The Nigerian Catholic Bishops have expressed their complete displeasure over an alleged move by the Minister of Health, in collaboration with foreign organizations to encourage abortion among Nigerian women.
In a communiqué issued at the end of a 3-day second plenary meeting, the Catholic Bishops Conference of Ibadan Ecclesiastical province, has kicked against the alleged move by the Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, in collaboration with foreign organizations, to encourage abortion by increasing the culture of contraception among Nigerian women.
The respected clerics who described the move by the federal government as an ‘anti-life policy’ after the plenary meeting of the province held in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Wednesday
“condemned the recent move by the Minister of Health, Prof Adewole in collaboration with the foreign agencies to commit the federal government to increasing the culture of contraception and subsequently, abortion among our people” , Vanguard reports.
The communiqué signed by its President and Archbishop of Ibadan, Gabriel Abegunrin and Secretary, Bishop Felix Ajakaye noted that “the policy is being done all in the name of providing better maternal health and empowering our people.”
The communiqué reads: “We see such moves as deceptive to our people and harmful to moral values and we ask Nigerians to reject them.”
An annular eclipse that will be visible all over the country with different degrees of totality will occur on Thursday, September 1, the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has said.
NASRDA, in a statement yesterday, said the highest degree of obscurity in Nigeria would be in the southern part of the country, particularly in Lagos where it is expected to have 80% obscurity.
In the statement signed by its Head of Media and Corporate Communications Dr Felix Ale, the agency added that the lowest degree of obscurity would be about 45% and this would be observed in the northern part of the country, particularly in Sokoto.
“The annular eclipse will be observed as a partial or near total eclipse across the nation with Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, expected to be about 60%”, the statement said.
The space agency particularly said the annular eclipse is expected to occur between 7:15am and 10:03am with slight variations in actual timing across the country.
In Lagos, the first contact will occur at about 7:15am while the maximum eclipse will occur around 8:30am and will end by 10:03am, according to NASRDA.
“The eclipse is expected to commence in Abuja around 7:17am, with maximum eclipse to be recorded at about 8:32am and the eclipse will end around 10:00am”, the statement added.
It noted that eclipse is not a spiritual issue but a natural occurrence that can be accurately predicted by science. While appealing to the general public not to panic or adduce any mystical interpretations to this event, the agency advised that nobody should observe the eclipse with naked eyes.

This 71-year-old man has become an internet sensation when photos of him wearing trendy urban clothes were shared online. Wang Zhousong, who raises geese in two farms in Luoyang, Central China’s Henan province, referred to his new celebrity status as “unexpected“.
After serving in the army for 14 years, Wang retired from the People’s Procuratorate of Luoyang in 2007. He then traveled across the big cities in the country, and decided to raise geese four years ago.
He said early this month, some young men found him and wanted to take photos of him. These images were posted online and became popular among internet users who were attracted by his cool expression and attitude.
Following a robbery attack on Wednesday night/Thursday morning, where 4 students were robbed including a lady who was allegedly raped and killed, students of the school earlier on Thursday took to protest grounds over the incident.
Vehicular movement along the major road close to their school, Kotopo-Osiele Road, has been blocked as a result. Policemen and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps deployed to disperse the students, are having a hard time doing so.
Overtime, the students have claimed that there have been reports of robbery attacks on the school but all to no aid from the school’s authorities – this caused them to have the Church where the Chancellor of the school worshiped, vandalized.
The protesting students destroyed the glassed building of the Divine Heights Bible Church and some cars that were in the premises of the Church – they also vandalized a bus along the Abeokuta-Ibadan expressway causing vehicular restraints along the road.
Motives to reach either a student or a school authority has been proved abortive as the school’s main campus has been deserted as at the time of this post.
New photos that have surfaced online, shows the quite embarrassing moment a high-ranking Olympic official was apprehended while he was naked in his son’s Rio de Janeiro hotel room.
President of the Olympic Council of Ireland, Pat Hickey, has been charged with selling tickets for prices higher than face value, in a scheme that could have profits of more than $3.1million.
71 year old Hickey is accused of conspiring with some six others to sell the illegal Olympic tickets. He was arrested in a humiliating fashion while at his son’s hotel room in Rio.
He was naked when cops knocked on the door of his son’s room at a luxury hotel in the upscale Barra da Tijuca neighborhood. Hickey’s wife had told cops he had left for Ireland – but they found him in nearby room registered to his son and found him there.
When cops knocked, Hickey poked his head out from behind a door while wearing nothing.
He asked the officers for a minute to put some clothes on — and walked naked into the bathroom, his buttocks exposed to the officers.
He put on a robe and was taken into police custody semi-nude and in disgrace.
Two prison officials have been this morning killed in Abakaliki prisons, Ebonyi State, after inmates rioted for hours. In the course of the riot some tried to escape but the police foiled their attempts.
Police have cordoned off all roads leading to the facility. Gunshots could be heard intermittently as police battled to recover a firearm allegedly seized from one of the prison officials, a witness said.
It was not immediately clear why the inmates revolted.
A security source said inmates made attempts at escaping after the riot started, and had already broken through a wall when anti-riot policemen arrived and tear gassed them into submission.
The prison is located beside the police headquarters, a proximity that enabled a rapid police police response. Sources say the prison officials were killed by the inmates.
The military commander in the area, and state police commissioner have visited the area and were working to restore normalcy. Police spokesperson, George Okafor, told PREMIUM TIMES the command was working hard to resolve the crisis.
He did not confirm if there were casualties.
“There was an attempted jailbreak and the prisons called in the police. We cordoned off the area and restored nomalcy to the area,” he said. “We will brief you later on the issue once everything have been sorted out.”

