Kenyan Dad Cuts Teenage Daughter For Talking To A Boy

Kirinyaga-teen

A 48-year-old man is in police custody after he was arrested for physically assaulting his teenage daughter.

Kamau Nyaga from Mwea, Kirinyaga county, Kenya is currently being held at Wang’uru police station following the accusation.

Kamau reportedly assaulted his 15-year-old daughter with a panga seriously injuring her after he saw her talking to a teenage boy.

Kamau, who is a farmer allegedly wounded his daughter three times using a panga after he saw her
speaking to a neighbor’s boy, her schoolmate.

The suspect was allegedly disciplining his daughter following the incident.

A neighbor alerted the police after hearing screams coming from Kamau’s home.

Mwea East OCPD, Kizito Mutoro, confirmed the incident saying Kamau was arrested on Saturday evening following a tip-off from a village elder.

The teenage girl suffered injuries on her right leg and hands with major cuts on her head.

Kizito said the girl was stable after receiving treatment at a local hospital and discharged.

“The girl was treated and released to go home after the doctors confirmed that she was in a stable condition,” said Kizito.

Policeman and Married Lover Die Mysteriously in His Room

The-ambulance

A man identified by his neighbours as a policeman, and his lover, suspected to be a member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Anambra State has been reported dead.

The name of the policeman could not be ascertained but his lover’s name was given as Ifeoma, Punch Metro reports.

Ifeoma, a mother of five and the policeman, a father of three, were found dead on Sunday, in an apartment at Ezinifite Okpuno, Awka-South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

It was gathered that the policeman’s family lived in Lagos, while his lover’s family stayed in Awka.

It was also learnt that Ifeoma told her husband that she was going to attend a church vigil, but ended up at her lover’s house, which was nearby.

A source said, “The woman spent the night with her police lover until a labourer, who was to work for the policeman, came in the morning and discovered their dead bodies.

“The labourer then rushed out and alerted neighbours.

“The neighbours followed him to confirm the incident, before a relative intervened and locked the gate, preventing people from further going inside the apartment.”

Some neighbours interviewed by our correspondent said the victims might have been killed by generator fumes.

One of them said, “There was the sound of a small generator throughout the night in his apartment. But at about 4am, it went dead; maybe the fuel got finished.

“The policeman lived on the third floor of the house. As a policeman, he hardly stayed around, but each time he was around, everybody would know, because he would run his generator all through the night. Everybody called him ‘Officer’, but I think he was an inspector.”

Throughout, yesterday sympathisers gathered in clusters at the gate of the three-storeyed building, discussing the incident.

The building, it was gathered, belonged to the younger brother of the deceased policeman.

After a long wait by residents, who wanted to catch a glimpse of the dead bodies, security men, comprising local vigilantes, the police and men of the NSCDC, arrived at the scene and dispersed the crowd.

The security operatives later took away the corpses in an ambulance.

When contacted on the development, the state Police Public Relations Office, ASP Nkeiru Nwode, said, “With due respect, the man in question is not a member of the Nigeria Police Force and the woman’s identity is yet to be ascertained.

“I have not yet been fully briefed on the story. As soon as I get the details, I will communicate with you, please.”

Freeze Shares His Thoughts on Pastor Adeboye’s Statements

daddy-freeze-e1450067584877

Few weeks ago, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor E.A Adeboye shared a sermon that got people talking on social media.

In his sermon, which was to some single people in his congregation, he referenced the ability of a woman to cook and pray as one of the criteria for marriage.

Taking to his website, OAP Freeze has weighed in on the trending topic.

He says:

This week, I got so many emails and DMs asking for my opinion on Pastor Adeoye’s message about marrying a woman who can’t cook etc. This, being a spiritual issue cannot be tackled with my usual ‘fayose’ approach, as I needed to hear from God first.

There were four main issues raised and I will try my best to address all. I wasn’t in the service and I am relying on the emails and DMs as a point of reference.

