Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Tuesday directed that students in public and private schools in the state should sing the National Anthem in Yoruba Language daily, to preserve and promote the Yoruba culture.
The Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, relayed the directive at a meeting with Principals and Head Teachers of public schools in Lagos. Akinwunmi Ambode She said that Yoruba Language would also be made a compulsory subject for students. Gov. Ambode had signed the Yoruba Language Preservation and Promotion Bill into Law on Feb. 8. Adebule said that Wednesdays had been declared ‘Yoruba Speaking Day’ in schools, with all teaching and learning activities from assembly period to closing being done in Yoruba.
”Gov. Ambode wants me to pass this message to you, that henceforth, Yoruba language be made compulsory in both private and public schools. ”The National Anthem must be sung in Yoruba on a daily basis too.
“The Egbe Akomolede has done the translation and we will send the copies of the Yoruba version to your schools by Monday so you can begin to teach the students. ”I have also met with the owners of private schools and we have relayed this directive to them.
”We are also considering translating the textbooks of other subjects into Yoruba Language because I believe that when students are taught in their mother language, learning will be easy and their level of performance will improve.
”The state government is passionate about this Law, so we do not lose our language, culture and heritage,” she said. Adebule said the Ministry of Education was doing an assessment to ascertain the number of Yoruba teachers that would be required to effectively teach the language in public schools.
She appealed to the school managers to cooperate with the government to drive and ensure the effective implementation of the Yoruba Language Preservation and Promotion Law. Mr Lanre Ogunyemi, Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Education, said at the event that the development would be beneficial to the younger generation and generations unborn.
”In Finland, you must pass the Finnish Language before you are offered admission into high institutions. Same is done in Germany, China and other developed countries. ”We need to adopt such to drive development and foster national unity.
I beg you all to key into this law and make it work, ” Ogunyemi said. Reacting, Mr Mamodu Braimoh, Assistant Secretary, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Lagos Chapter, commended the state government for the development. Braimoh appealed to the government to ensure adequate training for Yoruba teachers as well as provide incentives to motivate them.
In Canada, more than 500 doctors and residents, as well as over 150 medical students, have signed a public letter protesting their own pay raises.
“We, Quebec doctors who believe in a strong public system, oppose the recent salary increases negotiated by our medical federations,” the letter says.
The group say they are offended that they would receive raises when nurses and patients are struggling.
“These increases are all the more shocking because our nurses, clerks and other professionals face very difficult working conditions, while our patients live with the lack of access to required services because of the drastic cuts in recent years and the centralization of power in the Ministry of Health,” reads the letter, which was published February 25.
“The only thing that seems to be immune to the cuts is our remuneration,” the letter says.
Canada has a public health system which provides “universal coverage for medically necessary health care services provided on the basis of need, rather than the ability to pay,” the government’s website says.
The 213 general practitioners, 184 specialists, 149 resident medical doctors and 162 medical students want the money used for their raises to be returned to the system instead.
“We believe that there is a way to redistribute the resources of the Quebec health system to promote the health of the population and meet the needs of patients without pushing workers to the end,” the letter says.
“We, Quebec doctors, are asking that the salary increases granted to physicians be canceled and that the resources of the system be better distributed for the good of the health care workers and to provide health services worthy to the people of Quebec.”
A physician in Canada is paid $260,924 ($339,000 Canadian) for clinical services by the government’s Ministry of Health per year on average, according to a report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information published in September 2017. On average, a family physician is paid $211,717 ($275,000 Canadian) for clinical services and a surgical specialist is paid $354,915 ($461,000 Canadian), according to the same report.
This is total gross pay, however, and does not take into account overhead each doctor pays to operate, as the Canadian Institute for Health Information is careful to point out to CNBC Make It.
In May 2016, one physician publicly broke down the cost of running his family practice, and though he brought in $231,033 ($300,000 Canadian), he was left with $136,906 ($177,876 Canadian) after subtracting his business expenses — but before taxes and employment benefits are taken out.