Recently, there is this controversy going on in the social media that a man shouldn’t marry a woman who doesn’t know how to cook or a woman who doesn’t pray for an hour. So, I deem it necessary to clarify the issue. As the apostle of marriage, it’s my responsibility to clarify the issue to avoid causing more delayed marriage, separation and divorce in the world.
This is the will of God concerning the issue: You must not use cooking as a criterion for choosing your spouse. Though food is important in life, cooking must not be used as a criterion for choosing a spouse. Why? I tell you three reasons.
First, a woman who doesn’t know how to cook can actually learn how to cook. Second, a woman can employ the services of a professional cook. Third, a husband can tolerate if his wife doesn’t cook very well. Tolerance is important in marriage because everybody has weaknesses, both husbands and wives. If a woman doesn’t know how to cook, it should be regarded as a weakness and the husband has to tolerate in order to be happy.
It’s very wrong for a man to divorce his wife because she doesn’t know how to cook. Nobody used cooking as a criterion for choosing a spouse in the Bible. In fact, when Isaac married Rebekah, he didn’t meet her, it was his servant that proposed marriage to Rebekah on behalf of Isaac and paid the bride price even before Isaac set his eyes on Rebekah. So in Christianity, we don’t use cooking as a criterion for choosing a spouse.
It’s also important you note that praying for an hour must not be used as a criterion for choosing a spouse. There is no scripture that says Christians must pray for an hour before they become good Christians. What Jesus Christ asked his disciples was: why couldn’t they watch with Him for an hour.
Watching is different from praying. And when they failed to watch with him for an hour, they didn’t cease to be Christians. Even Peter, who couldn’t watch for an hour became the head of the disciples. If Peter couldn’t watch for an hour and still became the head of the disciples, why should we use praying for an hour as a criterion for choosing a spouse?
Do you know that vain repletion is a sin in Christianity? Jesus Christ said that we should not speak much in prayer.
In Matthew 6:7-8, the Bible says that speaking much in prayer is a sin. If you need something, you should ask your Father what you need. Just go straight to the point – the Bible says that He already knows what you need, even before you ask Him. So, if you are not yet married and you are a man, never you use cooking as a criterion for choosing your spouse. It’s very wrong. God will not be happy with you if you do something like that.
I am speaking to you as the apostle of marriage that God has sent to correct the wrong doctrines of marriage in the world. Get married, not because a woman knows how to cook, but because she is a good woman. If you marry someone that knows how to cook and she is not good, what happens to you? Man shall not live by bread alone.
If you are a married man under the sound of my voice, never you divorce your wife because she doesn’t know how to cook. You can teach her how to cook or you tolerate her. Marriage is about tolerance. And as a husband, it’s important you note that it’s your responsibility to nourish your wife, tolerate her, forgive her, and take good care of her. It’s a job you have to do.

