Nollywood actress, Keira Hewatch has revealed in an interview with Sunday Punch how her resemblance with Mercy Johnson has brought her blessings but also exposed her to derogatory comments from people.
Read the excerpts of the interview below:
Initially, I didn’t enjoy the support of my parents because they are religious people and they believed that the industry was corrupt and immoral.
They felt it was not a place for a Christian lady to be in. I understood their point of view but I had to do what I had always wanted to do.
I respect and love my parents but I also have to take charge of my life. Eventually, they came to see that and they have been very supportive of my career.
While speaking on her moment of breakthrough in the Industry, Keira Hewatch said:
I became well-known after I featured in the movie, Two Brides and a Baby, but I have done a few films that have gone straight to online television. Other movies I have starred in include In the Name of Trust, Murder at Prime Suites, Dinner, Lekki Housewives and Fifty, among others.
How her resemblance with Mercy Johnson has helped her career:
I used to get insulted for looking like Mercy Johnson. The last time I got insulted was when I starred in the movie, Two Brides and a Baby.
Since that time, I have not experienced such. Back then, it made me sad because I was being insulted based on something I did not understand.
Mercy Johnson is a beautiful woman and for anyone to compare us is really something to be thankful for.
Sade Adu’s Transgender son, who apparently, was a female before and decided he prefers the masculine gender, has shown off his ‘chest’ after his breast removal surgery.
Writing on his Instagram few months back, the only known child of the Nigerian-British singer revealed that he underwent surgery recently, and is now able to wear the male designer shirts he had previously left hanging in his wardrobe.
“So many tops I can wear now that I couldn’t before my surgery so happs!! Plus copped this piece,” he said in the post, posing in a Raph Lauren shirt.
This interesting update comes after he revealed that he already lost his previous feminine voice. Ila, who seemingly now goes by the name ‘Izaak Theo’, shared a video of his remarkable development since he started taking testosterone injections.
And that’s not all: he already has grown facial hair, and now topped with the male physique, one can hardly guess he was ever a female.
Nollywood Actress, Bose Alao had called out her footballer husband over domestic violence, but has since apologized.
She has now revealed that they were both violent towards each other during the course of their marriage.
In a recent chat with Punchng, Bose maintained that her marriage was intact. “I want to take my family off social media because it is not helping me.
My husband is not someone who addresses issues on the Internet; it seems like I’m the only one talking. It is true that we had issues’ she said
‘On that particular day, which was our 10th year wedding anniversary, we had a fight and he smashed my phone and I was very angry.
‘It wasn’t even the fight we had that angered me; it was the fact that he destroyed my phone.
‘Because of that, I poured out my anger on my WhatsApp status, where he would see it.
‘I didn’t want it to be public knowledge, initially, but a journalist on my contact list screen-grabbed my updates and posted them online’ she added.
Bose Alao also said they are both undergoing therapy at the moment, ‘that type of news actually affects my husband’s career. To be honest with you, I and my husband are violent towards each other and we’re trying to get help.
Whenever he hits me, I retaliate but everybody knows that he can beat me.Every marriage has issues but we often expect too much from our partners.
There was a time my pastor even told me that I should put water in my mouth whenever I am angry but it didn’t work and I spat out the water when we were fighting.
We are both undergoing therapy right now. Now, I am very quiet; even when my husband is upset, I keep calm. I thank God that there is peace in our marriage now and I pray there wouldn’t be any incidence of domestic violence again’.
‘When you beat a woman, she develops unbridled hatred for you. I believe a woman has the power to mould her husband into whatever shape she wants; anybody can change.
‘When we came back together, we were both sorry and are both looking for ways to coexist peacefully because of our children. All our offspring are girls and a lot of men don’t want to marry women from broken homes.”
While speaking in an exclusive interview with PUNCH Saturday Beats, veteran musician, Professor Linkin, came out fully for Pana crooner, Tekno for failing to acknowledge him as the original owner of the song, “Kpolongo”, which he sampled the hit song in his single, “Jogodo”.
According to Professor Linkin who laid his mind bare, Tekno settled Danfo Drivers with N2 million but ignored him.
