A 23-year-old dental student from France won the Miss Universe crown Monday in the Philippines, local time, bringing her country its first win in the annual pageant in 64 years.
Iris Mittenaere from the city of Lille in northern France said in reply to a final question from pageant host Steve Harvey that she would be honored if she just landed among the three finalists. But she was visibly stunned when she was announced the winner among the field of 86 contestants.

A man hailing from Kano state, Usman Bukar, 41, slapped a taxi driver to coma in Delta state for spreading “Buhari is dead rumour”.
The man was slapped into deep unconsciousness at the Temple Clinic Junction Asaba.
Eye witness account said that Bukar pounced on the driver who was seen visibly happy and spreading the rumour at a newspaper stand, popularly known as “free readers association” after he had read from a blog that Buhari is dead.
He was reported to have said:
“The body of the President should be thrown into River-Niger for fish and other wild animals to do justice on him. He is very wicked.”
At this statement, Bukar who also was part of the free readers’ association got annoyed and gave him a dirty slap that sent him to pulp. The driver was rushed to a nearby private hospital where he was being revived.
However, the account said that the relatives of the taxi driver were then called. When they came, they wanted to fight the Kano man, a situation that might have resulted to bloodshed but for the timely intervention of the police.
Vanguard reports that the spokesman of Delta state police command Andrew Aniamaka confirmed that the victim is receiving treatment adding that the alleged attacker had been arrested and detained for interrogation.
Benue State capital, Markurdi, was thrown into mourning last Friday after the discovery of a lifeless body of a mother of two said to have drowned herself in River Benue due to her inability to repay the loan of N400,000 she invested in MMM.
Husband of 34-year-old mother of two, Gloria Samson, said he didn’t have any inkling that his wife planned to kill herself.
Speaking in an emotion-laden voice, David Samson told SUNDAY PUNCH that he was aware that his wife was a victim of the money-doubling scheme; Mavrodi Mundial Moneybox otherwise called MMM.
The deceased began the journey to her final resting place at a public cemetery located in Ankpa ward, Makurdi, the state capital, last Friday.
As her corpse, wrapped in a casket, arrived in the cemetery, crowd of mourners wore gloomy faces, women wept profusely and men in teary eyes shook their heads intermittently.
The circumstance surrounding the death of the woman fuelled the agony of the sympathisers who knew the deceased. She lived with her family at Vandeikya Street, Makurdi.
Sources told SUNDAY PUNCH that the woman left home without her phone three days after Christmas and reportedly told her kids to forgive her. She also sent same message to her husband through her children.
It was learnt that few days after she left her home, precisely January 2, the police in Benue discovered a lifeless body floating on River Benue at Wadata area, few kilometers to her residence.
Rescue operations got the floating corpse and deposited the remains at the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi.
Meanwhile, Gloria’s family had searched for her for three weeks until they heard about the corpse the police discovered on River Benue which later turned out to be her.
Samson disclosed that he was aware that his wife took a loan of N400,000 from four different places which she did not invest in her petty business.
He said,
“My wife was into petty trading and she had been collecting soft loan from a micro finance bank to boost her business. Anytime she collected the money, she paid back and in most cases, I was her guarantor.
“You know women sometimes keep secret; towards November and December 2016, I discovered she took a loan from four places amounting to N400,000. I do not know what she used the money for because there was nothing in the shop to suggest that she invested the money in her business.
“She did not tell me but what I observed is that my wife developed a cold attitude around the time the report of the freezing of accounts of MMM subscribers in Nigeria went viral. Her attitude changed and she became depressed.”
He stated that the situation lasted till the Christmas period and when he asked her what the problem was, she told him that she was sick and he told her to see a doctor.
“She obliged and was diagnosed of typhoid and malaria and placed on medication. Even on Christmas Day, she could not go to church. A day after Christmas, she complained of pile and I had to buy traditional medicine which she declined to take.
On December 28, 2016 around 11pm, I was at my place of work when my son, Wisdom called me using his mother’s phone number telling me that his mother had left the house since and had yet to return. I told him I was close by and on getting home, I did not see her. I discovered that she left the house with a gown and bathroom slippers.
“I tried to look for her and could not find her. I picked my phone and contacted my siblings and brother-in-law. The following morning, I went to B Police Division to complain but I was told to wait after 24 hours, which I did. On the second day, I was asked to make a statement and leave behind my phone number.’’
The distraught husband further said he did not hear from the police for two weeks and he had to keep searching and informing people in case anyone of them saw his wife.
“Some members of my church including my pastor were aware and kept on interceding for us. This continued until last Tuesday when a woman came to my house and told one of my neighbours that a police woman told her that they discovered the body of a woman floating on River Benue around Wadata area since January 2.
“Immediately I heard this, I was perplexed because something in me told me it might be my wife. I told my neighbour to join me to go to A Division at Wadata. When we got there, the police showed me the picture of the dead woman and I discovered that she was my wife.’’
He told Punch that he was still confused as to what could make his wife to kill herself. He stated,
“My wife loved herself and she could not even allow a razor to touch her body not to talk of going to this length. That is why I said it is more of spiritual attack, but only God knows.
“At the same time, when you look at the whole scenario, there is a conclusion that the money she collected was not invested in her business.’’
Neighbours of the deceased who spoke on condition of anonymity said she became moody shortly after the operators of the MMM froze three million accounts belonging to its Nigerian subscribers early December.
One of them said,
“What we gathered is that she borrowed money from four different places and invested it in MMM. But shortly after MMM froze the accounts of its Nigerian subscribers, she withdrew from people.”
Another neighbour stated,
“The woman was a jovial person but suddenly she withdrew to herself. I even tried to find out what was wrong with her because she was my customer but she did not tell me. She had a shop where she sold petty things. I later gathered that she took a loan from various places but instead of using it for her business, she invested it in MMM and since its collapse, she had refused to talk to anybody.”
One of the late woman’s customers at Wadata market, Makurdi, identified only as Bridget said,
“We met before Christmas and she lamented that she invested the loan she took from a micro finance bank and other sources in an investment that would bring quick and double money (referring to MMM) but the thing collapsed. She threatened that she would run away and I even preached to her not to do so. Since then, I did not see her again only to hear last Tuesday that she drowned herself in River Benue around Wadata.”
When contacted, spokesman for the police in the state, Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident.
“The husband of the deceased had come to claim the corpse,” he said.

Governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha, has said that the Igbos will give their utmost support to President Buhari in his eight years in office.
Okorocha said this after he received APC leaders from the South East at the Imo International Convention Centre (IICC) on Saturday January 28th.
According to him, the defection of former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, to APC recently, is a welcomed development as he has become the leader of APC in the South East.
He added that APC will guarantee an Igbo Presidency.
“Now that Igbo leaders are together in APC, Nigerians will hear us. There is a vaccum of leadership in the South-East APC. I am a Governor. My brothers Chris Ngige and Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu are ministers. Hence the importance of Ken Nnamani coming at this time. I declined leadership of Ndi-Igbo in APC.
With Ken Nnamani, the question of who is the leader of APC in the Southeast has been answered. Ken Nnamani is the leader of APC in the South-East. Senator Nnamani should then work with other leaders like Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Jim Nwobodo and a host of others to give Ndi-Igbo Political direction. Those who have joined the Party or who want to join should do so to build the Party and not to cause confusion.
APC is the right Party for the Igbo and the only Party that can guarantee Igbo Presidency. We are going to support President Muhammadu Buhari for the eight years he is going to lead the nation.

The Operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command, have arrested a 35 year old man, Abiola Hamzat and his accomplice, Adebayo Kazeem, 32, for stealing 20 bags of cement from a brick making company based in Agbado area of the state.
The suspect was arrested by the Policemen after he had successfully stolen the items from their working place.
The arrested suspect, a father of three, stole the 20 bags of cement from the company a day after he was promoted to the post of a supervisor with a financial reward of N215,000:00 per month.
It was learnt that the suspect who is a university graduate, was lured into the crime out of greed and lack of contentment.
According to sources within the company, Hamzat, a graduate of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), started work at the factory as a Contract Security from where he rose to become an operator.
“However, he was formally promoted three days ago to the post of a Supervisor, when the company’s management discovered that he was a university graduate,” the source added.
He was arrested on last Thursday along with an accomplice after moving 20 bags of cement out of the factory in Agbado area.
Upon his arrival at the RRS’ Headquarters, the suspect who owned up to the crime, said that he masterminded the crime. In his confessional statement, the suspect said,
“I masterminded the crime but I only co-opted Adebayo into the plan. Initially, Adebayo discouraged me that it was not possible to steal cement at the company.
After so much pressure, he told me to carry the gateman along in order to be successful which I eventually yielded to…. I had an accommodation problem with my family. I was desperately looking for funds to house them. That was what pushed me into it.”
According to sources within the company, Hamzat’s new salary as a Supervisor triples his wage as an operator.
While confirming the arrest, the Spokesperson for Lagos State Police Command, Superintendent of Police, Dolapo Badmus, advised companies operating in the state to be vigilant at all time.
The suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigative Department (SCID), Yaba for prosecution.
A 46 year-old pastor, Joseph Afolayan, who was arrested by the police in Osun State for alleged fraud, has attempted to hang himself in the police cell.
Afolayan, a pastor with Freed Zone Church in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, was arrested alongside his female friend, Miss Bimbo Olanrewaju.
It was learnt that the pastor requested a financial help of N600,000 from Olanrewaju, saying he needed the money to clear some goods he was expecting from Canada.
Olanrewaju and the pastor were said to have fraudulently obtained a sum of N450,000 from one Mathew Odeleye, while the pastor fled after allegedly defrauding Mathew of N450,000.
Mathew lodged a complaint at a police station and the police arrested Olanrewaju, but could not get Afolayan.
To get the pastor, the police were said to have asked Olanrewaju to call the pastor and tell him to come to collect N150,000 to complete the money that he needed to clear the goods.
Punch reports that when the pastor went to collect the money, he was arrested by the police and detained for further investigation. The pastor then attempted to kill himself in the police cell because of the shame the alleged act brought to him.
He was arraigned before a magistrate court sitting in Osogbo immediately after the alleged failed suicide attempt in the cell.
A police prosecutor, Mr. Sunday Ajayi, brought the defendants to court on counts of stealing; obtaining money under false pretences and attempted suicide, while Olanrewaju was charged with stealing and obtaining money under false pretences.
The charges read in part,
“That you, Bimbo Olanrewaju and Joseph Afolayan, sometime in May 2015, on Mabinu Street, in the Jaye area of Osogbo, in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did conspire together to commit felony, to wit; obtaining money under false pretences.
“That you did steal the sum of N450,000, property of one Mathew Odeleye, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol. II, Law of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.
“That you, Joseph Afolayan, on January 18, 2017, at about 9am, in the custody of the Oke Odo Police Division, in the aforementioned magisterial district, did attempt to commit suicide by using your shirt to tighten your neck in the cell, in other to take your life, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 327 of the Criminal Code 34, Vol. II, Law of Osun State of Nigeria.”
The two accused pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against them.
The magistrate, Mrs. Falilat Sodamade, granted them bail in the sum of N100,000 each and adjourned the case till February 20.