Graduating Students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe university (UNIZIK), Awka, Theatre and Film Studies Department yesterday shut down the campus with their style to celebrate their final day in school.
The final year, graduating students in a happy mood, appeared in a Primary schools uniforms, socks and knapsack bags for their final examination.
In their uniforms, they all marched, danced and sang different nursery and primary school rhymes.

A Liberian Facebook user who shared the story, stated that the ‘Nigerian’ guy was beaten for alleged crime with his robbery group.
He says the suspected thief was a member of a robbery group who had a mission to execute but came out as a failure leading to the state of the robber seen in the photos.
Micheal Ajereh Collins, Nigerian music producer and artiste better known as Don Jazzy, has said that foreign artistes are scared to make music with him.
He said this while speaking in a recent interview conducted by Boiler room in collaboration with British Council.
“Most of these American artistes would call you, they believe you have something that they like, so they call you to come and try something out”, Don Jazzy said.
“A bunch of people that I have tried to work with or have tried to work with me chicken out at the end of the day because they aren’t really ready for the music change; they want me to tweak it till it gets back to their sound.
“I can give you your sound, but then, you called me for something and then I try to give to my sound and I want you to do your thing on top of it which would give the sound a wider recognition but they say they aren’t ready for this switch drastically. I think they are still scared.”
The 33-year-old Mavin boss said he started paying more attention to music during the Kennis Music era.
“I would say I started listening more during the Kennis music time because after Storm records, then it was a time for Kennis music and they came with Tuface, Remedies and all.
“At that point, I was still in secondary school and I was like “Yo! They were putting a lot of swags into this my work”. So I started taking note of the music and it started shaping me into what I would like to do but then, there was no way for me to do it.”
Don Jazzy also said that Nigerian music is designed to make people happy during their struggles.
“Everyone is struggling; we all have a problem in the country but there are sometimes when we need that peace of mind.
“While some people are consciously trying to make you aware of what is going on in the struggle, there should be other people that would keep you happy when you are going through the struggles and that is where we come in.”

The one and only weightlifter that represented Nigeria at Rio has revealed she has lost the zeal to represent the country at international events.
Mariam Usman, seen in the photo above, left the shores of Nigeria for Brazil, the Commonwealth medallist in the +75kg in weightlifting knowing fully well that winning a medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics would be a tough call.
She would not pretend to be a magician nor claim perfection where there is none. Usman believes one can only reap where one sows.
She competed in the +75 category, amassed 265 kg and finished 8th in her group. While speaking to reporters at the Games Village in Rio, Usman said:
“It is painful to come to the Olympics and see people who are your contemporaries perform better than you; not because you lack the ability but because you were not prepared like them,” she said,
“For me, it is not just about jumping unto the plane every four years to go to the Olympics. Every athlete you see here wants to step on the podium. If you can’t aim to climb up there, you have no business coming to the Olympics. I can only consider going to another Olympics if things change for the better. But if the statues quo is maintained, I don’t think I will go to another Olympics again.”
She said training for the Rio Olympics was non-existent while her counterparts from other countries who are competing here in Brazil have been training for three to four years.
“Olympic gold medal doesn’t come cheap. It is painful that one has to suffer and when competition comes they expect you to win a medal with your blood. “The people you have to compete with had everything they needed: training grants, competitions and are exposed to the most modern equipment. I had nothing. You don’t expect such people who have invested so much to lose to one who don’t even train adequately.”
The African champion said before the 2012 Olympics, she had better training than she did under the current dispensation.
“Yes, I feel 2012 was better. I had better training and my result was better. This time nothing was done to better one’s performance.”
A Chinese woman has reportedly set a Guinness World Record recently with her 17-month-long–and counting–pregnancy.
People’s China Daily reports that the woman, named Wang Shi, became pregnant last February. Her due date was Nov. 15, but the date came and went with Wang’s baby showing no intention of entering the world.
Worried, Wang went to the hospital every seven to 10 days after her due date passed for check-ups. Doctors ruled out a Cesarean in the 14th month of pregnancy because the fetus was still in stage two–not mature enough for the operation.
“Experts say there are women who gave birth after 13 months of pregnancy, but never 17 months. They can’t explain the reason,” said Wang’s husband.
Nevertheless, Wang is now in good physical condition. The baby weighs 3.8 kilograms. She says she will have the C-section by the 18th month