Recall that in the song, Tekno also sampled some lines from a song originally done by a music duo from Ajegunle named Danfo Drivers. When the music duo raised dust over the use of their material, Tekno settled with them in private and is even set to drop a new single with them soon.
However, all of that didn’t sit well with Professor Linkin who felt Tekno ought to have contacted him too just as he did with the Danfo Drivers.
In an exclusive chat with Saturday Beats, Prof. Linkin said his issue with Tekno is far from being over till the artiste also acknowledges him as the originator of the word, Jogodo, which was the name of his album in 2003.
He told Saturday Beats that he heard rumours that the Danfo Drivers were placated with N2m for the song when they raised dust. He said, “I am the owner of that song ‘Jogodo’ and I hold the copyright to the name, ‘Jogodo’. Tekno did not inform me before he released the song and the funniest part is that after he made the song and Danfo Drivers complained, he went to meet them to apologise but ignored me. In fact, it was not until Danfo Drivers began to grant interviews to the press stating that Tekno did not inform them before releasing the song that he reached out to them after an event.
“Danfo Drivers are my friends and immediately the news broke that they had made peace with Tekno, I called them and asked why they did not tell him that I am the originator of ‘Jogodo’ but they gave me some excuses and claimed that the singer did not give them anything. I am not dead, so why would someone want to take something I worked hard to get. I am the originator of ‘Jogodo’ in the whole world. I am the only one that can tell people the real meaning of the word ‘Jogodo’. I heard rumours that Teckno paid Danfo Drivers N2m. As my friends, I asked them if it was true and they denied it. When I called to ask them, they said that he did not give them anything than apology. They claimed that they sat down, had some drinks, chatted and took pictures. If they are lying, God is watching them because I cannot read their mind,” the singer said.
Prof. Linkin further said that because they are colleagues, he would not take the case to court but he advised the singer to reach out to him and make amends.
He mentioned his own terms and condition on the matter. “I am the originator of ‘Jogodo’. Before I sang the song, ‘Jogodo’, no one ever used the slang. It was due to the commercial success of my song that the word ‘Jogodo’ became a slang. I just want Tekno to be remorseful and admit that he made a mistake. We are all human beings. I think he or his management is feeling pompous and I do not know why. Probably Danfo Drivers told them that they own ‘Jogodo’, I just don’t know.
“I would not drag him to court but I would still monitor the situation before I take a final decision. I know dragging him to court is the right thing to do because what he did is illegal but I would wait and watch to see if he would reach out to me. All I need from him is to give me money or we should do a remix of that song together for the world to know that I am the originator of the song. Now, he is making millions with the song but I have not made a dime over my intellectual property because he is acting as if he is the originator of the song. Most of the songs these boys are singing emanated from Ajegunle but they would refine them and make them seem like their own. It is very bad and so painful,” he said.
Moses Mercy, an alleged prostitute based in Ozuri, Kogi State, was said to have been raped by a pastor and three of his church members to death and her body parts suspected to have been used for money ritual.
Principal suspect, Pastor Segun Otaru, and three alleged accomplices, Abdulmumini Yakubu, Samuel Segun and Mike Stephen (at large) of the Voice of Canaan Church, C and S, Ozuri in Adavi local government area of Kogi State, were among ten persons accused of armed robbery, kidnapping and other vices in Kogi State.
The pastor and suspected accomplices were alleged to have raped the victim to death, removed her hands, legs as well as the head and buried her body in the church.
Two of the suspects, Mike Stephen and Abdulmumuni Yakubu, after allegedly killing Mercy, had sex again with the dead body before cutting the hands, legs and head which they roasted, mixed with a lotion for Otaru to drink and rub on his body in order to get rich.
Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP William Aya, confirmed the story, saying the pastor, through a hotel attendant (name withheld) in Ozuri, had lured the alleged sex workers, an indigene of Benue State, from a hotel to his house where they carried out the act.
Three days after, and Mercy had yet to return to the hotel, the attendant became apprehensive and called them, only to be frustrated by their response.
The attendant, apparently disturbed by the situation, reported to the police in Adavi.
But sensing that the police in Adavi were foot dragging, he took the matter to the police headquarters in Lokoja who swung into action and arrested the three suspects, with one still at large.
