Malabu Deal: Former Goodluck Jonathan To Be Summoned Over Scandal

The Nigerian House of Representatives called on former President Goodluck Jonathan over his involvement in the $1 billion Malabu Oil Deal.

A statement issued by the Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee, today, Wednesday, probing the alleged corruption, malpractices and breach of process in the award of OPL 245, Hon. Razak Atunwa, said they would write the former President to come and defend himself on the allegations.

The statement reads: “The Ad-hoc Committee on OPL 245 met to consider the progress of the Committee’s work and the next steps to be taken.

“The Committee noted that it had conducted extensive investigation into the OPL 245 saga and that it is drawing to a close.

“However, the Committee is of the view that in the interest of thoroughness, natural justice and fair play, it imperative that evidence should be taken from former President Goodluck Jonathan.

In arriving at this decision, the Committee took account of the following facts:

“Mr. Jonathan was the President at the material time the ministers brokered the deal that lead to the allegation of $1bn funds diversion.

Mr. Jonathan’s name features in the proceedings initiated by the Public Prosecutor of Milan in Italy.

“A UK court judgment in relation to an application to return part of the money being restrained, castigated the Jonathan administration as not having acted in the best interest of Nigeria in relation to the ‘deal’;

“The Attorney-General of the Federation at the material time, Mohammed Bello Adoke, has recently instituted proceedings in court wherein he pleaded that all his actions were as instructed by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

“Accordingly, pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution, the Committee has decided to request that former President Goodluck Jonathan give evidence on his role in the matter. The Secretariat will write to him asking for his response and submissions.”

court orders FG

In the judgment delivered by Justice Hadiza Shagari, yesterday in a federal high court in Lagos, court has ordered the Federal government to “immediately release to Nigerians information about the names of high ranking public officials from whom public funds were recovered and the circumstances under which funds were recovered, as well as the exact amount of funds recovered from each public official.”

Following a freedom of Information suit number: FHC/CS/964/2016 brought by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, which followed disclosure last year by the FG, of funds recovered from some high-ranking public and private individuals, the judge agreed with SERAP that “the FG has a legally binding obligation to tell Nigerians the names of all suspected looters of the public treasury past and present.”

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos today ordered the Federal Government to “immediately release to Nigerians information about the names of high ranking public officials from whom public funds were recovered and the circumstances under which funds were recovered, as well as the exact amount of funds recovered from each public official.”

The judgment was delivered today by Hon Justice Hadiza Rabiu Shagari following a Freedom of Information suit number: FHC/CS/964/2016 brought by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

In her judgment Justice Shagari agreed with SERAP that “the Federal Government has a legally binding obligations to tell Nigerians the names of all suspected looters of the public treasury past and present.”

Joined as Defendants in the suit are the Minister of Information Alhaji Lai Muhammed and the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture.

Justice Shagari also granted the following reliefs:

A DECLARATION that by virtue of the provisions of Section 4 (a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2011, the Defendants are under a binding legal obligation to provide the Plaintiff with up to date information relating to the following: To widely disseminate including on a dedicated website information about the names of high ranking public officials from whom public funds were recovered since May 2015 The circumstances under which stolen public funds were returned SERAP is now processing a certified true copy of the judgment. Timothy Adewale, SERAP deputy director who argued the case on behalf of SERAP and was in court this morning when the judgment was delivered said “This is a victory for justice, rule of law, transparency and accountability in this country.

The judgment shows the way forward in the fight against corruption and impunity of perpetrators. We will do everything within the law to ensure full compliance by President Mohammadu Buhari and Acting President Osinbajo with this landmark judgment. It would be recalled that the Ministry of Information last year published details of the recoveries, which showed that the Nigerian government successfully retrieved total cash amount N78,325,354,631.82, $185,119,584.61, £3,508,355.46 and €11, 250 between May 29, 2015 and May 25, 2016. Also released were recoveries under interim forfeiture, which were a combination of cash and assets, during the same period: N126,563,481,095.43, $9,090,243,920.15, £2,484,447.55 and €303,399.17. Anticipated repatriation from foreign countries totalled: $321,316,726.1, £6,900,000 and €11,826.11.

