Nigerian lady who married man 7 days after she showed interest speaks

Few days ago, a Nigerian man, Chidimma Amedu went viral after he got married to a lady he met on Facebook, just 7 days before the wedding.

Now, his bride who apparently, dropped a comment on his advert where he was searching for a wife to marry, has spoken to BBC.

Read Below the story by BBC;

A Nigerian man, Chidimma Amedu has taken Facebook post to a whole new level when he posted an unusual advert on 30 December 2017 asking any woman interested in being his wife to reply.

He also said he was ready to tie the nuptials knots on 6 January, 2018.

“Am of age and I am ready to say I do and am wasting no time.

“Send in your applications – the most qualified will be married on January 6, 2018. Application closes 12 midnight, 31/12/2017,” Amedu posted.

He then followed up with subsequent posts.

“Am serious about this oh and don’t say you did not see it on time. Good luck.”

He received a couple of responses, but one from a certain Sophy Ijeoma was the one which caught his attention.

“Am interested, just DM me…lols,” her post read.

At first, she thought it was a joke and she simply replied to keep the thread flowing.

“Chidimma placed the advert initially as a joke but became optimistic when Sophy said she was interested”

A direct message from him to her inbox, followed by a Facebook call, would change her life’s trajectory.

Two days after their first conversation, he travelled some 500km (300 miles) from his home in the Nigerian capital of Abuja, to Enugu in the east where she lived.

She had been waiting for him outside a retail store and in true fairy-tale style, “it was love at first sight”, she recalled.

“He is the most handsome man I’ve ever met and I liked him instantly.”

After two hours of “awkward” conversation, he asked her to go to meet his uncle, who incidentally is also resident in Enugu.

Asked what was going through her mind at the time, she said she thought it was all a bit of a joke, but she was excited about it and thought Chidimma was quite an interesting character.

“We got to the uncle’s house and he said: ‘Uncle, meet the woman I want to marry.’”

Like Chidimma, his family don’t seem to hang about when it comes to getting things done, because the uncle gave his approval.

The couple had been friends on Facebook for over a year but had never spoken to each other before the advert

Getting family backing for your choice of spouse is an essential part of Igbo culture.

Whereas picking your future wife from dozens of respondents to a Facebook marriage advert and marrying her in six days is decidedly not.

At this point in their day-old relationship, it was beginning to dawn on Sophy that this fellow was not playing, but how do you commit to marrying someone you only just met?

She would not comment on whether they had even shared as much as a kiss at that point, but maintained she was captivated by how focused and determined her new fiancé was.

“When I saw him for the first time, I definitely found him attractive, but what I didn’t know was how serious he was about marrying me.

“It was after we met the uncle and his wife, that I realised that this could actually happen and I wanted it.”

It was now her turn to worry about how she was going to get the approval of her family to marry a guy she had just met on Facebook.

But they had momentum going for them. Having met and fallen in love at first sight, or first message, if you like, and getting Chidimma’s uncle’s approval, the couple decided to complete the cycle by visiting Sophy’s family the same day.

Approval from the family is essential in Igbo tradition.

Sophy recounted how she relayed the information to her mother. Her dad had passed away, and her mum said she did not have the final word in terms of giving approval for her to be married, so it was up to Sophy’s elder brother to give his blessings.

It would appear the odds were firmly in their favour as Sophy’s brother gave his blessings too.

So after a few questions from her brother, it was official – Chidimma and Sophy were engaged to be married in six days.

Last year Chidimma was engaged to another woman and the wedding was scheduled for December, but the relationship fell apart in March leaving him dejected.

As December approached, the disappointment of not being able to fulfil his dream of getting married made him put up the post, he said.

“I had the desire to get married, I had a date in mind, but no bride, so I decided to place an advert as a joke, but I was open and up for it.”

Asked whether she knew about his earlier engagement and her thoughts on how this seemingly rushed marriage might be seen as a rebound, Sophy dismissed any suggestions that her relationship was not well thought through.

“I don’t care about that – when you see what you want, you go for it.”

They had been friends on Facebook for more than a year, but had never met or spoken to each other until the advert.

