Lagos parades two LASTMA officers over alleged extortion (photos)

Lagos State Government has paraded two officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), who allegedly received gratification from a traffic offender.

The officers whose names were not revealed were summoned to the Governor’s office today Friday June 21st, following a petition from a lawyer to the offender.

The two LASTMA officials allegedly received undisclosed amount of cash into their personal bank accounts as bribe to free the offender, who claimed to be driving on a one-way lane unknowingly.

During a fact-finding engagement with the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the two officers admitted that they collected gratification from the offender, but claimed the offender paid the money to show appreciation.

Dr. Hamzat condemned the act, noting that LASTMA officers did not have a brief to receive gratification from members of the public for carrying out their statutory duty.

The Deputy Governor disclosed that disciplinary actions would be taken against the erring officers immediately, adding that the punitive measures would serve as deterrent to other officers with similar motive to extort money from motorists.

“These two officials allegedly extorted money from an offender whose lawyer sent a petition to us. We have listened to their stories, but we are not convinced by their defence. For further action, the two officers have been referred to LASTMA for further investigation and possible disciplinary actions. The law must take its course. This effort is to inform members of the public that LASTMA is created to make life easy for all of us. In carrying out their statutory duties, no agency of government is allowed to harass citizens. We advise residents not to pay penalty into personal bank accounts of government officials. LASTMA and other agencies have their direct lines to lodge complaints. This administration will ensure people live peacefully in Lagos. We are not out to harass anybody. These two LASTMA officers will receive disciplinary actions if found guilty. They will be given fair hearing to prove their case, but if found guilty, the law would take its course.” Hamzat said

The General Manager, LASTMA, Mr. Wale Musa, who was at the meeting, also warned officers against extortion, saying the agency had stepped up its monitoring activities to eliminate extortion.

“No LASTMA officer has right to issue penalty ticket. We are ready to discipline erring officers. If they misbehave, the law will deal with them. The public should report any officer through designated numbers published on our website. We don’t condone indiscipline. The way we penalise violators of traffic laws is the way we will deal with our officers too.”

Meanwhile, the government has urged members of the public to report badly behaved officials of the agency to the appropriate authority.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who gave the directive on Friday, noted that government was currently investigating various complaints levelled against officers of the traffic agency. Full weight of the law, the Governor said, will be on any government official extorting members of the public.

I slapped my ex-boyfriend for looking at another Lady – Super Falcons’ Ordega

Super Falcons player, Francisca Ordega has revealed that she once slapped her ex-boyfriend for looking at another lady.

According to her, she slapped her ex-boyfriend for looking at another woman because the jealousy was obvious and she wondered if the lady was prettier than her.

Speaking to PUNCH’s Kelvin Ekerete, she was asked about the craziest thing she did on and off the pitch.

She said:

On the pitch in the US, that was two years ago, I had this hair bun I always put on. We were training and all of a sudden, my wig and the hair bun fell off but I didn’t realise it was off, I was still running with the ball and all the players stopped and were all laughing. At the back of my mind, I was like, ‘what is happening?’ I was with the ball and was about scoring, and everyone was just laughing. So, I turned and tried to look around. Then, one of them just pointed, saying ‘Franny.’ Then I looked at it.

It was embarrassing and at the same time funny; even the coach, everyone were just laughing. Each time I remember the scenario, it always cracks me up. And off the field, my first boyfriend ever, we were together and were going out. I was younger then, I was really young. We were going out and there was this very pretty girl that was so cute, cuter than me, and my boyfriend was just staring at her and I was like, ‘Hey! What are you looking at?’ And a lot of people were there, lots of them and I didn’t even know when I slapped him like, ‘Hey! What are you looking at? Is she prettier than me?’ I did it with all seriousness and everything. The jealousy was just obvious.

I was so jealous at that moment and everyone was just laughing at me. In our language (Tiv) they said, ‘Take care of your property, I like your spirit, carry on.’ I was so embarrassed but now it’s always fun to me anytime I remember it or when I see him. If we get to see each other, he usually asks me, ‘I hope you’ve stopped this drama thing?’ And I’ll be like, ‘Hey! I’ve stopped.’ So, it’s kind of crazy.

What do you do before and after a game?

I just like to wear my headset, listen to my favourite music from Wizkid. Also, I try to eat a lot of food to recover the energy lost.

