Yesterday, a mild drama happened in Cross River state, after a lecturer was arrested yesterday, for inviting a female student he was assigned to supervise her final year project to a hidden hotel in Barracks Road, Igoli Ogoja, Cross River state.

According to what we know, the lecturer works at the College Health Technology, Iboko, Yala LGA of Cross Rivers State.

Apparently, he is the Head of Departmento f the Laboratory Servces Department of General Hospital Ogoja Cross River State.

A surprising new scientific research has revealed that dead people continue to be conscious even after they have been declared dead by medics.

Some report having seen light at the end of a tunnel, while others claim to have floated above their body, watching as medics save their lives.

But the reality of near-death experiences has always been debated.

Now scientists have discovered that a person’s consciousness continues to work after the body has stopped showing signs of life – meaning they have awareness of their own death.

And there is evidence to suggest someone who has died may even hear their own death being announced by medics.

The findings echo the plot line of the new Hollywood re-make of 90s cult horror Flatliners, starring Ellen Page.

In the film a group of young doctors embark on a dangerous experiment by taking turns to chemically induce their heart to stop and flatline to find out exactly what happens in the afterlife.

A team from New York University Langone School of Medicine investigated the very same question through twin studies in Europe and the US of people who have suffered cardiac arrest and ‘come back’ to life, in the largest study of its kind.

Study author Dr Sam Parnia told Live Science: ‘They’ll describe watching doctors and nurses working and they’ll describe having awareness of full conversations, of visual things that were going on, that would otherwise not be known to them.’

He said these recollections were then verified by medical and nursing staff who reported their patients, who were technically dead, could remember details of what they were saying.

Death of brain cells can take hours.

Medically speaking, doctors define death based on when the heart no longer beats, which then immediately cuts off blood supply to the brain.

‘Technically, that’s how you get the time of death – it’s all based on the moment when the heart stops,’ explained Dr Sam Parnia.

‘Once that happens, blood no longer circulates to the brain, which means brain function halts almost instantaneously.
‘You lose all your brain stem reflexes – your gag reflex, your pupil reflex, all that is gone.’

The brain’s cerebral cortex – which is responsible for thinking and processing information from the five senses – also instantly flatlines, says Dr Parnia. This means that within 2 to 20 seconds, no brainwaves will be detected on an electric monitor.

This sparks a chain reaction of cellular processes that will result in the death of brain cells. However, this can take hours after the heart has stopped, he explained.

And performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) that hasn’t successfully revived a patient can still result in sending some blood to the brain – about 15 percent of what it requires to function normally.

But brain cell death is still happening, just at a slightly slower rate, he said.

A Frenchman and a Tunisian woman were convicted Wednesday on appeal in Tunis for “public indecency” after an altercation with police who arrested the couple while they were hugging in a car.

The couple, who maintain that they were not kissing, were given a lighter sentence than the original term handed out at their October 4 trial, after widespread outrage on social media and in the press over the incident.

The man was handed four months in prison for “public indecency” and “refusing to obey the police”, with the woman given a two-month sentence on the first charge only.

“It’s an independent decision,” a spokesman for the public prosecutors’ office, Sofiene Sliti told AFP.
“What has been reported nationally and internationally is wrong — they weren’t arrested for a kiss, the couple was naked,” he added.

At the hearing Wednesday, the woman collapsed into tears when the court president read a police description saying a sexual act was in process when the couple were stopped on October 1 in a suburb of Tunis.

The woman said that her friend had simply taken her into his arms when the plainclothes police stopped them and made them get out of the car.

The Frenchman confirmed to the judge that he had tried to film the police to make a complaint about their behaviour.

A dozen defence lawyers had been arguing for an acquittal for the couple. The majority of the lawyers were working for free on the case, which has triggered an uproar in Tunisia over morality campaigns and police behaviour.

The defence pointed to numerous flaws in the case, including hearings in Arabic which the Frenchman, who is of Algerian origin, did not understand.

“It is normal that he reacts badly when his fundamental rights were being violated,” said lawyer Ghazi Mrabet, whose client is accused of intimidating police.

He pointed to what he said was “bad faith” on the part of the police, who he said were looking for revenge after being implicated over their handling of the case.

“This case highlights key problems with the judicial system and the police. Abuse of powers… lack of respect for citizens and their rights, attacks on individual liberty,” said former deputy Nadia Chaabane, who is a member of a group to support the couple.

