A carer has been jailed for abusing an elderly and frail woman with dementia in her home in Birmingham.
The abuse was captured on a secret camera installed by the woman’s family – her family became concerned after they saw bruising on her body and her grandson heard her screaming in her bedroom. He set up a secret camera to get to the bottom of what was happening.
The footage, shot in early August last year, showed several forms of abuse meted out on the woman by the carer named Ashikiah Reid, 36. It shows Reid slapping the victim’s hand away and leaning on her ribs, causing her to cry out.
As soon as her bosses were shown the footage, Reid was dismissed. She has now been given an eight-month prison sentence for her abuse.
Prosecutor Alison Scott Jones said,
“The family certainly did not anticipate what we are about to see. The handling lacks compassion. There is no communication with the patient about what is going on. It is very sterile and rough.
Miss Scott Jones said the victim was now scared of any new carers.
She added,
“This is a vulnerable old lady who appears to be terrified of the very people paid to look after her.”
She said it was also upsetting for the family to discover this had been going on while they were in the house. In a statement the victim’s daughter in law said what happened had taken the safety and happiness away from her.
Judge Mark Wall QC said,
“The video I have watched reveals that you were handling her without assistance which was contrary to the care plan.
“While you were doing that you were very rough with her on occasions. You have slapped her hands and have lent on her in a way that has caused her obvious distress. She was at times shouting out in protest. You have left her without a sense of security she ought to feel in her own home.
“This was an old lady of extreme vulnerability in addition to her age.”
A hospital in Kenya has finally confirmed that two Kakamega girls, Sharon Mathias and Melon Lutenyo, are identical twins. While browsing, Sharon had come across Melon and sent her a ‘friend request’.
No sooner had she ‘accepted’, the request, the two started engaging in a war of words over the authenticity of the other’s online profile. They were both suspicious of their striking resemblance but after the online altercation they chose to cut off their communication. The two finally met in December 2018 at a bus stop in Kakamega town.
This was prompted by constant mention by their teachers and schoolmates about their resemblance. Soon, their communication became frequent to the extent that they introduced each other to their parents.
In April 2019, both families resorted to solve the mystery by seeking professional help. Lancet Kenya then offered to carry out a DNA test at subsidised cost. The result eventually confirmed that they are twins.
Their mother, Ms Onyango, is said to have gone to Kakamega Hospital while pregnant on August 15, 1999. She expected to deliver triplets but when she regained consciousness after delivery through a caesarean section, she was informed that she had given birth to twins.
The twins were placed in an incubator for a week due to low birth weight. She said that she had been in doubt since her twin daughters Melon and Melvin did not turn out identical.
Also Ms Omina, who has just been confirmed not to be Sharon’s biological mother, said that she gave birth on August 14, 1999, just a day before Ms Onyango had her delivery.
However, the Director of Criminal Investigations office will still pursue the case of the identical twins switched at birth, even after the family said they will not press charges against the hospital.
In the mix up, Mevies Imbaya was given to Onyango as a fraternal twin to Melon, but it has now been confirmed that she is the biological daughter of Omina, who brought up Sharon.