The Police in Ogun State, yesterday, released unconditionally, the 30-year-old trader, Joe Fortemose Chinakwe, who was arrested last Saturday for naming his pet dog ‘Buhari’.
The embattled trader, who was visibly angry after his three-day incarceration in police cell, was let off the hook around 5pm on Tuesday after the intervention of both the Serkin Hausa and President-General of non-indigenes in the state.
It was learnt that the prompt intervention of the elders made the complainant to withdraw the case he reported against the trader at Sango-Ota division which was later transferred to Police headquarters at Eleweran.
However, police sources said both the complainant and suspect were made to sign an undertaking not to cause any breach of peace again.
Speaking to Vanguard after this release, the trader, a father of two from the Niger Delta, who trades on second hand clothing lamented that he was made to suffer for no just cause.
Narrating his ordeal, Chinakwe said:
“It is annoying because the complainant is from Niger Republic and I am sure he is one of those illegal aliens in this country. He connived with one Police Sergeant from the Northern part of Nigeria called Musa, who works at Sango Police division to humiliate me.
Worse still, the Divisional Police Officer there, did not help matters as he refused to entertain any plea from me after I was arrested that Saturday night. He simply ordered his men to throw me into the cell.”
Why dog was named Buhari: Continuing, he said
“I did not commit any offence. I named my beloved pet dog Buhari, who is my hero. My admiration for Buhari started far back when he was a military Head of State. It continued till date that he is a civilian President.
After reading his dogged fight against corruption, which is like a canker worm eating into the very existence of this country, I solely decided to rename my beloved dog which I called Buhari, after him. I did not know that I was committing an offence for admiring Buhari.
Ordeal with Police:
“I was intimidated and thrown inside the cell with hardened criminals for about three days. While I was there, the complainant from Niger Republic and Sergeant Musa from the North kept on taunting me saying people from my part of the country are trouble makers and that after detaining me, they will throw me into prison where I will die unsung.
”Even when my wife came with our baby on her back, they stopped her from giving me food. One of my friends that came to see me was also maltreated.
“While taking me to Eleweran the next day, they handcuffed and chained me together with that my friend. Fortunately, when we got to police headquarters, both the Commissioner of Police and other officers were angry with their colleagues at Sango-Ota. They were wondering loudly why I was brought to the headquarters over such a minor case.
It’s very unfortunate that I have to be so humiliated in my own country because of the antics of a foreigner in connivance with my brother from the North.”
Bien-Aime Baraza found himself in this sticky situation recently after a Former Miss Uganda, Ellah Namtumbwe, tried to kiss him while on stage during their show in the Club Mega Fest event that went down at Sheraton gardens, Uganda.
It first started when the guy sat at the edge of the stage to get a little bit free with the audience, the lady quickly moved forward in between the artiste’s legs looking into his eyes. The artiste didn’t mind. Then, as the artistes kept singing emotionally and tried to lean his back on the floor of the stage, the lady swiftly put his mouth on his manhood center of his trousers.
The crowd shouted and she was about unzipping his trousers when she quickly withdrew, laughing back to her initial position even as the crowd kept screaming and booing at her.
It all seemed like fun and everyone was cool after that. But maybe because she was not rebuked the first time, she jumped on stage not long after the artiste came back to perform again.
Namtumbwe, who was in the VIP section, ran on stage as soon as Sauti Sol got there and tried to force a kiss on Bien-Aime who denied and embarrassed the former Miss Uganda.
She also started begging for the kiss but Baraza was having none of that. The move forced Bien and other members of the band to move to the other side of the stage for the last bit of their performance to avoid the love-stricken ex-Miss Uganda.

The German team has qualified for the Final Match at the Rio 2016 as they’re set to face Brazil after winning Nigeria 2 goals to Nil in the semi-final match which was played tonight, August 17th.
The Germans scored in the 9th minute through Lukas Klostermann and pressured from then on as the Nigerian defensive line looked shaky and lacked some solidity, if not for the hard work of Troost Ekong at the defense, the African champions would have conceded more goals.