“Am interested, just DM me…lols” was all it took for the union to be formed.

Sophy admitted her friends were sceptical about the whole thing, while some are still in disbelief, but as she said: “When you see the one, you will know he is the one”.

Happily ever after?

They got married on 6 January in a traditional Igbo ceremony, and posted photos of their wedding day on Facebook of course – to the amusement of the social media community.

Chidimma put up a post saying people may have thought he had been joking but he clearly wasn’t.

As can be expected, there were mixed reactions, but mainly a lot of support for the couple.

They hope to have a church wedding in April and perhaps a honeymoon somewhere nice, he said.

Libya returnees reject N1,000 transport fare, says money is too small

Nigerian migrants recently repatriated from Libya on Wednesday protested against the N1,000 transport fare allegedly given to them by the Edo State Government.

Over 900 returnees have been received by the state government at a temporary shelter in Benin since January 8, 2018.

Some of the returnees, who were moved to Benin after their arrival in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, were seen grumbling about the amount, which they claimed was too small to take them home.

They lamented that their colleagues who were moved to Benin from Lagos State got over N40,000, while those from the Port Harcourt centre were allegedly told that they would be catered for by the Edo State Government.

The angry returnees also threatened to stage a peaceful protest at the Palace of Oba of Benin and the Government House but were dissuaded by some security personnel who intervened.

One of the returnees, Joyce Richard, lamented that the amount was inadequate to take her to her hometown in Orhionmwon Local Government Area. She, therefore, appealed to the state government to increase the allowance.

It was, however, learnt that the development compelled the government to later increase the amount to N5,000.

Reacting, the Chairman of the state Task Force on Anti-Hhuman Trafficking, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe, blamed the protest on misinformation.

Omorogbe, who is also the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, explained that those who were received from Lagos came on a different arrangement.

According to her, the Lagos batch was provided with the sum of N41,000 on arrival by the European Union, through the International Organisation for Migration.

She also confirmed that the Port Harcourt batch had yet to be provided with any allowance, even as she added that the state had a stipend of N20,000 each for the returnees for three months.

While describing the protest as unexpected, Omorogbe said that the N5,000 was approved by the state government to enable them to get to their various destinations.

According to her, “What we have been able to do now is because of the proactive nature of the state government because no amount has actually been approved to be given to returnees at this stage.

“This amount (N5,000) is not a stipend but a realisation that the government is determined to make it (intervention) succeed.

“You cannot expect people to trek to their various homes, as many of them do not live in Benin. As such, we were directed to make a provision for the N5,000 transport fare that was not there before now.”

“Dear Funke Akindele, thanks for making Nigerians proud, don’t mind Buhari”

In as much as this country is being led by men and women who with their actions and utterances try to wipe this country out of the world’s map, there are other people who insist that the country must be on the map of the world.

Dear Funke Akindele

Funke Akindele 22 />

Funke Akindele Bello!!

You have bellowed your name into the ears of Africa and now, woman’s international.

You know, things like this makes me generally emotional and mushy.

I mean, this is a stark case of grace, hard work and drive.

When I saw the news that you are making an appearance in an Avengers movie, I was elated. For a while, I tried to sink that in.

When you started the Jenifas diary, I had people who said that you are all about scattering good English and poisoning our generation with bad English.

I laughed because they were mostly people that voted for Buhari.

I mean, what else can come out from their brains except worm infested ideas and thoughts?

I am happy that you are a source of pride for we Nigerians.

You have done for us what Buhari and his gang haven’t done.

Putting us on the map for a good reason.

Wizkid and Davido have done theirs and are still doing theirs.

Great day to be a Nigerian!

Let’s keep working and ignore Buhari.

Omoku massacre

The 32-year-old suspect, Desmond Okotubo, who is a father of three, hails from Egbenma in Unelga Local Government Area of Rivers State.

He told newsmen in Abuja that, “the arrest and humiliation of the mother of Don Waney, coupled with the destruction of Waney’s mansions was the main reason for the New Year attack in Omoku.”

He also revealed, “that the plan to invade Omoku was hatched in Owerri, Imo State,” adding that Omoku vigilante group members were their original targets and not church worshippers.

