A twenty-year-old man identified as Musa Anifowose, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment by an Ogun State Magistrate for raping an eight-year-old girl.
According to the prosecutor, Bukola Abolade, Musa committed the crime on May 1st, 2020, around 9am at Number 6 Agbaje street in Sabo, Ijebu Ode in the state.
The prosecutor told the court that Musa raped the minor when her mother sent her on an errand. The victim’s mother observed bloodstains on her daughter’s legs, cloth and private parts when she returned. On inquiry, the victim said it was Musa who violated her. She said he took her to an abandoned building close to an Abattoir where he violated her.
“When the victim got home, her mother noticed blood stains on her clothe. Upon enquiry, she told her mother what happened between her and the defendant,” the prosecutor said
Medical examination proved that the victim had been penetrated. The suspect when cross-examined, confessed to committing the crime.
The presiding magistrate, Olusegun Abiodun, thereafter sentenced him to two years’ imprisonment at the Oba Correctional Centre without an option of fine.
A mother-of-two, Takieyah Reaves, from Newark, New Jersey, now lives with her intestines hanging out of her abdomen after surviving a horrific nightclub shooting.
Reaves, 32, defied death in July 2017 to survive being shot twice on her stomach and right leg by a random attacker who sprayed bullets at a crowd of night clubbers, injuring three people.
One of the bullets tore her stomach wide open, and it was a miracle that she survived after undergoing intensive surgery to repair her damaged intestines.
After doctors stitched her up, the size of the wound on her stomach made it impossible to close, forcing her to live with a gaping hole on her torso and with the inside of her intestines fully exposed.
Her scar looks so big that some people even mistake it for a pregnancy.
Takieyah was nursed by her mother Tammi Reaves-Duncan as she recovered, she even entered into depression due to her “deformity.”
Takieyah, a criminal justice student, said to Metro UK: ‘It will get patched up properly, but it has been left open and exposed ever since it happened. It bulges and I am constantly asked if I am pregnant when I go out. People ask me if it’s a boy or a girl and I then have to explain everything.’ Takieyah lost 4.5 liters of blood and defied death to survive the shooting.
Takieyah continued: ‘I wasn’t supposed to make it out of hospital alive, my family were told to say their goodbyes. I am so grateful to still be here and be given a second chance at life, but I can’t help feeling depressed by how I looked.”
‘I kept my stomach hidden from everyone for a long time, even from my kids. I was so depressed by my body, I had scars all over and I hated it. ‘I just wanted to curl up in a ball and hide and I was scared to go outside because of guns on the street.
” I also didn’t want anyone to see my body so I found it hard to live my life as normal.”
Doctors created a makeshift lining for Takieyah’s stomach by using skin from her leg.
‘It has changed my life but I am so grateful I am still able to raise my kids. I was depressed for a while but I decided that I couldn’t go on like that for their sake. ‘I do want my body back but I see them as my war scars. People tell me how beautiful I am and I have learned to embrace what happened.’
After three years of living with an open wound, Takieyah is due to have her stomach stitched back together for good, at the end of June this year.
Takieyah speaking about the day she was shot: ‘I thought I was dying and I was so scared about leaving my kids without a mom. It was super scary and really painful, it felt like fire was running through my veins. ‘I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, the guy was firing off gunshots and I was stood in the doorway. I didn’t even realize I had been shot at first, but then I collapsed.
‘I was in the doorstep of the club when I got shot. I remember feeling very tired, like I wanted to go to sleep. My friend Lavona kept telling me to keep my eyes open and listen to the voices.’ ‘I lost 4.5 liters of blood and my doctors told me my heart stopped on the operating table, but I came back. I had surgery to remove the bullets but they had to leave my stomach open like this”

In the latest update of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, 681 new cases have been reported as of Thursday evening, June 11th by the National Centre for Disease Control.
In a new update on their Twitter page, the NCDC reports that there’s new cases in Lagos, Rivers, Ogun, Gombe, Oyo, Imo, Delta, Kano, Bauchi, Edo, Katsina, Kaduna, Anambra, Jigawa, Kebbi, Ondo and Nasarawa.

Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has in a new disclosure said that an estimate of 39.4 million Nigerians might be out of job by the end of 2020 according to projections received by the economic sustainability committee.
The VP who disclosed this while presenting the committee’s report to President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday June 11, said the National Bureau of Statistics also projects that the country would have a revenue shortfall of N185 billion monthly with oil prices at $30 a barrel.
The Vice President stated the projection might come to reality if government does not take prompt measures. He stated that the committee has been given the responsibility of developing a credible sustainability plan for repositioning the Nigerian economy pre and post COVID-19 crisis period.
Osinbajo said;
“Several projections, including those done by the NBS on behalf of the economic sustainability committee, showed a severe downturn in our oil earnings, as a result of which, even with oil price at $30 a barrel, we would still have a shortfall of about N185 billion every month, in the amount available for allocation to the three tiers of government.
“That unemployment may rise to 33.6 percent or about 39.4 million people by the end of 2020 if we fail to take prompt preemptive measures; that millions more will fall extreme poverty before the pandemic ends; that GDP may fall to between minus 4.40% and minus 8.91%, depending on the length of the lockdown period and strength of our economic response.
“We have therefore recommended that we must carry out mass programmes that create jobs and utilise local materials. Such will include a mass agricultural programme, which is expected to bring between 20,000 and 100,000 hectares of new farmland under cultivation in every state of the federation and create millions of direct and indirect job opportunities.
“Extensive public works and road construction programme focusing on both major and rural roads and using locally available materials like limestone, cement and granite.
“Mass housing programme to deliver up to 300,000 homes annually, engaging young professionals and artisans who form themselves into small and medium scale businesses within the construction industry, using indigenous labour and materials.
“Installation of solar home system, targeting five million households, serving about 25 million individual Nigerians who are currently not connected to the national grid.
“The provision of ample support for the informal sector through low-interest loans and by easing procedures for registration, licensing, obtaining permits, etc.”
It was also gathered that the committee recommended that ministers be responsible for implementation of plans situated in their respective Ministries.
On his own part, President Buhari commended the committee for completing their assignment in good time. He added that more efforts would be geared towards making life better for citizens.
He said;
“This has been a trying time for those in the informal sector, which constitutes a large part of our economy, important family celebrations were held without the presence of loved ones, schools are closed and parents have had to resort to homeschooling in addition to juggling other responsibilities.
“Despite all these, Nigerians have done their best and persevered. I must salute Nigerians for their resilience in adapting to the realities of the COVID-19 effect while also recognising the superhuman effort of our frontline health workers.”
Father of renowned Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Professor James Nwoye Adichie, has reportedly passed away.
Late Professor Adichie kicked the bucket on Wednesday night, June 10. Before his demise, he was admitted into the Chira Memorial Hospital in Awkuzu, Oyi local government area of Anambra State.
The Emeritus Professor of Statistics and Mathematics at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) celebrated his 88th birthday on March 1.
He was the first Nigerian Professor of Statistics. He became a Professor of Statistics in 1976. He is survived by his wife and children.

The police in Kano State has arrested a man identified as Muhammad Alfa, 32, for allegedly raping over 40 women in the past one year in the state.
DSP Abdullahi Haruna, the command’s Spokesperson, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Wednesday in Kano.
According to Haruna, the suspect was arrested on June 10 at about 2 am when he sneaked into a home at Kwanan Dangora Town in Kano, with intent to commit the heinous crime.
The DSP added that during investigation the suspect admitted raping over 40 women in the past one year, adding that some of the victims included children and an 80-year-old woman.
The Commissioner of police, Habu Ahmad, had ordered the suspect to be transferred to the State Criminal Intelligence Department for investigation after which he will be charged to court.
A Popular hair vendor on social media identified as Anna of Annishair, has died.
According to reports, Anna died a few days ago from a brief illness.
The cause of her death is officially not yet known but her friends who took to social media to mourn her passing, claimed she was poisoned.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s government says Nigerians now get 18 to 24 hours of electricity daily. Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, said this in an interview with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on Tuesday.
He stated that the Buhari administration had improved the power sector. The minister said the federal government had upgraded the 330KVA, the highest voltage in the country.
He confirmed that 132 substations have been improved and the 40MW Kashimbilla station has been completed. Mamman added that work on Zungeru station in Niger has reached 70 percent.
For Mambilla, the minister said the feasibility studies have been concluded and that contractors will soon begin construction.
“We have improved our services. Before this government, they gave light for less than 10 hours a day, but today I can tell you that we give light from 18 to 24 hours in a day.”
The minister said before now, Nigeria had less than 3,000mw of capacity generation.
“But today, we can generate up to 5,500mw capacity, although we cannot transmit all due to some constraints.”
Mamman assured that power supply would further improve after Siemens AG of Germany begins work in the sector.
Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen, has attributed the spike in the number of rape cases to the lockdown.
Tallen said this to state house correspondents on Wednesday, June 10 after the Federal Executive Council meeting where she brought up the rape pandemic in the country.
She disclosed that an action plan which would involve the judiciary and the media, is being put in place to tackle the rape menace.
“There has been an outcry against rape epidemic because of the lockdown. I know we have always had rape in this country but with the lockdown of people in homes because of COVID-19, women and children are locked down with their abusers. The number has escalated three times of what we had seen. There is no state with an exception. The number has reached alarming rate.
We are calling for legal intervention. From details that we have, there are hundreds of cases that are within our courts that have not been addressed and out of each one case, be sure that there are 10 that have not been reported.
Because of this, we call for media campaign and aggressive public enlightenment. We want people to rise and speak up against abuse of minors and rape cases. We also call for intervention of the judiciary for prompt dispensation of justice and police to ensure that rape cases are not treated with levity or wished away when reported.
These were the issues brought before council, and I am glad to announce that we got a full support of Mr. President and all members of council that government will take decisive action at the highest level to protect women and children in this country” she said
