Karthyayani Amma, a 96-year-old woman set a record by scoring 98 marks out of 100 in the literacy exam in southern Indian state of Kerala.
The Kerala State literacy mission conducts equivalency examination in different grades for people who could not get proper schooling.
After the results were declared on Wednesday, Karthyayani Amma was felicitated by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Amma, who hails from Cheeped in Alapuzha district north of Kerala state’s capital Thiruvananthapuram, has never attended any school.
She is said to have been inspired by her daughter, who recently finished the literacy mission’s course. “I saw children studying and got inspired. I didn’t study when I should have but I am glad that I am getting the opportunity to do that now,” Amma said.
The literacy test is equivalent of exam for Class 4 and Amma said she looks forward to passing Class 10. “After this, I want to learn computer too. In my free time I can use the computer, type on the computer,” the nonagenarian told reporters.
Amma was married at the age of 13. According to local government officials, of the 43,330 students who sat for the exam, Amma was the oldest ever, in the state, to take a literacy test. The literacy program tests reading, writing and basic mathematical skills. Officials said this year 42,933 candidates passed the exam, taking the state closer to its aim of 100 percent literacy.

Elizabeth Ogbanje, a 13-year-old pupil was allegedly raped by a lecturer at the Department of Catering and Hotel Management, Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, and his son.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Niger/Kwara/Kogi Area Command on Wednesday said it has seized no fewer than nine hundred and thirty four (934) 50kg bags of imported foreign rice suspected to have been smuggled through the land border in the three states within October.
Customs Area Controller in charge of the three states, Yusuf Abba Kassim made this disclosure while briefing journalists at a press conference held at the headquarters of the command in Minna, Niger State capital.
Kassim, while speaking, added that the command also intercepted twelve (12) bales of second hand clothing, one used Volkswagen Golf, one use Toyota Camry, one used Toyota Avencis (black colour) 1998 model, one used Toyota Rav4 (red colour) 2017 Model and one trailer (Howo) Eighteen (18) Tire Truck loaded with bags of imported foreign rice and sugar.
Kassim said, “These strategic seizures were made in the month of October alone: nine hundred and thirty four (934) 50kg gags of imported foreign Rice suspected to have come in through the land border with a duty paid value of one hundred and sixty million, sixty six thousand seven hundred naira (N160, 066,700).
“Twelve (12) Bales of second Hand clothing with duty paid value of Four Hundred and Thirty Two Thousand Naira (N432, 000).
“One used Volkswagen Golf with duty paid value of One Hundred and Eighty Thousand Naira (N180, 000).
“One use Toyota Camry with duty Paid value of Three Million five Hundred and Seventy Seven Thousand Five Hundred Naira (N3, 577,500).
“One used Toyota Avencis (black colour) 1998 model. One Used Toyota Rav4 (red colour) 2017 Model. One trailer (Howo) Eighteen (18) Tire Truck Loaded with Bags of imported foreign Rice and Sugar.
“I resumed here in the Command on Monday 13th August, 2018 determined to build on the success records of my predecessors both in revenue generation and anti-smuggling activities. As we all know, the Nigeria Customs Service is very strategic in the sustenance of the Nation’s economy.
“I recognize the critical role the media can play especially in the area of sensitization and enlightenment to all our stakeholders and the society at large. This is why I have called this briefing to partner with the media in order to achieve willful compliance from the public as well as to showcase what the Command is doing.
“I took it as my first point of duty to visit all the head of sisters agencies, traditional rulers and Customs formation within the Command to recognize them, strengthen the co-existing cordial relationship between the Command and the critical stakeholders as well as to solicit for greater cooperation in terms of information gathering and dissemination. The results of the action coupled with the Command’s renewed vigour in utilization of cutting edge strategies in our anti-smuggling war.”
Kassim while speaking further remarked that the command generated the sum of seven hundred and ninety one million two hundred and forty thousand four hundred eleven naira seventy seven kobo (N 791, 240, 411. 77) between August and November.
He said, “On the other hand, the Niger/Kwara/Kogi Command has generated a total of Seven Hundred and Ninety One Million Two Hundred and Forty Thousand Four Hundred Eleven Naira Seventy Seven Kobo (N 791, 240, 411. 77) from August, 2018 when I assumed office to date. This period last year 2017, the Command generated N316, 517, 521. 96 (August to October, 2017), which shows an increase of N474, 722, 899. 81.
“Relatively, a total of twenty three (23) seizures with the duty paid value of thirty seven million, nine hundred and eleven thousand; seven hundred and seven naira only (N37, 911,707.00) has been made under my leadership. While same period last year (August to October, 2017) the Command had a total of twenty five (25) seizures with a duty paid value of fifty one million, one hundred and seventeen thousand, six hundred and four naira (N51, 117,604.00).
“I want to use this medium to reiterate that the current administration of Customs under the able leadership of Col. Hammed Ibrahim Ali (rtd) has zero tolerance for corruption and revenue leakages in all its ramifications and the Niger/Kwara/Kogi Area Command is committed to enforcing same. We will continue to police our area of operation in line with the Comptroller General’s zero tolerance for smuggling as well”.

