Nigerians react as new IGP Mohammed disbands FSARS

Nigerians on social media have kicked against the decentralization of operations of the newly disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit by the Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu.

Mohammed on Monday ordered the decentralization of SARS, which before the current development, was centralized at the Force Headquarters.

The new development has since stirred reactions online from Nigerians.

Here are some comments gathered by Daily Post from Twitter:

@Segalink “Unfortunately for those celebrating, EndSARS just got reborn with this chaotic pronouncement. We are back to where it all started. All torture chambers will no doubt be recommissioned with the reinstatement of SARS, SAKS & SACS impunity under commissioners.”

@OsasCruz “The Acting IG of police just returned FSARS back to the era it was before the EndSARS campaign placing them under the control of States Police Commissioners. This is Bad News!!

@Akanaenu “We said End SARS not disband or rebrand, shut that thug recruiting unit for good. Here is an idea, start another unit (Robbery/homocide) with trained and qualified detectives in charge. Notice I didn’t say HIGHLY trained.. that’s like asking Santa for a unicorn.”

@Chydee “So SARS is now back to being SARS, not FSARS anymore. SARS is no longer under the IG’s office, the commissioners of police now control them. Basically back to what it was before the EndSARS campaign. One step forward, two steps backward. Nigeria.”

@BlessingAkpabi1 “Whar exactly does the new IGP want to achieve by bringing SARS back to the state?

@Kiwala139 “If the IG of police returns FSARS to a proper anti robbery squad its fyn. But how sure are we they won’t be hunting and killing innocent people again.“

@Citizengarvel “Dear IGP , it took Nigerians and mostly youths a lot of will power, countless human rights infringements and extra judicial killings to finally EndSARS. Bringing SARS back to life is a total disregard for the lives lost and persons brutalized.”

@Lordsurh “I see this move by the IG as a political one planned towards the upcoming election. They want to use SARS to torment us. Seems these few months of peace, they don’t like it.”

@YemieFash “The report of the disbandment of FSARS by the new IG of @PoliceNG is not a good development, what this means is that SARS has now been drafted back to take orders from State Police Commissioners. They have taken us back to were we started from.”

@Abdulmahmud “EndSARS struggles has just begun with the return of operational commands of SARS everywhere to states Compols.”

I’m Regina Daniels. Proud to be 100% Atikulated with Atiku Abubakar who is in the race to become Nigeria’s next President. I accept my appointment as Youth Campaign Coordinator For Nollywood with humility and youthful zeal. Atiku is a youth-friendly leader who has assured that every 4 out of 10 of his cabinet will be a youth. It can’t sure get any better.

The incumbent called President “Bubu” is a myriad of lies, inuendos, deceit, incompetence, tyranny, inability, inadequacies, glaring misfit and the downright collapse of the basic structure of the Nigerian society.

The drift is brazen. The nation is at crossroads. The land bleeds from hunger and inertia. It’s time to steer the ship away from caput. From Bama to Bori, Aba to Abuja, kaura Namode to Kaduna, the sky is gloomy.
Time for Nigerian Youths to join me and vote Atiku/Obi 2019 to protect our future.

ASUU strike continues as lecturers meeting with FG ends with no agreement

ASUU rejects FG offer

Another meeting between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) ended on Monday night without an immediate resolution of the ongoing strike.

The meeting which held at the Federal Ministry of Labour headquarters was to find a lasting solution to the ongoing strike by the university lecturers.

At least six other meetings have been held between both parties before Monday’s since the strike commenced on November 4.

While addressing journalists at the end of the meeting which lasted about four hours, the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, said the meeting will reconvene at the instance of the union.

When asked if the union asked the government to commit N50 billion naira to revitalization of public universities, Mr Ngige said the aggregate amount involved is beyond N50 billion.

He said government has released N163 billion from Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund) to satisfy some of the demands of ASUU.

”Today we have agreed to fund revitalisation. Government has released from TETFUND account about N163 billion. The meeting will reconvene at the instance of ASUU. FG is not weak in the negotiation. The strike is not slipping out of our hands,” he said.

”We did not take a long time than we anticipated. We have other commitments but the important thing is that we have made substantial progress. We have reached some agreements in seven areas,” he said.

According to Mr Ngige, most of the issues have been resolved but ASUU will need to consult its members and come with what they think.

”If you aggregate the total amount of money involved, it is beyond N50 billion. We are paying in several compartments and these are debt from 2009 to 2012. We have started defraying the earned allowances there and released N15.4 billion for shortfall in the payment of salaries,” he said.

Meanwhile, the national president of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, said the meeting ended with grey areas to be resolved.

”We have not suspended the strike, discussion will continue at a later date. We are going back to our members for further consultation,” he said.

Mr Ogunyemi said before the strike can be suspended, the government must address the issue of revitalisation.

”Revitilisation is central to our academic work. Unless that area is addressed, our members will still have issues. We are not demanding for N50 billion, we are saying that the minimum that FG can release to reactivate revitalisation fund is N50 billion,” he said.

The union embarked on the strike on November 4 over the poor funding of Nigerian universities and non-implementation of previous agreements by the government.

20-year-old man commits suicide after losing his iPhone at a party

A vlogger hanged himself after he was found “sobbing uncontrollably” because he misplaced his iPhone at an Arctic Monkeys party last year, an inquest heard.

Archie Day, 20, of Bishop Stortford, Herts in England, took his own life on October 5 at Peel Park halls of residence at Salford University in Greater Manchester.