Two Nigerian women, Olubunmi Ajai Layode and Mo Abatan, who are both resident in the United Kingdom, have proven that women don’t have to be rivals just because they have been with same man, especially if the man in question turn out to be irresponsible.

“Mo Abatan and I hung out yesterday with our kids who happen to be siblings. I met Seyifunmi when she was around 5 or so… and even then, her dad was not taking his responsibilities up with her. Every birthday card or gift was by me. Every visit to her was at my insistence.
Mo and I remained friends and talk on the phone from time to time. She is a good person and an amazing friend. Even after I left Dafe, we still kept in touch. We determined that the two siblings would not turn out irresponsible like their Dad. Seyifunmi and Tobi met maybe once on one of the rare occasions that their father agreed to have them spend holidays with him.Dupe and I have been planning that the kids should hang out more and yesterday, we made it happen.
But this is the thing – even though there is very little physical resemblance, (Seyifunmi is Dafe’s spitting image and Tobi is Jopa’s spitting image), their bahaviours are very similar! Both are very body conscious. They watch what they eat and are very slim and both have very quick comebacks to anything you say to them. Lol. But today I just couldn’t hold it any longer. Friday 1/20/17 started like any other normal day. I was excited about my trip to Tehran. After all I only get to visit them once a year. I was excited and anxious at the same time. I was worried about my little puppy but I couldn’t wait to see my mom…
It was an uneventful trip. I made him home on Monday 1/22/17, after around 28 hours, exhausted but so so happy. We were all happy. I was going to eat lots of delicious Persian food and make tons of great memories and go back to my life in the US. But the happiness didn’t last that long. On Wednesday, we started hearing rumors about new executive orders that will change immigration rules for some countries including Iran. Soon we started reading drafts like everyone else. I might be banned from going back?!?! No that can’t be true. I’m not gonna let that ruin my trip. But then it got serious so fast.
Before I knew it, it was actually happening. Even though I didn’t want to leave my family, I quickly booked a ticket to get on the next flight back. Only a few hours after the order was signed, I got to the airport, got on a plane and made it to Dubai. After waiting in the line to get my documents checked and after 40 minutes of questions and answers, I boarded the plane to Washington, only to have two TSA officers getting in and ask me to disembark the plane!!!
Yes after almost 7 years of living the the United States, I got deported!!!
No one warned me when I was leaving, no one cared what will happen to my dog or my job or my life there. No one told me what I should do with my car that is still parked at the airport parking. Or what to do with my house and all my belongings.
They didn’t say it with words but with their actions, that my life doesn’t matter. Everything I worked for all these years doesn’t matter.

Gambia’s new President Adama Barrow has announced the country’s official name will no longer contain the word “Islamic”, which had been added by Jammeh in 2015.
The new president said The Gambia, whose population is 90 percent Muslim, with the rest Christian and animist, was a republic “not the Islamic republic“.
Two days to Christmas, Friday Azuka Nduka was shot to death by a policeman at the NNPC Control Post in Owerri, five days to his wedding.
He has been laid to rest amidst tears in his hometown, Egbuoma community in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State.
Friday Azuka Nduka had returned from Malaysia for his wedding in Owerri on December 27, 2016, only to be killed on December 22 by the trigger-happy policeman, Michael Edem in the presence of his fiancée and younger brother.
Nduka had gotten into in a serious argument with one of the pump attendants over his missing iPhone 7.
He said the argument degenerated into a fight and Nduka, inflicted injuries on the attendant.
The witness said the manager of the station, Mrs. Ruth Enemmuo, who is now in police detention, intervened, adding that as soon as Nduka entered into his car, the police inspector fired, killing him instantly. The inspector fled the area and had not been seen.
The manager later went to the police station to report the killing, but was detained immediately.