The only part of the message I agree 100% with, is that no one should marry a man or woman who can’t pray for 1 hour straight. The bible instructs us in the book of 1st Thessalonians chapter 5 verse 17 to “pray without ceasing”. In as much as we like to operate under the assumption that we control our own lives, in my opinion, the greatest part of our lives is controlled by external forces. Let’s take the instance of former president Olusegun Obasanjo who was a free man in 1996, by 1997 he was imprisoned for treason, by 1998 he was released from prison after the sudden death of Abacha and by 1999 he was president of the federal Republic of Nigeria. If in 1996, Obasanjo had known he was going to be in prison the following year, he probably would have gone to sew prison uniform, awaiting his conviction. Also if in 1997, with a life sentence hanging around his neck, he had known that in a little over a year he would become president, he would have made adequate preparations, but guess what? Life happens. I remember having a chat over drinks with my boss Mr. Moussalli, who told me that he used to stay in Nice, when Lebanon was being bombed because it was safe and calm. Who would ever have guessed that Nice itself was going to be the scene of a gruesome terrorist attack about a month ago? So wisdom doesn’t guarantee safety and strength doesn’t guarantee bread. (Ecclesiastes 9:11) Even the strongest man and the richest man in the world put together cannot control a hurricane.

“When life happens during your race, you will need a sufficient amount of grace!”~FRZ

This Grace can only be received through ceaseless prayer!

Talking about marrying a woman that cannot cook is another kettle of fish entirely, as I do not see why this is a criteria for marriage in 2016. If your woman can’t cook you have many options which include teaching her, hiring a cook, cooking your own meals or eating out and each has its own distinct and enjoyable flavour. Imagine serving your woman a meal in bed on a Saturday morning, she would gladly retaliate with a favor ‘wink’.

About marrying a man that has a job I can’t disagree more, especially coming from a man of God who is supposed to preach faith and grace as against logic. With the present state of the Nigerian economy, in my own opinion, at least 10% percent of couples will experience job losses within one week of marriage, considering the way companies are laying off staff. A friend of mine lost his job the 3rd day after his wedding, and another friend lost his job 2 days before his first son was born. So why place so much emphasis on having a job, when there is hardly any job security in Nigeria, and you could lose that job in a heartbeat! So the wife of my friend who lost his job 3 days after their wedding should file for a divorce?

Another thing I heard that Daddy allegedly said was that anyone who wanted sex every day should come for deliverance. It’s much easier for a man in his 70s to preach this, and as I turned 40 this year it’s a bit easier for me to understand. However, I would have walked out on anyone trying to preach this to me at 31 as it meant setting myself up for fornication since my woman would probably say “Daddy said it’s not food so it’s not every day”

The bible is very clear on this, as it states in the book of 1st Corinthians chapter 7 verse 4, that “The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband doesn’t have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife”

Therefore, refusing your spouse sex is dangerous and is not supported by God, as it can lead to adultery which has more serious consequences than daily sex. I hear that there are some tribes in Nigeria that if you marry from, and cannot satisfy daily, you dig the grave of that union with your own hands.

Everyone is physically different, therefore our needs for sex differ.

In my humble opinion, sexual compatibility is of a far greater relevance to a successful marriage than sexual frequency.

Therefore, my advice is; choose your spouse wisely, while in constant prayer, as being single is miles better than being in a bad marriage! ~FRZ

Read How a Lady Pranked Her Pastor With a False N40k Thanksgiving Credit Alert

APRIL 1ST

I made sure my phone was loaded with 500 naira recharge card.. I was very happy and agile, super ready to prank some folks.

Despite what I caused with the prank I played on my neighbour’s husband last year, I was determined to have fun this year no matter what.

I had no friends I could call because all of us don prank each other tire. Na those kind people you go call and them go answer u like “you think say we no sabi say today na april fool ” oloobe :

As the saying goes, in everything you do, put God first .. I decided to start with God.. I changed my number to private and Dialled my pastor ‘s number, Pastor Tonye.

I dialled his number.. Like 3 times. He no gree pick.. I tried it again twice. He didn’t pick.

