The Libyan Football Federation, LFF has issued a statement condemning the actions of the Nigerian football team, the Super Eagles, who have currently withdrawn from playing the AFCON qualifier match against Libya which was scheduled for today, Tuesday, October 15th, 2024.
They have also threatened to take legal action following the incident, saying that it is their duty to protect the national team’s interest.
The Super Eagles had decided to boycott the match following their subpar treatment by the Libyan officials. The team had initially arrived in Libya to play the second leg of the qualifier match against the Libyan team but were left stranded for over 15+ hours without food, water, or a place to rest inside a Libyan airport.
They were finally able to leave Monday evening after the NFF sent a plane to pick them up following an outcry from Nigerians. And by leaving the country Libya, they had decided to boycott the match which was scheduled for the next day.
However, the LFF released a statement on Monday Night, October 14, accusing the NFF of failing to cooperate in organizing the match, even blaming the Nigerian Football Federation for causing the confusion that led to the current situation.
They claim that the Libyan team had also suffered from “incidents beyond control,” and had still played in the first leg, hence the Nigerian team had no excuse.

“The Libyan Football Federation condemns the measures taken by the Nigerian Football Federation by refusing to play the Libya-Nigeria match in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers scheduled for Tuesday, October 15, stressing that it will take all legal measures to preserve the interests of the Libyan national football team.”
“The Libyan Federation attaches some inhumane footage that did not prevent the Libyan mission from playing the Nigeria-Libya match last Friday in Nigeria, out of cooperation with the Confederation of African Football.
“The Libyan Football Federation clarifies that its Nigerian counterpart did not cooperate with it in any way, whether regarding the first or second leg match, noting that the events beyond our control do not equal a small part of what the Libyan national team was exposed to in the first leg match,” it said.
“The Libyan Football Federation apologises to Libyan football fans everywhere and to the parties concerned with the match arrangements due to the state of confusion caused by the Nigerian Football Federation, which led to the match not being held on time,” the statement concluded.
The Tunisian pilot who flew the chartered ValueJet plane carrying the Nigerian Super Eagles football team to Libya, reveals that it was Libyan authorities who had made him divert the aircraft.
In a video he posted online, the pilot narrated what led to the Super Eagles team getting stranded in Libya.
He explained that the original flight plan was to land in Benghazi, but when they started descent they were suddenly instructed by Libyan officials to land in another airport in Mitiga, 150 miles (300km).
Despite the pilot trying to warn them of the limited fuel reserves and the fact that they had already gotten approval from the Libyan civil authorities, they had to divert the plane.
He also revealed that even after getting to the airport, the conditions for landing were subpar, as the facilities present in the airport were not sufficient to land such a plane.
Fortunately, they could make it safely to the ground, but the ordeal that followed was just as grueling, as the Super Eagles team were stuck in the airport for over 15 hours with no food, water, or place to properly rest.

Super Eagles player, Victor Osimhen voiced his displeasure at the mistreatment and delay suffered by the Nigerian squad at the Libyan airport ahead of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers clash on Tuesday.
The Super Eagle players and officials, who traveled to Libya for the return leg of their 2025 AFCON clash, were deserted and locked at the Libya airport in discomfort without food and proper care.
Osimhen, who is not currently with the squad shared his thoughts about the team’s current ordeal via his Instagram story. He noted that the inhumane action by the Libyan government was an intentional tactic to dampen the players’ spirit of sportsmanship.
He acknowledged how terrible and psychological drain the team would be, revealing he suffered the same treatment during his U17 days.
He wrote,
“This attempt by Libyan FA is no longer just a delay, it’s an intentional tactic to weaken and ruin the morale of the players, and it’s beginning to look more like a hostage situation. The safety and well-being of my teammates and all the team staffs are the most important things right now. Our captain has said we won’t play the match and I fully support that, except if the game is taken to a neutral ground. My brothers and coaches must return home safely, we are not criminals or prisoners. I can imagine how terrible they must feel right now, as l’ve had a similar experience during my Under-17 days. This is totally unfair and heartbreaking. Again, I call on CAF, The Nigerian Government and other relevant authorities to act swiftly and ensure their safe return.”
A Nigerian man’s deliberate deed of surprising his girlfriend with a plot of land on her birthday has got people talking on social media.
The lady @arabah_official revealed in a viral clip that her partner gave her a piece of land as a birthday present.
As shown in the video, the man accompanied his girlfriend to the land while wearing a blindfold to surprise her with the gift of land.
Following their arrival, he took off the blindfold to show her the land and gave her the receipt and land documentation.

Nigeria Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekongannounced on Twitter (X) that the national team will return to Nigeria as they boycott Tuesday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya.
Recall that the Super Eagles team and their officials were stranded at the Al Abraq International Airport, Libya after their flight was diverted ahead of the African Cup of Nations qualifier in Libya.
