Abducted Babcock Graduate released, Two Friends Arrested

1 (1) (1)

Babcock University graduate, Justina Anochie, who was kidnapped by gunmen last Sunday, has regained her freedom.

The Ogun State Police Command said it arrested two suspects in connection with the kidnap, adding that the abductors dropped her off in Odogbolu area of the state on Friday when they realized the police were closing in on them.

The police said no ransom was paid for her release.

However, a source said money was paid to the kidnappers, adding that she was in good health.

Justina finished her studies at the Babcock University in June, 2016. She was reported to have returned to her private residence in the university community, where some gunmen kidnapped her.

The family had told Punch that the kidnappers, after demanding N10m, later agreed to take N5m, adding that efforts to make them take N300,000 were turned down.

It was learnt that the suspects finally released her on Friday after collecting some money.

A family source said:

“She was released on Friday and the family paid money to the kidnappers. But I will not disclose the amount for security reasons. She is safe now. Four gunmen carried out the kidnap.”

But the state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said no ransom was paid for the release, adding that two suspects had been arrested.

He said immediately the case of Anochie’s kidnap was reported at the Ikenne division of the command, strategies to rescue her were put in place.

Adejobi, a Superintendent of Police, said the first suspect arrested assisted the police in getting the second suspect.

He said:

“Presently, the command, through its Anti- Kidnapping Squad of the Department of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence, Eleweran, Abeokuta, has two suspects who are ‘close friends’ of Anochie.”

He said the forensic investigation and Information Communication Technology skills adopted by the police in the rescue operation compelled the kidnappers to release the victim unhurt.

Adejobi said the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali, had ordered a thorough investigation into the matter and ordered that all the members of the kidnapping ring should be brought to justice.

“The CP also commended the relations of the victim for their patience and understanding during the rescue operation,” Adejobi said.

Housemaid Allegedly Shot At By Her Boss in Kano

maid-shot-0

Here’s how a Facebook User, IG Wala posted the story:

This woman was allegedly shot by the man that she is working in his house as a maid. The man named Jamilu (with a traditional title as Barden Kano) is said to be from a royal family in Kano but lives in Barnawa Area of Kaduna. In my attempt to know the story behind this photos. I spoke with a Lawyer/Activist in Kaduna who was following up this matter and this is what he said to me:

The man was taking an afternoon nap when his little daughter was crying. The cry woke him up and he asked after his wife and the wife was not in the house.

He blamed the Nanny for leaving the daughter. So, he brought out two guns (long and short), aimed at the Nanny and fired her. As she managed to step out from the house but, she fell down as a result of amount of blood she was bleeding. The man came down to plead with her and decided to take her to the hospital.

He then, quickly called one of the Community leader and told him what happened, the leader called the CP. Now, from all indications, the narrative is changing, the man is going round telling people that he was servicing his gun and the there was accidental discharge which shot at his maid. To cover up this issue, the Lawyer said Jamilu made offer to bribe his maid and the Community leader. THE WOMAN IS LYING HELPLESS IN THE HOSPITAL IN KADUNA.

“How Do I Tell My Husband He is Not the Father of ‘Our’ Son?”

I am so ashamed of this and it has made my life unbearable for me. I’m suicidal and I just don’t know how to fix this mess. I have a three-year-old son, when I got pregnant I thought my son was for my main man and not my other boyfriend.

I was proud to be pregnant and never had worries about who the father of my baby was.

When I got pregnant I was sure the baby was his cos I dumped the other guy and later he died.

However, problem started recently when I found out my husband has a daughter who was born 7 months after my son and the girl just resembles my husband like a photocopy and I started seeing difference in my son who suddenly looks nothing like my husband.

I see that my son could be the other guy’s. All these while, I didn’t think for once that my husband is not the father. My husband and my son have a very strong bond, they are so in love with each other. But, I fear what could happen if he finds out he is not actually his son.

I feel like a thief. I feel like I’ve committed the biggest sin in the world.

Everyday, I want to tell my husband about this but I’m scared. I’m so scared of the damage this issue might to do to us. I know his heart is going to break if he finds out. But what should I do?

Should I tell my husband the truth or just forget about it?

Woman Poisons Day-Old Stepson In Niger State

kxl

Barely one week after a woman severed her stepson’s penis, another woman has been arrested for trying to kill a two-hour old baby boy in Kopa village in Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State.

