“I am a member of the Federal Executive Council and I stand with the decision and the wisdom of specialized universities limiting themselves to their core mandate. The laws creating these universities are very clear.
What business does the university of agriculture have in producing lawyers and accountants? If we are not careful, in future they will produce imams and pastors.
We have so many universities of agriculture that abandoned their specialty and they are producing accountants and mechanics, they will soon be producing footballers.
After carefully examining the laws that created these universities, the Federal Executive Council took this decision. We came to the decision that these universities should concentrate on their specialty.
It was not an arbitrary decision. It has broad consultation. The AGF was invited so I think what we did was the best for the country for now.”
Chairman, House Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFund, Suleiman Aminu, also spoke extensively on the decision of the government to ban general courses offered by specialized universities.
He said:
“Some persons must be cut out from our universities of Agriculture and Technology but I don’t believe that decision has received the best of consultations across the country. I said it because we have received serious petitions disagreeing with this decision of the government.
The world over, there are several universities of specialized fields that are actually not restricted to that particular discipline measure. We have met with the public, particularly those that are very informed on this issue.
We have met with the representatives of NUC, JAMB and the vice chancellors and we will invite more for us to benefit from their knowledge.
The laws establishing those institutions must be reviewed. If you go ahead and do it without actually changing the Act, there may be little problem. We are not against this change if it would benefit the system and Nigeria.
We can assure you of our spot as usual but where there are concerns I think particularly are where the laws that established these institutions do not have very clear mandate. I think the Federal Executive Council should make consultations”.

Now, this Morning, Her father has confirmed that His daughter’s boyfriend has confessed to killing and burning his daughter.

Meeting with the newly released 82 Chibok girls, First lady of the country, Aisha Buhari, on Wednesday, pledged her support in the resettlement of the recently rescued Chibok school girls.
She also advised them to forget the past and acquire skills to be self-reliant.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, May 9, remanded a politician identified as Charles Eni-Umukoro over the murder of his wife, Louisa Eni-Umukoro, who was a director in the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Justice Mary-Anne Aninih ordered the remand of Eni-Umukoro in Kuje Prison, FCT pending the hearing of his bail application.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) in February charged Umukoro with culpable homicide, which is punishable with death under Section 221 of the Penal Code. The defendant however denied the allegation.
According to the charge signed by Kenneth Ubanwa of the Legal/Prosecution Section of the Force Headquarters, Umukoro allegedly caused the death of the woman by “hitting her on the head which caused internal haemorrhage with the knowledge that her death would be the probable consequence.”
Attached with the charge is an autopsy report from the Department of Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology of the National Hospital in Abuja, which shows that the deceased died from ‘subdural haemorrhage’ resulting from two bruises on both sides of the neck, which the doctors said are products of ‘external force’.
The criminal charge followed a complaint by the deceased family, Eliab U. Ukponmwan of Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State, where they cited several incidents of violence among the two, which they alleged led to the deceased’s death on April 22, 2016.
In a petition to the IGP dated August 17, 2016, the family’s counsel, Barrister Ezekiel Ugochukwu stated that there exists circumstantial evidence against the husband based on the incidents of the evening of April 21, 2016, when she went to the hospital with head injuries.
“Louise Eni-Umukoro was born to the family of Mr. & Mrs. E. U. Ukponmwan, in Edo State on the 27th of March 1960, Mrs. Louise Eni-Umukoro joined the Commission on 22nd October, 1986 as an Assistant Economist and rose through the rank to attain the highest career position in the Commission – Director in January 2010,” the statement said.
“Until her untimely passing, she was one of the most experienced staff of the Commission, a consummate and hard working professional. She made indelible contributions to the current framework for regulating collective investment schemes in Nigeria during her fruitful years as Head of that Department. Her contribution to the work of the Committee on the Review of Minimum Paid-Up Capital for Market Operators earned her Commendation from Management in 2003.
“Her last posting was to Head the Zonal Office Coordinating (ZOC) Department. She was entrusted with that position as a mark of confidence in her ability to lead the transformation reforms needed at the Zonal Offices. Her demise is really sad because she was already doing a great job of introducing innovative ways to strengthen the Zonal Offices.
“Mrs. Louise Eni-Umukoro was a compassionate leader, a caring mother and a mentor to many who served under her. She has left a huge vacuum and will be sorely missed by all of us.

Operatives of the Nigerian Police Force in Imo State have apprehended some cultists during their initiation ceremony in a Secondary school.
This was made known in a statement by the Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike in the state. The state reads in parts:
“On 10/05/2017 at about 06 50hrs, operatives of Orji Police Division received a distress call that a group of cultists were rampaging at Orji Comprehensive Secondary School during initiation activity and were shooting indiscriminately.
A combined team of operatives responded to the area. On sighting the police operatives, the hoodlums started shooting and fled to different locations. Thirty-one (31) suspected cultists were later arrested. The suspects are undergoing screening at the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (SCIID)
The State Commissioner of Police CP Chris Ezike who coordinated the operation averred that cult related activities is a top priority in his road map to fighting crime and criminality in the state. He stated that those arrested would be charged to court after investigation.

Paul Arisa, a 27-year-old graduate of Estate Management from Abia State University went viral last year, after his friends solicited for help for him online to fight cancer…..But unfortunately he lost the battle.

Vanguard is reporting that the management of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has said that it’d engaging operatives from the Nigerian Police, EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices, ICPC, and other Related Offences commission to monitor the examination centres in the forthcoming Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UMTE.
Also to mount surveillance at the 624 JAMB centres nationwide on Saturday are operatives from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, the Department of State Services, DSS and special security forces to ensure a smooth exercise.
The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede who disclosed this to newsmen in Abuja, said each JAMB’s test centre will have a supervisor, a technical officer, a verification officer, three proctors as well as security agents.
He further stated that, “Each state will be superintended over by a head of a tertiary institution (Vice-Chancellor, Rector or Provost) who coordinates the supervisors under his or her jurisdiction.”
Stating that the UTME will not be business as usual, Oloyede declared,
“it is certainly not going to be business as usual in the conduct of the Board’s examination and other processes. “In line with this resolution, the Board had secured through diligent prosecution, the conviction of two Nigerians who forged the Board’s results and came around for verification.
“At the moment, we have lodged complaints against a number of Computer-Based Test, CBT, centre owners for one infraction or the other and a number of them were arrested, cautioned, while others are to be prosecuted so as to serve as a deterrent to others.”
The JAMB Registrar warned candidates not to fall for the ploy of fraudsters who he said were out to defraud them, noting that there was a case at the Federal Government Science Technical College, Orozo, at the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, where somebody was sending bulk messages to candidates to come and reprint their slips claiming to be from JAMB.