While addressing an audience at the 61st Independence day celebration of Ghana in Accra earlier today, President Buhari promised to help the Ghanaian government fight corruption in their country.
The head of states, during his speech, noted that with the right leadership and implementation of public policies, Africa’s quest to eradicate poverty and entrench democracy was on course.
He commended the Ghanaian president, Nana Akufo-Addo, on his achievements in his first year in office with particular reference to his committed efforts towards stamping out corruption from Ghana.
He’s quoted as saying,
Your Excellency can be assured that you have a good partner in me as I look forward to any form of collaboration between Nigeria and Ghana in tackling the menace of endemic corruption.
From Nigeria, I have watched closely your achievements, ranging from your ingenious approach to creating jobs for the teeming youths through various initiatives, including the repositioning of agriculture for modern farming, ‘Farming for Jobs and Food’, Senior High School (SHS) free education, One-District-One-Factory, and One-Village-One-Dam as well as the improvement being recorded in the Republic’s macroeconomic indicators.
All these efforts, I am aware, have made Ghana to become a good destination for foreign direct investment just like Nigeria. Accept my congratulations! I congratulate both the government and the Parliament for the quick passage of the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act and its signing into law.
Given all these public policies, it becomes reassuring that with the right leadership, Africa’s drives to eradicate poverty and to entrench democracy is on course,” he said.

Over the weekend, Big Brother Naija Housemate, BamBam emerged the Head of House, now are we going to witness a side of BamBAM that we have never seen before, let’s see how it goes.
Just Who Are You?
While self-confessed church girl Bambam appeared to have more than one trick up her sleeve with her bad boy BBNaija lover Teddy A, her standing with other Housemates tells a different story. She gets along with the girls, in that she only had a spat with Vandora. Yet she seemed particularly risk-adverse as she has made no particular efforts to go out of her way to create special bonds with Anto, Nina, Alex, Ifu or Cee-C.
In that regards, her strategy appears to be akin to Nina’s as both rely heavily on their male partner to validate their presence in the House. Like Nina, Bambam seemed to have enjoyed the wallpaper flower status conferred to her by virtue of her alliance with an alpha male. It is only when Biggie gave her the Secret Task to steal Anto’s baby doll that it brought life back into her.
The next daring act Bambam has posed was to hide Ifu’s Roc Da Mat cap on Biggie’s instructions again, a costly action that Ifu has not digested yet.
Why so Silent?
It is true that Bambam’s voice is purely hypnotising, and she could use it more often to express herself beyond her musings with Rico. Under the Bamco nickname, Bambam and Rico have been seen laughing and holding open-heart conversations that she and Teddy A don’t have.
With his easy-going and non-judgemental personality, it is easy to see why Rico has become her only relationship outside the Bamteddy couple. She doesn’t engage further with other guys beyond the strict necessary.
True Colours
Perhaps it was a matter of time for her to show her true colours, and it is hoped that Bambam will let her true self shine into the House now that she has secured the Head of House throne.
What do you think it will take for Bambam to rise into herself?

In light of the ceremony, Senator Dino Melaye took to his Instagram to share his opinions about how the event turned out, comparing it with Nigeria’s lowkey celebration under her present admin.
I feel sad and ashamed this morning as I physically see the cultural and national demonstration of love, unity and purpose exhibited by Ghanaians here at the Black Star Square in Accra- Ghana as Ghana celebrate their 61st independence and 25 years of uninterrupted Democracy. It is sad that My President and eminent Nigerians watch this glamour and respect for heritage which Nigeria as Regional Champions lost years ago. We have stop celebrating anything in Nigeria. I.e Independece day, Democracy day and Children’s day.
Our Independence Day is now a low key event in the Presidential Villa. The Question is how did we get here and why did we get here! We are here president and citizens of Nigeria clapping for our’younger” brother Nation Ghana! What a shame. The reasons for the fear of National celebrations are the colossal injustices in the land. We as leaders at all levels must be fair and just to all. As long as we twist justice and flow in the gown of injustice and hypocrisy we will never openly celebrate like Ghana is doing today. We must decide to re-think and re-build.
