A woman in a desperate attempt to smuggle her boyfriend out of prison by hiding him in a pink suitcase, got caught when she struggled to pull it along on her way out.
The attempted jailbreak took place in the Jose Antonio Anzoategui prison, better known as Puente Ayala, located in the state of Anzoategui, in north-eastern Venezuela.
Antonieta Robles Saouda, 25, went to the jail with a six-year-old girl to visit Ibrain Jose Vargas Garcia, who is serving nine years and eight months after being convicted for car robbery.
She came in carrying a pink suitcase but the guards’ suspicions were aroused when she had difficulty moving it on the way out.
On closer inspection, they found a very cramped Vargas huddled inside.
Though a small and slim man, Vargas has evidently performed a feat of contortionism to cram himself into the small space, as pictures released by the jail show.
The brand-new looking pink suitcase is large but no larger than those usually seen at airports, and Saouda had even crammed in some extra material, perhaps to soften the outline of Vargas’s form.
The couple were both arrested and the man was sent back to his cell. The little girl was put in the temporary care of Social Services.
Nigerian Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has warned that religion will kill Nigeria if it is not tamed.
Speaking in Abuja on Thursday at the presentation of a book, Religion and the Making of Nigeria, written by Prof. Olufemi Vaughan, the Nobel laureate imagined what the world would be if religion had never been invented and condemned killings in the name of religion saying he wondered how any rational being could attempt to justify homicide as an act of devotion.
Wole said:
If we do not tame religion in this nation, religion would kill us.
“I do not say kill religion, though, I wouldn’t mind a bit if that mission could be undertaken surgically, painlessly perhaps, under anaesthesia, effectively sprayed all over the nation or perhaps during an induced pouch of religious ecstasy.
“However, one has to be realistic. Only the religiously possessed or committed would deny the obvious.
The price that many have paid, not just within this society but by humanity in general, makes one wonder if the benefits have really been more than the losses.”