Barcelona offer 100m Euros & Coutinho for Neymar

Barcelona have tabled an offer of €100 million plus Philippe Coutinho in their bid to bring Neymar back to the club, reports Sport.

The Camp Nou giants are eager to re-sign the Brazil international from Paris Saint-Germain and are hoping that a deal involving a sizeable fee and a proven playmaker will be deemed acceptable.

In other news, Transfer fee alone could break his own world record

Neymar’s elevated wage demands are the main obstacle between the Brazilian and a move back to Barcelona, according to Le 10 Sport.

Speculation concerning Neymar’s future has heightened in recent days, amid reports that he is determined not to resume his Paris Saint-Germain career.

But aside from his transfer fee, that would be in the region of €200-300 million (£178-266m/$225-338m), although Ousmane Dembele could go the other way to offset the cost, his astronomic annual salary is beyond the Catalans’ means.

Man Utd have rejected a loan offer for Alexis Sanchez from Palmeiras, according to Sport Witness.

The 30-year-old scored his first goal in five months in Chile’s Copa America victory over Japan, and has been strongly linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer.

Brazilian club Palmeiras had stated their interest in the player, but Man Utd immediately ruled out any possibility of the move.
Arsenal have been dealt a double blow in their attempt to bring in some fresh faces, as moves for both Yannick Carrasco and Ryan Fraser have stalled.

According to the Evening Standard, there have been no positive steps in bringing in either winger to the club this summer.

Ghana speaks on reported xenophobia plot against Nigerians

Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Rashid Bawa on Thursday urged Nigerians doing business in his home country to carry on their trade without fear of molestation from any quarter.

Bawa gave the advice at the High Commission in Abuja during a meeting with a delegation from the Nigerian Diaspora Commission led by the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, the envoy’s advice is coming against the backdrop of an attack on Nigerian spare part dealers by their Ghanaian counterparts in the Suame Magazine Industrial Enclave in Kumasi.

This follows the closure of shops operated by Nigerians after indigenous Ghanaian spare parts dealers in the area protested against the continuous operation of foreigners in the retail trade.

About 50 shops belonging to Nigerian spare parts dealers were locked up by agitated Ghanaians, who said they would not sit down and watch while foreigners flout the laws governing retail marketing in their country.

The envoy said that President Nana Akufo-Addo had directed security agencies to be on top of the situation and had urged Nigerians to resume their trade without any fear.

The high commissioner, who described the attack on the Nigerian spare parts dealers as very unfortunate, said that the attacks occurred because some young Ghanaians took laws into their hands.

He, however, said some people suspected to have been involved in the incident had been arrested. He further said that the matter had been brought under control and that security agencies working hard to ensure that the issue did not get worse.

The high commissioner explained that Ghana had been having security challenges in the past six months, citing alleged kidnapping.

“When a crime is committed between individuals, it is not between nations. “So this should not be allowed to create anxiety between Nigeria and Ghana,” he said.

He appealed to the media not to destroy the relationship between both through provocative reportage of happenings.

Speaking earlier, Dabiri-Erewa had told the high commissioner that Ghanaians were living and working in Nigeria as well.

She, therefore, expressed the hope that the high commissioner would assure Nigerians in that country of the safety of their lives and property.

“We need assurance on the protection of Nigerians. We have Ghanaians living in Nigeria and we treat them as brothers and sisters,’’ she said.

She told the envoy that the Nigerian government would be like to be informed of any Nigerian who committed crime in Ghana.

“We should know, who they are; we should know, who those people are that are giving the country a bad name.

“Nigerians should not just be criminalised,’’ she said.

She also urged the media not to sensationalize the situation.

Dabiri-Erewa also led a delegation from the commission to another meeting with Lene Dimban, the Togolese Ambassador to Nigeria.

In the course of the meeting, she asked for assurances of the safety of Nigerians living in Togo.

Responding, the ambassador assured the delegation that Togolese authorities would ensure that the incident that happened in Ghana did not occur in Togo.

The spokesperson of the state police command, Nnamdi Omoni, who made this known to newsmen in Port Harcourt, the state capital, said the academician recognized one of the robbers during a robbery attack in his home.

Secret camera captures carer abusing 101-year-old vulnerable woman in her home

A carer has been jailed for abusing an elderly and frail woman with dementia in her home in Birmingham.