Haha maybe because na private number.. Abi pastor dey fear make he pick call may blood dey comot for mouth

I then used my second sim to text him that I have remmited the sum of 20,000 naira to his account for thanksgiving for a Miracle God did for me and another 20k for painting the church “s fence.

Less than 2 mins , the pastor called my 2nd sim and started raining prayers on me.

The God that knows you and your deeds in secret will reward you.you will expand.. You will this, you will that.

Baba no even check whether alert has entered or where I got the money from.. If I be armed robber or not, he no ask… Money is money.

He asked of my identity but I simply replied…”Keep me anonymous.” and then ended the call.

I waited for like twenty minutes when the pastor would be wondering why the alert has not entered and then sent him the April fool text.

“April Fool Sir.. Have a blessed day”… I added the sir so the insult wouldn’t be too grave.

I could imagine how painful it will be for the Man of God to check his phone expecting an alert of a loyal church member thanksgiving only to meet such a discouraging message.

Am sure he must have opened the gates of hell and cursed me with the holy tongue and verily verily I say into you, his curse did work on me..

Social media users who read her story have however seriously trolled her for the unbelievable idea.

According to them, she had gone too far with the idea of April Fool.

Eucharia Anunobi Talks About The Discrimination She Gets From Colleagues For Turning Born Again

eucharia

Veteran actress, turned Evangelist, Eucharia Anunobi in a recent interview opened up on the discrimination and challenges of being a born-again christian.

On how her colleagues relate with her a repented actress, she said:

“I remember years ago when I gave my life to God, my colleagues were laughing at me. ‘Your mates are busy doing aristo, your mates are busy seeing governors, your mates are busy going to the clubs in Victoria Island, Ikeja, and everywhere, you sey na church you wan go’.

They used to say that ‘something is wrong with Eucharia’. ‘Can you imagine with all her degrees, and doctorate in waiting, na to go church?’ But today, by the grace of God, where I sit they can’t sit; where I go they can’t go. I sit with governors and presidents not for aristo, and not for someone to take me to a corner of a room to sleep with me.

I am not among the superstars they would say, ‘that one get good shape, go corner her for hotel for me’ and they come and meet you only in the night.

They don’t need to take me to any corner of the room through Personal Assistant. They call me to the lobby of the governor or president’s chapel to pray and declare the word of God Almighty. And when I am done, they shake my hands and say, ‘lay hands on me’.

As an evangelist, would she still do some raunchy roles, she told The Entertainer,

“If they give me the one of Ashawo, I will do. But then, I’m not going to smoke, because I don’t smoke in real life, and I’m not going to drink. I can simulate, for instance, like in drinking, but then, I might not wear clothes that will reveal parts of my body. There is one I did with Mama Patience, we went to rob a bank; there’s a film we went to rob a bank. We were carrying AK-47; the gun is heavy o! The title of the movie is Widow’s Gang.”

“We are being persecuted,” – Nigerian witches and wizards cry out

witchcraft

A group in Edo state, has complained that its members were being persecuted, pleading that the persecution should stop.

This was made known by Dr Okhue Iboi, the Publicity Secretary of Witches and Wizards Association of Nigeria (WITCAN), while speaking about the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State, shortly after their meeting in Irrua, Edo State.

His words:

“Members of our association are apolitical. We are not partisan. Our own concern as stakeholders in the project called Nigeria is for peace and unity to reign. Our own witches group are not evil.

We do good, and promote whatever will bring progress to mankind. We love Nigeria.

We were holding our monthly meeting at Irrua, and, suddenly, while looking at our crystal ball in the coven, we saw some things that were frightening concerning Edo and thereafter I was mandated as the spokesperson of the group to deliver this message to the governor, and other stakeholders that have one thing or the other to do with the governorship election in Edo State.

But we are making a special appeal to Governor Oshiomhole because he is the Chief Security Officer of the state.

He should liaise with the police, INEC and other stakeholders to ensure that peace is maintained before, during and after the elections.

“Witches are not joking over this Edo election. We will not allow any individual or group to destroy the state or give it a bad name.

