Canadians have trooped to social media to cry out over the sudden rise in the cost of living in Canada.

In videos that have gone viral on the internet, Canadians, both men and women, complained bitterly about the increase in the price of basic living items.

One of the women, who was sobbing bitterly, said she works tirelessly yet her income is barely enough to cater for her living expenses.

Another woman expressed frustration about the escalating prices of food items, and bemoaned buying six pieces of potato for $10.

“How is it that six pieces of potatoes cost $10?” she asked.

A young man advised people planning to migrate to Canada to come in two or threes so they can live together and split the bills.

In other news, a Nigerian man has shared the unexpected events that took place after he paid a travel agent N15 million to secure him a job and a visa to Canada.

According to Grama Shasha who shared the man’s story on TikTok, he wanted to relocate to Canada with his family.

A visa to Canada for the man and his family was promised in exchange for an upfront payment of N5 million from the man.

A fake letter of employment that the agency promised would allow him to work in Canada was all that was delivered to him after a few months.

The travel agency disappeared after that. The man went to another agent since he wasn’t sure what to do and gave him the letter containing the job offer. Read here

Court sentences two farm workers to prison for stealing catfish worth N606K

A Magistrates Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, has convicted one Adegoke Akinleye and Adediran Adewole of robbing their boss, Ibukun Sanusi, of 404 pieces of catfish.

Following their arraignment on two charges of felony and catfish theft valued at N606,000, the defendants—ex-workers on a farm in Ilewo, Abeokuta—were sentenced by Justice O.O. Odumosu on Wednesday.

She gave the two guilty parties separate sentences of six months each for the first offense and a year each for the second count.

However, Odumosu gave the guilty a choice to pay a fine of N10,000 for each jail sentence as long as they could reimburse the complainant for the N606,000 they had been imprisoned.

The prosecutor, Olakunle Shonibare, told the court that the offences committed on January 24, 2023, contravened Sections 516(1) and 382(2) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State.

The charge read in part; “That you, Akinleye Adegoke, Adewole Adediran and others at large on January 24, 2023 at about 12noon at Abidelep Farm and Agro-Service Limited, Ilewo, Orile, Abeokuta in the magisterial district did conspire to commit felony and thereby committed an offence contrary and punishable under Section 516(1) of the Criminal Laws of Ogun State.

That you, Akinleye Adegoke, Adewole Adediran and others at large on the same date, time and place in the aforesaid magisterial district did steal 404 pieces of catfish valued at N606,000 property of one Mrs Sanusi Ibukun and thereby committed an offence contrary and punishable under Section 382(2) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State.”

Austin Faani, a Nigerian filmmaker and husband of popular actress, Chacha Eke-Faani, has shared his experience living with a mentally ill partner.

Recall that the mother of four, who has become a proud advocate for mental health issues, recently opened up during one of her outreach events about how she copes with suffering from bipolar disorder.

She revealed how she spent days hanging around on Lagos’s beaches, hotels, and streets. She continued by saying that she took a boat to Ghana using a fake ID.

The actress added that once when she felt frightened at home around three in the morning, she fled to an Asaba motor park and then went to Lagos.

Austin Faani shared his experience, describing how, at one in the morning, his wife had woken him up with a loud knock on the mirror. His wife, he stated, had to wake up and destroy the mirror because some individuals were creeping out of it.

Austin revealed that as his wife’s health deteriorated, he was forced to take her to church for prayers.

He spoke about the various places they had been together and the different things they had done to get her help before she was finally diagnosed.

Recall that the 33-year-old chef took viewers by surprise after requesting to leave the house barely two days after her entrance.

Lucy, who is a guest in the house and not competing for the N120million prize, shared her decision to exit the show during her first diary session with Biggie.

She cited her altercation with another houseguest, Kim Oprah, as the reason behind her choice to leave, stating that Kim accused her of acting like she knows it all during their task, which infuriated her.

Court sentences Yahoo boy to community service over $270 fraud

A Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Kubwa has sentenced one Abass Aminu Abdulkareem to community service term for a $270 scam.

The defendant was charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with one count of alleged internet fraud before Justice O. I. Adelaja.

Aminu received the money from Amanda, an American lady, by pretending to be her cousin on Facebook under the name Jeremiah Lincoln, the anti-graft agency alleged.

The EFCC stated that the offense violated Section 321 of the Penal Code Law (Laws of the Federation, Abuja) 1990 and was penalized under Section 324 of the same Law when it announced the Yahoo boy’s conviction through its official Twitter account.

The charge read, “That you, Abass Aminu Abdulkareem sometime in 2023 at Abuja within the jurisdiction of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory cheated by personation when you represented yourself on a Facebook profile page as Jeremiah Lincoln, a citizen of the United States of America and under that name obtained the sum of Two Hundred and Seventy United States Dollars ($270) from Amanda, a cousin to Jeremiah Lincoln and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 321 of the Penal Code Law (Laws of the Federation, Abuja) 1990 and punishable under Section 324 of the same Law.”

To the charge, the defendant entered a guilty plea. Following his plea, Justice Adelaja found Abdulkareem guilty and sentenced him to community service under the supervision of officers from the Nigerian Correctional Service.