The 25-year-old suspect, Bilkisu Adamu Isah, said to be the second wife to the father of the little baby, was alleged to have committed the offence on Wednesday at about 7am.

The Sunday Telegraph learnt that at about 5am on the fateful morning the mother of the child, Suwebatu Kohageuto, who is also the senior wife, had been delivered of the baby boy. And barely two hours after the birth of the child, the suspect, Bilkisu Adamu Isah, was allegedly left alone to look after the new born baby in order to allow Suwebatu have her bath few hours after the umbilical cord of the baby had been separated from him.

An insider police source at the homicide section of the Niger State Criminals Investigation, Intelligent Department (SCIID) Minna said that no sooner that the suspect observed that the senior wife had started to bath that she went into her own room in the house, brought out a bottle of a locally made insecticide popularly called ‘Otapiapia’ and poured some into the mouth of the little child.

The source, who pleaded anonymity, said as soon as the suspect had poured the substance into the mouth of the boy that he began to foam and cried out hysterically, obviously in pain.

Surprisingly, the same suspect, who allegedly committed the act, was also said to have been the one that raised the alarm which attracted other members of the family, including the mother of the child. It was learnt that the family members were shocked at the strange occurrence and promptly made a distress call to the grandfather of the child, one Alhaji Mohammed Audu to come. And on arriving at the scene, the old man was said to have put his nose near the mouth of the boy and subsequently told the bewildered family members that he suspected that the boy might have been poisoned with ‘Otapiapia’ because that was the odour he perceived.

The Sunday Telegraph further learnt that in the midst of the confusion that engulfed the family as the boy was taken to the hospital, the suspect was said to have quietly escaped from the scene and ran to her father’s house in a nearby village, Gbedahan, in the same Bosso Local Government.

And on her arrival at her family house, she had confessed to her father that she poisoned her 2-hour old stepson with a view to killing him. However, her disappearance raised suspicion with her husband’s family because she did not tell anyone before she left. A delegation was sent to the suspect’s village where she allegedly confessed to her in-laws that she was responsible for the dastardly act, which she carried out due to her inability to give birth to a male child for her husband.

The 25-year-old suspect, and a mother of two female children, was promptly handed to the Niger State Police Command headquarters and where upon investigation, she confessed to the crime. Meanwhile, the little boy is said to be responding to treatment at the General Hospital Minna.

Actress Angry with Actor, Yul Edochie For Not Kissing Her

yul-edo

Nollywood actor Yul Chibuike Edochie, is tired of kissing ladies on set that he has to limit the kissing scenes he plays.

A man’s dislike: another man’ meat. While most actors are looking forward to free kissing, Yul is no longer excited about it until he got into trouble for not kissing a particular actress.

He said “At a point, I had to limit the kissing scenes I play. I know I did a lot of that while I was still young in the industry, but at the stage of my career, I reject a lot of roles that has to do with kissing and romancing. I can do romance scenes for you, perfectly without kissing. I can act that I am madly in love with a girl, without getting so romantic with her.”

He talked about the lady who was angry he didn’t kiss her “This is exactly what happens when you are not trained. It has actually happened to me and caused lots of issues on set. I know lots of actresses look forward to kissing me on set.”

He narrated his ordeal “This particular one, saw the script and was jumping that she was going to kiss ‘Yul Edochie’, but I was tired of the kissing thing and asked the director to allow me do it without the ‘kissing’. When the actress heard it, she was like ‘I have kissed so….so and so person’, but won’t do the same to her. She flared up. It was quite funny and annoying too.”

Two Elderly Women Allegedly Killed in Stampede Over Tinubu’s Ramadan Gifts

gift-600x400

Yesterday, two elderly women were reportedly killed during a violent struggle for Ramadan gifts distributed on behalf of a former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu at Onikan Stadium, Lagos.

According to PUNCH, there was a commotion yesterday at the stadium when the Iyaloja General of Nigeria and Tinubu’s daughter, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo shared some gift packs for the Ramadan which included a package of rice, salt, noodles, sugar and a sum of N1,500 to several people

An eyewitness, Musbau Adeyanju, claimed that during the distribution, some people became impatient and worried that the items won’t get to them; this was when the stampede occurred, killing the two women in the process.

“Their bodies were laid under a tent, while an ambulance that would carry them was being awaited. It was when the clothes that were used to cover their faces were removed that I discovered they were elderly women” said the witness.

A couple of other people who were also said to have been injured during the stampede, were rushed to the Marina General Hospital while the corpses of the deceased women were deposited at the hospital’s morgue.