Sunday Vanguard gathered that the victim hardly engaged in ‘home service’ but a decline in patronage for a longer time following the adverse economic situation in the country changed her position.
She honoured the invitation only to meet her untimely death. The pastor and suspected accomplices confessed to the crime which they blamed on poverty.
Otaru told Sunday Vanguard that they got tired of their low life and decided to help themselves to the ritual suggestion brought by one of them who said he learned it while staying in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
On the idea of having sex with Mercy’s body, Yakubu, who said they believed sleeping with a dead lady will save them from vehicular accident, said the sex act felt the same with a live woman. The police said they had launched a manhunt for the fourth suspect, Mike Stephen.
Otaru claimed the Mercy case was the third time he would engage in money ritual as the two previous attempts failed. According to the 45-year-old, he exhumed corpses from a cemetery in the two failed attempts and cut the needed parts for the ritual but money did not come.
He said he expected to make at least N2.5 million from the latest attempt which led to the murder of Mercy. The principal suspect explained that he connived with the three suspects, who he described as members of his church, to commit the crime.
Otaru said it was the quest to get rich quick that made him to venture into money ritual as he could not wait for God’s time to be rich.
The pastor, however, said he knew that what he did was against the preaching in christianity and the Word of God and he would not enter the Kingdom of God.
The disappearance of Mercy from the hotel where she used to ply her trade, for more than three days, had raised the suspicion of a hotel attendant.
Two of the suspects, Oluwasegun Samuel and Abdulmumini Yakubu, had gone to the hotel in Adavi to pick the deceased and took her away. Unfortunately for the suspects, they left their telephone numbers with the hotel attendant through which they were contacted when the lady did not return.
The PPRO said the two suspects were first arrested and that, after interrogation by the homicide detectives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), confessed to the gory details of how they were allegedly hired by the principal suspect (pastor) to get a lady for money ritual with a promise to pay them N700, 000.
The arrested suspects thereafter led the police to Uhodo, also in Adavi council area, where the remains of Mercy were buried in a shallow grave and it was discovered that vital organs and head of the victim had been removed.
In a recent interview, the Nollywood actress, advised other celebrities to be careful on the personal information they post on social media.
Her reasons? Such information, she explained, could be so sensitive to the extent of causing a blockage in their career later in life.
Citing her case as an example, the pretty mother of two said, “I am a perfect example of one out of many celebrities who never post private life affairs on social media.
“I’m very careful about what I post on social media. I post what is needed to be posted and not frivolities. I don’t have to post, especially, if it has to do with my private life.” It’s my private life and I believe my private life should remain private.”
The actress said many celebrities still go ahead to wash their dirty linens in the public, especially, on social media platform.
“I try not to share many things, because one thing about too much information is that when it gets back at you, not everybody wants to know why you shared it.
“I will rather not put very sensitive things out there just to avoid mishaps,” Wright said.
Having done a good job in hiding her current lover from the media, Bukky Wright said, “There’s nothing wrong with you being in love with the right person. Love is a beautiful thing.”
Fathia Balogun & Dayo Amusa had always been good friends and generated envy among fellow actresses.
They were always at outings together, an item wherever they went.
49-year-old Faithia has always been friends with younger people in the industry.
Dayo Amusa, who would always flaunt Faithia’s kids on her page, calls her Adunni, while Fathia calls her Aduke.
Surprisingly, things must have fallen apart between these two friends who have a large fan base.
Recently, Faithia put up a post on friendship and why people should avoid fake friends.
“No matter what you do, people will not be satisfied, the ones you call your friends are the ones who will laugh behind your back and stab you.
“Be careful of this kind of friends,” she inserted an inscription on her IG handle.
She also wrote:
“Friendship is beautiful but when it is not getting the right things done neither is it moving you forward it’s time to check things out.
“Have a beautiful day my people! I love you all.” ❤❤❤?
As if waiting for her to write this, Dayo Amusa was at the comment section and wrote: “Practice what you preach.”
This triggered reactions from their fans who took over the comment section.