A fuel thief met his water-loo after his hand got stuck in a vehicle tank while trying to steal fuel in the capital city of Anambra state
According to reports, the young man who is notorious for stealing fuel/diesel from peoples’ vehicles, was “mysteriously” trapped in the course of the latest operation.It was alleged by the residents of the area that the thief was trapped by a ‘juju’ placed by the owner of a vehicle he was stealing from.
While others have attributed the incident to the alleged charm/’juju’, others have argued that the thief got trapped after inserting his hand deep into the fuel tank.The incident attracted large number of residents who gathered at the scene to see the trapped thief.

A Nigerian man must be really proud of himself after he discovered the amount of money that he’s been saving in his piggy bank for 10months.
Seun, who had been saving for 10 months, counted N306,415 in his wooden bank. He has said he will spend some of it on his girlfriend because she deserves some spending.
A 30-year-old cross-border robbery suspect, John Godwin, has revealed that he was arrested because he forgot to recite Psalm 121 before going for his last operation.
He added that it was because God wanted the police to arrest him that he forgot to the read Psalm 121 on that fateful day.
Four other suspects – Solomon Adeniji (27), Tosin Adeoye (25) and two nationals of Republic of Benin, Adewale Adebolaji (45) and Moyori Sule (42) – were arrested alongside with Godwin.
The Zonal Police Public Relations Officer (ZPPRO), CSP Dolapo Badmos, said the suspects used to snatch vehicles in Nigeria drive them to Benin Republic and hand then over to a receiver identified only as Alhaji.
It was learnt that Godwin was a former convict. In an interview with newsmen, he said: “I was once sent to Ibara Prison in Abeokuta for stealing something at a market in Abeokuta. It was in the prison that I came across Tosin.
My parents told me when I was born a pastor and prophesied that I would become a pastor. When I was in the prison I used to preach and pray with my colleagues. It is the devil that drove me to crime.
Whenever we are going on operation, I usually read Psalm 121. I believe reading the Psalms would give me protection throughout the operation period.
On the fateful day I was arrested, I forgot to read the Psalms before leaving home. I believe God wanted the police to arrest me so as to quit robbery.”