An emergency official, who spoke to a correspondent of PUNCH on the condition of anonymity, also confirmed that there were casualties during the rush but didn’t give any information about fatalities.

However, the General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Michael Akindele, has denied knowledge of the deaths. “LASEMA did not get any report of such,” he said.

On the other hand, the Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, stated that there were no deaths recorded. “It was only a man who collapsed during the distribution who was immediately treated before taken to the general hospital” she said.

D’banj Secretly Weds Half-Caste Lady in Intimate Lagos Wedding

DBanj 35

In his April interview with Punch, the singer said his wedding would be a quiet one which no one would ever know of. However, trusted sources confirmed to bloggers Instablog9ja and Stella Dimkoko Korkus that the event was held on Saturday.

Here’s what Instablog9ja says:

“Dbanj allegedly got married secretly today . . According to inside sources, it was a court wedding at Onigbongbo, Lagos and only 20 people were in attendance. The reception was done at D’banj’s family house at Maryland, Lagos and cameras were strictly prohibited at the event which coincided with his father’s birthday. He allegedly got married to a yet-to-be-named half cast.”

SDK adds this:

“Today is Dbanj’ Father’s birthday and the 25 guests who were invited and attended thought they were going for a birthday party but were shocked when it turned out to be the Registry wedding between Dbanj and a yet to be named Lady……

The New Mrs Dbanj’s dad is an American and her mum is half Nigerian, half South African….Registry was at a secret venue and a small reception was at Dbanj’ house.”

Well, we will be on the look out for the photos.

How Lagos Ban Will Affect Us — Street hawkers

strs

Gov’t should provide jobs for us
I try not to hawk in Lagos again because of the disturbance from officials of the Kick Against Indiscipline.

If a total ban is what the Lagos State Government now places on hawking, then I cannot even consider hawking in the state again. We are suffering and there is no job to do.

I am not happy hawking educational and hairstyle posters. I want a good job that can take me away from the street. But there is nothing I can do if I am yet to get such a job.

I want the government to provide jobs for us. I cater for myself. The profit that I make on the posters that I hawk is not much. Each sells for N200. I will continue to pray and hope the situation improves in Nigeria.

I am from Anambra State and my family members are aware that I am not a lazy person. If I get a better job than this, I will do it. I stay in the sun from morning till evening. I have to hustle and I can’t steal.

I just pray that the same thing will not happen in other states across the country.
— Ogbonna

We are hustlers not thieves

I hope that the government has provided jobs for us before taking the decision. If the situation is going to continue that way, it means that I have to start thinking of when to return to Ebonyi State.

I have always wanted to go into rice farming. But why are our leaders so wicked? They were promising the unemployed monthly salary before the last election but everything changed after the election. Now, they want us not to hawk again.

I feed myself from the money I make. I do not have dependants but I cater for myself. I know that it is risky for us to be hawking on the road.

But how do we survive? We are not stealing. We are only trying to provide jobs for ourselves because the government has not been able to do so. In my own case, I have saved lives and continue to do so with what I hawk.

I hawk sausages while some hawk cold water in traffic. When drivers and passengers are hungry, they cannot get down from the car and find a place to eat.

They only look around to see if they can find anybody hawking what they quickly buy to eat till they get to their destinations.

Do you know how many lives would have been lost if these people have nothing to eat in traffic? I have saved more lives than whatever some of my colleagues did to warrant the decision.

It is true that they are our leaders but they should know that we would want to do other jobs if they are available than hawking and risking our lives in traffic.
— Sunday

Govt should pity us

I am not going to hawk in Lagos again if that is the new position of the state government on hawking. I would not want to go to jail. I also think it is bad for the government to take this kind of decision when it is aware that we are suffering.

Many of the things we sell in traffic will perish if we have to stay in one place to sell them.

For instance, I sell puff puff, which can get bad after few hours. We have to go out to look for customers and not the customers looking for us. I will be happy if the Lagos State Government can reconsider the decision and pity us.

It will make things easy for us. I prefer to struggle to survive than steal. I have nobody except God.
—Paul

I survive on hawking

I have a daughter and I am doing this work because I didn’t go to school. I cannot get a good job.

Hawking soft drinks is a way to survive for me and my daughter. Sometimes, I make N1,000 on a good day but sometimes even less than that.