The ministry also announced that 239 non-cash recoveries were made during the one-year period. The non-cash recoveries are – farmlands, plots of land, uncompleted buildings, completed buildings, vehicles and maritime vessels. Subsequently, SERAP issued an FOI request and gave the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Muhammed 14 days to disclose the names of all suspected looters.

The request reads in part: “While we believe that suspects generally are entitled to be presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction, SERAP opposes blanket non-disclosure of names of high-ranking public officials from whom some of the funds were recovered.” “SERAP insists that the public interest to know is greater than any other legitimate interest that the government might wish to protect. The Nigerian government has an obligation to balance whether the risk of harm to the legitimate aim (that is secrecy of ongoing corruption investigation and presumption of innocence) from disclosure of the names of public officials is greater than the public interest in accessing the information.”

“According to public interest test, even if the government demonstrates that the publication of the names of public officials would substantially harm a legitimate interest, it is nevertheless obliged to disclose the requested information if, as it is the case here, the public interest in disclosure is sufficient enough to overweigh the harm.” “SERAP believes that the recoveries, specifically from high-ranking public officials (and not private individuals), are matters of public interest.

Publishing the names of those public officials will provide insights relevant to the public debate on the ongoing efforts to prevent and combat a culture of grand corruption and the longstanding impunity of perpetrators in the country.” “The gravity of the crime of grand corruption, the devastating effects on the socially and economically vulnerable sectors of the population, and the fact that recovery of huge funds from high-ranking public officials entrusted with the public treasury raise a prima-facie case and therefore amount to exceptional circumstances that justify naming those high-ranking officials in the public interest.”

“SERAP also argues that Nigerians are entitled to the right to truth derived from the obligations of the government to carry out an investigation of violations of human rights and crime of corruption committed within its jurisdiction; to identify, prosecute and punish those responsible; and to ensure that victims have the simple and prompt recourse for protection against violation of fundamental rights, as well as to ensure transparency in public administration.”

“SERAP believes that the right to truth allows Nigerians to gain access to information essential to the fight against corruption and in turn development of democratic institutions as well as provides a form of reparation to victims of grand corruption in the country.”

“Publishing the names of public officials involved could go a long way in preventing senior public officials from turning the public treasury into a private cashbox. SERAP argues that the public interest in publishing the names of the high-ranking government officials from whom funds were received outweighs any considerations to withhold the information, as there would be no prejudice against those whose names are published as long as the information is appropriately framed and truthful.”

“There is a general public interest in promoting transparency, accountability, public understanding and involvement in the democratic process.

While the government in some limited cases can legitimately place restrictions on the public’s right to access certain information, attempts of the Nigerian authorities to justify the total closure of information related to the names of public officials from whom funds were recovered on the basis of “ongoing criminal investigation” and “presumption of innocence goes far beyond the limitations allowed under international law, and would promote secret recoveries.”

“The information being requested is not related to detailed investigatory activities of anticorruption agencies regarding the recoveries so far made. Similarly, the mere fact that the information being requested is related to ongoing investigation does not necessarily mean that the information could not be disclosed.

In addition, governmental agency has the obligation to prove that the disclosure of the names of public officials would disrupt, impede, or otherwise harm the ongoing or pending investigations or presumption of innocence.”

falz dream girl

Lawyer cum Entertainer, Folarin Falana, better known by his stage name, Falz, who is the latest cover star for Guardian Life Magazine, talks about his opinion on the Nigerian legal system, his dream girl, dealing with fame and his alter ego.

When asked on his idea of the perfect girl, He said:

“It has less to do with the looks and more to do with the personality. So intellectually sound, really smart, very ambitious with a great sense of humour and just really caring.”