Omoku massacre

Okotubo further explained that their decision to vent their anger on the worshippers came when they could not track down the vigilante group members.

He said vigilante members were instrumental to the arrest of Don Waney’s mother and tracing of his mansions for destruction by government.

“Only fools say there is no God” — Young Nigerian guy says as he survives stray bullet that hit him while he was asleep

A young guy, identified as Bright Ugochukwu narrowly escaped death last December.

Ugo took to his Facebook page to share his testimony on how a stray bullet came from nowhere and hit him in his left chest very close to his heart in his bedroom, while he was asleep.

He wrote;

“Only fools says there is no God. Brethren, please follow me in thanking God for saving my life when the devil tries to snatch it away from me. As God has promised never to allow His children to be defeated.

The devil wanted to end my life before the year runs off in 2017 but as usual God is always there to fight and protect me.

Around 11pm on 15th December 2017 after some usual activities at the church, i lay down on my bed to sleep, suddenly a bullet pierced through the zinc and pvc and landed on my left chest close to the heart.

I hardly breathe at that moment, I just remain calm and continue to reassure my self that nothing will happen to me and my mother started calling out for all the saints in heaven to intervene on my behalf.

It seems they held an emergency meeting for my sake and started praying and pleading to God to save me. God didn’t forsake me at this time, he answered my prayer and all the prayers offered for my sake.

Chest X-ray revealed that the bullet didn’t touch the heart, no ribs were damaged and no fractures seen. I pray that He continue to heal and protect me and my family and also the people that have trust in Him. Glory be to God now and forever more …AMEN”

Ex-Super Eagles player, Oruma, duped by his pastor, suffers relapse of emotional trauma

Former Super Eagles midfielder Wilson Oruma is now said to be in a status of mental disorder six years after he was reportedly defrauded by a clergyman.

Oruma was one of the Nigerian football stars who made millions in the round leather game, but he was reported to have been duped by a clergyman and some fake oil businessmen.

The 41-year-old midfielder who played alongside Austin Jay Jay Okocha and former Arsenal striker Kanu Nwankwo in the Super Eagles retired from football in 2010.

He was said to have invested a whopping sum of N1.2 billion without proper consultation after retiring from football and he consequently lost the investment.

His close friend Emakpor Dibofun has been reported to have told Complete Sports that the former Super Eagles star is yet to recover from the fortune he lost to fraudsters.

“Wilson Oruma hasn’t really recovered from the emotional disorder which he suffered after he was duped.

“He has been to several places in search of a lasting solution, but it gets worse after a bit of improvement.” he said.

The report also stated that many of Wilson Oruma’s former teammates at the Super Eagles have been contacted, and there are plans for his condition to be resuscitated.

Wilson Oruma starred for RC Lens, Nancy, Samsunspor, Nimes, Servette, Sochaux, Marseille and Guingamp, and Kavala FC of Greece before he retired at the age of 33 on November 26, 2010.

He also featured for Nigeria’s U-17, U-23 and the senior national team winning the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 1993, the Olympic gold in 1996 and two bronze medals at the African Cup of Nations in 2002 and 2006.

Angry Nigerian father calls out Private schools for giving students too much homework

An Angry Nigerian dad took to his Facebook page, “Esv Jibrilla Madu Gadzama” to call out teachers in private schools and accused them of shifting the responsibility of teachers to parents, by way of giving them too much homeworks.

Below is what he wrote on Facebook;

FRAUD BY NIGERIAN PRIVATE SCHOOLS
HOMEWORK! HOMEWORK! AND MORE HOMEWORK FOR PARENTS.

It has become clear to many parents that the task of teaching their children has been shifted to them despite the huge fees they keep doling out to private schools.

Children come home with homework that requires over 6 hours to complete and the children are usually clueless about the topic. Clearly some of these topics were never introduced in class and the burden of breaking in the topic is shifted to the parents.

In some cases a topic is given a very brief introduction in class then a slew of tasks is bundled as assignments and becomes the parent’s responsibility to ground the child in the subject.

Nigerian parents remain docile. They know they are being shafted but continue to take it.

