The Delta State Police command have apprehended a 43-year-old Ngozi Ojei and Ewere Samuel (20) for selling a two-week-old baby girl to a widow for N600,000.
Samuel is the mother of the baby. Samuel gave birth to the baby girl while she was Ojei’s housemaid in Aba, Abia State.
But because Samuel could not identify the person who impregnated her, she and Ojei agreed to sell the baby to avoid keeping a bastard child. They sold the baby late January to a woman simply identified as a widow.
Parading them alongside suspected armed robbers, kidnappers and traffickers at the command headquarters in Asaba yesterday, the Commissioner of Police, Zanna Ibrahim, said in November 2016, Ojei asked Loveth Ojie to help her get a housemaid before she brought Samuel.
“In January 2017, the said Ngozi Ojie came to Ekwuoma (in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State) to see the mother of Ewere Samuel after which she took her to Aba.
“The said Ewere Samuel delivered a baby girl and the suspect sold the child. The suspect confessed selling the baby for N600,000,” the commissioner explained.
But Ojei said she and the mother of the baby girl got N250,000 each from the proceeds. While Ibrahim said investigation was ongoing, Ojei’s husband, Mr. Edwin Ojei (50), of No. 22, MCC Osisioma Ngwa, Abia State, who was paraded alongside his wife, said:
“I only came home for burial when I was arrested.”

“The landowner must submit Certificate of Ownership of the landed property and while the civil servant must submit his international passport to the court. The four sureties must swear to an affidavit while the house and office addresses and telephone number will be verified by the court,” she added.

One thousand, four hundred local governments workers in Imo State were sacked last week, according to the state’s chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees.
The chairman, Mr Ndubuisi Uchehara, while confirming the sack on Thursday in Owerri, declared, however, that the union would not confront the state government over it.
He said,
“As a responsible union, we only act when the rights of legitimate worker are infringed upon.
“When you are an absentee worker, labour cannot protect you when you are visited with the right punishment.
“When you reside in Abuja and draw monthly salaries from a local government in Imo, such persons are not worth NULGE’s time and efforts.
“But there are also cases of people, who were wrongfully treated; the union is already handling such cases with Gov. Rochas Okorocha.”
He expressed optimism that people with proven cases of injustice would have their situations addressed.
“Such persons should not panic; we shall put in everything to resolve their matters,” he said.
The sack hit workers from across the 27 Local Government Areas of the state.

The Central Bank of Nigeria, Thursday, announced that they have reintroduced bank charges on certain categories of cash deposits and withdrawals.
This came about three years after the apex bank stopped the charges.
In a circular to all Deposit Money Banks posted on its website, the regulator said the decision to reintroduce the charges on cash deposits was part of the review of charges on deposits and withdrawals under the cashless policy.
It said the decision was taken at the Bankers’ Committee meeting, which held in Abuja two weeks ago.
The circular, signed by the Director, Banking and Payments System Department, CBN, Mr. Dipo Fatokun, stated that the committee decided that the cashless policy should be extended to the remaining 30 states of the federation.
It also directed that with effect from April 1, 2017:
Banks in the states where the cashless policy was already operating, Lagos, Ogun, Anambra, Abia, Kano, Rivers and the Federal Capital Territory, would begin to impose charges on deposits and withdrawals above N500,000.
Banks will from that date begin to charge individuals 1.5% and 2% for deposits and withdrawals between N500,000 and N1m.
Individuals depositing or withdrawing between N1m and N5m will be charged 2% and 3%, respectively.
For amounts above N5m, banks will charge such individuals 3% and 7.5% for deposits and withdrawals, respectively.
This means any cash withdrawal or deposit by an individual under N500,000 would not attract any charge.
With regard to corporate customers, the CBN stated:
that deposits and withdrawals under N3m would not attract any charge,
but that customers depositing or withdrawing between N3m and N10m would be charged two per cent and five per cent, respectively.
Also for deposits and withdrawals between N10m and N40m, customers will be charged three per cent and 7.5 per cent, respectively.
Deposits or withdrawals above N40m by corporate customers will attract a charge of five per cent and 10 per cent, respectively.
According to the CBN, the new policy on charges will be implemented in selected states on May 1 and August 1, this year; while the total implementation will be concluded on October 1.
The regulator noted that the committee agreed that income generated from the processing fees above the allowable cash limits would be shared between it and the banks in the ratio of 40:60.
However, the CBN said that existing exemptions to the policy such as revenue generating agencies of the federal, state and local governments (for lodgements) will be sustained. Also exempt from the processing fees are embassies, diplomatic missions, multilateral and aid agencies.
The CBN directed lenders to train their employees to enlighten customers on the new policy.

World leader of the Catholic masses, Pope Francis has delivered another criticism of some members of his own church, suggesting it was better to be an atheist than one of many Catholics who he said lead a hypocritical double life.
In improvised comments in the sermon of his private morning mass in his residence, he said:
“It is a scandal to say one thing and do another. That is a double life.
“There are those who say, ‘I am very Catholic, I always go to mass, I belong to this and that association’,” the head of the 1.2 billion-member Roman Catholic church said, according to a Vatican Radio transcript.
He said some of these people should also say
“my life is not Christian, I don’t pay my employees proper salaries, I exploit people, I do dirty business, I launder money, [I lead] a double life’.”
“There are many Catholics who are like this and they cause scandal,” he said. “How many times have we all heard people say ‘if that person is a Catholic, it is better to be an atheist.”
Since his election in 2013, Francis has often told Catholics, both priests and lay people, to practise what their religion preaches.
In his often impromptu sermons, he has condemned sexual abuse of children by priests as being tantamount to a “satanic mass”, said Catholics in the mafia excommunicate themselves, and told his own cardinals to not act “as if they were princes”.
Less than two months after his election, he said Christians should see atheists as good people if they do good.

