A South African man has been arraigned before the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s court on Tuesday, August 14, for allegedly raping his neighbor’s pregnant goat.
According to information gathered, the suspect, 33, would remain in custody until his next court appearance at a date to be determined later.
The suspect was arrested on charges of bestiality on Friday morning after he allegedly raped the female goat the previous evening.
His neighbour, and owner of the goat, Knowledge Khumalo said he heard the goat making strange noises around 20:00 on the evening in question.
When he woke up the next morning, he went to check in on the kraal and found the goat was missing.
“I went around the community looking for the goat without any success,” said Khumalo. “Later when I returned home, I found the goat was back. However, it looked unwell.”
As he was examining the goat, a man approached Khumalo and asked whether he was the goat’s owner.
“He then told me that he had been at the suspect’s shack that morning and had found the goat in his bed,” said Khumalo.
Community members, including CPF members, later converged at the suspect’s shack where they confronted him.
The man is said to be bricklayer by profession and was reportedly paid R4 500 earlier on the day of the alleged rape for work.
“He must have drank a lot,” said Khumalo.
Khumalo said he was shattered to see the raped goat in such a sad state.
“I felt I should have done something to protect the goat,” he said.
The goat has been taken in by the SPCA for medical treatment.
SPCA inspector Mishack Matlou said the incident was the “highest form of animal cruelty he has experienced”.
“As the SPCA, we want to call on the judiciary to take tough action against cases of cruelty against animals”

Former EFCC chairman, Nuhu Ribadu, has described Northern Nigeria region as the most backward region in the world.
Ribadu made the description while speaking at the launch of two books titled “Sect and social disorder” and “Quaranic Schools in Northern Nigeria” in Abuja yesterday, August 15th.
Ribadu said the Almajiri system of education being practiced in the North is the worst form of dehumanization.
“I am from Yola, we have similar culture with Kaduna, Kano but we don’t have Almajiri, what is happening? We are also Muslims. There are lots of areas where we have similar things. Which education are we talking about, these are some things that are incredible and you don’t know where to start. There is nothing worse, in the form of violation and abuse of rights, more than the Almajiri system, yet people are justifying it, comfortably calling themselves as products of it. I think we have to look at it crucially otherwise we will continue to go that direction that we will not be able to solve her problems.
“We are the most backward people in this world, the society of northern Nigeria. Look at all the indices in the world today, we are the worst. Why? How can we continue to deny ourselves our future? I worked on many of those crises and conflicts as a member of the investigation team and tribunal, I was in Zango Kataf, I was in Tafawa Balewa, I was in Kaduna religious crisis, I was among the prosecutors of El-Zakzaky in the 1990s.
“During the Kaduna religious disturbance of 2000, we visited where they buried the victims along Birnin Gwari road, they opened the graves for us, what I saw is still haunting me. There were bodies, all of them young boys, no girls that is talking about Almajiri – boys over 100 buried in mass graves and no identity, not a single one of them had a name and they were all buried, I got interested in this.
“I said let me see and get it touch with those who are responsible for it. They were victims of the crisis that took place in Kaduna because of the Sharia riots. They said they did not have their identity or Mallam responsible for them. Did anyone come to complain that they have lost a child? They said no. I was also in interpol, I had a duty to do outside Nigeria. I flew British Airways. Few days after that and the governor who introduced Sharia to Nigeria had his kids there and they all went to the first class. It was terrible for me. I could not say anything throughout the flight. The sight of those young boys, buried, unidentified – nobody is talking about it, the families never even complained, not even their so-called mallams.” Ribadu said
Renowned financial expert, Mr. Bismarck Rewane has faulted a report rating Lagos as third worst city to live in the world.
A report issued on Tuesday by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) had cited security, education and healthcare delivery as benchmarks for its ratings.
But speaking on a Television programme, ‘Network Africa’ on Channels TV monitored by our correspondent, Rewane, who is the Chief Executive Officer, Financial Derivatives Company, described the report as subjective adding that the criteria used in reaching such conclusion was inconsistent.
He said: “First and foremost, I think the report is subjective and it is based on warped criteria. Certainly, in a survey that says that number 86 is Johannesburg when you talk about crime, terrorism, insurgency and Lagos is number 138 out of 140, it’s unfortunate.
“I feel safer in Lagos than in Johannesburg in terms of crime. I cannot stop at a traffic light in Johannesburg without looking over my shoulder, in Lagos I could probably do that.”
EIU had ranked cities like Vienna, Melbourne, Osaka, Tokyo as the ten most-liveable cities, and ranked cities such as Damascus, Dakar, Karachi and Lagos as the 10 least liveable cities in 2018.
While stating that he was not in any way making excuses for Lagos, Rewane said that the survey itself was based on certain values which may not be universal.
He explained: “But having said that, to say that the risk of insurgency in Lagos – because I heard the interview and the guys talked about Boko Haram – quite frankly there is no Boko Haram existential threat in Lagos as anywhere.
“Lagos is safer from Boko Haram than say Yaoundé in Cameroon. So, I find it difficult to understand the criteria. Yes, there are other criteria but obviously to rank Lagos as the third worst city to live in in the world is a bit above the top.”
Rewane however said that Lagos still had a lot to do on terms of improving access in two critical sectors- healthcare and education.
“Lagos falls short definitely in access to healthcare because you can’t have a medical emergency in Nigeria and in Lagos in particular. Lagos falls short in terms of education, but having said that, we have a population in Lagos of anything between 12 to 20 million people. Things are improving but the message that paints to us is that Nigeria has to wake up and has to work hard. Whether you like it or not Nigeria is the 5th most populous country in the world. And Lagos is rising among the ranks of cities in terms of population.