It is unfortunate that many Nigerians are hypocrites. When they hear witches or read about witches, what comes to their mind is evil or darkness. For our own witches group, we are children of light. We are for good.

Have people forgotten that even in the Bible there is a story of King Saul who consulted a witch when he was about to go into a battle to enable him know how the battle will go?

Again people tend to forget that Nigeria is a secular state, Nigeria doesn’t belong to only Christians and Muslims, the nation is for all faiths. They should stop persecuting witches or look at us with disdain.

As stakeholders they should allow us to make our own contributions to the growth and development of the country.”

The witches spokesperson added that the election is going to be a straight battle between the candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, Godwin Obaseki, and that of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Pastor Ize Iyamu.

“The battle is a straight one between Iyamu and Obaseki, and the election is going to be hotly contested. But on who is going to win, we are holding an emergency meeting at Ofosu next Wednesday, and the person who is going to win the election will be revealed to us at that meeting.”

Delsu-e1449604762216

A lecturer at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has been arrested in a hotel, trying to sleep with one of his students.

The lecturer, names withheld, was arrested n3ked at the Wembley Hotel in the University town with the student who arranged the arrest.

The victim told the police on July 19 that her Course Adviser in Primary/ Nursery Education Department at the University has been harassing her sexually and threatening to fail her if she refused to yield to his sexual desire.

Two days after, during Mathematics examination, the victim raced to the police station to inform detectives that she has agreed for a particular date for sex with the lecturer.

The state Commissioner of Police, Zanna Muhammed Ibrahim, at the command headquarters in Asaba, yesterday, said the lecturer was caught naked and ready to take on the student.

“Based on the complainant’s feigned acceptance of the suspect’s demand, she was taken to Wembley hotel, Abraka, by the suspect where detectives were invited and arrested him in the hotel room after he had already undressed,” he said.

The CP said investigation had commenced on the matter.

I Helped My Friend to Rape His Girlfriend then I Also Took Turn in Raping Her – Fake NSCDC Officer Recounts

fake NSCDC

Emmanuel Nwamma, a fake Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps personnel, has confessed to an act of rape.

The man mae the confession after he was arrested by the Oyo State Police Command at Agbowo area of Ibadan.

He said: “I didn’t know what came over me when I assisted my friend, Emeka, to hold his girlfriend’s hands while he was raping her in my room. After he finished, I also raped her. I didn’t know that my friend intended to rape her girlfriend when he said he was bringing her to my house and I gave him the key to my room”.

According to New Telegraph, while parading 27-year-old suspect arrested in connection with several criminal offences including r*pe and armed robbery at the Eleyele Police Command, Ibadan, yesterday, the Police Commissioner, Mr Leye Oyebade, said that:

“Nwamma (20) and another one still on the run, abducted their victim named Blessing (16) from her father’s residence at Ojokondo Street, Agbowo on July 6, 2016 around 1.45 p.m and took her to Ajao Street, Agbowo Express, Ibadan where both men took turns to rape her.

“The suspects threatened their victim with knife and scissors after which she was subdued before committing the criminal act. The arrest of the suspect followed a report made by the victim’s father after he was alerted by her daughter’s friend who was with her when she was forcibly taken away by the r*pists.

“The suspect confessed to the crime and exhibits recovered from him are: two pairs of NSCDC uniform, five mobile phones, one beret, a belt and other items. The identity card found on the suspect bears his photograph but a different name, Falade Elijah”, the police boss said.

Confessing to the crime, Nwamma, said the victim was his friend’s girlfriend, adding that he only gave his friend, Emeka, his house key when he told him that he was taking his girlfriend home.

“I don’t even know that my friend has the intention to r*pe her, but I just saw myself assisting him to hold her hands and we both raped her together.

“I am not a real civil defence officer. I am just using it to scare people. The uniform belongs to my brother- in-law” Nwamma said.

Speaking with Blessing, she however denied knowing any of the suspects before the day she was raped.

According to her, “I was only in front of my father’s house when I saw the two men on a motor bike before they parked.