Altogether we have failed. We must bring back our long lost reputation. As a child I always look forward to celebrations like this. What will my children and their generation look out for. God will ask us all, leaders of Nigeria our roles in getting to this abysmal level. Hope Mr President and all of us present in Accra today will learn a huge lesson from Ghana. Congratulations Ghana, Africa is proud of you.

The driver of a commercial vehicle became a lone casualty of an accident after he sacrificed his life to save his passengers.

The bus he drove was conveying passengers from Delta to Lagos state when it collided with a heavy duty trailer and the driver died on the spot.
Days ago, a Nigerian singer on Facebook, with name, Sandra Sabriel Ifudu narrated how a Taxify driver almost kidnaped her after she ordered his ride.
She took to Facebook to share that the driver waited outside her gate till 04:00am to kidnap her just because the fee for the ride which she transferred to him didn’t reflect in his bank account.
Is Taxify no longer safe for women to use? This idiot of a driver by name Izedomni dropped me off in my house last night, waited outside my gate till 4am in the morning, then came into my compound to kidnap me. According to him,the money I transferred to him ‘has not entered’,therefore I should follow him to d ATM by 4am! to confirm. If his intentions were pure, why didn’t he wait till day break? Why ask me to follow him out at that time? If this is not an attempt to kidnap,I don’t know what it is. The only person I blame in all these,is my neighbour that opened the gate for a total stranger at 4am!
Philomina Chieshe – the official of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), who weeks back claimed that the board’s N36million was swallowed by a snake, has retracted her statement.
Chieshe, who works as a clerk at the JAMB office in Markurdi, Benue state, had initially told top officials of the examination body that a “mysterious snake” swallowed the money gotten from the sale of JAMB scratch cards.
However, when she appeared before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), she confessed that the money was collected by one Samuel Umoru, who’s her superior.
A fact sheet released by the Antigraft agency indicated that Chieshe was first quizzed on February 16th 2017 and she made additional statements on April 7 and 13 2017, May 30, 2017 and June 28, 2017.
Philomina Chieshe, the lady in the eye of the Naira eating snake storm in JAMB, has been singing before the EFCC. And, contrary to her claim before the leadership of the examination body that the N36 million proceed from sale of scratch cards were eaten up by a snake, Chieshe told operatives of the anti- graft agency that the money was collected piecemeal from her by her coordinator, Mr. Samuel Sale Umoru. In one of the statements she volunteered to the EFCC, Chieshe, who is a clerk in the Makurdi office of JAMB, revealed that the Coordinator usually asked her to withdraw proceeds of the sale of the Scratch Cards from her account in two new generation banks. This money I withdrew, the coordinator used it for the office and some time for himself. She claimed that she had been warning Umoru that it was improper to use the money for miscellaneous expenses in the office or for private purposes but he would not listen. She also claimed that Umoru was in the habit of drawing IOU from the proceeds of the sale of the cards without reimbursing her. Some of the withdrawals which she claimed were at the behest of the coordinator included the N340,000 withdrawn on May 5 and 26, 2014 with ATM card. She also disclosed that she used her ATM card to withdraw N120,000 for the coordinator between June 17 and 18, 2014. “He instructed me to withdraw N640,000, using my card between June 30, 2014 and July 7, 2014.”
An EFCC official who spoke to The Nation, said
“The investigating team had verified the withdrawals after a careful analysis of the statements of account of the suspect. Mr. Umoru had also been arrested and questioned about claims by Chieshe. Umoru did not deny the allegations.
He was however released on administrative bail but had been reporting monthly to the anti- graft agency. The interesting aspect of the disclosure is that Chieshe’s statement was obtained long before the snake and Naira swallowing testimony became public knowledge.
