A 30-year-old India based Nigerian man has died after was reportedly held captive and starved for eight months by his landlord.

It was gathered that the victim identified as Michael Emenike Madueke, couldn’t pay his rent during the pandemic, and his landlord evicted him and locked him up without food in another apartment.

Madueke was found bedridden and malnourished by police in the apartment located at Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad. Unfortunately he lost his life on the way to the hospital.

A Facebook page, @Un-Fair Web who shared the story on the platform wrote,

“Michael Emenike Madueke (30 years) a Nigerian citizen was (allegedly)locked up by his landlord due to non-payment of 6 months rent during the pandemic in Raj Nagar extension, Ghaziabad. He was evicted from his rental apartment and held against his rights and wishes for close to 8 months in another apartment (SG Impressions) by the landlord. Here, he was regularly beaten up and kept without food and only water. When his brother in Nigeria transferred Rs. 42000.00 to the landlord (Mr. Omveer Rahul) his state of incarceration and treatment was discovered.

During his transport to the hospital on being rescued (between Apex hospital and AIIMS) he succumbed to the ill-treatment and died. An FIR is yet to be filed by the police at the station”.

Meanwhile, a Nigerian activist, Kennedy alleged that the deceased, an auto parts dealer died from abuse and starvation after he was held against his wishes for about 8 months in the apartment by his India landlord.

In videos of Emenike’s rescue that was recorded by Nigerian Citizens Welfare Association, a group of expats headed by Kennedy, the victim who already looked extremely lean and pale is heard saying “He wants more money everyday.”

Kennedy said Michael’s family in Nigeria had sent Rs 42,000 in two instalments to Rahul. It is not clear how much Michael owed Rahul.

“We have not filed a formal police complaint yet as we are waiting for what his family and the Nigerian High Commission tell us,” He added.

However, the police said they had not yet found evidence to back up the charge. No external injuries were found by a doctor who first attended to him.

The report from the emergency department of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences recorded “MICHEAL” (sic) a 30 years old male, ‘BROUGHT DEAD, PENDING INVESTIGATION” at 8.08 pm.