While some supported Dayo, many condemned her action citing example of her post recently when Wunmi Toriola, a Nollywood actress, lambasted Toyin Abraham.
Dayo, then, had written on the insubordination in the industry and why upcoming artistes should be placed on check.
Sources close to the actresses (Faithia and Dayo)revealed that there is a misunderstanding on their personal relationships with some certain men.
“They are women and they all roll together in the social circles. Though none has talked about it to colleagues, its obvious it has to do with intimate relationship they are having with men. Very soon, everything will be unveiled,” the source said.

It’s no doubt that every mother’s prayer is to see her child progress, but it’s also a fact that the Joy of every mother is that her child(ren) don’t forget her.

Sometime ago, actress Bose Omotoyossi announced that her 10-year-old marriage to footballer, Rasaq, had hit the rocks.
She had written at the time that her husband often battered her and she wasn’t ready to endure the violence anymore. This was days after the couple celebrated their wedding anniversary.
However, in an exclusive chat with Sunday Scoop, Bose maintained that her marriage was intact. She said, “I want to take my family off social media because it is not helping me. My husband is not someone who addresses issues on the Internet; it seems like I’m the only one talking. It is true that we had issues. On that particular day, which was our 10th year wedding anniversary, we had a fight and he smashed my phone and I was very angry. It wasn’t even the fight we had that angered me; it was the fact that he destroyed my phone.”
“Because of that, I poured out my anger on my WhatsApp status, where he would see it as we do not follow each other on Instagram and other social media. After that incident, I went with my kids to a nearby hotel because I wanted him to feel the pain I felt. I didn’t want it to be public knowledge initially but a journalist on my contact list screen-grabbed my updates and posted them online. That type of news actually affects my husband’s career. To be honest with you, I and my husband are violent towards each other and we’re trying to get help. Whenever he hits me, I retaliate but everybody knows that he can beat me.”
“I had to contact Star Helpline, which is an international organisation, and we are undergoing therapy right now. This is actually our second week in therapy. Every marriage has issues but we often expect too much from our partners. There was a time my pastor even told me that I should put water in my mouth whenever I am angry but it didn’t work and I spat out the water when we were fighting.”
Explaining her reasons for staying in the marriage, she said, “I am not staying in a violent marriage because of my children; they were actually the reason I wanted to leave. However, one also has to consider the kids. The best I can do is to make sure that they’re in good psychological state. The performance of my kids in school actually dropped during that period. We actually went our separate ways for some time so that frayed nerves could be calmed. When we came back together, we were both sorry and are both looking for ways to coexist peacefully because of our children. All our offspring are girls and a lot of men don’t want to marry women from broken homes.”
On the lessons she has learnt from the episode, Omotoyossi said, “I have learnt to keep my personal life away from social media. Now, I am very quiet; even when my husband is upset, I keep calm. I thank God that there is peace in our marriage now and I pray there wouldn’t be any incidence of domestic violence again. When you beat a woman, she develops unbridled hatred for you. I believe a woman has the power to mould her husband into whatever shape she wants; anybody can change.”

The ‘almighty’ Argentina that painfully crashed the super Eagles out of the world cup have also met their doom after France defeated them moments ago, 4-3.
France had taken the lead in the first half when they were awarded a penalty and Antoine Griezmann made sure to put the ball at the back of the neck.
In the same first half, Argentina equalized the game when Di Maria scored few minutes to the end of the first half.
The second half got quite challenging as Argentina took the lead but France had a comeback minutes later and then Kylian Mbappe added two more goals to make the scoreline, 4 – 2.
Argentina tried her best at injury time when Sergio Aguero scored another goal but unfortunately for the South Americans, this is where their Journey of the FIFA World cup ends.
10 students in JSS1 and JSS3, aged 14 and 15 years old have been arrested by the anti-cultism squad of Enugu State Police Command, for belong to the Viron Queens or White Angels confraternities, Sun reports.
Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Danmallam, revealed that the operation was carried out after the Command received a tip-off that students of several Enugu secondary schools.
According to Danmallam, the Command received a 30-name list of JSS students who were allegedly raped and initiated into cult groups.
