President Museveni of Uganda came under fire, on Monday, for saying he had not stepped into the kitchen since he got married, and that it was not a man’s role to cook.
“The head of the home never goes into the kitchen. It is now 45 years with Mama Janet, I have never stepped into the kitchen.
That is how it should be,” he said on Sunday in a statement, as an example of how politicians and civil servants should stick to proscribed roles.
Oxfam’s International Executive Director, Winnie Byanyima, hit back at the 74-year-old president on Twitter, saying she was “disappointed”.
“Cooking isn’t a woman’s job. It’s a life skill. All people – men and women should cook,” she wrote.
“When cooking, cleaning and doing other domestic chores are left to women, they are denied an equal chance to raise incomes or to be politically active.”
Ms Alice Alaso, a top mobiliser for The New Formation political pressure group said: “Museveni has revealed to the world what he has always believed in: that women can never be the same as their male counterparts.”
A section of online publications however, defended Mr Museveni’s comments as consistent with the country’s culture which sees men cooking as “taboo”, saying some ethnic groups in the country have a word referring to men who cook as a “transvestite or a man dressing and behaving like a woman.”
Nigerian singer, Olawale Ashimi, popularly known as Brymo has said musicians who “suddenly” leave their craft for politics are “thieves”.
The singer stated this in an interview with Sahara TV at the recently concluded 2018 Ake Books and Arts Festival. According to Brymo, musicians have many issues to address within the entertainment industry, and should focus on that, rather than “suddenly dumping music for politics”.
His words: “I think it is a very difficult move in the sense that there are years invested in every industry. So, you’ve been a musician for 10 to 15 years, and suddenly you dump that to go and become a politician and run for office. You’re just a thief, because there are issues in the entertainment industry you can take part in to fix. Why do you have to run for public office? There are things you can do as a musician in your own music industry and make things better there. If you cannot make things better there, how are you going to make things better in public office?
“I believe everybody should stay in their lane. Let musicians be musicians and let politicians be politicians; let everybody do their job. I have invested 15 years in music and I have no intention to throw all that away for another career. This is my career; this Brymo. I feel everybody should treat their music that way and leave politics alone for politicians.”
Brymo, who recently released his debut novel entitled ‘Oriri’s Plight’, eulogised the late Afrobeats maestro, Fela Anikulapo Kuti as the greatest musician whose music was not appreciated until he died.
“A lot of our parents were like ‘don’t listen to Fela’s music’. The government says ‘don’t go to Kalakuta Republic’. Everyone was against him and now everybody says he is the greatest. Same thing applies to us; you can not quantify what we are doing right now until when it is done. When the next generation gets here, then they will say these people did something that was amazing. Right now, the story is being told.
“I don’t think there is any need for comparison, because we have had more of the most skillful Nigerians now than then. There are a lot of amazing, talented people, but have we been able to show, to come out, to be bold like they were? Not so much. However, skill-wise, I think we’ve been able to match the last generation. But we need to show more buzz; we need to take the initiative and be musicians,” he said.

The trial of a Nollywood producer, Seun Egbegbe resumed yesterday Nov 5th but it was stalled as the trial judge insisted that the case could not go on except the prosecutor, Innocent Anyigor, pays a fine of N50,000 imposed on him during the previous proceedings.
Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo, sitting at the Federal High Court in Lagos, rejected the plea by the police prosecutor that the N50,000 be waived. The judge rebuked the prosecutor for the slow pace at which the case had proceeded since Egbegbe and his co-defendants were arraigned in February last year.
The judge during the previous hearing awarded N50,000 cost against Anyigor after the defence counsel raised objection to the competence of a police officer, Godwin Omaka, to testify in the case.
In view of the judge’s refusal to waive the fine, the prosecutor pleaded to be given two weeks to raise the money. But Justice Oguntoyinbo said she could not grant any adjournment longer than seven days, noting that the case had already dragged.
She subsequently adjourned the case till November 7, 2018, directing the prosecutor to ensure that the fine was paid.
Egbegbe and four others ar\e charged with alleged serial frauds involving N39,098,100, $90,000 and £12,550. They were accused of fraudulently obtaining the money from no fewer than 40 Bureau De Change operators in Lagos over a period of two years 2015 to 2017.
Egbegbe and his co-defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the 40 counts pressed against them. Those standing trial alongside Egbegbe are Oyekan Ayomide, Lawal Kareem, Olalekan Yusuf and Muyideen Shoyombo.