“They called me to come and show them a direction of a place they said they were going. I was forced to climb the motorcycle and they threatened me with a knife not to shout. I was taken to a house where both men took their turns to rape me” she said.

My Older Wife Is A Jealous Woman – Diamond Platinumz

daimondold

Diamond Platinumz is married to a woman who is older than him and she is a very jealous wife who doesn’t really feel comfort when it comes to his female fans.

Whenever he is out to shoot music videos, she will not let him rest until she is sure that no lady is trying anything funny around her man.

He said:

“Whenever I’m shooting videos, she’s not always there, but she could call me up to 50 times. When I eventually show her the video, and she watches some scenes where I’m frolicking with women, she asks me why I did that. But I make her understand that I’m a musician, and that’s part of my job.”

He continued, “There was a time I was in Europe for a tour, and I tweeted ‘Where my ladies at …’ She took offence to that and said why was I asking for the ladies, that do I want them to come and meet me. I told her it means nothing, and it’s only part of our artistic language.”

Dark Skin Actress Get More Roles Than Fair Skin Actress, Do You Agree?

chease-eze3

Human wants are unlimited and when it comes to Nollywood, one cannot really understand the truth about all some allegations leveled against some practitioners and this make fans wonder what the industry was turning into.

Some time ago, some set of Nollywood practitioners complained that the industry tends to favour more light skin actresses than dark skin ones and this became a topic of some sort.

Now, actress, Chelsea Eze, has come out to challenge such claims by stating that those with dark skin get more movie roles than the fair skin actors.

She explained sighting example with Kunle Afolayan’s hit movie ‘Figurine’ that the producer, had to turn her down when she approached him for a role with the excuse that she was too fair for the roles needed.

In her words, “There have been some projects that I was supposed to be involved in but I was told that I am too light skinned for the part. I remember when Kunle Afolayan wanted to do the cast for Figurine, I asked him if I could come for auditions but he told me that I am too ‘yellow’. There are some characters you need to play but you have to be dark skinned. I have had cases where I have to play some certain character and the make-up artiste makes me look very dark. Sometimes my complexion does not always favour me but I will not change my skin hue for any reason.”

Muhammad Shamsuddeen Aliyu was reportedly enrolled into the Professor Ango Abdullahi International School, in Zaria, when he was just one-and-a-half year old.

The toddler is reported to have achieved the rare feat through the school programme which allows kids to be registered into the boarding programme from age one. By age three, Muhammad had memorised the the whole Qur’an.

Muhammad’s father, Dr. Aliyu Shamsuddeen, who is also the head of the school, disclosed that the rationale behind admitting children at the tender age of one is that the brain easily assimilates education in its forms.
Speaking on his son’s feat, he said:

“We have the belief that from the time a child stops sucking the breast of his mother up to adolescence, the brain is wide open and this allows a child to easily assimilate what he or she is taught. This is why we are admitting children from this age, specifically for Qur’anic memorisation.

“Muhammad is not the only boy that can memorise the Holy Qur’an here, but his difference with others is the fact that he was able to win competitions at various stages up to the international level. We have children from different parts of the country who are here with us studying the Holy Qur’an and Western education.”

Dr. Aliyu went on to reveal that his wife and Muhammad’s mother had been uncomfortable with the idea of admitting him at such a young age, but had later relaxed as soon as his talents began to reveal itself.

Muhammad reportedly began attending Qur’anic recitation competitions from Zaria local government. Following his success at the local level, he went on to represent the school at the state level, as well as the state at the national level.

His pace paved the way for him to represent the country at the International level In Saudi Arabia where he the second in his age category.

As part of his prize, Muhammad was given the privilege of choosing a country where he would be sponsored for a picnic by the Emir Muhammad Sanusi II, while he is in Saudi Arabia.

Apart from his memorisation talents, Muhammad can speak Arabic and English Languages fluently, while carrying out all the normal activities of a Nursery II pupil.