When asked how he deals with fame, He said:

“It gets very hectic and stressful, sometimes you just want to be by yourself and have a quiet day but it’s not possible. You might run into fans and you’re not having a good day, but they need to take pictures and they need to hear you talk. If you are passionate about something or if you enjoy doing something you won’t get tired of it.”

On how he developed his alter-ego:

“Initially it started off as just making fun of people and it was just something that stuck and I found that I had developed a complete alter ego.”

On starting comedy and music as part of a school group called “Schoolboys”:

We were gaining quite some ground in school. We had a few groupies…there was a time we used to steal jokes from Night Of A Thousand Laughs. We used to watch it at home and come to school to crack people up. It was the way we cracked the joke that made it funny.

‘Leave CRK In The Curriculum’, Prophet Iginla Speaks

Prophet Joshua Iginla

The Senior pastor at Champions Royal Assembly, Propeht Iginla spoke tough agaisnt Nigerian politicians over the alleged removal of Christian Religious Knowledge in the school curriculum.

At the last sunday service in his church, Prophet Iginla stated categorically that Nigeria school children have the ‘freedom of worship’ which allows them to choose any religious subject to offer in school, be it related to Islam, Christianity or any other.

Stating the impossibilIty of removing CRK, he said:

“Just like other religion, it is impossible for Nigeria to be Christianized, that’s why I’m talking as a Christian that it is impossicant for Nigeria to be Islamized. There’s freedom of worship, worship your God and I worship my God. You can’t turn me from what I know. We are born to die and preach this gospel. If it takes laying our lives to stand by the gate, we will do. It is pathetic, how can you play politics with Religion? When you want to play your politics, play it around but leave Christianity out of it. How can you take CRK from the curriculum and you are saying it doesn’t mean.”

He further address the controversial removal of CRK from curriculum to be politically-marked with church activities and established to persist speaking against it until the words stand.

“Leave CRK, return back to the status quo. We will not keep quiet until CRK is maintained as a Subject. If you want to take IRK out of it or leave it, we don’t care but leave CRK in the curriculum. If you want to play politics, leave church and mosque out of it. Do your politics the way you want to do it. There are native doctors committing all manner of atrocities but they are not being attacked. They are doing rituals and blood money, yet their shrines are not visited. When you are looking for position, you come to church to canvass for election. Leave the church out of politics and I weep for Nigeria because of our spiritual fathers. Some of them are eating the grape of corruption”, Iginla expressed.

Recall, last week, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu denied any plan from the Federal Government to remove CRK from claiming  the Christian Association of Nigeria was deceived about the purported information.

Senate asks Minister of works, Fashola to resign if the burden is too much.

The Nigerian Senate has asked the minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola (SAN), to resign his appointment if he was burdened by the volume of work at his ministry.

Babatunde Fashola

The chairman Senate committee on appropriations, Senator Danjuma Goje, made the call on Wednesday, July 5, in reaction to statement credited to Fashola where he faulted the lawmakers for unilaterally altering allocations of the ministry of works in the 2017 budget. Angered by Fashola’s comments the Senate accused the minister of misleading the public and blackmailing lawmakers over the alterations made by in the budget.

Senator Danjuma Goje, who was speaking during plenary, raised a point of order where he said Fashola was a minister and no longer a governor and should reflect that in his speech, the Punch reports.

Senator Goje said ;

“Initially, I wanted to come under a motion but, yesterday, the House of Representatives took up the matter. Since we are on the same page with the House, I feel I should not come under a motion. But I will like to seize this opportunity to advise the minister that he should remember that he is now a minister and should behave like a minister,” .

” If the job is too much for him – the ministry is too big; it comprises three ministries, which are works, housing and power; if he cannot adjust, then, he should do the honourable thing. He should so the needful.

“No amount of blackmail by him; no amount of propaganda by him or his surrogates will stop this National Assembly from discharging its duties in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution. We have sworn to uphold and protect this Constitution, and this we will do to the end of this Assembly.