Things are hard now and many people do not buy things from us as they used to do. I hope Governor Akinwunmi Ambode will pity us. He should not ban us from doing this job. This is the only trade I do.
— Maryam Akindele

I support my husband with hawking

I do not support the ban on hawking by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode because it does not help hawkers in any way.

I sell bottled water, drinks and sausage rolls to support my husband and take care of my daughter. Even at that, it is not easy for us.

If the governor wants us to stop this job, the state government should provide another job for us so that our families do not suffer.
— Aminat Taofeek

I feed three children as a widow

I don’t support the ban on hawking on the road by the Lagos State government. It will affect us because hawking is the only means of livelihood for me and my three children. My husband is late.

I would not be doing this kind of work if my husband was still alive but harsh circumstances forced me into it.

This trade is my source of livelihood. If the state government bans hawking, how do they want me and my children to feed and fend for ourselves? I don’t think it is fair on us.

If they want to ban hawking, then they should build a market for us where we can stay to sell our goods.
— Zainab Suleiman

Ambode should give me N100,000 for business

I have heard about the ban on hawking by the Lagos State Government. But I don’t really know what to say about it. I am confused.

Maybe the government feels it is a good thing, who am I to complain? But then, I think if the state government wants us to stop hawking our goods on the road, they should provide another source of livelihood for us.

I don’t mind if Governor Akinwunmi Ambode can give me like N70,000 or N100,000 to start a business. I won’t hawk again once I get the money as support. But for now, this is the only business I know how to do. Lagos State Government should help us.
— Bukky Wasilat

Ban’ll affect my family

My family feeds from the proceeds of hawking. How does the government want us to survive if they stop us from hawking? On a good day, I make about N800 or N1000 selling sausage rolls.

But every day, we are forced to pay the local government council N200 before we can ply our trade. Two hundred naira from the small amount we make every day is a lot. Not only that, it is from that amount that I pay for my transport fare daily. I hawk from Alagbado to Ikeja every day to sell my wares. At the end of the day, I only have a small amount as profit. The total ban on our trade will affect us greatly.

Ryan Giggs Leaves Manchester United After 29 years, Releases Statement Explaining Why

giggs

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs left his role as assistant Man U coach on Saturday after spending 29 years at the club- first as a player since the age of 14, then the last three years as an assistant coach under David Moyes and then Louis Van Gaal.

The Welshman, 42, has played more times for the club than anyone else in history and is the club’s most decorated player, having won every major honour in club football.

After Jose Mourinho’s appointment as coach, he felt it was the right time to leave. Read Ryan Giggs’ statement explaining why he left the club below:

“After 29 seasons at Manchester United as a player and assistant manager, I know winning is in the DNA of this club – giving youth a chance, and playing attacking and exciting football. It’s healthy to have high expectations, it’s right to expect to win. Manchester United expects, deserves, nothing less.

“This is why it is a huge decision for me to step away from the club that has been my life since the age of 14. It has not been a decision that I have made lightly. I’ll take away so many special memories as well as a lifetime of experiences that will, I hope, serve me well in the future.

“However, the time feels right and, although I have no immediate plans to step into management, it is where I want to be.

“I’ve been extremely fortunate in having two great managerial mentors; first in Sir Alex, who I’ve spent the majority of my life working with and learning from and who I believe will remain as football’s greatest-ever manager and in more recent times, Louis van Gaal, whose CV speaks for itself. The knowledge I have gleaned from them has been invaluable.

“I want to reiterate my thanks to the backroom staff and support teams at Manchester United I’ve worked with over the years. The results on the pitch are a reflection of the hard work off it. I would not have achieved the success I have without the dedication, sacrifice and commitment of these people in creating the best environment for the team to succeed.

“I want to congratulate José Mourinho on his appointment as manager of the world’s biggest club. There are only a handful of proven winners at the very highest level and José is unquestionably one of them. I know the fans will welcome him.

“My final thank you is to the fans. I cannot begin to tell you how much I will miss walking out at Old Trafford in front of you. It’s extremely difficult to say goodbye after 29 years. I have loved every minute both as a player and assistant manager. The support you have always shown me has been phenomenal; thank you.

“It’s time for a new chapter and a new challenge. I’m excited about the future – I’ve had the best apprenticeship into management anyone could ever ask for.”

Manchester United Executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward said: “Ryan’s place in the history of Manchester United is assured.

He has been a constant presence at the club since 1987 and, during his playing days, regularly delighted crowds; first with his dazzling wing play and later with his intelligence and ability to dictate a game.