A 19-year-old Zimbabwean boy, identified as Trymore Chibwe, has exposed a 40-year-old married woman, Memory Tete, who allegedly forces him to 10 sex sessions daily.
Chibwe said he noticed that his ‘sex mate’ was sexually involved with five other men after she left him for another man.
According to Zim News, their affair was exposed after the teenager spoke out and the duo was summoned before the Masango village court headed by the village headman, Caleb Masango.
Speaking before the village headman on Wednesday, Chibwe said,
“It started well in my life as memory took me to her home when I was in grade six. I was going to school at the same time herding cattle.
“We started having sexual intercourse in 2012 and would do 10 rounds per day. She would stock the sperms and then go to South Africa to sell them.
“My father caught us red handed having sex in 2014. He was passing by and he heard the explicit sounds and forced his way into the house where he caught us pants down.
“He lodged a complaint with the police but they never took it seriously because she is so influential in the society.

“After I finished my grade seven, I got $30 from the woman for the services I rendered, so I left to my uncle’s place to stay but the woman still followed me, pleading for me to come back since I had witnessed her dumping a foetus at her homestead.
“But problem started when the woman dated Mafana Gideon who threatened and chased me away.
“I kept on demanding my money but Gideon continued to threaten me and now I am failing to sexually satisfy my wife whom I married,” the teenager added.
Narrating her own side of the story, Tete confirmed cheating with several men including the teenager. She also confirmed dumping a foetus secretly at her homestead in the presence of Chibwe and one Madzimai Netsai.
She said she was sex starved since her husband Chamunorwa Hofisi was based in South Africa.
Tete said,
“On allegations that I have been harvesting sperms, Chibwe is only after finding ways to tarnish my image after he learnt that I was dating another man.
“He is still pestering me for sex and I am denying he visit me anytime even during the day until one day that he clashed with one of my lovers,” the 40-year-old added.
Speaking further, she denied involvement in sperm harvesting. She said,
“My visit to South Africa was not to sell sperms as alleged by Chibwe.
“I was visiting my husband, who later learned about my affair with Chibwe from the villagers but he forgave me since he understands the fact that I was sex starved.
The village headman, who presided over the hearing of Tete’s illicit affair with the teenager said, “Following revelations of abortion during the trial, the case will be referred to the police.
“We are still carrying out investigations and findings will be made public soon.”

A jealous ex-husband reportedly emptied a bottle of lighter fluid all over his ex-wife and lit fire on her, leaving her with horrific burns all over her body.
Rungruedee Sithibut is lucky to be alive after 30% of her skin was torched in the horrific incident, which happened in Thepkrasattri, in Thaland District, Phuket Province, Thailand, yesterday.
According to the Police, the woman was brutally beaten by her 50-year-old ex Somkuan Jongsuk before the arson attack.
Sun UK reports that the officers stated that the 43-year-old victim is still in nearby Thalang Hospital where doctors continue to work on her battered and burned body following the attack at a nursery school where she works as a cleaner.
The majority of the burns are on her left arm, left shoulder and down her back.

Captain Kraisorn Boonprasop of Thalang Police said:
“Mr Somkuan came to Thepkrasattri Municipality Kindergarten to meet with Ms Rungruedee at about noon.
“Ms Rungruedee was working when Mr Somkuan turned up on a motorbike. He shouted for her before he went inside the building. He poured fuel on her from a glass bottle and lit her on fire.
“Ms Rungruedee ran into the teachers’ room and doused herself with water from the bathroom, but Mr Somkuan followed her.
“There were five teachers inside the room, but they were too frightened of Mr Somkuan to restrain him. “Instead, they called the police and after Mr Somkuan left they helped Ms Rungruedee.
“Luckily all children already had gone home at that time.”

Police added there was a history of domestic abuse between the pair and have been called out to them before – but this was the worst attack.
It is believed the ex-husband regularly keeps tabs on his ex-wife and cannot stand the fact they split up, regularly working himself up in a rage believing her to be with other men.
“They have had serious arguments before, and some of those arguments have even ended up at the police station,” Capt Kraisorn Boonprasop added: “Her ex-husband is still jealous even though they broke up a year ago, but she still helps him from time to time.
“Not long ago Somkuan was arrested for physical abuse while being drunk, and she bailed him out.
“Ms Rungruedee has not filed any formal complaint as she is still in hospital, but already because of the nature of this attack police must take action.
“Police are now tracking down Somkuan to face legal action. He is a Phuket native and we believe he is still on the island.”

The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested a student of a college of technology in the state, Yetunde Kayode, for allegedly tricking her friend into the hands of a 10-man gang of rapists, Punch reports.
The culprits allegedly raped the victim as part of the ritual to initiate her into an occult group. Yetunde, who was arrested in Ijero Ekiti few days ago, was accused of specialising in recruiting vulnerable girls for the gang to rape, particularly members of Ave cult. .
According to a detective, part of the initiation process is that female students are blindfolded and gang-raped by cult members.
“They are thereafter warned to shut their mouth as initiates or risk losing their lives.
But the last victim defied the threat and reported to her parents who informed the police, which led to the arrest of three of the cult members,” he added.
A source in the school said many female students had suffered similar fate, but kept their mouths shut to avoid stigmatisation.
Kayode and three of the suspected rapists were among the 26 suspects paraded on Wednesday by the Commissioner of Police in Ekiti, Wilson Inalegwu.
