A man has taken to X to share the story of a 60-year-old man who got released from prison after being arrested while selling sugarcane at age 13.
According to the man the incident took place in Maiduguri, Borno State. The 13-year-old boy had taken to the streets to help sell his father’s sugarcane, when he decided to take shade under a nearby tree. But while he tiredly pushed the wheelbarrow, it mistakenly brushed the frunk of a parked car and it headlamp fell off. He looked around for whom could possibly be the owner but didn’t see. Out of righteousness, he stood there in wait for the owner, who happened to be praying at a nearby mosque.
The man finished praying and finally came. Witnessing the damage the boy had done to his car, he called the police and ordered that the boy be locked up in prison. He spent 47 years imprisonment and was only released at age 60 after a state governor granted him a pardon. The man who shared the story on X expressed how heartbroken he was realizing that the man was being transferred from one prison to the other across Nigeria for 47 years. “May Nigeria never happen to you”, he concluded.
The story had rattled reactions from X users who asked for the whereabout of the man that owned the car; critiquing the most religious people to be the most dangerous. While others hoped that such wickedness was just a tale, some questioned the whereabout of the man’s parents when the incident took place.
