A 37-year-old Cameroonian national has died in his lover’s home in Ogboinbiri community of the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The death of the Cameroonian, identified simply as Dr Charles, a patent medicine dealer, had reportedly aroused controversy.

Two different accounts of the incident were given by residents of the community.

Some indigenes of Ogboinbiri community claimed that the Cameroonian died after an alleged sex romp with his 35-year-old lover, an indigene of the community.

But another account claimed that Charles, who was allegedly ill from an unidentified ailment, slumped as soon as he entered the house.

He reportedly died before he could be rushed to Zia-Ngo Health Centre, the only public health facility in the community.

A community source said Charles’ corpse had been deposited in the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, the state capital.

“The death of Charles is a mystery. Everyone heard that he was ill, but nobody could confirm if they had sex, which triggered the death,” the source said.

Indigenes of the community were said to have reported the matter at the Oporoma Police Division.

It was learnt that the Divisional Police Officer, along with five policemen, had visited the house where the incident took place.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command, Mr. Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident.

Butswat, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the preliminary report available to the command revealed that the deceased Cameroonian died of a natural cause.

“The report indicated that he was ill and slumped. He was said to have died before getting to the community health centre,” the police spokesman said.

The manner in which Jide Tinubu, first son of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Ahmed Tinubu, died has been revealed.

According to a member of the Tinubu family, who asked not to be named because of the sensitive nature of the matter, Jide suddenly collapsed and died from what was suspected to be a heart attack around 9 pm on Tuesday.

“However, after the incidence, close family members rushed him down to hospital on Lagos Island where he was confirmed dead on arrival,” the source told journalists in Lagos

He added that the tragic news was kept secret because the father, Bola Tinubu, was in Abuja for the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of his party, the APC.

Chairman of APC in Lagos, Otunba Henry Ajomale confirmed Jide’s death in a short statement he (Ajomale) issued on Wednesday.

“It’s with regrets that I inform you of the demise of Mr. Jide Tinubu, the Son of Our dear and esteemed Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement said.

The cause of the death is unknown, but a statement by Chairman of Lagos State faction of the All Progressives Congress, APC reads:

“It’s with regrets that I inform you of the demise of Mr. Jide Tinubu, the Son of Our dear and esteemed Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu”

Late Jide was a law graduate of the University of Liverpool, England. He obtained a Masters degree in Maritime Law from the University of London and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1999.

The late lawyer had served as Promoter of TSL Limited and also worked in the Legal Department of Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited from January 2000 to September 2001.

Prior to this, he had brief stints with Cargo Maritime in Paris, France, a firm of shipbrokers that specialized in petroleum product tankers, and Ocean and Oil Services Ltd.

An Egyptian lawyer, Nabih al-Wahsh’s, has sparked outrage after he said that harassing and raping girls who wear revealing clothes such as ripped jeans is a “patrotic and national duty”.

Mr al-Wahsh made the controversial statement during a debate over a draft law on prostitution on Al-Assema TV panel show broadcast early last month.

“Girls must respect themselves so others respect them. Protecting morals is more important than protecting borders

“Are you happy when you see a girl walking down the street with half of her behind showing?”

“I say that when a girl walks about like that, it is a patriotic duty to sexually harass her and a national duty to rape her.” al-Wahsh said

These comments have prompted fury across the country as Egypt’s National Council for Women announced it plans to file a complaint against the TV channel and issued a plea for media outlets to refrain from providing a platform for individuals who incite violence against women.

The National Council also said it would be filing a complaint against Mr al-Wahsh himself and rebuked his assertion. A spokesman said in a statement:

“All the members of the council denounce and decry this statement that explicitly promotes rape and sexual harassment.”

Mr al-Wahsh, a prominent conservative has previously stated his opposition to women serving as judges, arguing that if women become judges they could also become muftis – a Muslim legal expert who has the power to give rulings on religious issues.

He said: “If we let a woman become a judge, why shouldn’t she become Sheik of Al-Azhar? Why shouldn’t she become the Mufti?

“Why don’t we all just go to Hell?! Will she issue me a fatwa while she is menstruating?!”
His latest comments come after the Egyptian capital of Cairo was last month branded the “most dangerous” megacity for women in the first international poll which looked at how women fare in cities with over 10 million people.

A study conducted by the Egyptian Centre for Women’s Rights in 2008 found that 83 per cent of women said they’d been sexually harassed, while 62 per cent of men admitted to harassing women.

A further 43 per cent of men in Egypt believe that women like the attention and they appreciate being sexually harassed.

Oluwayemisi Owolabi was sentenced to 10 years in jail yesterday by a Federal High Court, sitting in Lagos, for trafficking 330 grammes of cocaine.

Justice Rilwan Aikawa convicted and sentenced Owolabi after she pleaded guilty to one-count charge of drug trafficking preferred against her by NDLEA.

The convict’s lawyer, Morenike Ogunleye, pleaded: “The convict is a first time offender, and she is sober. She is a mother of four children, who is single-handedly taking care of them, as she has separated from her husband.”

The judge asked the prosecutor, Ibrahim, for the punishment for the crime committed as stipulated by the NDLEA Act, and the prosecutor said it is life imprisonment.

Justice Aikawa ruled: “I have listened to the plea made on her behalf by the counsel, and also listened to the prosecutor that she has no record of crime. I have to consider both her plea and what the law says about the crime.

Consequently, I hereby sentence her to 10 years imprisonment, starting from the day of her arrest, which was in May 19 at the Lagos Airport, during the outward clearance of Qatar Airways flight to Saudi Arabia.”