The deputy Chief Imam of Tudun Jukun, Zaria Juma’at mosque, Ustaz Bashir Lawal, disclosed to correspondents that it is possible for a 3-year-old to be blessed with the memorisation of the Holy Qur’an but that in the history of previous generations of Islam, there has never been a time when a 3-year-old was reported to have memorised the complete holy book.

“Allah can do anything as part of justifying the sacredness of the Holy Qur’an, but in the history of Islam, that is the generations that the prophet (SAW) stamped as the best, there was no reported case of anyone who memorised the Holy the Qur’an at that age. There were instances where children of nine and above were reported to have memorised the Holy Qur’an, but not three.”

We can safely say Muhammad is a special breed and will go on to stand out among his age mates.

In an exclusive chat with Sunday Scoop, popular Nollywood actress and producer, Uche Jombo, said before she got married five years ago, she never dated anybody that lived in Nigeria.

When asked how it feels being married to a man who lives in America, the mother of one said the feeling was not strange as she never dated any man that lived in Nigeria.

“Before I got married, I had always dated people who lived outside Nigeria. As a result, being married to someone who lives abroad does not seem bizarre. I didn’t plan to marry someone who lives abroad. Rather, it just happened.”

She advised ladies not to be pressurised into getting married.

“Marry because you know this is what you want to do once in your lifetime. You have to be married to someone you can do everything with. Don’t marry because people say it is time to get someone. Get married for yourself. The pressure today will not be worth the ache tomorrow.”

See What Militants Vowed To Do If Boko Haram Kills Christians & Burns Churches

By Emma Amaize For Vanguard

THE Niger Delta Revolutionary Crusaders, NDRC, Saturday, vowed that it would carry out reprisal attacks on Muslims and mosques in the Niger Delta region if Boko Haram kills Christians and burn down churches in the north, as threatened by its new leader, Abu Masab el Barnaw, last Wednesday.

Spokesperson of the militant group, W O I Izon-Ebi, in a statement, said: “We want to alert Nigerians and the world that the Islamization plot has been proven by the Boko Haram new leader Abu Masab el Barnaw that their new mission is to kill all Christians and burn down all churches.”

“But, we want to warn them that we, the Niger Delta youths, in this 21st century will not accept killing of innocent Christians or burning of churches. That if they try it in the north or any part of Nigeria, we the Niger Delta youths will not see any Muslim or mosque in the Niger Delta,” it said.

Its words: “We are not against President Buhari granting the Boko Haram amnesty if their sole purpose is to own an Islamic caliphate in the north, but they should not shift it to the Niger Delta.”

“All we know and want is resource control and true federalism, if truly they believe in one Nigeria, and are working harder to build a prosperous One Nigeria, let them shift their Operation Crocodile Tears to the Fulani herdsmen and the Boko Haram that is threatening the unity and peace of Nigeria,” the group asserted.

We are all Avengers NDRC called on President Muhammadu Buhari to demonstrate that leadership as the current leader and the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria, just as former President Goodluck Jonathan showed by visiting him (Buhari) to indicate that he believes in the unity of Nigeria and was not part of the planned declaration of the Niger Delta Republic.

“I’m teaching in a public school and the experience has not been bad at all” – First Class Graduate

Ogunkoya-Opeyemi1

Ogunkoya Opeyemi, 20, is a first-class Biochemistry graduate of Covenant University, but she is currently undergoing the National Youth Service Corps programme, where she was deployed in a secondary school to teach. Interestingly, Opeyemi, who had 4.70 CGPA in the 2014/2015 academic session, tells TUNDE AJAJA she is enjoying the experience. She shares more about her experience in this interview

You graduated last year, what have you been doing since then?
I’m currently undergoing my National Youth Service Corps programme. I’m teaching in a public school and the experience has not been bad at all.

It must have been a lot of work to graduate with a first class. Was it?
Earning a first class in Biochemistry wasn’t an easy task. It took a lot of hard work, dedication, commitment and sacrifices. In all, it wasn’t my efforts that counted, only God’s grace did.