Yesterday, the Lagos state police command arrested Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, following a petition by one Lekan Fatodu, whom he, Sowore, had alleged via a publication on his website, that he was being used by former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, to launder money out of the country while he was in office.
Sowore in a new post on his Facebook, alleged that Lekan in company of one of his friends simply identified as Andre, tried to kill him when they waylaid him at GRA Ikeja yesterday. Read what he shared after the cut ..
“I am now safely out of the labyrinth of a police conspiracy centred around one Lekan Fatodu whom, in January 2016, we reported on SaharaReporters had been involved in laundering money for Femi Fani-Kayode. On Wednesday, Lekan and a friend of his referred to as “Ándre” waylaid me at GRA Ikeja and tried to kill me. The attempt was resisted by the public, following which he showed up later with a police van from Area “F” police with a plain cloth police team. As it turned out, Commissioner of the Lagos State Police Command, Fatai Owoseni was part of the conspiracy, as he pulled out a petition alleging “criminal defamation” against me, got upset when I questioned his position and impartiality, and threatened to deal with me. Even in the days of General Abacha, I did not experience that brazen partiality. My attack by Fatodu was organized with the police, but as they were unable to arrest me directly, he was given the cover to carry out an attack that would give the police their needed tonic to take vengeance on me. The situation wasn’t better when I was hurled before Lagos CP, Mr. Owoseni and later, Frank Mba, who started a winding story claiming it was a messy case. I was asked to sign for my bail on Self Recognizance, but I declined, insisting I had not been arrested by the police and were that the case, that I preferred to be booked and shown an arrest warrant. After a short argument, I was let go without signing a bail bond, but was asked to return to the Panti Police Station on Thursday at 2p.m. I wish to thank all Nigerians and others who have reached out to me over this saga. I am grateful to Peter Claver Oparah, Temitope Gomez and Inibehe Effiong who served last night as my lawyer, as well as the construction workers at Isaac John Street who came out to defend me from what could have been a fatal attack. Chief Daniel Okafor alias Odogwu Anam the kingpin of a criminal gang allegedly responsible for the spate of kidnapping in Anambra and Delta State has been convicted and sentenced to 11 years imprisonment by an Asaba High Court for attempting to kidnap an Asaba based industrialist, on the 16th of January, 2013.
Chief Okafor, who claimed to be the chairman of a non-existent National Task Force on Illegal Importation of Small Arms, Light Weapons and Monitoring of Oil Pipeline Vandalism, River Niger Operations was found guilty of two-count charge of conspiracy and attempted kidnap.
Both offences are punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Law Cap C21 Volume I, Laws of Delta State, 2006.
The court sentenced him to five years imprisonment for conspiracy, and six years for the attempted kidnap. He was, however, discharged and acquitted on the charge of attempted murder.
Okafor was arrested following the confessional statement of one of the assailants, Ifeanyi Iwuno, who later escaped from police custody after his arrest for the attempted kidnap of Ucheche on or about January 16, 2013 at Asaba within the Asaba Judicial Division.
Iwuno still at large, during police interrogation admitted being part of the gang that attempted to kidnap Chief Ucheche, and fingered Okafor, as the one who sent them on the mission.
After the failed kidnap attempt Ucheche had petitioned the Commissioner of Police through his lawyer wherein he stated that his assailants were also on a mission to kill him as they fired gunshots at him which landed on his hand and destroyed two tyres of his Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle.
Counsel to in the said victim stated in the petition as follows
“On the 16th of January 2013, our client was brutally shot in the hand at close range in the front of his house situate along Cable Point Area of Asaba by some unknown gunmen. The said gunmen who came in two vehicles also riddled the tyres of his Lexus SUV which our client reported at the “B” Division Police Station but the culprits have however not been arrested”
Continuing, he further stated that:
“Recently, our client got phone calls from an unknown person through GSM No 07083823180 who identified himself as the one who shot him. The mysterious caller told our client that they were paid to kidnap and assassinate him, but after the failed attempt on our client’s life he had a change of heart. He however, demanded for the sum of N5million from our client so that he can reveal the identity of the mastermind of the gruesome attack and also forestall further attacks on our client”
From Police report, when Chief Daniel Okafor alias Odogwu Anam was eventually arrested by the Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Nigerian Police, Asaba following the confessional statement of Ifeanyi Iwuno, the State Police Headquarters witnessed a mammoth crowd who came to have a glimpse of the man believed to be very notorious and have the powers to become invisible as he was alleged to be the mastermind of several high profile cases of kidnapping, armed robbery and murder within Anambra and Delta State.
A four-year-old boy, Praise Dada, fell inside a well on Tuesday following a shout by his mum who found him playing near the well.
The incident occurred at 49, Fakoya Street, Akowonjo area of Egbeda, Lagos around 5pm.
Dada, a Nursery II pupil of Mintlaw International School, followed his mother to greet a friend while returning from school. Mrs Dada decided to visit her friend who just opened a shop near the school.
Dada was seen jumping on the well with a fragile lid. As his mother screamed on the looming danger, the boy, out of shock and panic, was said to have fell inside the well.
The action attracted a huge crowd but none could enter the well to rescue the boy. The Nation reports that it took an hour before he was recovered. He was declared dead at the Holy Mary Hospital opposite the shop.
An eyewitness, Fola said:
“I was in the room when I heard someone screaming, ‘this child has killed himself’. Then I ran out to find out what happened. I even thought it was motorcycle that hit someone. Then I asked them and they said he fell inside a water.
So, I went near the gutter, assuring them that I will rescue the child. Then I realised he fell inside the well. I turned back and called 767. We waited for them for over an hour. But later some Hausa guys came and removed him. By the time he was brought out, he was dead.
“What I heard was that the shock from his mother’s scream led the child inside well because he was already jumping on it. She shouted, fear gripped the boy and he fell down. It was the noise that attracted a crowd. His mother even wanted to go into the well before people removed the baby she strapped on her back for safety.”
Another witness, Grace Tosin, said:
“I was sleeping when I heard the landlord’s voice. The woman was passing by and decided to greet a new tenant here who just rented a shop. After exchange of greetings, she sat and they started chatting. She got here around 4pm. She sat here when the child was jumping on the well.
When she saw him on it and tried to rescue him, he got scared and his head dived into the well. Before we knew it, he was inside the well. The rescuer had wanted to enter the well much earlier but people were creating tension and saying he could also die, so the fear delayed him until he was encouraged again. It was his bag that was first retrieved before his body. He was rushed to the hospital opposite us where he was declared dead on arrival.
“The boy’s father was very furious on hearing the incident. The woman she came to greet had just started selling yesterday. That is where we usually seat whenever there is heat. It has never happened before because the well is few inches away from the ground and it was well covered.”
A nurse, who attended to him, said:
“the boy was dead on arrival. It took them long to retrieve him from the well. We tested his pulse and there was nothing.”
Lagos State Fire Service Director Rasaq Fadipe said:
“It was said that the boy followed his mother to a place and was still in school uniform. The mother didn’t know when the boy left her side. It’s unfortunate. When the fire service at Ikotun received the distress call, they responded but the boy had already sunk.”
The Nation adds that when they visited the family, the father told their reporter:
“We don’t want any media interference. We have accepted what happened and we are moving on. Whatever the rumour out there is, we don’t care. There is nothing to clarify.”
Super Eagles captain and former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has explained his recent move to the Chinese Premier League to team up with Tianjin Teda.
He said the move was primarily done to aid Nigeria’s push to be at the 2018 World Cup in Brazil.