Some schools try to drive the narrative that all other kids are up to par and only yours is finding it difficult. Bull! The teachers are trained to sell you that line (the only training they seem to receive). This belief gives every parent a catch-up mentality. So you either enroll in their “extra lessons ” or you find yourself doing homework for your children everyday.

This phenomenon (fraud) was prevalent in China until parents got together and fought against it.
After paying exorbitant school fees, the schools pay peanuts to the teachers. Some private school teachers in

Nigeria consider themselves unemployed because their remuneration is so small!
They can’t be bothered to be dedicated. Besides many just simply are untrained.
The private schools have found a solution: transfer the teaching tasks to the parents!

Parents must individually reject this fraud!
Insist on only one assignment per subject per week. If the schools won’t comply then we must refuse to pay school fees this January!

Insist that teaching must be in the classroom! Not through ‘extra lessons ‘!

It is a big lie that every other child except yours is doing well! They only exploit your competitive spirit!

Enough is enough! Teach our children or we will not pay the school fees! If we are doing all the work we might as well enroll them in the LEA public schools!

Stop sleeping with your cellphone – Experts Warns

Cell phones have long surpassed being just a device to make calls and receive messages. Our dependency on its numerous features has got us enslaved.

Today, almost all of us can’t survive without our indispensable communication gadget. And it has gone a step further, whether single or not, mobile phones have becoming a sleeping companion to people globally. There’s hardly any of us who goes to bed without it.

Despite health warnings of radiation, we still keep it next to our faces near the pillow or at the most, within an arm’s reach on the bed side table. Well, it’s time to change all of that…

Health warnings

Recently, the California Department of Health warned that the public need to keep their mobile phones several feet away from them to reduce health risks and radiation exposure. The state released guidance for reducing exposure to cell phone radiation, surrounded by mounting evidence that mobile use may be linked to cancer, attention, mental health and reproductive health issues. Using low frequency radio signals to transmit information, cell phones put us at risk of unhealthy radiation, especially when streaming or downloading large files.
Though research has not definitively proven cell phone radiation is dangerous, there have been enough studies linking the two to exercise caution, especially for children.

The California statewide notice issued warnings that citizens should make some distance between their mobiles and their bodies. The radio frequency (RF) energy cell phones use to transmit information are at the bottom of the radiation totem poll, but research suggests that our frequent, close-range exposure to cell phones may be enough to endanger us.

“Keeping a phone directly on the body has never been a good idea,” says Dr Devra Davis of the Environmental Health Trust. In fact, cell phone makers themselves seem to agree. Apple, for example, includes an ‘RF exposure’ notice in the iPhone’s settings.

Health studies have shown evidence that mobile phone exposure may cause tumours in the brain or ears, where the body is frequently in contact with the gadget. Though research on RF’s effects on children specifically is fairly limited, many psychologists have already warned that cell phone use may be linked to poorer attention, mental health and sleep for adolescents.

International studies “have shown that men who keep their phone in their pockets the longest have lowest sperm count, with most damage,” says Dr Davis. “Many people who keep their phones in their pockets for hours a day, especially in the summer with thinner exposures will be far greater,” she adds.

Contemporary cell phone signals use “the weakest signals, but strength of the signals is not an issue when comes to biological effect. It’s not the power, it’s the irregular nature of signal,” says Davis.

An expert, Dr Ramakant Deshpande, oncologist, Asian Cancer Institute, says, “Ionisation can impact children; studies have shown it’s effects on the central nervous system is higher. Children have greater exposure to cellphones and this needs to be reduced to avoid any long term health hazards.”

Radiation from cellphones have the potential to cause cancer; there has been an increase in benign tumours but not all cancers. Cellphones are very useful in daily life and it is not possible to completely stay away from them. It is suggested that a balance should be maintained and cellphones have to be used with care and precaution, cautions Dr Deshpande.

Reproductive health

Dr Bandita Sinha, gynaecologist and infertility specialist, World of Women clinic, says that cell phone radiation can be harmful and will affect fertility, although there are no studies that prove the statistics of this radiation and its impact. However, it is advisable to keep cell phones several feet away from one’s body.

