Nigerian singer, Brymo has stirred reactions online with his opinion about his colleague Burnaboy and his controversial statement about afrobeat.

Recall that Burna Boy stated in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that most Afrobeat musicians lack life experiences, which renders their music empty.

Speaking in a recent interview with TVC News, Brymo criticized Burnaboy for attempting to create another subgenre of Afrobeat based off the hard work of Fela Kuti.

According to him, Afrobeat was not just a genre but a style of music, and it was disrespectful to try to modify it and label others as number one in a field that didn’t belong to them

He said,

“I saw a video where he said he was the Jesus of Afrobeat and he put Davido and Wizkid on some other mountain like that.

I think he is sleazy, he is cheap, he is a thief, very unoriginal, very fake. Every song is a sample or a stolen slogan. Who does that?

Afrobeat is a music style, not a genre. Fela started the genre and it is disrespectful that a new generation of musicians came and just added ‘S’ to create another center of number one.

I think its a very big problem that we have, even in black American music. First it was hip-hop, then it became rap, then it became trap. We just show up and try to remake what our older brother did; there should be continuity.”