Some of the students arrested were identified as Naomi Peace,15, Ruth Nwoke, 14, Chibuogu Adaeze, 15 and Ujunwa Ede, 14. Others were Chiemerie Olisakure, 15, Akalisi Chisom, 14 and Ogbu Ebere, 14.
The trio of Edeh, Peace and Nwoke told Saturday Sun they were introduced to the cult by a friend and at their initiation in 2017, were raped each by 5 different boys.
Another victim, Adaeze, claimed “We didn’t know they put drugs in the drinks they gave us. From there, we were initiated and raped by six boys.” Olisakure also added: “We were threatened not to tell anybody.
The irony is that at the closing hour of the school, three of the same boys who initiated us would come with bike and take us away to have sex with us. After that, they give us N1,500, as transport fare.”
Chisom, also raped by five boys, said the incident took place at a friend’s party in a hotel. She further alleged, “Some of our teachers know that we are members of Viron Queen Confraternity.
We don’t respect our male and female teachers. Some of them used the advantage to sleep with us because we don’t want them to tell our parents.” Some of them also confessed to indulging in cigarette smoking and drinking beer at parties or clubs.
The Commissioner of Police, Danmallam, said the police are still investigating the case. The next phase of action, he added, is detectives going after those who raped and initiated the girls.
Nollywood actress Dayo Amusa has insisted that Nigerian men prefer plus size women for marriage.
Speaking with Punch, she said she was comfortable with her big size.
Amusa stated, “As far as I am concerned, I have always been very comfortable in my own body. I realised that fingers are not equal and everybody has their own way of thinking and they are entitled to their own opinion, so I cannot crucify anyone about how they feel about my size.”
“However, I have always been comfortable in my skin. “It has always been easy for me to get clothes I like, but there are times that you see some trendy outfits that would not fit because I am plus sized. Despite that, there are a lot of beautiful products for plus size women that would not even look good on slim girls.” She also insisted that men would rather go for plus size women when they wanted to get married.”
“Yes, I know they do. Ninety per cent of African men would go for plus size women because we are very ‘accommodating’. I think the only reason a man would go for a slim lady is due to the ‘slay mama’ trend on social media, but when men want to settle, they go for plus size women,” she stated.

You recently delved into music to the amazement of most of your fans, why did it take you this long to pursue that passion?
I think it took me this long to showcase my musical talent because I got more attention from my acting career which has spanned over a decade. I had to embrace my acting career and make sure my foot was solid on that soil. When I realised that I was fulfilled in my acting career, I decided to give my singing career a shot. This is a talent I know I have always had and I even sing behind the camera or when I am with my friends. When I produced my movie, ‘Unforgivable,’ I did the soundtrack for it. A lot of people were amazed. The feedback I got was what made me put some seriousness into my music. I just felt it was another way to reach out to my fans.
How has the feedback been for you since you ventured into music?
To be honest, I love it when people criticise what I do; I seriously look out for critics. To my surprise, I have not had an occasion whereby my fans would ask me why I ventured into music. There are some people that wonder why I do music but they are all entitled to their opinion. Till date, I have only been receiving positive reviews. The encouraging comments I have been getting is what has motivated me to continue doing music.
There are a lot of popular female musicians like Tiwa, Omawumi, Yemi Alade to mention a few; how do you hope to compete with them?
I do not think I am into any competition with anyone in my field either in the music or movie sector. I try as much as possible to be at the right place at the right time while I do the right things. All the mentioned names are people that have done wonderfully well individually but the sky is so wide for all the stars to shine. I cannot be intimidated and I am not in competition with any of them because they are doing good music.
You are an actress, a singer and a proprietress of two schools. How have you been copping?
I would say that acting and singing are both under entertainment, so I have a way of scheduling that effortlessly. Besides, my mother always says if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. I do not rush into any venture; instead, I take my time and organise everything. I have a team that I work with, so it makes my tasks easy. It also helps me plan my life.
The report that I have two schools is not entirely true; the edifice I have in Ibadan is actually a fun fare garden while in Lagos, I have a crèche and not a school.
Why did you decide to go into that line of business?
