Media mogul, Mo Abudu and Wole Soyinka finally react to the viral ‘Plane Seat’ saga

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka and media mogul, Mo Abudu have finally reacted to the unusual encounter between himself and a plane passenger that led to national debate over the last 24-hours.

The scenario – where a young Nigerian man demanded that the Professor stand up from his seat onboard a flight over the weekend – has caused a frenzy online and Mo Abudu’s initial reaction to the story also made her a target on social media.

A twist came to the story after a gentleman took to the comment section to identify himself as the one who asked the Professor to stand up from his seat. The gentleman later went on to his page to reveal that his comment was only to portray how people’s character can be easily judged after hearing from one person’s point of view.

In her reaction to the whole saga, Mo Abudu said,

Good morning beautiful people.

Its 6.30 am here in Los Angeles.

Quite a bit has been said about me making certain comments about the young man that refused to give up his seat for Professor Wole Soyinka.

I will not comment further on this, however as you all know I LOVE and RESPECT Professor Wole Soyinka dearly.
Based on this incident, I did receive an email from Professor Wole Soyinka this morning and with his permission, its below:

Hallo Mo,
Someone sent me Patrick Tonye’s comment on the plane incident, and I saw your brief comment. It was a very minor thing and I’d forgotten all about it. However, after reading the boy’s response, I became curious. First, I never exchanged a word with him throughout beyond inviting him to take his allotted seat. Never spoke a word to him after that. Certainly never exchanged contact. So of course, I wonder if it’s the very individual who’s posted this or a total fake. The phenomenon of stolen identities takes very strange dimensions and has become a source of worry. I wonder if this is one such. Any way of your finding out. I don’t operate in the social media as you probably recall.

Court sentence Yahoo boy, Temitope Charles, to 35 years in prison without an option of fine

A Kwara State High Court in Ilorin on Tuesday sentenced an internet fraudster, Temitope Charles, to 35 years in prison without an option of fine.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Mahmud Abdulgafar, while delivering Judgement on a criminal charge brought against the convict by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), pronounced the convict guilty and sentenced him to seven years in prison on each of the five-count charge.

Abdulgafar directed that the prison sentence should run concurrently. The Judge agreed that EFCC had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, noting that the evidence of the only prosecution witness, Olamide Sadiq, who is an operative of the commission, was very strong and reliable.

”The evidence of PW1, Olamide Sadiq, was left unchallenged by the defendant; all the chats and text messages were printed from his email address in his presence.

I have considered the testimonies of the PW1, this honourable court is of the opinion that the PW1 is a witness of truth, the accused person indeed was in possession of fake documents, the prosecution has sufficiently link the defendant to the email address,” Abdulgafar said.

Earlier, Defence Counsel, A.B Bakare, had urged the judge to temper justice with mercy, saying that his client was a first time offender. Prosecuting Counsel, Sessan Ola, opposed to the request and asked the court to sentence the convict according to the provisions of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act.

Ola said: “going by the provisions of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, the minimum punishment for this type of offence is seven years and maximum of 20 years, the court can not use its discretion outside the same.”

The EFCC had arraigned Charles before the court on a five- count charge bordering on internet fraud, sometime in March. Charles was allegedly caught with some documents indicating that he wanted to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

One of the five-count charge read: “the suspect, who is also known as Teresa Simon, was said to have been apprehended on February 28, 2019, in Ilorin in possession of documents containing false representation with intent to defraud, an offence said to be contrary to Sections 6 and 8 (b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act,”

‘That being said, the Nigerian professional class is callous and exemplified by this whole WS issue. The only culture they know is Agbada and how to respect elders. Just aesthetics nothing concrete. This ‘respecting elders’ is just an excuse not to stand up to elders!! To go around sucking up and kisses donkeys!( u know the right word). Ask them other than their agbada and ‘respecting elders’ what other african culture do they practice or hold higher than European and Arabic ideals. Ask them, the answer is Zero, Zilch, Nada. Two Nigerian drug peddlers arrested in India, 254 grams of cocaine seized from their possession

Two Nigerian drug peddlers and one from Ivory Coast, were arrested and 254 grams of cocaine worth 15 lakh was seized from their possession after a raid at their residence at Khadarbagh near Golconda in Hyderabad on Sunday night.

Excise sleuths arrested Zadi Pascal of Ivory Coast, Ugochukwu Chima Goodluck and Okoro Uchenna Samuel, both from Nigeria. Acting on specific information, the excise department’s enforcement wing raided a house located at Bahaduryarjung Colony in Khadarbagh, Golconda on Sunday night and arrested the trio in possession of 254 grams of cocaine.

“Apart from the contraband, we have also seized 3.2 lakh cash, which the accused have collected from clients by selling the drug. Our team has also seized three motorcycles and four cell phones from the accused,” deputy commissioner, excise, C Vivekananda Reddy, said.

On interrogation, Pascal confessed that he had been working for two groups of cocaine peddlers operating from Mumbai and Bengaluru.

“Goodluck works for Bengaluru-based cocaine supplier Ebuka, while Samuel has been working for Mumbai-based supplier Dandy, who in turn operates on the instructions of Nigeria-based peddler Lucky,” excise department assistant superintendent N Anji Reddy said.

Goodluck came from Bengaluru a few days ago and handed over cocaine to Pascal. After the sale, he was supposed to collect cash from Pascal and hand over it over to Ebuka. Samuel came from Mumbai to keep a watch on Pascal’s operations in the city on behalf of Dandy and Lucky. None of the arrested peddlers have a valid visa and they have been staying illegally in the country for the past two-and-half-years, the excise officials said.