Secret camera captures carer

The abuse was captured on a secret camera installed by the woman’s family – her family became concerned after they saw bruising on her body and her grandson heard her screaming in her bedroom. He set up a secret camera to get to the bottom of what was happening.

The footage, shot in early August last year, showed several forms of abuse meted out on the woman by the carer named Ashikiah Reid, 36. It shows Reid slapping the victim’s hand away and leaning on her ribs, causing her to cry out.

As soon as her bosses were shown the footage, Reid was dismissed. She has now been given an eight-month prison sentence for her abuse.

Prosecutor Alison Scott Jones said,

“The family certainly did not anticipate what we are about to see. The handling lacks compassion. There is no communication with the patient about what is going on. It is very sterile and rough.

Secret camera captures carer

Miss Scott Jones said the victim was now scared of any new carers.

She added,

“This is a vulnerable old lady who appears to be terrified of the very people paid to look after her.”

She said it was also upsetting for the family to discover this had been going on while they were in the house. In a statement the victim’s daughter in law said what happened had taken the safety and happiness away from her.

Judge Mark Wall QC said,

“The video I have watched reveals that you were handling her without assistance which was contrary to the care plan.

“While you were doing that you were very rough with her on occasions. You have slapped her hands and have lent on her in a way that has caused her obvious distress. She was at times shouting out in protest. You have left her without a sense of security she ought to feel in her own home.

“This was an old lady of extreme vulnerability in addition to her age.”

Girls swapped at birth, discover they are identical twins after a Facebook clash

A hospital in Kenya has finally confirmed that two Kakamega girls, Sharon Mathias and Melon Lutenyo, are identical twins. While browsing, Sharon had come across Melon and sent her a ‘friend request’.

No sooner had she ‘accepted’, the request, the two started engaging in a war of words over the authenticity of the other’s online profile. They were both suspicious of their striking resemblance but after the online altercation they chose to cut off their communication. The two finally met in December 2018 at a bus stop in Kakamega town.

This was prompted by constant mention by their teachers and schoolmates about their resemblance. Soon, their communication became frequent to the extent that they introduced each other to their parents.

In April 2019, both families resorted to solve the mystery by seeking professional help. Lancet Kenya then offered to carry out a DNA test at subsidised cost. The result eventually confirmed that they are twins.

Their mother, Ms Onyango, is said to have gone to Kakamega Hospital while pregnant on August 15, 1999. She expected to deliver triplets but when she regained consciousness after delivery through a caesarean section, she was informed that she had given birth to twins.

The twins were placed in an incubator for a week due to low birth weight. She said that she had been in doubt since her twin daughters Melon and Melvin did not turn out identical.

Also Ms Omina, who has just been confirmed not to be Sharon’s biological mother, said that she gave birth on August 14, 1999, just a day before Ms Onyango had her delivery.

However, the Director of Criminal Investigations office will still pursue the case of the identical twins switched at birth, even after the family said they will not press charges against the hospital.

In the mix up, Mevies Imbaya was given to Onyango as a fraternal twin to Melon, but it has now been confirmed that she is the biological daughter of Omina, who brought up Sharon.

3 teachers caught with leaked WAEC questions

THREE secondary school teachers arrested recently for allegedly aiding and abating malpractices in West African Examinations Council,WAEC,in three states in the South, were on Thursday paraded by the police in Abuja.

The teachers, who were paraded before newsmen at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, however, feigned ignorant of their offence,as according them, they merely snapped questions of examinations already written by students with their phones, saying they didn’t know such act constituted an offence.

According to them, their actions were merely to later go through the questions and provide their answers for the WAEC candidates in the schools they are teaching so they can know questions not correctly answered in the examination.

The teachers who identified themselves as Godstime Onuoha, Uche Chukwuma and Ibuokanma Darlington, all staff of some secondary schools in I’m, Anambra and Rivers State, respectively, according to the Force Headqarters’ image maker, Frank Mba, were allegedly caught while in possession of WAEC questions papers.

Mbah, explained that the questions were careful concealed on their mobile phones where they leaked to students through WhatsApp group platforms they established for the students, prior to any subjects they were to write. The teachers, he explained, took advantage of the role designated to them as supervisors in some examination centres to indulge in the acts.

He disclosed that their arrests were effected by the police detectives from the Cybercrime unit with active collaboration by officials of the examination’s body. According to him,the examination malpractice suspects will be charged to court for diligent prosecution whenever investigations on their matters were completed.
