike operation is functional, including Kwara State (although the company hasn’t released any official statement to that regards; insiders informed of how a majority of OPay staff was laid off in Ilorin following the okada an in Lagos).
The OPay bike-hailing service was meant to be the business module to lay the golden egg, but now what happens? In my opinion, it simply shows the extent to which OPay lacks an understanding of the environment with respect to the engagement of stakeholders and policymakers.
Also, in a recent report by a research website- Hindenberg, Opera was found guilty of several misconducts in its operations across the board. The company was not only linked to what was tagged as ‘exploitative loans’, but also misappropriation in the company’s operational cost, poor management, as well as certain corruption crisis specifically tied to the company’s current CEO, Yahui Zhou.
According to an insider whose name will be withheld for privacy reasons; she shared an insight on what the internal management looks like, and just like the rumors that have been making rounds on the internet, it wasn’t a fantastic one. According to her, the company has employed a lot of resourceful talents, while offering juicy benefits; however, fast-forward to date, the company has been landing a lot of slash on employees’ benefits including salaries.
Additionally, OPay was recently accused of falsifying numbers, which according to a reliable source, was from fake orders, and was intended to ‘promote’ or possibly increase its app usage. Whether this worked well for them or not, it isn’t the best approach for a startup that ordinarily should be after leaving behind a good first-time impression. What also happens to gaining people’s trust? I didn’t mention investors because, to them, it’s all about Return on Investment (ROI).
It is also worthy of note; OPay’s latest venture into mobile business. The Chinese company named its mobile brand- OLLA, and you are most likely not aware of what that means, I guess? This is only possible because the new devices have recorded low sales (near-zero in some cases) in over 80% of the shops they are been sold at the moment. That’s also aside from the fact that the devices are of low quality, forcing a lot of phone dealers to quit doing business with them.
There are more than a dozen, perhaps hundreads of startups who are most likely threading in this similar path. It is only advisable to stick to the most important things in starting a business, and two of them are sticking to a sustainable plan and recruiting efficiency over numbers, (or both simultaneously).

The Government of Osun State has confirmed that the Coronavirus patient who escaped from the state’s isolation center has been found.