The deputy commissioner said they have identified some customers and appropriate legal action would be initiated against them. The accused were produced in court, which remanded them in judicial custody.

Yahoo Boys: Oyo Has Highest Number Of Internet, Cyber Crimes In South-West – EFCC

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Monday, revealed that Oyo State has the highest number of cybercrimes and corruption related cases out of the six states in the South West.

This was disclosed by the zonal Head of the commission, Mr. Friday Ebelo when speaking with newsmen in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The statistics, he noted, was based on the last six months since the baton of leadership changed in the zone.

Most of the suspects, who perpetrate cybercrimes and other fraudulent acts, he noted, are between the ages of 18 and 40.

Ebelo said: “If you are looking for the number of convictions, Oyo State should be seen as the highest. We are based in Ibadan and since I resumed here, the tempo of our activities has increased.

“These suspects of cybercrimes and fraud related cases operate from Lagos and share their loots in Ibadan. But now, most of them are leaving Ibadan for the adjoining states.”

While giving further breakdown of the statistics, the EFCC official said: “This year, the zone received a total of 481 petitions. We were able to secure 83 convictions out of the 107 cases filed at different courts within the zone. That represents 83 per cent of the total number of cases filed.”

“From January to June 21, 2019, an aggregate sum of N116.9 million has been recovered. Others, which are in foreign currencies, include $39,129, £1,800 and £50,” he said.

He added that 65 vehicles were recovered from the suspects.

Ebelo explained that in some cases, criminals, who act as agents of the commission, use its name to seal up properties saying this is a scam as the commission does not work with any agents.

He appealed to parents to be more vigilant and pay constant visits to their wards in schools.

I would have told Wole Soyinka to stand up — Daddy Freeze reacts

Controversial OAP, Daddy Freeze has reacted to Tonye Cole’s post about a young man who asked professor Wole Soyinka to get up from his window seat in a plane despite other passengers begging him to let the renowned literary icon have the seat.

Read His Reaction Below;

Dear Tonye Cole,

I probably would have politely done the same thing the young man did.

Growing up, I was taught never to challenge my elders.

In retrospect, I find it difficult to point to what this has earned us as a people? Are we more morally upright, less corrupt, safer, richer and better than nations where children are encouraged to stand up to elders? NO!

Nigeria, with all our respect, has become the poverty capital of the world boasting of more people in extreme poverty than China and India combined, YES, COMBINED! (According to worldpoverty.io)

Some of our elders have sold our birthright, lied to us about salvation and taken foolish decisions that have impoverished us.

What drew me to Prof. Soyinka in the first place was the fact that he never failed to challenge our leaders in power and religion, no matter their age.

The young man on the flight DEMANDED his right; if you can’t demand your right on a flight, how can you demand it from the government or church?

The government needs to provide amenities for the people, while the Church should be accountable to the last kobo, we MUST demand this!

Christ was less than 33 years old when he challenged the Pharisees, the authorities in religion of that time, who were in their 70s and 80s. ~FRZ

Read Tonye Cole’s post below;

“I met one of the greatest Nigerians walking the earth today and as with other times, he was genteel, witty, forthright and humble. My smile gives me away as he permitted the picture whereas he would have preferred to get back to his newspapers.

Then we boarded the flight and after assisting him with his bags, he took the window seat and promptly started reading again.

A few minutes later this young man, baseball cap, t-shirt to show his muscled chest and tattooed biceps boards the plane and tells Prof he is on his seat (which he was). Those of us including the cabin crew tried to reason with Bobo Fine to let the old man be but the chap refused. He insisted Prof should vacate his window seat, which the old man quietly did for his original aisle seat next to him.

I couldn’t understand how we got to this point where we no longer have respect for elders, even if are so ignorant of the great global personalities in our midst. Is it too much to ask that an elderly man be allowed to remain in a seat allotted to you in the same business class cabin and the same row? Na wa o!

Young man tells Wole Soyinka to leave his seat — Tonye Cole, Mo Abudu, Kate Henshaw React

Oil Mogul Tonye Patrick Cole has narrated a story how a young man ordered Professor Wole Soyinka, Nigeria’s only Nobel laureate, literary giant, globally and nationally respected figure out of his seat, on a flight.

Tonye Cole did not indicate whether it was a local or international flight, but the story posted on Sunday has elicited outrage and condemnation of the young man, for committing sacrilege. Some others have sided the young man for insisting on his right.

Here is Tonye Cole’s story posted on Instagram

Comedian and MC, Gbenga Adeyinka, One of those who reacted to the post said:

“It’s a sad reflection of who we have become. Let’s even forget who Prof Wole Soyinka is (although thats hard to do).

“Consider his age. If that is where he feels comfortable, it behoves the young man to allow him sit there considering his age. It’s like me telling my father to stand up from where I sit normally when he comes to visit.

“We were brought up to stand up for the elderly, women (pregnant or otherwise) but I guess that is no longer the NORM. ITS A PRIVILEGE… (A VERY RARE ONE AT THAT ) TO BE SEATED CLOSE TO PROF. My opinion is the YOUNG CHAP SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF. IT’S LIKE MEETING WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE AND TELLING HIM TO VACATE A SEAT COS YOU WERE ALLOCATED THE SEAT”