Apart from God’s grace, were there other things you did differently to be better?
It was my decision from the start to put my very best into all my endeavours while in school. But there is more to success than determination. So, I ensured I attended all classes, did all assignments and committed two hours to study every day. I was always time conscious, I organised my activities and prioritised effectively. I read for minimum of two hours daily, but during tests and exams, I studied for as long as it took. Sleep was not very important to me during examinations; I only ensured that I fed well. Also, I borrowed books from the library but I preferred to read in a well-ventilated classroom, especially on top floors where I could have a view of a beautiful landscape.

Was having a first class a do-or-die affair for you?
The most important thing would be that I put in my very best in earning whatever result I had, but if I didn’t graduate with a first class, I would have been disappointed but accept it as the will of God. The motivation during my 100 level orientation programme was one of the things that fuelled my desire to graduate with a first class. Some staff and senior students motivated us and that was helpful. So, right from my first semester in school, I made up my mind to graduate with a first class, coupled with the huge financial investments my parents put into my education. I wanted to justify their investment, and I felt that would be the least way to appreciate their sacrifices. I mean it’s only fair to make our parents feel good and put smiles on their faces for their unalloyed support. In return, they threw a graduation party for me and I got several cash gifts from other family members and friends. Meanwhile, I had the most amazing lecturers. They were bright and profound in their various fields. Their primary concern was to impart students with knowledge and to raise global leaders. They were not only lecturers but also parent figures, so they helped too. There are many factors that influence success in academics. Apart from hard work, fantastic lecturers, people need to have passion for what they do, because passion is what drives one to success. Choosing a course you have interest in matters.

What attracted you to Biochemistry?
As a child, I wanted to be a space explorer, but I later found Biochemistry interesting, being a very broad field in natural sciences. I chose to study Biochemistry because of my interest in natural systems and the diverse fields in which the principles of Biochemistry can be applied. Being a very broad course, it required constant reading, ability to understand complex systems, critical reasoning and research skills. Although these skills are required to successfully study the course, anyone lacking in any of them will definitely have the skills imparted by the end of the programme. It’s also a course that has a lot to do with practicals and I enjoyed the practical classes, especially those pertaining to molecular biology, because some things that people see as abstract are simplified and you witness these things yourself during practicals. The knowledge you get from that enhances your understanding of the subject because you have seen things for yourself. The only occasions I got tired of practicals were the times I had to work till about 3am, and that was during my final year project. However, I’m particularly interested in environmental toxicology and the effect of toxic pollutants on human health.

Why the interest in that aspect?
I had observed with serious concern the impact of pollution in the world right now, and one very important aspect of that is climate change. I’m really interested in the effect of human pollution on the climate and the environment, especially in Nigeria; talking about the effect of toxins on human health, in terms of air pollution, water pollution and land pollution. The harmful effect of these things on humans can be severe, and I think we should pay attention to it. So, I’ll do a study on it.

What are the most common human activities that aggravate these issues?
We have issues of oil spillage, burning of fossil fuel, improper sewage treatment, and many others. Looking at Lagos as an example, some industries channel their effluents into the lagoon, which pollutes the water. That affects people in areas like Makoko, Oko Baba and other areas, in terms of the quality of the water, the survival of aquatic animals and even access to healthy food. It’s those effects that I want to work on, so that people’s lives can be better protected. I’m passionate about this and God will help me to see it through.

Did you participate in any competition or receive any award as an undergraduate?
I participated in the 2015 campus competition hosted by Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. In my first semester in 400 level, I got an award from my department as the best student in Biochemistry. I started having first class since my first semester in 100 level and it was just five of us in the department. I was the second highest in the class.

Do you have role models?
Yes. My role models are Condoleezza Rice, Justice Jumoke Pedro and my lovely mum, Mrs. A. A. Ogunkoya.