Before I ventured into the entertainment industry, I had been a businesswoman. I grew up with my mother who was a trader and I always supported her. I came into the industry in 2002 and as a young aspiring actress, I was doing some petty trade by the side with my colleagues. I would say that I was able to get money for my production outfit through my business.
Have you always been comfortable with your tribal marks?
Yes, I have always been comfortable with the marks. In fact, if they had been more obvious than this, I would still have been comfortable with then. This is the way people have always seen me from the beginning of my career, so why shouldn’t I flaunt it.
When you were growing up, did you like the marks?
I have never seen the marks as a problem; in fact, this is the first time my attention is being drawn towards my tribal mark.
As a plus size lady, have you always loved your physique?
As far as I am concerned, I have always been very comfortable in my own body. I realised that fingers are not equal and everybody has their own way of thinking and they are entitled to their own opinion, so I cannot crucify anyone about how they feel about my size. However, I have always been comfortable in my skin.
Has it been easy for you getting clothes you really love despite your physique?
It has always been easy for me to get clothes I like but there are times that you see some trendy outfits that would not fit because I am plus sized. Despite that, there are a lot of beautiful products for plus size women that would not even look good on slim girls.
Yes, I know they do. Ninety per cent of African men would go for plus size women.
Why do you think so?
It is because we are very ‘accommodating’. I think the only reason a man would go for a slim lady is due to the ‘slay mama’ trend on social media but when men want to settle, they go for plus size women.
It seems one of your hobbies is travelling…
Yes, I love travelling. Sometimes I travel with my mother because we are very close and I grew up with her. I am a very busy person, so these are the ways I can create time for my family.
Asides travelling, what other things catch your fancy?
I like staying indoors; I could be an introvert sometimes.
Does it mean that you do not like partying?
I cannot rule that out because of my job. It is important to do some appearances due to my celebrity status but apart from that, I think I am an introvert.
When was the last time you went to a club?
About three months ago.
It was reported that you recently lost your father. How have you been faring?
I have yet to recover from the death of my father. His death is still very fresh and we recently held the 41 days prayer.
How close were you to your father?
We were not as close as I am with my mother but I loved him and had my time with my father.
Some people are of the opinion that being an actor is not lucrative and most jobs are done based on favours. How true is that?
To be honest, it is true to some extent. If actors are being paid the way they should be, maybe some people who have ventured into movie production would not have made that business move. Everything boils down to the issue of piracy.
But we see your face in a lot of movies. Does it mean they hardly pay you as well?
Gone are the days when I would go to a movie location and take care of myself with my money. I cannot remember the last time I went to a movie location and I was not well paid. I do not feature in any kind of movie and I ensure I maintain that standard. I do not believe that I have to feature in every movie, I have nothing to prove.
You have a degree in food science and technology. Is it right to assume that you love cooking?
The course is not really about cooking but I actually love to cook.
But with your busy schedule, do you have time to visit the kitchen?
I always find time to cook. Asides from my bedroom, my kitchen is another place I do not joke with.
What is your favourite meal?
I am a typical African woman, so I am a lover of any African delicacy.
It was reported that since you started your career in 2002; you are worth about $700,000. How true is that?
I am worth enough to live a very comfortable life.
Do you have a daughter?
I do not have a daughter. I have a little sister that a lot of people assume is my daughter. She is my mother’s last child.
Why have you not cleared the air before now?
I did not have any reason to do so. Everyone has their private life and I am not one that loves sharing hers. Anyone that assumes I have a child, I just keep mum till I am ready to talk about it.
Are you pressured by your mother to get married?
I get such talks from my mother but I also understand that she is doing that like any other parent would but as a person, you should not feel pressured to make certain decisions because everything would still be under control.
Based on some of your posts on social media, some people feel you have something against marriage…
I cannot crucify people for their opinion. I feel that being a single lady is not a disease and you should not be cast out because some people feel that because you attain some certain age, you ought to be married. We have a lot of people who got married at an early stage and the marriage broke up, there are some that wish that their marriages are over. For me, I always say that it is not a do or die affair.
Popular Nollywood actor Ik ogbonna forgot his wedding anniversary, and took to Instagram to ask his fans how to say sorry to his wife.