The World Bank has predicted that the country will get out of recession and grow its Gross Domestic Product by one per cent this year after plunging into its worst recession in over two decades.
The bank said in a statement on Wednesday,
“Sub-Saharan African growth is expected to pick up modestly to 2.9 per cent in 2017 as the region continues to adjust to lower commodity prices.
Growth in South Africa and oil exporters is expected to be weaker, while growth in economies that are not natural-resource intensive should remain robust.
Growth in South Africa is expected to edge up to a 1.1 per cent pace this year. Nigeria is forecast to rebound from recession and grow at a 1 per cent pace. Angola is projected to expand at a 1.2 per cent pace.”
The World Bank’s January 2017 Global Economic Prospects report also projected that growth in the advanced economies would edge up to 1.8 per cent in the current year.
It stated that fiscal stimulus in major economies, particularly in the United States, could generate faster domestic and global growth than projected, although rising trade protection could have adverse effects.
Growth in emerging market and developing economies as a whole should pick up to 4.2 per cent this year from 3.4 per cent in the year just ended amid modestly rising commodity prices, the bank stated.
Emerging market and developing economy commodity exporters are expected to expand by 2.3 per cent in 2017 after an almost negligible 0.3 per cent pace in 2016 as commodity prices gradually recover and as Russia and Brazil resume growing after recessions.
It, however, added that the outlook was clouded by uncertainty about policy direction in major economies.
Commenting on the report, the President, World Bank Group, Jim Yong Kim, stated, “After years of disappointing global growth, we are encouraged to see stronger economic prospects on the horizon.
“Now is the time to take advantage of this momentum and increase investments in infrastructure and people. This is vital to accelerating the sustainable and inclusive economic growth required to end extreme poverty.”
The report noted the worrisome recent weakening of investment growth in the emerging markets and developing economies, which account for one-third of the global GDP and about three quarter of the world’s population and the poor.
The World Bank’s Chief Economist, Paul Romer, said “We can help governments offer the private sector more opportunities to invest with confidence that the new capital it produces can plug into the infrastructure of global connectivity.
“Without new streets, the private sector has no incentive to invest in the physical capital of new buildings. Without new work space connected to new living space, the billions of people who want to join the modern economy will lose the chance to invest in the human capital that comes from learning on the job.”

At over 300kg, Ashley is just too big for Daniel to look after on his own so the couple have to live with her supportive family.
Ashley needs round-the-clock care as she can’t perform every day task like showering. Her family even have to feed her.
Ashley says she is worried Daniel will one day say he has had enough.
“It strains my marriage that I can’t be romantic with him, that we can’t express our love the way we want to, but I just don’t want him to see me,” she said.
“One of my biggest fears is that he is going to wake up one day and be like ‘I don’t want to do this anymore. I don’t want to take care of her like she is a patient.’”
The 30-year-old is also aware of the fact her giant size will one day cost her her life.
“I worry that I am not going to wake up tomorrow,” she confessed.
“I feel like my body can’t take it anymore, but if I give up, I am not going to live to grow old with my husband.”
Ashley and Daniel want to start a family, but he fears that won’t be possible if she doesn’t get serious about her health.
“If my wife doesn’t lose the weight all those hopes and dreams are going to be shattered,” said Daniel.

Charms Ltd, a private firm in charge of the ongoing data capturing of Osun State civil servants, has been accused of denying female Muslims their “right to freedom of religion and dressing”.
Some of the female workers, who spoke to Channels TV, alleged that the agency was forcing them to remove their head cover for data capturing.
One of those who claimed to have been a victim said she was asked to open her head which she declined and her refusal to remove the hijab made the agency deny her the right to do the screening.
“I explained to them that I’ve been doing screening and I’ve never been forced to open my hijab,” she said.
Another woman who claimed to be a staff of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, LAUTECHTH, stated that she was sent away because she refused to remove her hijab.
“Some sisters complied and they opened their hijab but because I did my National Identity Card and Voters Card, nobody asked me to open my hijab. That is why I refused,” she said. “They didn’t attend to me till I left after 5PM on Monday. I think the Governor should call them to order and stop humiliating us.”
Another staff of the state government, who simply identified herself as Rahmat, said:
“I don’t know why I would compromise my religion because of mere data capturing that I’ve been doing for a long time. I believed that Chams was appointed by the government to screen and not to humiliate Muslims. I would not take it easy if they insist that I should remove my hijab because I will still go back,”
It was gathered that the LAUTECH Muslim community has taken over the issue as their Chairman reportedly said that they were ready to take up the case officially if the complaints persist.
Meanwhile, the head of Chams Ltd in Osogbo has also promised that the Muslims and others would be allowed to do the capturing without uncovering their hair.

The Lagos state police command has arrested publisher of online news platform, Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, over allegations of defamation of character and threat to life.
He was arrested at his home in Lagos earlier this afternoon. The command acted based on a petition received from UK based journalist, Lekan Fatodu.
According to the petitioner, Sowore had in a publication on his platform, alleged that he was being used by some politicians to carry out acts of money laundering.
Confirming Sowore’s arrest, the Lagos state police command PRO, Dolapo Badmus, said he has been transferred to the state Criminal Investigations Department SCID office, in Panti for further investigations.