The offender also surrenders to the federal government his iPhones 12 Pro and XR.

“Ifunanya not our member” – Aba NBA denies controversial lawyer

The Aba state chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has disputed claims that Ifunanya Excel Grant, a controversial Nigerian lawyer and social media ‘slay queen,’ is a member of the organization.

The denial was communicated through a formal statement issued by Innocent O. Egwu, Esq., the Chairman of the NBA in Aba, along with Secretary Mazi K.C. Okoro.

The bar was responding to rumors that the Aba Branch was Ifunanya’s NBA home.

“For the records, we wish to state categorically that Miss Ifunanya Excel Grant is not a member of the NBA, Aba Branch, and she is unknown to NBA, Aba Branch.

While we support every effort of our great association, the NBA, to rid the legal profession of the few bad eggs, we must request that painstaking efforts be taken by officers concerned to ensure that innocent and law-abiding practitioners are not unwittingly held out in bad light to the public,” the statement reads in part.

This came after calls for her to be prosecuted for inappropriate social media conduct involving drug abuse and nudity.

Recall that Ilebaye got into a heated argument with her fellow female housemates, Ceec, Princess, and her friend, Doyin, which resulted in her getting a double strike for violence.

Security guard fired for asking fans to take photos of him in front of Taylor Swift during her performance

A security guard who went viral for singing along during a Taylor Swift concert has revealed that he has been dismissed by the security firm he was working for.

Calvin Denker became a TikTok sensation after a video of him singing “Cruel Summer” during one of Taylor Swift’s performances in Minneapolis, Minnesota, went viral in June.

However, Denker recently disclosed on TikTok that he has been fired by the company he was working for at the time.

Though the company didn’t have a problem with his singing, the management expressed dissatisfaction with Denker for distributing notes to concertgoers, requesting them to share any photos or videos capturing him standing in front of Taylor Swift while she performed on stage behind him.

“Long story short, I was fired for it,” Mr Denker told his followers. “My former security company said that they had a rule against taking photos with any of their performers…

“Every photo of me from that night was from behind the barricade, like any other photo from a fan would be. I never took my own phone out. And above all else, I made sure that Taylor Swift was safe and all the fans had a good time.”

He, however, urged his followers not “to send any hate to this company… I still got to work one of the coolest concerts ever… so that is fantastic. And I hold no grudges against my employer.”

“I wasn’t allowed to turn my back to the crowd and really watch Taylor perform… After night one, I was realising how close Taylor Swift was getting to me so I really wanted to get a photo to document it.

A devoted supporter of Wizkid, also known as Ayodeji Balogun, has stirred reactions online after he permanently inked his leg in memory of Wizkid’s late mother.

Recall that Mrs. Jane Dolapo Balogun, mother of Wizkid, died suddenly on Friday, August 18, at about 1:30 a.m.

Sunday Are, Wizkid’s longtime manager, confirmed the tragedy and disclosed that Mrs. Balogun died suddenly early on Friday.

“Yes, she passed away this morning, around 1:30 am,” said Sunday Aaare.

The late Mrs. Balogun was also the mother of two other children, Yetunde Balogun and Lade Balogun.

Grammy award-winning Nigerian singer, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has angered netizens with his criticism of Afrobeats.

Burna Boy said that most Afrobeat musicians lack life experiences, which renders their music empty, in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe.

He characterized Afrobeat music as exciting and entertaining but devoid of real-life experiences.

Burna Boy characterized musicians as having their own ups and downs in life, including good days, terrible days, and difficult moments that surround the creation of music.

The self-acclaimed African Giant discussed the necessity for artists to incorporate real-life experiences into their works of art, noting that the genre is “literally nothing”.

“Because of where I am from. The sh*t I have to go through to maneuver and just stay with my crown on my head. (It is harder for people that know you best to love you the most). Because they do not know you best. You just think they do.

When you start going around the world and you start seeing that there are actually motherf**kers that know me a lot than the people that share the same (not experience)… because 90 per cent of them [Nigerian musicians] have no real life experiences which is why most of Nigerian music or African music or afrobeats as people call it, is mostly about nothing, literally nothing.

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old woman, Furera Abubakar, for the murder of her co-wife’s four-day-old baby in Bantu village, Ningi Local Government area of the state.

According to a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, the suspect applied a liquid insecticide called Gramalin on the unhealed umbilical cord of the newborn, leading to the baby’s tragic demise.

The incident reportedly occurred on August 19, 2023, just days to the scheduled naming ceremony of the child.

The statement reads,

“The incident was reported to the Ningi divisional police headquarters on the 19th of August, 2023 which revealed that the four-day-old baby was born on the 15th of August, 2023 and was murdered by the suspect Furera Abubakar on the 19th of August, 2023 before the naming ceremony,” the statement read.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is a co-wife to The nursing mother (victim’s mother). The suspect entered the co-wife’s room with insecticide liquid (Gramalin) and applied it to the unhealed baby’s umbilical cord.

“The liquid which was suspected to be corrosively affected, and led to the deterioration of the baby’s health eventually led to his death.

“The investigation is discreetly ongoing, after which the suspect will be profiled and charged in court accordingly.”