If cell phones are kept closer to one’s body for a longer period, it can have harmful effects. “Stop listening to Nigerian music” – Huddah Monroe Tells Other African Countries

Delectable Kenyan Socialite and former Big Brother Africa contestant, Huddah Monroe has called on other Africans to boycott Nigerian music as a whole.

Huddah wrote on her Insta story; “Nigerians don’t even listen and support other African artists music unless it’s collaboration which artists from other countries pay so much for them to be in their songs.”

This apparently, is in line with Shatta Wale’s rant about the secondary role artistes from other African countries are made to play in the continental music scene.

Huddah Monroe, in her post, added that “we the rest of Africa should just boycott (their music)” asking them to be their brothers keeper.

She wrote in full: ““Nigerians don’t even listen and support other African artists music unless it’s collaboration which artists from other countries pay so much for them to be in their songs. We the rest of AFRICA we should just boycott. Be your brothers keeper.”

“Don’t blame Buhari, Herdsmen killed over 756 under Jonathan” — Presidency

The Presidency on Wednesday said it was unfair for people to blame Fulani herdsmen killings on president Buhari as over 756 people were killed by herdsmen in two years under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said in a video he posted on his Facebook page;

“Something that is disturbing that I have heard about it is linking those developments to the fact that a Fulani man is President and so, he is brooking such kind of evil acts.

“I think that is very unkind. And I will try to back my position with statistics.

“In 2013, particularly, there were nine cases of herdsmen invading communities in Benue state alone and more than 190 people were killed.

“In 2014, there were about 16 of such tragic developments with more than 231 people killed. And then there was a change of government in May 2015.

“But between January and May 2015, there were six attacks which left about 335 people dead.

“Now, the question is, during that period, did we have a Fulani president?”

Therefore, let nobody say that all this is happening because we have a Fulani president. We have had many Fulani presidents in the past and this issue of herders and local communities at loggerheads has predated this government.

“But I will just like to appeal to Nigerians that the Muhammadu Buhari government is determined to crack this issue, is determined to get to the bottom of it and it will get done,” he added.

200 Migrants drown in Mediterranean Sea

200 Migrants drown

It was a tragic start to New Year for migrants from Nigeria and other countries as hundreds of them crossing to Italy and Spain were feared dead in the Mediterranean Sea, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has said.

IOM’s Public Information Officer in Libya, Christine Petré, reported that the boats carrying the migrants departed from the coastal towns of Azzawiyah and Al Khums in Libya.

“Most of the survivors hail from African countries, including Senegal, Mali and Nigeria. The Libyan Cost Guard reported that eight were from Bangladesh while two were from Pakistan,” Petré said.

According to IOM, and a report released by Libya’s Coast Guard, about 100 people on board remain missing.

The UN migration agency said its officials were present at the disembarkation point in Tripoli and provided the survivors with food and water.

Othman Belbeisi, Chief of IOM Libya Mission, said on Wednesday that about 200 migrants or refugees had died or gone missing in the Mediterranean Sea with up to 100 unaccounted for since Saturday.

“It’s very distressing that during the first 10 days of 2018 we have seen close to 800 migrants rescued or intercepted off the Libyan coast, with more lives lost at sea.

“More has to be done to reduce irregular unsafe movements of people along the Central Mediterranean route,” Belbeisi said.

According to him, the tragedy came at a time when Mediterranean migrants’ death dropped sharply as IOM recorded only 26 on the Mediterranean Sea lanes in December 2017.

Belbeisi said while January 2017 had witnessed some 254 deaths, this week’s reports suggest that the start of 2018 may be even deadlier.

IOM reported on Tuesday that 81 Mediterranean Sea deaths of migrants or refugees were recorded in the first eight days of the year with five in Western Mediterranean waters off Spain and Morocco and the rest between Italy and Libya.

In the latest, and third deadliest, shipwreck in the Mediterranean since Saturday, the Libyan Coast Guard rescued three rubber boats with 279 migrants made up of 19 women, 243 men, 13 boys and four girls, in an operation lasting at least 12 hours.

The UN migration agency said it continued to provide support and direct humanitarian assistance to the survivors of this latest tragedy, many of whom now are at Libya’s Tajoura detention centre.