“So, urban transit, urban renewal and things like that which Governor (Akinwunmi) Ambode is working on assiduously, it’s good enough to work hard on it but you must achieve the results that people want. Because other people are looking at us and ranking us.”
He also stated that “having said that, I must come out strongly that the EIU criteria is a bit subjective and does not reflect the truth. Lagos is definitely not the third worst city to live in in the world. I stand by that and I am ready to join issues with the Economic Intelligence Unit whom I respect anyway, for their economic analysis. But in this case, I join issues with them.”
Despite his take on the EIU rating, Rewane said there are rooms for improvement in Lagos, which is currently adjudged as the fastest growing and the fifth largest economy in Africa.
“Lagos is not the most luxurious or affluent city to live in. And there are many Lagos. There are people living in Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki. And there are people who are living in the slums of Makoko and others. But this is not…, look if I go to Rio de Janeiro, if I go to Sao Paulo, even in London, there are slums. So, the truth is that the slum of Lagos is not as bad as it used to be. But when you compare it to other cities in the world, I would not say that Lagos is worse than Jakarta when you talk about the slums in Indonesia. I cannot say that Lagos slums are worse than those of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. But that does not mean that this justifies the slums.
“This is not a race to the bottom. But the point is that Lagos has a lot of work to do in terms of urban renewal, urban mass transit, waste management and so many other things. Crime, kidnapping and ransom, but if you look at crime in Lagos, I do not subscribe to the view that crime in Lagos is worse than crime in any of these crime cities.
More people – maybe the data is not available- more people die in the city of Chicago from gunshots than you can put in Lagos 10 times over.” (PM News)

A lady has reportedly been arrested for scalding her stepson with hot water following a fight she had with the baby’s mother.
The incident occurred yesterday in Gantsa, Jigawa State – it was gathered that the suspect had engaged in a fight with the victim’s mom and to get back at her, she aimed at her son.
According to one Rilwanu Labashu Yayari, an eyewitness, the boy has since been taken to a hospital in the area, while the suspect is currently having her time inside police custody.
This news comes not more than a day after we reported of a plus-sized lady who was scalded with acid by her young ex-lover because they couldn’t be together maritally.
It was gathered that the woman had been formerly married, but broke up with her spouse, before falling in love with the said ex-lover.
Reports have it that because the said young man is actually younger than Nkiru, his family insisted they put an end to the relationship as their son would never marry an older woman. The lady’s family also concurred, but the young man wouldn’t give up, it was said. Read full story here
Bolanle Alo, the Nigerian man who died after an altercation with Canada border services officers last week, promised he wouldn’t go quietly if ordered out of the country, his detention hearing documents show.
The 49-year-old father of two died in Calgary on Aug. 7 after an altercation with Canada Border Services Agency officers while on a KLM airlines plane bound for Amsterdam. He was set to be deported to Nigeria.
The plane hadn’t yet departed Calgary’s airport when Alo went into medical distress; he was pronounced dead at Peter Lougheed hospital about 90 minutes later.
“You will have to carry me like a dead man, because I’m not going to my death,” Alo is quoted as saying in evidentiary documents submitted by Wingert, the legal counsel representing minister of public safety and emergency preparedness Ralph Goodale on July 26 at Alo’s first detention hearing.
By that point, Alo had been detained for 48 hours. This was his first detention hearing, administered by the immigration division of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.
No charges expected in death of foreign national following altercation with border services on plane
Wingert drew attention to two statements in the documents she submitted for Alo’s July 26 hearing. The first:
“On that day (of deportation), I will be the dog on a leash, and you will have to drag me through fire. I am a dead man. I have nothing to lose.” The second: “I understand that you have concerns that I will cause an issue that will disrupt my removal. You are absolutely correct about this. I will cause a big issue and will not go.”
The July 26 transcript, obtained by the Toronto Star, details how Alo first began immigration procedures in October 2005.
According to Immigration and Refugee Board member Jerry Cikes, who was overseeing the detention hearing, the Nigerian’s refugee claim was rejected. After that, both of Alo’s applications to remain in Canada based on humanitarian and compassionate grounds were rejected, as was his pre-removal risk assessment (PRRA).
According to the Government of Canada website, a PRRA is “an opportunity for people who are facing removal from Canada to seek protection by describing, in writing, the risks they believe they would face if removed. Persons whose PRRA applications are approved may stay in Canada.”
Some of Alo’s testimony in the transcripts provides a glimpse into his fear of returning to Nigeria.
During his regularly attended meetings with CBSA officials, Alo says, “I (am) always insisting that going to Nigeria would be a very dangerous trip for me … I still have some bullets in my body that are yet to be extracted.”
Alo also alludes to his younger brother, who he says “wasn’t that lucky.” The Calgary-based lawyer representing Alo’s widow, Elias Munshya, said he wasn’t clear on the specifics of why Alo feared a return to his home country.
But Munshya said he was led to believe that the Nigerian’s younger brother had been killed, which may have caused him to fear for his own life.
Late Monday night, a Prairie region spokesperson for the CBSA said the agency can’t respond to specific questions about Alo’s case because the Calgary Police Service is investigating.
Police spokesman Corwin Odland said there are few details the service can share.
“We are still working to track down and interview witnesses from the flight and don’t want any information we release to influence their recollection of events before we can get their statements,” Odland said in an emailed statement.
Alberta’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to determine Alo’s cause of death, he said.
A spokesman at the office of Ralph Goodale, public safety and emergency preparedness minister, said staff there are working on legislation to create a new way to review CBSA officer conduct complaints and conditions.
“Complaints about employee conduct can be made to the agency itself, the Canadian Human Rights Commission and the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal,” spokesman Scott Bardsley said.