THREE secondary school teachers arrested recently for allegedly aiding and abating malpractices in West African Examinations Council,WAEC,in three states in the South, were on Thursday paraded by the police in Abuja.
The teachers, who were paraded before newsmen at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, however, feigned ignorant of their offence,as according them, they merely snapped questions of examinations already written by students with their phones, saying they didn’t know such act constituted an offence.
According to them, their actions were merely to later go through the questions and provide their answers for the WAEC candidates in the schools they are teaching so they can know questions not correctly answered in the examination.
The teachers who identified themselves as Godstime Onuoha, Uche Chukwuma and Ibuokanma Darlington, all staff of some secondary schools in I’m, Anambra and Rivers State, respectively, according to the Force Headqarters’ image maker, Frank Mba, were allegedly caught while in possession of WAEC questions papers.
Mbah, explained that the questions were careful concealed on their mobile phones where they leaked to students through WhatsApp group platforms they established for the students, prior to any subjects they were to write. The teachers, he explained, took advantage of the role designated to them as supervisors in some examination centres to indulge in the acts.
He disclosed that their arrests were effected by the police detectives from the Cybercrime unit with active collaboration by officials of the examination’s body. According to him,the examination malpractice suspects will be charged to court for diligent prosecution whenever investigations on their matters were completed.
“I belong to the WhatsApp group of some of my students. I didn’t open the WhatsApp platform, they did and included my name in the platform as their teacher,” one of them told reporters. and the question paper on my phone was actually the one the students wrote the previous day which I usually teach them and know where they did well or not.
Speaking also during the parade of the suspects, Yusuf Ari, Director of WAEC in charge of Administration, regretted that the body had what he called ite “biggest challenge.” According to him, several innovations were being emplaced with a view to making malpractices difficult in examinations. “We have developed a mechanism to detect leaked question papers sent to social media platforms and arrest those who are the main actors,”he disclosed at the event.
Over the past couple of years, the Indonesian province of South Sulawesi has been in the news with alarming frequency for viral stories of children getting married, either among themselves or with much older adults.
According to reports, a 41-year-old widower named Rustam Ashary last week married a 13-year-old girl, who has been identified by her initials SW, both of whom are from the Sidrap regency of South Sulawesi.
Rustam met SW on Facebook, and the pair reportedly communicated via the social media platform for three months before deciding to marry.
“We the families gave our blessings to their relationship,” SW’s mother, Nurhayati, told Detik after her child’s marriage, insisting that her daughter was never pressured into marrying Rustam and that they are now happy together.
“She’s still in Grade 1 at an MTs (religious middle school, equivalent to grade 7),” Nurhayati added when asked about her daughter’s schooling.
Photos from Rustam and SW’s wedding day have circulated online, some showing them holding up their marriage certificate, confirming that the union is legally recognized.
The South Sulawesi provincial government say they had no legal jurisdiction to prevent Rustam and SW’s marriage, but now that it has happened they are focusing on ensuring that SW still receives her rights as a child.
“We want to ensure she gets her rights such as to a full education,” South Sulawesi Child Protection Services Head Nur Anti told Detik .
Nur added that the government has urged SW to delay her pregnancy until after she finishes formal schooling, but the reality is that it would be difficult for them to intervene in Rustam and SW’s private lives, whereas, if they weren’t legally married, the 13-year-old would be considered a victim of statutory rape.
The current legal age of marriage in Indonesia is 19 years old for men and 16 years old for women. However, the country’s 1974 Law on Marriage also includes a major loophole to this requirement which allows marriages to still be considered legal if they are done “in accordance” with religious belief, known as nikah siri.
As such, underage marriages that have been sanctified by religious courts or officials must still be officially recognized by the government — if not, many are satisfied with merely fulfilling religious or traditional requirements for marriage.

A Nigerian Lady has made an odd request to God, and this has cracked people up on social media. She made the ‘funny request’ to God in a post that was shared by popular Nigerian relationship expert, Joro Olomofin.
In an era where cheating abounds, it’s often believed that men who are broke find it hard to cheat because obviously it takes a heavy pocket to get a woman dancing to their groove.
As a result, this lady whose identity was not revealed by Joro believes that if her man is poverty-stricken, she won’t think of jumping from one woman to the other because most men cheat because they have the money.
“God please let my husband be so broke so he won’t have money to cheat and he will love me and cherish me. Let me be the head of the family in terms of money. When he is broke side chick won’t want him. I pray this for myself and all ladies reading this in Jesus name Amen. We ladies deserve peace. This is the only solution. Take a man’s money away he will be a loyal husband. Every lady reading this. I wish this for you all. Happiness. Amen.”

The 32-year-old woman, who stole a three-day-old baby in Plateau Specialist Hospital, Jos said she was driven into committing the crime by desire to have a child, who would call her mother after seven years of marriage.
Mrs. Leritshimwa Diyal, a student of College of Health Technology, Zawan, in Plateau, made the confession while speaking with newsmen when she was paraded by the Plateau Police Command on Thursday in Jos.
Recall that the baby belonging to one Mrs. Mary Chukwuebuka was stolen three days after birth at the Plateau Specialist Hospital. The baby has since been handed over to the biological parents.
Diyal, before her arrest, had claimed that she gave birth at a kidnappers’ den. She also claimed that she registered for antenatal care at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).
“I have been married for over seven years without a child; the desire to have one pushed me into stealing another woman’s child. My husband and I have sought for medical attention to ascertain the reason for our childlessness, but to no avail. I have contacted many orphanages to adopt a child, but none granted me the opportunity, that is why I resorted to stealing. I regret this desperation. I wasn’t thinking straight when I stole the baby. I plead that justice be tempered with mercy,” she pleaded.
Diyal also told journalists that she carried out the act without the knowledge of her husband.
Briefing newsmen, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Isaac Akinmoyede, attributed the timely arrest of Diyal to the “painstaking and diligent investigation” by his officers and men.
He explained that Diyal perfected her plans and leveraged on her deep knowledge of the terrain of the hospital, where she once undertook her industrial attachment, to steal the baby.
Akinmoyede said that she had faked her kidnap story thinking it would give her a strong alibi to have the baby, but that when she was confronted with realities, she confessed to stealing the baby.
“Currently, the command is investigating her claim that she committed the crime alone,” Akinmoyede said, stressing that the case would be charged to court immediately the investigation was concluded.