In all her statements before the EFCC, there was no mention of any episode of any snake and the disappearance of monies in her care. In a fact-sheet regarding the investigations, Chieshe was quoted to have said her superior — the coordinator at the Markurdi office — had asked her to withdraw the N36 million.”
The suspect told the antigraft agency that she had been warning Umoru “that it was improper to use the money for miscellaneous expenses in the office or for private purposes but he would not listen.”
Other JAMB officials being investigated include Tanko Labaran who could not account for N23 million from sale of scratch cards at the Nasarawa office, and Yakubu Jakada who is yet to explain the whereabouts of N20 million e-facilities cards sold in Kano office.
All the suspects have been released on bail pending the outcome of the antigraft agency’s investigations.

“Only few people are happy with the marriage of a single zawarawa because they are just one. We heard the eastern, the western, the southern and the northern entry points to Kano are all shut for the marriage of a single ‘zawarawa’ couple.
“This shows a sharp departure from the Kwankwasiyya ideology in Kano State. Today, Kano was at a standstill because of this marriage.
“We also heard a lot of people from other places that are less busy have abandoned their duties to attend the wedding. I also heard this event involving a single couple has made lot of people doing their legitimate businesses remain indoors.
“All these show difference between honesty and dishonesty, between light and darkness, between mass wedding of a thousand couple and that of a single couple,” he said.
The Big Brother Naija Housemates have been in the house for weeks now, without access to social media, and of course not knowing what is going on in the outside world.
Yes, they know there are cameras everywhere, but then, they won’t know when they’re captured doing “something odd”.
Evicted housemate, Angel, went home with his strategic partner, Ahneeka, having had the lowest vote during the live eviction show on Sunday.
Angel weeks ago was caught on camera scratching his bum, and immediately smelling the hands.. Yes, it’s a “natural thing”, many say it is reflex.. But then, you don’t wanna be “caught” or “seen” doing it publicly, not to talk of live TV.
In a new interview, Angel has said he regrets scratching his butt and smelling it, while tagging it as a disgusting habit.
Black Panther lead actor, Chadwick Boseman has revealed that classic Hollywood star, Denzel Washington paid for his acting classes while he was still a student at Oxford University.
Boseman said the tuition was paid via a scholarship program for a summer class he took in school. Speaking on Jimmy Fallon’s show, Boseman said veteran, Phylicia Rashad taught the acting class and got some famous donors to help the college kids get overseas:
I didn’t have money to pay for this, and so she [Rashad] got a few of her friends together and, you know, they paid for us to go. I didn’t know at first–when I came back–and I’ve basically been holding this secret my whole career, [but] when I came back I got a beneficiary letter. And it said, ‘Denzel Washington paid for you.’ You know, and I was like, ‘What?’
Boseman continued;
“I’m sure he has no idea. It was random. I couldn’t wait to write my thank-you letter! I’ve been waiting to meet him, so I can tell him.
The weird thing that happened is, I did the interview, and just before the movie came out we did the NY premiere and he came and I met him. Before the article came out, so I actually lived up to what I originally wanted to do.
Boseman said Denzel joked about it when they finally met,
“Oh, so that’s why I’m here – you owe me money!” Washington told Boseman. “I came to collect!”
Denzel Washington was nominated for the Oscars in the Actor in a leading role category, for the movie, “Roman J Israel, Esq” but lost the award to Gary Oldman, the leading actor in movie, “Darkest Hour”.

Meanwhile, one of the evicted housemate, Comedian Dee-One has described Nina, Miracle, Tobi and BamBam as fake.
Speaking with NAIJ TV, Dee-One identified Ifu Ennada, Angel, Cee-C as those not faking their personality.
He said, “The ones being real in the house, we know them. The likes of Miracle, Nina, Tobi, BamBam, are all fake. Miracle and Nina are just fake. For example, both of them pray before they sleep.