On Thursday afternoon, while ferrying passengers in his 18-seater bus from Lagos to the Mowe/Ibafo area of neighbouring Ogun, a bigger worry was added to Olaitan’s growing list.
A speeding tanker laden with around 33, 000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit lost control suddenly fell a few metres away from Otedola Bridge, a popular axis along the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, spilling its content all over the place and bursting into flames shortly afterwards.
The 41-year-old whose commercial bus was directly behind the ill-fated tanker, the moment brought a glimpse of perhaps what the end of the world would look like.
A Punch correspondent, who was at the Trauma and Burns wing of the Gbagada General Hospital where he and a handful other victims of the tragedy are being treated, went in with the party after posing to security men as his relative.
“I saw darkness everywhere immediately the tanker exploded,” he said while speaking with Saturday PUNCH on Friday on his hospital bed where yards of bandages now strapped him like an armour. “I thought I was going to die. It was as if the end had come. There was commotion everywhere, just like in a war. Nothing else came to my mind. We all believed it was the end,” he added soberly as he narrated his ordeal to his teary-eyed wife – Faidat – and other family members, who had come to check on him on Friday morning.
While attributing his narrow escape to divine grace, the Ile-Ife indigene said that for a few minutes after the tanker fell, he and others in the vehicle were confused as to what to do. He revealed that it was while it was being argued that the content of the truck was diesel or petrol that the entire place erupted in flames. According to him, after being briefly knocked out by the sound of the explosion, he managed to regain consciousness and enough strength to force his way out of the bus through the front passenger seat. But even after exiting the vehicle, his fears were far from over.
“I jumped into a gutter full of dirty water immediately I forced my way out of the bus,” he said, slowly adjusting his sitting position on the bed. “I had hoped to use the water to quench the fire on my body but unknown to me the water had already mixed with the petrol that had spilled from the tanker. That compounded my problem. While I was struggling to quench the fire on my body, I did not know that my head was burning. I managed to run across the road and into an uncompleted building where people around helped me put out the fire. That was my saving grace, otherwise only God knows what would have happened to me,” he stated.
Revealing how the tragedy and her husband’s present condition had affected their life as a family, Faidat told Saturday PUNCH that things had not remained the same since Thursday. According to her, they had expended almost all the money on them in trying to save his life.
“This tragedy has completely changed our life as a family,” she began. “The thought of him lying in the hospital and battling for survival has left us restless.
“My husband usually does not go out on Thursdays. No matter how much you offer him, he would not go to work on that day. But he went out to work that day because he was arrested by LASTMA operatives on Monday and he used all the money he realised to settle them. He had no money on him and that was why he decided to go out on Thursday to work.
Like the rest of the victims affected by Thursday’s deadly inferno, Mr. Wasiu Amoo had no inkling of what laid in wait for him when he left his home at Ibafo for work at nearby Kara that fateful morning. A dealer in granite and other building materials in the area, the 68-year-old, who lost his wife and best friend of several decades about three years ago, after completing another productive day at work, was heading home that evening when the commercial bus he boarded was caught up in the tragedy.
While other younger passengers managed to escape with minor burns and injuries, Amoo, perhaps due to age, couldn’t summon a similar swiftness. By the time he managed to drag himself to safety, there had been significant damage done to his aging body. He hangs precariously unto life at the Lagos hospital.
“Large parts of his body were severely burnt,” the 68-year-old’s daughter and fifth child, Aminat told Saturday PUNCH during an encounter on Friday. “He has not been able to open his eyes since that incident. Initially, he was not able to talk but after oxygen was administered on him on Friday morning, he had been talking gradually.
“Also, since that incident, he had not been able to urinate on his own; the nurses have been using a device to assist him to do that. He has been complaining of pains.
“We are praying to God to preserve his life. He is a good father; we cannot afford to lose him now. Since we lost our mother three years ago, he has been playing both roles for us. We beg God to spare his life,” she said.
Also lucky to be alive is Mr. Seun Solarin, an official of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, who escaped death by mere inches. The young man returning home from work with three colleagues and a few others in a Mitsubishi space wagon that fateful evening was rushing to go and watch the ongoing FIFA World Cup taking place in Russia before things took a different turn. In a few deadly seconds, daylight turned to raging storm of fire that threatened to consume him and others inside the vehicle. Despite sustaining slight injury, Solarin is grateful to have lived to tell his story.
