Moscow Times has dug up the News behind the hypes, from the archives, on MMM’s Sergei Mavrodi, the notorious scammer that many Nigerians will not forget in a hurry.
One of Russia’s most famous crooks, Sergei Mavrodi, died of a heart attack on Sunday at the age of 62.
A symbol of the “Wild 90s” which followed the Soviet Union’s collapse, Mavrodi persuaded millions of Russians to put their savings into his MMM pyramid scheme — convinced at least in part by MMM’s memorable television ads featuring everyman Lyonya Golubkov that became the first post-Soviet meme.
After trying his hand at being a State Duma deputy, in 1996 he ran for president. In 2003, he was arrested and sentenced to 4 ½ years in prison for fraud.

“It was like a scene from The Wizard of Oz. When the curtain was pulled and the wizard revealed, Sergei Mavrodi, head of the MMM empire, turned out to be less than a daunting sight.
Not very tall and a little pudgy in the jowls, the reclusive man at the controls of Russia’s largest financial scandal surfaced this week as a shrewd moneymaker who likes butterflies and red foreign cars, but lived a lifestyle that seems a pale shadow of the image of high-flying biznesmeni.
While he ran a scheme that raked in billions of rubles and recently was rated the sixth wealthiest man in Russia, Mavrodi lived spartanly in a single room of his spacious but shabby apartment on the Moscow River. Boxes of dried insects, butterflies and a dead bat mounted under glass hung on the walls.
The only overt signs of his wealth were several foreign cars parked in his apartment complex’s driveway and a $60,000 satellite dish that a reporter from the daily Segodnya newspaper spied in his apartment.
After six months of inaction, the government formally arrested Mavrodi on Friday for hiding from tax officials and for “failing to submit to the order of authorities to open the door,” according to a spokesman with the tax police.
Authorities opened a criminal case against Mavrodi on Thursday for concealing billions of rubles of profits from tax officials in a company called Invest-Consulting. The arrest, following a dramatic raid on his apartment Thursday by armed Interior Ministry troops and tax police, brought to a climax the MMM debacle in which millions of Russians invested in a pyramid scheme.
While the arrest was unusual, the crash of the scheme and the allegations of impropriety were not. Mavrodi has repeatedly started up and then walked away from successful ventures, all the while being dogged by charges of tax violations.
“He was quite a professional businessman who always moved into the most profitable niche of the market,” said Maxim Selivanov, the general director of Steepler, a large computer dealer. But he said Mavrodi was never interested in any particular business, only in the process of making money.
“You can make money nicely, but he makes it crudely,” said Selivanov. “I wouldn’t do business with them.”
Alexei Blinkov, who works in a photo shop on the ground floor of Mavrodi’s apartment in the Frunzenskaya area, said Mavrodi had started a computer sales cooperative in the late 1980s.
Nigerian artiste, Runtown is currently having a dispute with his record label Eric Many.
He is allegedly breaching the contract he signed with them. The latest development comes as a threat from his label boss, Dilly, and it involves a sex tape.
A chat between Dilly and a PR guru has leaked and it speaks of a sex tape which likely shows the singer in bed with a lady whose identity is one of the reasons why the video is in hesitation to leak.

Aisha Buhari, Nigeria’s first lady, has condemned the practice of spending the nation’s resources abroad via medical tourism.
She said she does not believe in Nigerians travelling abroad to receive treatment because “we have all it takes” for world-class medical services.
Aisha said this on Wednesday when she inaugurated Cedarcrest Hospital — where Yusuf, her son, was once treated — in Abuja.
“I believe in making Nigeria a better place to be,” she said, adding: “I don’t believe in spending our resources abroad. We have all it takes to have a hospital like this, from manpower to personnel.”
Aisha said her son “almost lost his life” but the hospital saved him.
“Even after he was flown abroad for further medical attention, they (hospitals and surgeons abroad) did not do anything for him,” she added.
“They asked where the accident happened, where the surgery took place, I said Nigeria, they said excellent.”
In 2017, her husband spent a total of 152 days in a London hospital treating and undisclosed ailment.

According to multiple reports, a 34-year-old Nigerian Engineer, Kufre Uwem has been sentenced to at least 7 years imprisonment over the rape of a teenager in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Uwem, of 6 Waterton Lawn, Stoneywood, Aberdeen, who was a sub-sea project engineer, detained the woman against her will in his flat and then removed her clothing and raped her.
He was also convicted of intent to rape a second woman in her flat.
The offences were committed on October, 18, 2012, and October 30, 2016, at flats in Aberdeen.
Uwem continues to protest his innocence.
At the High Court in Glasgow judge Lord Arthurson told Uwem:
“This was a course of violent and predatory sexual offending, notwithstanding the four years between the two offences.”
The High Court in Glasgow heard that Uwem’s first victim was a first-year student who Uwen met by chance and invited her to his flat. Once there he raped her.
In a victim impact statement to the court the victim said that the rape had “a monumental impact on her life”.
Uwem’s second victim was attacked in her own home. Uwem restrained her, removed her lower clothing with intent to rape her.
He stood with his head bowed as Lord Arthurson told him:
“The consequences are truly catastrophic for you.”
Uwem, who has an MSc in pipe engineering, was placed on the sex offenders’ register.
Uwem and his wife had a lavish wedding in Akwa Ibom State in December 2017.
A Nigerian lady identified as Ebor Lovina has died after a gruesome attack by her boyfriend’s elder brother in Edo state.
The deceased was a graduate of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma – worked at the Sun-Ray Hotel & Suites along Benin-Sapele, Oghoghobi Town, Benin City, the state capital and was allegedly killed by her boyfriend’s elder brother who pestered her for sex all to no avail.
The suspect reacted to her rejection by allegedly setting her on fire.
The victim was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital where she gave up the ghost following injuries she sustained in the fire attack.
Her friends and colleagues have taken to Facebook to mourn the loss.

Slowly the voice began to rise, increasing in tempo, in curiosity I plastered by ears to the hotel door to be sure of what i was hearing;

Quickly i rushed to the door on a rescue mission and knocked very hard, what kind of i have die is that one after a wedding, I thought it was a heart attack or something, until hmmmm, when bro finally unlocked the door it was like someone opened a bakery, the heat that embraced me nearly tore my shirt, it was crazy up in that hotel room. As I got in and observed the state of aunty, I immediately remembered where the scripture said “who God has joined together, let no man separate.”
With the stern look aunty gave me it was obvious she really wanted to die the die that she was screaming.

There was drama at the burial of a deceased lady in Zambia. Her coffin refused to be buried during her funeral.
According to reports, the deceased, identified as Lilian Kanunga was 47-year-old and was not married till she died.
The incident which occurred at Chilombo area of Kakoma district in Mangango, Zambia, bewildered many as the coffin refused to enter the New Apostolic church building for its burial service.
Instead it led its bearers to a house and plunged it through the window breaking glass panes and lodged inside the house.
But for the timely intervention of the police, who controlled the crowd and forced the burial of the deceased that afternoon

Khloe has revealed a shocking discovery she made since her return to the Big Brother Naija House.