Imo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps have arrested a man identified as Chiwendu Iwuamadi for allegedly selling poisonous meat infected with tuberculosis to consumers in the state.
Punch Metro reports that Iwuamadi, 33, who hails from the Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of the state, was arrested after allegedly selling the poisonous meat to a customer, who was an undercover operative of the corps.
Parading the suspect on Wednesday, at the command headquarters in Owerri, the state Commandant of the corps, Mr Raji Ibrahim, said Iwuamadi was arrested on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 on Egbu Road, Owerri.
Ibrahim, who stated that the lumps of meat sold by the said suspect were tested and certified poisonous by relevant personnel, added that Iwuamadi was known for the crime, and had been placed under surveillance by the corps undercover operatives.
He said:
“Veterinary doctors, who conducted tests on the pieces of meat sold by Iwuamadi, confirmed that the meat was infected with tuberculosis and not recommended for consumption”.
“However, we gathered that after burying these condemned lumps of meat, the suspect would exhume them from where they were buried, wash and sell them for consumption.”
Iwuamadi, however, said he was a worker in an abattoir, adding that the pieces of meat he sold were the pieces gathered from cow legs, which were called tie-tie.
He said:
“I gathered the pieces of meat on Friday and sold to one customer the same day for N600. To my surprise, when I came to the abattoir the next day (Saturday), I was called that some officers and veterinary doctors were looking for me.
“I did not run because I did not nurse any fear that I had committed any offence.
“But they arrested me and said my stock-in-trade was selling of poisonous meat to people.”

Adetutu Alabi has called on the public to desist from bullying people with tribal marks.
Tribal marks are scarification, which are specific identification and beautification marks, designed on the face or body people’s bodies.
Popular in African countries, tribal marks are usually inscribed on the body by burning or cutting of the skin during childhood.
Adetutu, who has visible facial tribal marks, recently went viral when she went public with her request to model for U.S. Grammy award winner and pop star, Rihanna.
Rihanna eventually followed Adetutu on Instagram which inspired a social media challenge highlighting the pains and stigmatisation suffered by people with tribal marks.
Revealing the motivation behind her viral call, Adetutu said on her Instagram page that she has been a victim of intense bullying all her life because of her obvious tribal marks.
She also added that people, Nigerians especially, need to learn that beauty is skin-deep and tribal marks should be seen as beauty scars.
She said,
“It’s not easy growing up with Tribal marks. The bullying was much though it hasn’t stopped yet. I still get insulted whenever I go out.
“I want to thrive in what was meant to make me feel bad. I want to model for Rihanna. It will be a dream comes true.
“I grow a thicker skin every day. Bullies make me want to do more than they expect I could be. Bully or body shame me at your peril,” Adetutu said.
The model and single mother has sparked a trending conversation around the body shaming suffered by people with tribal marks on all social platforms.
Adetutu’s anti-bullying campaign has also been featured in several media platforms, including British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
The Lagos state police command have launched a search for an 18-year-old housemaid identified as Queen, for allegedly fleeing with her boss, Omowunmi Odejide’s property worth N500, 000.
Narrating what happened, Odejide said she went for a party on October 19th and on her return, found out that Queen who encouraged her to go to the party after she initially said she wasn’t going, had disappeared with the goods she recently parked from her store.
The lady said suspects that the maid had an accomplice as she couldn’t have carried all of the items by herself.
“On Friday, October 19, I went out for a birthday party of one of my friends who turned 40. I did not want to go because I was not in a good mood, but Queen encouraged me to; I did not know that she had something up her sleeve. I left home around 12.48pm for Agege where the party held. I came back home around 8pm and met my neighbours and my children in the compound. I asked of my housemaid and one of my neighbours said she went to buy something. Before the incident, I had a boutique that I run but due to some issues, I could not continue with it again; so I packed my goods home. When I entered the house on the day of the incident, I noticed that one box containing my goods and my children’s clothes were missing.
“This lady is someone I took in like my daughter because she told me that she lost her mother at a tender age; she looked innocent. I don’t lock the rooms when I go out. She went away with the stew I prepared, Rolex wristwatches, expensive sunshade that I sell and the one I used, female and male jeans, long towels, three male wristwatch and 10 female wristwatch, pendants- all worth N500,000.”
Reacting to the incident, the spokesperson of the state police command, CSP Chike Oti,said the police is on the trail of the suspect who would soon be apprehended. He advised residents of the state to carry detailed background checks on any maid they wish to employ in their homes.