The second half started with Samson Siasia not making any change and the team showed some liveliness and more tactical awareness after the break. Nigeria’s players looked distraught at the final whistle but will have some consolation as they will play Honduras in the third place match for a Bronze medal.
A man has been arrested after he allegedly doused insecticide in his neighbor’s pot of soup.
Gordon Daniel, a resident of Ajegunle was accused by the neighbour, Mrs. Saidat Shakiru of putting insecticide in a pot of soup she was cooking on Tuesday.
It was gathered the woman had left her soup pot on the fire to attend to another issue only to return and discover that the soup reeked of sniper, a poisonous liquid insecticide.
The woman was said to have accused Daniel who was the only resident of the compound at home when she was cooking.
She was said to have alerted the landlady who resides on the topmost floor of the storey building as well as her husband who was at work before the matter was reported to the Baale of Aiyetoro street, Saheed Fakunle.
According to a resident:
“Sadiat and the suspect were at home when she was cooking the soup. The woman allegedly went outside to buy something and before she came back Daniel had doused sniper into the soup she was cooking.
“When the woman opened the soup pot she perceived an offensive odour from the soup and she sensed foul play. The angry woman drew the attention of the landlady to what she had observed.
“Her landlady asked whom she suspected. Since there was nobody at home, she accused Daniel of the deed. When her husband, Shakiru returned from work, she explained her predicament about the soup she was cooking and the matter was moved to the Baale.
“After carrying out investigation, the Baale handed over the suspect to the police alongside the pot of soup.”
The Nation gathered that the suspect, who blamed his actions on the devil, said he was angry because the woman usually insulted him over electric bill.
“The woman has been insulting me over electricity bill. I don’t know what got over me so I decided to put sniper inside their soup to punish her. I am sorry. I regret what I have done. She insulted me so much because of the electricity bill if not I don’t have any problem with her and her husband,” he said.
The owner of the house, Taiye Aroyewun frowned at the suspect’s action, calling him a madman.
He said:
“The man must be a madman to have attempted to wipe out an entire family. Now that he has been caught, he’s pleading and trying everything possible to settle the matter. Everybody refused because he is a wicked man who committed a wicked act. If I forgive him today, supposing he chops my head off tomorrow what would happen?”

A medical doctor, Hassan Yakubu in an hospital In Adamawa state has been arrested following reports that he was among those who removed the kidney of a 24 year old patient in the hospital.
The patient, Isa Hamma is said to be a life threatening condition as he have been constantly having Lapses since the removal of his kidney.
On the cause of investigation, it was discovered that the doctor, Yakubu Hassan is an uncle to the victim.
Relating what transpired, a relative to the victim, Hamman Seyo recounted what he knows about the pathetic situation of the victim.
He said:
“the victim’s uncle, Yakubu, who treated Isa, at his Jimeta Clinic, for stomach complications, ended up operating the victim on July 8 but allegedly removed his kidney in the process. Three days after the operation, Isa could not urinate.
The complications further degenerated with the face and legs of the victim becoming swollen which prompted the family to return to the doctor who later referred them to the Federal Medical Centre in Gombe. it was at the Gombe hospital that medical officials working with the Federal Medical Center told them that Isa’s kidney had been removed.

Unable to bear a recent heartbreak, up and coming actress, Ruth Eze who has become a popular face in the Nollywood industry allegedly attempted suicide after she was jilted by her lover based in Abuja.
According to what sources told Nigeriafilms.com, Ruth Eze who was recently credited to have said in an interview that actress, Genevieve Nnaji, makes her wet, went visiting her man in Abuja only to discover that he has been having affair with her close friend and colleague in the entertainment industry.
“Ruth couldn’t stand the pain because she had thought that her lover had forgiven her after she was slammed with lesbianism scandal. To make matters worse, they had been making plans to go pay her bride price this coming Christmas and her family members have approved the marriage. The relationship is over 4 years old.
“After she saw her friend in her fiance’s arms, Ruth was stuck in her hotel room for over 24 hours. She was not picking her calls. It was later discovered that she had bought overdose of sleeping pills in attempt to take her life but for the timely intervention of another actress who had accompanied her to Abuja.
That her friend is suspected to have poisoned the mind of Ruth’s husband-to-be to abandon her. She is husband-snatcher, that is what is reigning in Nollywood now. They snatch and brainwash people’s lovers, even husbands” the source squealed.
She also added that Ruth, has been under close observation since the incidence but she has been wetting her pillows with midnight tears.