Victoria’s Secret has unveiled their annual “Dream Angels Fantasy Bra” and its shining Swarovski crystals which has a hefty price tag of $1 million.
“Angel” Elsa Hosk will don the $1 million undergarment on Thursday during the 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, the lingerie company announced.
The bra, which also comes with a body chain, is composed of more than 2,100 Swarovski diamonds “and responsibly sourced topaz,” the company said in a news release. It has at least 71 carats on the centerpiece and took over 930 hours to create.
Hosk, a 29-year-old from Stockholm, Sweden, told People on Tuesday that when she tried on the bra during a fitting, “it was just a sensation that I’ve never felt before.”
“My body was violently shaking. And it wasn’t because I was nervous, I was just excited,” Hosk said. “It was a cool feeling that I’ve never felt before. And it was definitely a moment that I’ll never forget.”
She described the lingerie as “very cool, very simple, modern and so sparkly. If I would have designed it, it would have looked just like this. I put it on and I was like, ‘It looks like someone just made magic and put it on my body.’”
While the cost of the brassiere is certainly higher than the price of a traditional Victoria’s Secret bra, the store said a version of the undergarment will be available to customers on Nov. 29 for $250 at select stores and online.
The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will air Dec. 2 in New York City, United States.

The photo of this female corp member is causing quite a stir on social media for an obvious reason – taking a harmless selfie while she’s in her NYSC uniform, her shirt didn’t seem to fit her perfectly and it’s all thanks to her ample bosoms.
The quite lovely lady has everyone talking about her after she shared the selfie on social media and some even made a joke out the inscription on her shirt directly on her bosoms “connecting naija youths“.
Indeed, what she has on her chest literally can connect lots and lots of Nigerian youths… Lol
Yesterday in Abuja, President Muhammadu Buhari has reassured Nigerians that his administration will sustain massive investments to upgrade and develop the country’s transport and power infrastructure.
He spoke when he received members of the Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria (ARCAN) led by Ambassador Oladapo Fafowora. The President told the retired Ambassadors that Nigerians will never forget the ‘‘lost opportunity between 1999 and 2015,’’ when the nation had huge resources at its disposal.
“There is no part of the country I haven’t been to, having attempted to be President four times. I know the condition of our roads. The rails were literally killed, there was no power despite the admittance of some previous leadership that they spent $16 billion on the sector.
Today, we are getting our priorities right and we believe that of the three fundamental issues we campaigned on security, the economy and fighting corruption, we have remained very relevant and Nigerians believe we have achieved something,” the President said.
President Buhari also used the occasion to appreciate the People’s Republic of China for financing some of the rail and power projects in the country through concessionary loans.
“I will do my best to see that where there are possibilities of making a quick improvement on infrastructure, we will do it,” he said.
President Buhari also appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to consider what this government inherited and the more it is doing with fewer resources in putting the economy right.
The President took note of some concerns raised by the retired Ambassadors including an appeal for the adjustment of their pension entitlements, retention of diplomatic passport for retired career ambassadors, allocation of land for ARCAN headquarters in Abuja and adequate funding of the Foreign Affairs ministry, among others.
The Leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC and the Trade Union Congress TUC have suspended its proposed nationwide strike which was slated for November 6th.
The labour unions had planned to embark on an indefinite strike on Tuesday to press home their demands for an upward review of the minimum wage from N18, 000 to N30, 000.
Rising from a meeting of the tripartite committee set up by the federal government, NLC president, Ayuba Wabba, told reporters that the decision to suspend the industrial action was taken after agreements were reached and documents signed.
“Having reached this position and agreements signed, the proposed strike action is hereby suspended,” he said.
Efforts to resolve the disagreement between government and labour initially suffered a set back on Monday as both parties failed to reach consensus on the minimum wage.
After meeting for over seven hours, the two teams arrived at different figures. While labour insisted on N30,000, the government delegation proposed N24,000.
Chris Ngige, minister of labour, had said the two figures would be forwarded to President Muhammadu Buhari for approval.
The meeting continued at 10pm and after two hours of deliberation, both sides agreed on an amount.
Wabba, who did not disclose the figure of the new minimum wage arrived at by the committee, said only the amount would be presented to Buhari.
He said the amount would only be made public after the committee’s report would have been presented to the president by 4.15pm on Tuesday.

“After the tests performed no bone injury has been appreciated and has been discharged. Additional tests will be held tomorrow in Elche.”
However, on Monday, the Spanish side revealed the 20-year-old will be spending the next four weeks on the sidelines after suffering a rib fracture.
This rules him out of the crucial Afcon qualifier against Bafana Bafana on November 17 and Uganda friendly three days later.
“Francis Uzoho has undergone today’s radiological tests at the Tesla Clinic that determine that the player has a fracture of the seventh costal arch after the blow suffered yesterday at the Ramón de Carranza Stadium,” read a club statement.
“The estimated time of withdrawal is four weeks.”
Uzoho also confirmed the information on his Instagram, expressing his disappointment at missing out on international duty ever since making his debut against Argentina in November 2017.
“Injury is part of the game, definitely not the best timing but there are things beyond us,” Uzoho wrote on Instagram.
“So sad I won’t be there for my teammates for the next four weeks they’re more than capable to get the job done.
“Coming back a beast. In Christ alone!”
Uzoho, alongside Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Daniel Akpeyi, was included in Gernot Rohr’s 23-man squad for the upcoming games.
However, it is yet to be seen what decision the German handler would make in terms of who replaces the shot-stopper and/or who gets the nod between the sticks in the clashes.
The Super Eagles sit atop Group E log with nine points from four games while Stuart Baxter’s men, a point adrift, are placed second.