In the other part of Kaduna town,precisely Television Area Reverend Father Augustine Ghado of St. Matthews Catholic Church was re-enacting a similar act of bravery,by saving the lives of Muslims who had been trapped in the area. He fed and sheltered them until the security agencies escorted them to safety.
These acts are clear indications that Kaduna State would overcome it’s challenges.
Former Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) and mother of three, Anita Uwagbale-Iseghohi has revealed that she’s split from her husband after 11 years of marriage, but 15 years together.
According to her, it was a difficult decision to make but after due consideration and lots of thoughts, she’s taken the decision to become estranged from her husband.
She revealed this in a post shared via social media earlier today. It reads,
Following out almost 15 year relationship as well as a lot of recent thought and careful consideration, I have made a difficult decision to separate from my husband. We are still a family and will always be loving, dedicated parents to our three lovely child.

The police in Lagos state have declared the Togolese cook of a popular Lagos chief, Ope Bademosi, wanted for killing him at his Onikoyi Lane, Parkview Estate yesterday October 31st.
Bademosi was the chairman of Credit Switch Limited. The cook was employed just last Sunday October 28th.
According to reports, residents of the area woke up to the news that the chief had been murdered by his cook who disappeared shortly after the murder.
A resident of the estate who spoke on condition of anonymity said
”I heard a scream from the wife, so I ran outside to their flat and saw her screaming outside with people holding her as she said that her husband had been murdered. When we got inside, we saw the man in a pool of blood with the volume of music increased to the highest level. Already we had called the attention of the estate police before going in and they arrived just on time. According to the wife, she said she left her husband very early this morning to do some transactions in the bank. On her way back, she called her husband and couldn’t hear what he was saying as his words were barely cohesive, and was just muttering words before the call dropped.
“She attempted to call him back but he wasn’t picking up his phone. On getting home, the security was still asleep and couldn’t even respond to her car horns till she got down from her car, to bang on the security’s window; that was when the security eventually woke up to open the gate for her. But unfortunately, on entering, she met her husband lying in a pool of his own blood and couldn’t find the cook who just resumed work on Sunday anywhere. That was when she screamed out for help and sent the security to help her run to see if he can still apprehend the cook. Perhaps because of fear, the security who was just employed on Sunday as well, also took to his heels upon the news that his new boss had been murdered”.
Speaking on the incident, an officer with the Nigeria Police Force Homicide Investigation Team, said
“This is very wicked. In fact, that guy must be a devil itself. He stabbed the man in multiple places. I was the first to enter the apartment. In fact, the music was so loud that even if you were to be killing 20 people here, no one would hear them scream. I was the one that put off the sound upon entering. After committing the act, the guy went to the toilet and pulled off the white uniform meant for cooks he was wearing because it was all stained with blood. He also left the knife he used inside the toilet there. If you see the knife, it’s a very strong, long and sharp knife that could only be authorised for military personnel. Afterward, he ransacked the whole apartment and carted away all valuables he could lay his hands on including an unaccountable sum of money, jewelries and the deceased phone.
“What baffles us more is that, no one seems to know anything about him because he was only employed few days ago and brought from Ondo state to resume just this last Sunday. And they only know him by his first name, which is Sunday. Again, we went through his things and found some old pictures of him putting on a camouflage belonging to republic of Benin military. Also he was in a group picture with all of them wearing Benin Republic military uniform, which suggests that he could be an ex-service man in Benin Republic.”
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ikoyi Division, Ikoyi-Lagos, SP Mustapha Tijani, said the police is on the heels of the cook that is currently on the run. He said the police would release a statement soon.

A Kenyan lady has taken to Facebook to share photos of her former housemaid as she apprises other women not to employ her cause she is a home wrecker and a devil worshipper.
Her post was written mostly in Swahili, but it can be deduced from the little written in English that in the quest to become the next wife, the maid allegedly launched a plan to destroy her marriage by saying unpleasant things about her to her husband whenever she wasn’t home.