“After prayer, they then start kissing. Are they inviting God or devil into their union? Ifu Ennada is just being herself. Bitto is a smart person; Rico is a cool guy, Teddy A is real.
DeeOne
“Despite the fight, Angel is a correct guy I really like him. Cee-C is my person. She is not a terrible person. Anto doesn’t talk much because she primarily grew up in the U.S.A. Alex is herself a 100% she has fallen in love with Leo.
“Leo is just looking at her. He has no business being in the BBNaija house, he is so brilliant. Ahneeka really doesn’t do anything in the house apart from treat her pimples. I think she is also very brilliant.”
A teenager didn’t know she was having a baby until she was in labour because she hadn’t shown any signs of pregnancy.
Charlotte Thomson, now 21, of Newcastle upon Tyne, had regular periods and was still slipping into her size 8 dresses so had no idea she was expecting.
It wasn’t until she took herself to hospital with bleeding and painful stomach cramps that medics told her she was about to give birth.
Daughter Molly, now two, arrived two hours later.
Nursery nurse Charlotte said: ‘My stomach was completely flat, and I’d been having regular periods so it was such a shock when I found out.
‘I didn’t believe that I was actually pregnant until I gave birth. It was scary becoming a first-time mum with no warning.
‘But I wouldn’t change Molly for the world, and I feel so lucky.’
Charlotte, who fell pregnant with an ex-boyfriend, said she only put on 3lbs during her pregnancy and had felt more tired than usual but put the symptoms down to her party girl lifestyle.
‘I thought it was from going out all the time,’ she said. ‘I still managed to get into my clothes so I just ignored it.’
In December 2015 Charlotte woke in agony at 2.30am and realised she was bleeding profusly.
She said: ‘I took some paracetamol and hoped that it would blow over.
‘Instead, the pain just got worse and I was in agony. An hour later I felt like I was going to be sick so I ran to the toilet and saw that my underwear was full of blood.
‘I had just finished my period so I was really scared. I knew something was seriously wrong and booked a taxi to the hospital.’
Nurses at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital examined Charlotte and told her she needed to speak to a midwife.
‘I told them that there had to be a mistake,’ Charlotte said. ‘I’d had no symptoms.’
But ten minutes later, a midwife performed an ultrasound and told Charlotte she was nine months pregnant and in labour.
Charlotte continued: ‘I panicked that I wasn’t prepared and hadn’t bought any baby clothes. I was so worried about what my parents would say when they found out that I was having a baby.’
At 4.30am, a nurse phoned Charlotte’s parents, Lynne Thomson, 50, a domestic cleaner, and Vincent Thomson, 50, an engineer, and told them their daughter was pregnant.
Charlotte said: ‘My parents thought that I was only a few weeks along and having a miscarriage.
‘I burst into tears when they arrived, and told them I had no idea that I was pregnant. They were really supportive and excited about their first grandchild.’
Two hours later, Charlotte gave birth to Molly.
Charlotte said: ‘As soon as I held Molly, I loved her so much. She was perfect and we had an instant bond.’
Doctors explained that she’d had no bump because Molly had been tucked up underneath her ribs.
Charlotte said: ‘It’s crazy to think that I’d been carrying a baby all that time.
‘When Mum called my work to explain that I’d had a baby, they were gobsmacked as they’d seen me the day before with no baby bump at all.’
Charlotte and Molly were discharged from hospital two days later – after Lynne rushed out to buy nappies and baby clothes.
Charlotte says: ‘My friends didn’t believe me until they saw a picture of Molly. Luckily I’m still a size 8 and didn’t need to lose any baby weight.
‘Molly has joined the nursery that I work at so I can take her with me, which is perfect.
‘Molly’s dad is an ex who is no longer in the picture, but I have plenty of help from my parents with the baby. I’m no longer a party animal but it’s worth it to have Molly.
‘I can’t wait to tell her the story of how I discovered I was pregnant with her. Nothing Molly could ever do in the future would surprise me as much as the day she was born.’
