A young lady has taken to social media to reminisce about how pride made her come third in secondary school.
The lady recounted that she was perceived to be very smart as a child, and that when she was to transition to primary one, her mother took her to a new school. Although the teachers there doubted her capabilities because she didn’t go through pre-nursery, her mother insisted they let her write the exams. To the teachers’ surprise, she scored higher than the other students.
For the longest time, she always topped her class; her father would always come to the school with a photographer because he knew his daughter would be awarded at the end of the session.
Fast forward to JSS1, she came first as usual. But then, after realizing there was another student in JSS1B who also took first, she felt pricked. She met him and bragged about becoming the overall best student. To her surprise the boy became the overall best and there began her father’s disappointment in her.
She would later skip JSS3 for SS1, and would wind up as third overall. Her father got anxious and wondered if it was a mistake to let her skip JSS3. Recounting how he scolded her made her realize that she had allowed pride get to her; she stopped studying as she should and she met students who were putting in the work. She concluded with an advise against having an arrival mentality in life. “let he that thinks he stands take heed lest he falls”, she added.
