Defiling the court order, which was granted to suspend all process of Senator Dino Melaye’s recall, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has continued with the recall process of the Kogi West Senatorial district representative, saying that the electoral body could not be stopped from performing its constitutional duty.
The Nation reported that INEC on Monday pasted the notice of the verification of the recall process at its Kogi state office.
Melaye, is facing a recall by his constituents who have filed a recall with signatures; the recall will run from July 10 to August 19.
INEC decided to continue with the process based on precedents and judicial pronouncements, especially the Appeal Court judgement of 2001.
Mallam Mohammed Haruna, National Commissioner of INEC in charge of North-Central, said the Court of Appeal had since 2001 decided that a court cannot stop the recall of a lawmaker.
The INEC “Notice of Verification”, states:
“In accordance with Section 69 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999(As amended), notice is hereby given that the verification for the recall of the member representing Kogi West Senatorial District of Kogi State shall hold as follows:
“Date: 19th August, 2017; Time: 8am-2pm; Location: All polling units in Kogi West Senatorial District.”
A source said:
“If you look at the provision of Section 87(10) of the Electoral Act, 2010(As amended), which is applicable in this instance, INEC cannot be stopped from doing its work of conducting election in any manner whatsoever.
“The provision of Section 110 of the 1999 Constitution is actually explicit on the recall. As an institution, INEC has nothing against Melaye or any lawmaker. We are expected to follow the constitution and the Electoral Act. Implementing a recall process is not a suicide mission for any lawmaker. If a lawmaker has the backing of his or her constituents, the recall process will be dead on arrival.”
Haruna said:
“We have a Court of Appeal judgement on why court cannot stop the process. This judgment is dated back to 2001.
“Since there is a subsisting Court of Appeal judgment, we will abide by it.”
The notice, dated July 3rd, 2017, reads :
“In exercise of the powers conferred on the Independent National Electoral Commission(“the Commission”) by Sections 69 and 110 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999(as amended); Section 116 of the Electoral Act 2010(as amended) and of all the powers enabling it in that behalf, the Commission hereby issues this timetable schedule of activities for the recall of the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Kogi State.”

Nwankwo Kanu has recalled the day his wife Amara saved his life and then nursed him back to health. After putting their three children to bed, the Arsenal legend and his wife were enjoying the peace and quiet. .
They were about to go to sleep, but the former striker’s hammering heartbeat was keeping Amara awake. She recalls:
“His heartbeat sounded much louder than normal. I was listening to his chest and it sounded odd.”
In 1996, Kanu had needed lifesaving open-heart surgery after being diagnosed with a heart valve defect. Amara, 30, couldn’t shake the niggling feeling that was something wasn’t quite right and insisted her husband get it checked immediately. .
Kanu, now 40, says:
“She was saying I should go for a check-up so I took her advice.” And Amara was proved right because experts told him there was further damage to his heart and he urgently needed a second operation. .
“It was the same faulty valve,” “It was like a ticking time bomb. It’s just one of those things we were lucky to find out.”
Not only did she save his life, Amara also nursed him back to health. .
Kanu’s first open-heart surgery was in 1996 after a routine medical examination at Inter Milan revealed the serious heart defect. He was a professional athlete at the top of his game and had just helped Nigeria win gold at the Olympics. .
It was a complete shock but Kanu says:
“Now I know that being fit and strong doesn’t make your heart 100%.”

In spite of the rising violence of Badoo cult group in the Ikorodu area of Lagos state, the residents have now grown more security conscious by employing the means of whistle-blowing against any suspicion.
As a result of this, the prices of whistles have now hiked in the local markets around Ikorodu area to an up-shoot of #200 or #250 from the initial #100 price.
Some of the market sellers that spoke with Vanguard attested to the unusual demands of whistles made them switch their business to the fast-profiting whistle sales.
“I was initially selling snacks, but when I saw that some traders were making swift sales from hawking whistles, I decided to join them.
“I investigated where they sourced whistles wholesale and I swiftly joined them. I now hawk whistles in my neighbourhood”, Mrs. Tifase Abiola, mentioned.
Mr. Muhammed Mutiu, a dealer in books, who suddenly ventured to the whistle business, said he has been making wholesome sales.
“Initially, I was selling books on wholesale, but when I discovered that a lot of hawkers in the market were going to Tom Jones market in Lagos Island to buy whistles, I decided to join them.
“I went to the market, bought in wholesale and to my surprise, it has been very rewarding as people from the Ikorodu hinterlands also now come to the market to buy in bulk,” he said.
Whistles are not items we sell everyday, but in the last two weeks, the demand for the item around here has compelled me to invest in the business”, Deji Onigunseye, another trader affirmed.
However, the Lagos Police Commands also assured the residents of Ikorodu peaceful livelihood as the intend to embark on some serious security operations.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has urged critics of the Federal Government yam export policy to grow the commodity.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Monday, Ogbeh dismissed the criticisms of the policy, saying that the effort was in the best interest of the nation’s economy.
He said the energies being dissipated by critics in condemning the initiative could be better used to produce yam, a staple in most parts of the country.
The minister allayed the fears of some Nigerians who believed that the policy would lead to shortage of yam in the country.
According to him, there is currently an overabundance in yam production in the domestic market.
“I have seen attacks on the social media. There are questions all over as to why we are exporting yam when Nigerians are said to be hungry.
“With all due respect, Nigeria accounts for 61 percent of the world output of yam. We have 60 varieties of yam in this country.
“In fact, 30 percent of the yams we produce get rotten because we don’t have facilities to preserve them.
“Ghana is a famous country for exportation of the commodity, but most of the yam they export is from us.
“There has never been shortage of yam in the country. Prices might be high toward the end of the season, but new yam is already in the market.
“Why are you so cowardly? Why lay back by not trying anything because of some sentimental reasons that might be raised?”
Critics of the policy believe that investment in local processing of yams into finished products is of more economic benefit to the country than exporting the commodity.
But the minister dismissed this suggestion, arguing that export made more economic sense than processing.
“Analysts are saying that we are supposed to add more value to yam production in order to earn more money, fantastic view.
“But they forget to tell us how much a tuber of yam costs in the USA. Three kilogrammes cost $15, which is equivalent to about N5, 000.
“In London, a carton of yam, this contains three tubers, costs £30, bringing the average cost per tuber to £10.
“At that price, it is more sensible to export to earn more money for our economy.
“Economy is 90 percent common sense. You can’t keep on buying until you are broke. What are you selling?”
To further buttress his point, the minister said foreign trade partners came to complain when Nigeria limited its food imports.
“They complained that we were not buying stock fish from them. I asked them if they were buying anything from us. Let us do some selling as well too.
“Nigerians should stop the sarcasm and negativity in trying to rubbish every government policy. If Ghana can export yam, Nigeria too can.”