“If anybody told me I’d still be alive by now, I would doubt it,” he said, still looking frightened. “I saw it; I was there, in front of a huge fire, in front of death. I was sitting beside the driver, Williams, my colleague when everything happened. I thought war had broken out. I was afraid that life had come to an end.
“Before the incident, I and Williams noticed how the tanker was manoeuvring anyhow. The tanker driver was waving at other vehicles behind not to come close. As it approached Oando Filling Station, there was traffic and the driver decided not to move forward again. As he tilted the tanker towards the culvert in the middle of the road so that it would stop, the tanker started descending. One of the motor boys quickly disembarked and started throwing a big wood in front of the tyre to stop it. But the tanker climbed a stone and fell. Fuel started gushing out but the others said it was diesel and that it wouldn’t explode.
“But something told me that even if it was diesel, we were supposed to run for safety. So, I asked everyone in the car to run. I had not run up to 100 metres before the tanker exploded. It was like a bomb exploding in a war. I didn’t look back again until I reached Isheri.
“Williams and another colleague, called Aunty Maria are still missing. Another colleague inside the car who managed to escape had his scalp seriously burnt. I pray not to witness anything like this in my life again,” he said as he battled tears.
We’ll not give up searching for loved ones –Relatives of missing person
Family members and friends of persons missing after Thursday’s tanker explosion in Lagos have said that they would not end their search until they find them – dead or alive.
A handful of persons – young and old – have been declared missing by many residents of the city since the tragic incident, which claimed at least nine lives, left several others injured while also destroying over 50 vehicles.
While the destination of the dead and injured has been established, those searching for their loved ones have been confused as to where to turn to for help.
A family member of one missing person, Mr. Andrew Oshaba, told Saturday PUNCH that he had searched everywhere for his brother, Abraham, a 45-year-old man, since the tragedy without any luck.
The mobile policeman said his brother left his workplace at Ikoyi and was on his way home at the time of the incident, but that his wife had not been able to reach him since then.
According to him, his phone line has failed to connect since the time of the accident on Thursday.
The accident was said to have occurred at about 5:00pm on that fateful day.
He said,
“We have searched everywhere for our brother, Abraham, since on Thursday when the tanker exploded.
“He left his office at Ikoyi and was heading home to Mowe at about that time of the incident when his phone number was last reached by his wife. Ever since that day, we have not been able to reach him or know his whereabouts.
“We have been to the Accident and Emergency Centre at Toll Gate, Gbagada General Hospital, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, even where the bodies were said to have been taken to at Lagos Island; we have not been able to find him.
“It is very frustrating but we will not give up hope in finding him. Whatever the case may be, we will not be tired because he means a lot to us.”
A woman, Adenike Lateef, who said one of her sisters had been missing since Thursday’s tragedy, told Saturday PUNCH that in all the places they had been to, there had been no trace of Morenike, her sibling.
According to her, the young lady’s mobile telephone line has ceased to connect since the afternoon of that fateful day.
She said, “She is the last child of the family. She came to Lagos in search of a job four months ago and had been staying with me at Ogudu.
“On Thursday, she told me that she wanted to see a friend at Ojodu and that she would be back later that evening. I don’t know the friend she went to see but the troubling thing is that her number has not been connecting since that evening.
“I really hope she is fine. We have searched for her everywhere but have not found her. I have informed all our family members already; we will continue to look for her until she is found. I believe we will find her.”

Rosy Meurer, who was allegedly accused of having an affair with Tonto Dikeh’s ex-husband, Oladunni Churchill, took to her Instagram page to pray for Nigerian leaders to be guided about the state of the nation.
She wrote:
‘’In Jesus name, I ask the God of all grace to grant wisdom to political leaders In Nigeria to know what to do till hope returns to the hopeless. Amen ? #prayfornigeria #ournigeria #nigeria’’
A fan slammed her for this because he felt praying to God dressed half n*ked and in that manner is rude.
Rosy however would not condone that and she fired back.