“For now, I will cease fire and watch to see how the House will handle him. If he is well handled there, we will leave him with them. But if we are not satisfied and they pass him to us, then, we will take him over.”

Badoo crisis: What effect could it have on Olamide badoo’s image?

olamide new hairstyle, Badoo crisis

Nigeria, Africa’s most crowded nation and home to more than 155 million individuals is amidst political, monetary and social shakiness. The north, focal and south eastern parts of Nigeria are the most influenced parts.

No wonder the country sits pretty comfortably on the 6th position of Africa 10 Most Dangerous Countries.

Killings in different forms has been the major headline in the last 8 Years. If it is not MEND it will be BOKO HARAM. If it is not HERDSMEN it will be KIDNAPPERS.

Tension fills the whole region and no where is considered save for habitation. Although, the efforts of the Nigerian Army is yielding the desired fruits as we were told sometime ago that these elements had been technically defeated.

Meanwhile, as the Nigerian government seeks to finding a solution to many problem bedevilling the country, event took a dramatic turn in the South Western region of Nigeria.

Around mid-2016, a group called “BADOO” was reported to have carried out a bloodletting operation at an area called “Ikorodu”, in Lagos State.
Their modus operandi is to sneak in to houses at the odd hour or hijack a loosely closed doors. They hit their victims on the head with a grinding stone and soak their blood in their magical handkerchief.

The spate of Badoo operations in Ikorodu is becoming increasingly alarming and nobody knows who their next target will be.

However, looking at the name Badoo, one may tend to mistake it for one of the Nigerian finest Indigenous rapper, Olamide, who adopted the nickname ‘Badoo’ and turned it to a brand.

Olamide to lovers of indigenous Rap music needs no introduction. He is a musician who rose from nothing to become something. And he is never shy to remind his fans that he’s truly from the street (ghetto).

As people continue to mumble on what brought the name ‘Badoo’ for destructive missions, I ask : What Effect could Badoo Onslaughts Have On Olamide Badoo’s fan base and image.

Lagos Lawmakers move to revive teaching of History.

Lagos History

The Lagos State House of Assembly yesterday, passed a resolution to revive teaching of history in schools for nation building.

The House called on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to direct relevant ministries and agencies of the state to revive and enhance the teaching of the subject.

The Assembly also called on the state’s ministry of education to brief the House committee on education on strategies needed to achieve the goal.

The Deputy Majority Leader, Olumuyiwa Jimoh, who moved the motion, said that there had been a decline in the teaching of history in schools.

“Our history and collective patrimonies should be taught in schools to address some of the fundamental issues on nation building and give us direction.

Without history, we are a lost race; it is through history we know our origin and tradition.

We need to resuscitate it and make its teaching compulsory. Without our history, there is no way we can develop,”.

Other lawmakers also decried the decline in history teaching in schools, saying that Nigeria had suffered much from the decline.

According to them, history is important for the socio-economic, cultural and political development of the nation.

The lawmakers decried the decision of the National Council of Education in 2007 that teaching of history was not necessary in schools.

The Chairman, House Committee on Education, Lanre Ogunyemi, said it was sad that history was no longer taught in many schools.

Ogunyemi said that subjects such as social studies, civic education and government could not replace history.

“The importance of history to mankind can’t be overemphasised because it helps us to remember the past and shape our future.

No one can kill history no matter how he tries. The earlier we bring back teaching of history in our schools, the better for us,”

In his submission, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa described history as a teacher. He said

History is like a teacher teaching us where we were, where we are, and the way to go.

It is to our own advantage politically, economically, culturally and others.

It is important to return history to our school curriculum.

Nigerian Breweries Withdraws Sponsorship From Chimamanda Adichie’s Workshop

Nigerian Breweries Plc has withdrawn its sponsorship of Farafina Trust Writing Workshop of Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Adichie made this known yesterday, July 4, noting that the 2017 edition of the Farafina Trust Writing Workshop will not hold this year as a result of that.