A coroner said the undergraduate was “extremely upset” about losing his phone before he hanged himself. His family believe he did not intend to kill himself – blaming excessive drinking at the club night for contributing to him ”not thinking rationally.”

Archie, a keen Instagram vlogger and broadcast journalism student, had a history of depression and anxiety but told his family it had become less of an issue, an inquest heard.

In a statement, his flatmate Kane Markham said Archie’s friends were aware of his mental health battles but didn’t realise the severity. His Instagram page featured a post that read “Should have died already” and he listened to songs about depression, claimed Kane.

Kane said Archie had drunk “at least four drinks of Stella” that night, as well as sipping other people’s drinks. A 2.30am he messaged his friends asking where they were and they jokingly told him they had returned home.

When the group got into a cab they couldn’t find Archie and later found him “sobbing uncontrollably” in his digs with a security guard. When Kane returned from lectures that day Archie’s door was still locked and he left his friend alone.

The phone was later found 220 miles away in Romford, Essex, but it was never recovered.

Tests showed Archie had 225 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood in his system, more than twice the legal limit.

Davido’s “Fall” takes over radio stations in the US

davidos fall

Reports by “Rolling Stone” reveal that Davido’s song, Fall is taking over radio stations in the United States of America.

The American monthly magazine that focuses on popular culture described the song as one of the biggest to ever come out of Africa.

Check out the full report here;

The Nigerian style of music known as Afrobeats has quietly entranced a large swathe of the world’s population. “Pretty much every song on pop radio [in the U.K. now] is sort of a Mr. Eazi-style, chill, afrobeats [track],” the producer Riton told Rolling Stone last year. But Nigerian singers have not yet established a foothold Stateside, despite well-received, afrobeats-dusted singles from established stars like Drake and Janet Jackson.

So it’s unusual that “Fall,” a springy, 19-month-old track from the Nigerian singer DaVido, is currently gaining traction on the airwaves. The growth has been gradual: 482 plays to date, spread across 36 stations, according to Nielsen BDS, which tracks radio activity. BDS reports that four new stations added “Fall” into rotation last week.

Those are admittedly not huge numbers — for comparison’s sake, Post Malone’s new single “Wow” grew by 1,700 plays last week alone. But listeners who hear “Fall” are scrambling to find their phones: It was one of the Top 100 most Shazam’d singles in America this week. In New York City, “Fall” was a Top 10 record on Shazam. And in Atlanta, another crucial market, only two tracks were getting more Shazam activity than DaVido’s.

Eliciting that level of interest in America is no small feat for an African singer. Columbia signed “Pana,” a 2016 single from Tekno, but wasn’t able to transform it into a U.S. hit. RCA signed Wizkid, the guest on Drake’s “One Dance,” but hasn’t been able to get a hit either. (RCA is also working with DaVido now.) Burna Boy, another Nigerian singer with impressive talent, is now affiliated with Atlantic, but his “Rock Your Body” didn’t reach a wide audience in America.

That has nothing to do with the music — “Pana” and “Rock Your Body” are both indelible polyrhythmic pop songs, wonderfully weightless next to the lead-footed trap that currently dominates both rap and pop radio in America.

But the machinery that creates hits in the U.S. remains conservative, even in the supposedly “new” era brought on by streaming.

Nowhere is this more true than at radio, which throws its still-considerable weight behind only a tiny number of tracks — “A Top 40 radio station is playing five songs 120 times a week every week,” according to one radio insider — and rarely takes risks on music that doesn’t align with seemingly-ancient-if-not-totally-incomprehensible norms.

Mainstream “urban” radio usually won’t play Latin trap next to American trap, even if the same producers worked on both tracks, or pivot from hard hip-hop into soft R&B. Meanwhile, pop radio tries hard to ignore viral rap records, which programmers characterize as “pretty extreme,” in favor of bizarre but ostensibly more palatable concoctions by Panic! at the Disco or Marshmello.

Even some Top 40 programmers are confused by this tendency: “I don’t know when everybody’s gonna get it through their heads that we can’t just keep forcing these pop songs that nobody likes down everybody’s throat,” Nathan Graham told Rolling Stone last year.

Radio also depends on a favor system of sorts: Artists play station concerts, stop by for interviews and record drops to help get their music onto the air.

This is costly for artists without American passports. “To work the U.S. is big money — even getting music onto radio in New York alone might cost you upwards of $100 or $200 grand,” the Nigerian star Mr. Eazi explained to Rolling Stone last year. That’s another reason why, “at the end of the day, nobody has properly broken an African act in the U.S.”

It’s too early to tell if DaVido can establish a new path from Nigeria to the American airwaves — his team only recently started “attacking US radio properly,” according to an email from the singer’s manager, Asa Asika.

But there’s no denying that when listeners hear DaVido’s music, they are immediately compelled to figure out who sings it.

And that’s not just the case with “Fall.” This week New Yorkers were also trying to determine who steals the show on local rapper Casanova’s new single “2am” (Shazaming Top 25). Surprise — it’s DaVido. He is also the artist behind the 2017 track “If,” which is Shazaming Top 50 in New York.

DaVido’s success appears to be a boon for other Nigerian artists as well.

Afro B’s “Drogba (Joanna)” was even higher than “Fall” on New York Shazam this week. If more radio programmers are willing to give these artists a chance, they may be pleasantly surprised by the results.

Reacting to this, Davido took to his Instagram page to appreciate Rollingstone in a post that read;

“Thank you @rollingstone ❤️ ??”