“The problem is that we have judges now who accept all these breaches and procedural problems,” she said before the judgement.

Donald Trump told the pregnant widow of a US soldier killed in combat that her husband “knew what he signed up for” moments before she greeted his coffin.

Lance Sergeant David Johnson, 25, was among four elite special forces killed when their patrol was ambushed by Islamic militants in Niger.

The US President has been criticised for failing to speak about the incident, amid increasing reports that the mission was flawed.

Trump failed to meet Sgt Johnson’s coffin when it first arrived back on American soil on Saturday and went golfing instead.

And to add further insult, when he finally called the soldier’s widow Myeshia Johnson on Tuesday he showed a distinct lack of compassion.

Instead Trump told her: “He knew what he signed up for… but when it happens it hurts anyway”.

Minutes later, Mrs Johnson, who is expecting the couple’s third child in January, wept uncontrollably over her husband’s coffin at Miami Airport.

Her six-year-old daughter stood by her stoically in highly emotional scenes.

Following the unveiling of a huge bronze statue of President Jacob Zuma by Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha in Owerri over the weekend, Zuma, couldn’t be more proud of this feat.

Not stopping at just the statue, Okorocha also named a street after Zuma during his two-day visit to Nigeria and conferred him with a chieftancy title.

Speaking on the niceties of Okorocha, President Zuma said is speechless, adding that his visit to Nigeria was to “strengthen socio-economic relations and deepen cooperation in education.”

“I walked in here‚ as I say‚ as an ordinary freedom fighter. I’m leaving Nigeria‚ through the state of Imo‚ as a hero. What a decoration.” he said.

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has said that he owes no apology for erecting Jacob Zuma’s statue in Owerri, the State capital.

Okorocha erected a 250-metre statue of the South African President in Owerri, which received a lot of backlash by Nigerians.

However, in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to Okorocha, Sam Onwuemeodo said that they cannot be deterred by enemies of the people who are trying to discourage them from making the state open to foreign investors.

The statement reads; “And in case these “Galatians” do not know all we need to do to attract good things or investments to Imo is erecting statues, then, we have no option than to erect as many of such structures as possible.

“We owe no one apology. Rochas made a promise to open the doors of Imo to the rest of the world, for good and he is doing that and we cannot be deterred by these enemies of our people.

“If it was in the days of PDP, schools and markets would have been shut down. And roads closed because President Zuma was coming. But none of such things was done because Rochas and his government have a human face.

“The PDP for the 12 years they held sway never attracted any meaningful visitor to the State except PDP NEC members who were coming to loot the state.”

General overseer of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, Dr. David Oyedepo is of the believe that the black man’s greatest challenge is not intellectual bankruptcy, but laziness and inability to task his thinking faculty towards realising assets that will benefit his immediate environment.

Speaking at the 54th meeting of the Committee of Deans of Post Graduate Schools (CDPGS) in Nigerian Universities at CU premises, the cleric said his experiences with those in the academia shows that many of them are simply so proud of having become authority in their chosen fields.

In his words:

“Everywhere I go in Nigeria today, everybody continues to complain that things are not working; but who will start how things will work and when? That person is you and that time is now; and post graduate education should serve as a platform for inciting our students into thinking solutions. Today, it is thinkers that rule the world and we should be development-oriented in things we do.”

To make that difference, Oyedepo challenged the deans to start thinking out of the box, saying that is what would propel them to imbibe same culture into their students.

“Leadership is not being in the driver seat, but adding values. As a dean, you must start thinking what difference you are going to make in that position; what contributions in terms of innovations and feat. You have no business being in that position if you cannot make that difference that will be a reference point to your successors years after you have left.”

Further, Oyedepo suggested the ‘read thinking’; concept which according to him, combines research alongside critical thinking of solutions. Man’s biological configuration remains the same regardless of colour or height, Oyedepo argued.

He said Africa has a lot to tap from Covenant University which was birthed through indigenous thinking and currently ranks as the second best university in Nigeria just within 15 years of existence.

Malaysian police have quashed rumours that a small cat-like creature with a human head had been found in the country.

Officers were forced to deny the existence of the animal, despite videos and photographs circulating online.

State police chief Datuk Rosli Abdul Rahman said that the photographs were “untrue”.

Checks revealed the images were downloaded from the internet before it was shared on social media, claiming that the discovery was made in Pahang. “I hope the public will stop circulating news about the alleged discovery.”

The pictures are thought to be of a ‘silicon baby werewolf’ toy sold online.