Chimamanda Adichie

In a statement by Adichie, the writer said the workshop which would have been in its tenth year will not hold due to the withdrawal of its sponsor, the Nigerian Breweries PLC (NB PLC).

The statement reads:

”I am sorry to announce that the Farafina Trust Writing Workshop will be unable to hold this year, which would have been its tenth year.

Our sponsor, Nigerian Breweries PLC (NB PLC), abruptly withdrew their sponsorship due to a need to streamline their expenditure.

NB PLC has had a half-decade relationship with the workshop and I thank them for encouraging the development of literary talent in Nigeria and Africa.

In the years since NB PLC’s involvement, many alumni have gone on to confirm the promise they showed at the workshop.

My commitment to the growth of our voices has not wavered. Nor has the commitment of those who have worked to make this decade-long endeavour the success that it has been. We will take this time off to establish a new organisation and structure that will provide a more stable foundation for the workshop and other initiatives.

From the initial reaction of potential sponsors and partners, we are optimistic about the future. My thanks and best wishes to all those who have made enquiries about applying for this year’s workshop. The workshop will be back next year.”

Former Nigerian Goalie Vincent Enyeama Sacked via sms.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, who retired from the national team during the Sunday Oliseh reign as the Super Eagles coach has been sacked by the new Lille coach, Marcelo Bielsa.Vincent Enyeama

The Nigerian goalkeeper is among the eleven players sacked by the club’s new Argentine coach.

The coach was reported to have sent sms to all the players involved including Zambia’s Stoppila Sunzu, Tunisia’s Naim Sliti and Ivory Coast’s Junior Tallo revealing their services are no longer needed at the club.

The new manager was reported to have said that they are not part of his plans for the club.

Enyeama, who has 101 appearances for the Super Eagles just last season penned a deal with the club and has been reported to likely follow the lead of Tallo who said:

“As for me, I’m under contract. I will respect the two years I have left. I’m in no hurry.”

“I want to establish myself at Lille.

“It’s the club that wants me to leave. We’ll see if they find a solution between now and the end of the transfer window. I’m calm. It’s a bit bizarre, but I’m handling it OK.

“I was informed like the others, by text. We’re under contract, the club does what it wants.”

Tallo added:

“We would have liked to have had a discussion. But it’s a business choice made by the bosses. The club has already made some summer signings including Burkina Faso international goalkeeper Herve Koffi following Lille’s disappointing 11th place finish in Ligue 1 last season. Howevr African players such as, former captain Rio Mavuba, Eder, Julian Palmieri, Marko Basa, Éric Bauthéac, Lenny Nangis and Marvin Martin have been ordered to stay away from the rest of the squad as pre-season started on 3 July.”

Enyeama has made a total of 164 appearances for the club since he joined in June 2011.

Confirming the move, the Nigerian goalkeeper on Monday tweeted a photo with some of his fellow players who were sacked from the team and captioned it,

“Always a pleasure to be back with the team.”

Why Osinbajo May Be Impeached

The Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo is presently facing a fiery opposition with the Nigerian Senate even as the Red Chamber portrays a strong indication for his impeachment.

At the plenary session which held yesterday, 3rd July, 2017, the Nigerian Senate outrightly condemned the comment made by the Osinbajo that executive appointments did not require legislative approval based on Section 171 of the constitution, which they interpret to undermine their legislative powers.

While the Acting President sent a letter to the National Assembly for the confirmation of Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, as the Chairman of the National Lottery Commission, the Senate refused ‘until the presidency recognizes the legislative powers.

at the plenary session

Senator Eyinanya Abaribe (Abia South)also moved a motion for the impeachment of Acting President Osinbajo, since President Mohammadu Buhari is on medical leave and the Acting President is in Addis Ababa for the African Union Summit and the country cannot be with no leader.

Senator Kabiru Marafa also supported the motion citing the constitution that “if the President is not around, the Vice President should act, and if the Vice President is not around, the Senate President who is number 3 citizen shoukd become the acting President.”

But, the motion was ruled out by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
