Justice Simon Amobeda of the Federal High Court sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, on Wednesday, June 26, 2019, jailed a notorious yahoo yahoo kingpin, Akpojivi Onoriode, who was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a one-count charge bordering on cybercrime.
The convict, a 29-year-old graduate of Delta State University, Abraka and a father of two, was arrested by operatives of the Uyo Zonal Office of the Commission in the early hours of Saturday, May 4, 2019, following intelligence report exposing him of living above his means. He was picked up at his lavishly furnished duplex on Plot 10, Block VI, Unical Satellite Town, Calabar, Cross River State.
Upon his arrest, the convict, popularly known as “Blinks” or “Mr. White”, confessed to having offshore accounts in China and narrated how he started the business of defrauding people quite early, while he was still an undergraduate at Delta State University, Abraka in Delta State.
The charge against Akpojivi reads: “That you, Onoriode Joel Akpojivi, on or about the 4th day of May 2019, in Nigeria within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did unlawfully produce, supply, procure for use and distributed a computer program (fake online banking link platform) designed for the purpose of electronically defrauding unsuspecting persons and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 28 (1) (a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention Etc) Act 2015 and punishable under Section (1) (c) of the same Act.”
Shocked by the weight of evidence gathered against him by the EFCC, Akpojivi chose not to waste the time of the court as he pleaded “guilty” to the charge.
In view of his plea, counsel for the EFCC, A.S. Abuh, informed the court of a plea bargain arrangement entered between the convict and the Commission, dated June 19, 2019 and filed on June 20, 2019.
Alabama is prosecuting a pregnant woman for manslaughter for losing her baby after being shot in the stomach. However, they aren’t prosecuting her shooter.
Marshae Jones, a 27-year-old Birmingham woman, was shot in the stomach at about noon on Dec. 4, 2018, outside Dollar General on Park Road. She was 5 months pregnant at the time and her unborn child died as a result of the shooting.
Marshae was indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury on a manslaughter charge. She was taken into custody on Wednesday. Meanwhile, charges against her shooter, Ebony Jemison, 23, have been dismissed by a grand jury.
Though Jones didn’t fire the shots that killed her unborn baby girl, according to reports, authorities said the mother initiated the dispute that led to the gunfire. Police initially charged 23-year-old Ebony Jemison with manslaughter, but the charge against Jemison was dismissed after the grand jury failed to indict her.
Pleasant Grove police Lt. Danny Reid said at the time of the shooting: “The investigation showed that the only true victim in this was the unborn baby. It was the mother of the child who initiated and continued the fight which resulted in the death of her own unborn baby.”
Reid said the fight stemmed over the unborn baby’s father. The investigation showed, he said, that it was Jones who initiated and pressed the fight, which ultimately caused Jemison to defend herself and unfortunately caused the death of the baby.
Reid said: “Let’s not lose sight that the unborn baby is the victim here. She had no choice in being brought unnecessarily into a fight where she was relying on her mother for protection.”
The story has sparked outrage as people are saying the victim is being blamed while the criminal is allowed to go free. It has also sparked a discussion about fetal personhood and abortion laws.

A quick-thinking Florida dad is being praised online after he made a ‘Superman jump’ into a swimming pool to save his son from drowning.
Albert Passavanti and his family were lounging by the pool in Palm Beach County, Florida on Sunday when his one-year-old son Rocco was seen walking along the pool’s edge through an open gate around it to get an inflatable ball when he tumbled into the pool.
Immediately, Passavanti ran and made a ‘Superman jump’ by diving over a 4-foot-fence to save his son from drowning.
The incident was captured in a CCTV footage which was later released online.
“The second you see it; you get Superman strength and just have to go for it, whatever you got to do,” he told CNN affiliate WPTV. “It didn’t even cross my mind to go around. It was point A to point B.”

Nigerian songstress, Simi has made her fans known the reason why she walked down the aisle with Adekunle Gold.