Is your performance traceable to how you fared in your primary and secondary schools?
In primary school, I recall taking the first position several times. If I wasn’t the first, I was always one of the top five in my class. I also recall receiving awards of excellence in sciences twice in the primary school. My performance in the secondary school was equally outstanding. There was a system in my secondary school that selected the top 50 students in the set into a class (special class). I maintained the special class all through my stay in school. I would also like to add that I got all A’s in the JSS3 examination organised by the National Examination Council. I had similar performance when I sat for the Senior School Certificate Examination. I took extra tutorial classes and sleepless nights and all glory to God, it was a success. I made all my papers in one sitting with three A’s, three B2’s, two B3’s and one C4. I scored 260 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, which was good but not quite what I expected.

What were you expecting?
My target was to score like 320, but I thank God for what I had. That is why it is good to set a high standard for yourself so that even if you don’t meet up, you would still be above average. It took extensive study to succeed in those exams, which shows that success cannot be accidental. You work your way to it and that was what I did. So, the result is expected. Even if you are intellectually gifted, nothing manifests without a push. And that required push is hard work.

During exams, were there times you went into secluded places?
Yes, there were times I went to secluded places like classes on the topmost floor of very distant college buildings where most people would be too lazy to go. I remember, once I locked myself in a deserted common room so no one would interrupt my reading.

What were your memorable moments while in school?
I remember a time when the sole of my heeled shoe pulled out on my way to Faith Tabernacle on a Sunday morning. I had to walk on bare feet despite my gorgeous dressing. It was quite embarrassing. However, I enjoyed the moments I spent with my friends.

Were you a sociable student or you were always reading when others had gone to have fun?
I wasn’t the sociable butterfly but I had a circle of close friends. I had many acquaintances too. I loved meeting new people, hanging out and doing fun things with my friends. At my leisure, I watched movies, read my anthropology books and spent time hanging out with friends. I spent part of my money on fashion, especially on weaves, clothes and wristwatches, though I saved some part of the money.

Is there anything you wish you had done as a student that you could not do?
I wish I had applied for scholarships to fund my university education but I was never exposed to such opportunities.

Would you want to work based on what you learnt in school or you have interest in other things?
Yes, I would definitely work with my degree in Biochemistry. However, to achieve my career goals, I would need an advanced degree in the environmental sciences but my degree in Biochemistry is the perfect springboard in launching me into a career as an environmental toxicologist and consultant. It will be fulfilling to proffer practical solutions to pressing environmental challenges facing the world today. I’m not limited to any company or organisation, I would like to work in any organisation where I would be relevant in effecting these positive changes.

What should students do to be excellent in the higher institution?
Whatever the situation you find yourself, put in your best, give thanks to God and your reward will surely come. Always remember, you are the architect of your destiny. Also worthy of note is that students should know what time is best for them to read. That works and helps to be in charge of your schedule.

“Little Kids Get Excited Because Of My Boobs” – Annette Cookey

annette cookey

Annette Cookey came to limelight during the MTN Project Fame West Africa, when she emerged the 3rd runner-up in the 2008 edition of the contest.

The singer who started singing when she was 10 doesn’t believe that sexuality can sell music. However, she has five intimidating body parts that she has named.

Annette said “I am sure a lot of people will be wondering what has been happening to me since then. I am not going to say I am a s*x symbol but for some reasons, I often get sexually harassed and that really affected me as a person. It has also affected my career in music because I don’t trust anyone anymore. They will tell you that they want to work with you because you’re so talented, and at the same time, they will want sexual favours from you, and I don’t think that is proper.”

She added “Though, they say s*x sells, but I do not believe in that. I believe people should be modest in whatever they do. And when I refer to the past, people will say that things have changed. At least, I have watched Mary J. Blige a couple of times, and I can’t remember seeing her perform naked, or half naked, and she is not doing bad for herself. I don’t think you have to be naked to sell.

She names five intimidating things about her “My eyes, boobs, voice and my stature. I was standing somewhere recently, and a guy saw my boobs; he had to take some steps backwards and fixed his gaze on my boobs; he didn’t turn. I now asked him what he was doing but he pretended he was not doing anything. Even little children are affected by my boobs. The other day at the Cinemas, some kids offered to buy me lunch because of that. So I get that a lot.