Former Chelsea coach, Maurizio Sarri, has revealed he smokes 60 sticks of cigarette a day.
The 60-year-old averages around four packets of cigarettes a day and he has admitted it’s getting out of control.
“I smoke 60 a day, which is probably a few too many,” he revealed to La Nuova Riviera via Football Italia. That works out at a whopping £1,400 every month.
“I don’t particularly feel the need to smoke during games, but straight afterwards it really is necessary,” he added.
A mother, 52, and her daughter, 20, reported a hired assassin to police after they paid him to carry out a murder but he didn’t follow through.
The mother and her daughter paid the daughter’s boyfriend a deposit of €7,000 to kill the mother’s partner and sell his organs after the boyfriend allegedly told them that he was a government spy and needed the cash to find and kill him.
Police sources said the mother and daughter hoped the sale of their victim’s organs would help them to recover €60,000 (£53,765) allegedly stolen from the mother.
But he ended up not carrying out the murder so the mother and daughter went to police in Spain to make a formal complaint about losing the money.
The daughter’s boyfriend, who claimed to have won a string of medals as a secret agent for Spanish official intelligence agency CNI, was arrested hours later.
Detectives have also seized a contract signed by the trio which stated the killing would be carried out by a group specialising in anti-terrorist operations between 60 and 180 days after the written agreement was made.
All three are Spanish and police sources said none has a criminal record. They are currently on bail after being released by a judge after questioning pending an ongoing court probe.
No details have been released about the identity and whereabouts of the mum’s partner and how he had managed to dupe her out of more than £50,000.

Two explosions have just been witnessed in Tunisia with several people injured after a suspected suicide bomber blew himself close to the French embassy in the capital city, Tunis.
The first attack was targeted at a police car in Charles de Gaulle street in downtown Tunis, witnesses told Reuters. Two police officers and three civilians have been wounded according to the Interior Ministry.
A second was reportedly witnessed at the headquarters of government anti-terrorist headquarters. Security forces are currently at the scene and they have suspended traffic in Habib Bourguiba Street.
The last suicide bombing to hit Tunis was in 2015 when a bus carrying members of the presidential guard was targeted. Twelve people were killed and 16 injured, with ISIS later claiming responsibility for the attack.

A High Court in Abuja has ruled that graduates who did not participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme are qualified to run for governorship election.
Justice M.A Mohammed gave the ruling in a pre-election suit filed by Senator Iyabo Anisulowo, challenging the eligibility of Ogun state governor, Dapo Abiodun, contesting the state governorship election.
Abiodun in his CFOO1 form submitted to INEC last year, indicated he did not have NYSC discharge certificate. Abiodun did not participate in the compulsory NYSC program, even though he finished his first degree in 1986.
Anisulowo had asked the court to disqualify Abiodun as the APC governorship candidate since he failed to participate in the mandatory NYSC scheme.
At the hearing of the case yesterday June 26th, Wale Ajayi, the governor’s counsel, requested that the court set aside the case, since it was never stated that the participation in the NYSC scheme was a criterion to hold public office.
Delivering judgement, Justice Mohammed held that the NYSC Act does not make provision for the disqualification of a candidate who failed to participate in its scheme. He said that a candidate can only be disqualified under Section 177 of the constitution which states that
“a person shall be qualified for election to the office of Governor of a State if:
(a) he is a citizen of Nigeria by birth;
(b) he has attained the age of thirty-five years;
(c) he is a member of a political party and is sponsored by that political party; and
(d) he has been educated up to at least School Certificate level or its equivalent.”
He dismissed the case afterwards.

Organizers of the Big Brother Naija Reality show, Multichoice have released some stringent rules for the 2019 BBNaija which includes threats to report social media accounts that live streams the reality show.
The threat made by Multichoice to report social media accounts that live streams 2019 BBNaija and also ensuring that the account is deleted, applies to bloggers, individuals and digital media platforms.
The rules also include prohibition of watermarked videos, crediting their platform as a source. It was further learnt that the new rule is aimed at getting people to watch the reality show on DSTV or GoTV.

Few days ago, Nigerian social media was set abuzz when business executive, Patrick Tonye Cole took to his Instagram page to share the encounter between Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka and a gentleman on an airplane.
Tonye Cole had shared the narrative in a manner that most social media users found demeaning and judgmental of the gentleman’s attitude towards the prof. Media mogul, Mo Abudu and actress, Kate Henshaw were part of the first celebrities to react to the narrative before it became a widely discussed topic online.
As people have continued to express their views over the saga, the Prof’s son, Olaokun Soyinka has now waded in on the matter – in an open letter to business executive who stirred up the controversy, Mr, Olaokun thanked Tonye Cole for ‘standing up for his father, and for respect.” He went on to express his “irritation” at “social media warriors”.
He went on to say that the passenger who owned the window seat had a right to demand his seat but the elder is “entitled to some deference or respect.”
He went on to criticize the youths of today for their lack of respect for elders, adding that “those who like to see an elder given his due deference are entirely within their rights to judge the young man (window seat owner).”