“He has tackled his coaching and management responsibilities with similar rigour and diligence. The experiences and discipline he developed at United will undoubtedly be a big help as he continues to learn his trade. He has all the attributes to be a terrific manager in the future. Everyone at the club wishes him well in his new career. He will be missed but will always be welcome at Manchester United.”

Generator Fumes Kill Pastor 2 years After His wife, 4 Kids Died In Fire Incident

Kayoda-300x300

In a most saddening and pathetic twist of fate, 51-year-old Pastor John Kayoda of Christ Apostolic Church, Warri, who lost his entire family, a wife and four adorable children, to fire incident on September 25, 2014, died on June 26, 2016, as a result of inhalation of generator fumes.

The deceased who was recently transferred from Warri to Love District, Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Ekapamre in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State a fortnight ago was residing in Agbarho, his home town when the incident occurred.

Sources told Sunday Sun reporter that the deceased, an Urhobo, had placed the generator in the corridor of his residence and slept off. Residents of Agbarho were saddened and grieved when news filtered in that the pastor was killed by generator fumes.

Reacting to the unfortunate incident, the Chairman of the Coordinating Council of Christ Apostolic Church, Warri District, Pastor Emmanuel Orode, described the incident as shocking, mysterious and bad omen.

“This is beyond human comprehension that Pastor John Kayoda, who lost his entire family of five while attending a general meeting of pastors at Ikeji Arakeji in Osun State, September 2014 has also died almost in the same circumstance,” Pastor Orode said in tears.

“God has his own programme for everybody, which cannot be changed by any mortal. However, it is unfortunate that he died in this circumstance. But, who are we to question the authority of God Almighty,” enthused the CAC Cleric.

“Above all, we thank God for his courage because when his family died, he did not lose courage. He was even stronger in the Lord. However, we give glory to God Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth,” he said as tears continued to flow freely and wet his collar.

He said the late pastor was posted from CAC Otumara, Olu’s Palace Warri to Ekekpamre, less than two weeks ago before he died.

“We are really sad, very sad over the painful demise of this strong, energetic and courageous young man. Now that the evil men have done their worst, they have nobody to kill again,” said the chairman, insisting that it is God that brings and takes life of human beings.

Orode noted that Pastor Kayoda’s name and achievements would remain in the annals of history of Christ Apostolic Church worldwide and in the mind of fellow Nigerians as well. The kinsmen of the deceased are still numb, shocked and inconsolable. Many of them were so moody and dumbstruck they just waved away effort to get a word from them.

One of his aunts, Mrs. Faith Ederi who lives at Orerokpe gazed at ceiling without saying anything particular to anybody.

Then at a point she turned towards the reporter and said: “Oga journalist, you can see that the evil people who are after the life of my brother have done their worst but we leave everything to God.”

Meanwhile Agbarho is wearing a sad mood, lamenting the untimely death of the pastor who they described as their illustrious son.

“I Slept With You Only Once & Not 5 Times” – 47 year old Man to 6 year old

suspect

A 47-year-old security guard, identified as Victor Osubie, is in police custody for allegedly defiling a six-year-old girl, Bola (not real name), in Sagamu Road, Ikorodu, Lagos.

It was alleged that the suspect, who works at an events centre used by the victim’s mother as an event planner, slept with Bola severally. But the bubble burst on May 30, 2016, when he reportedly slept with the victim.

Sunday Vanguard learned that Victor had intercourse with the victim after she returned from an errand. He allegedly took the kid inside his room, asked her to pull her clothes and then had intercourse her.

The victim was taken to Ikorodu General Hospital for medical examination which confirmed that she had bad intercourse severally.

The case was reported at Sagamu Police Division, Ikorodu Road but the suspect allegedly fled when the police came to arrest him. He was, however, arrested, penultimate Wednesday, while the case was transferred to the State Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCIID, Panti for further investigation.

Narrating how she was allegedly slept with by the suspect, the Basic Two pupil said: “Uncle Victor called me to help him buy MTN N100 recharge card for him. When I went to the place where they sell the recharge card, the people were not around. So I went back to give him his money. After giving him his money, he called me back, asked me to pull my pants and he put his manhood inside my private part. Uncle has done it five times to me. The first time was after my graduation ceremony (from kindergarten) last year July.”

The mother also spoke. She said: “While I was in the hall on that fateful day trying to put finishing touches to the decoration for an event, my little daughter walked up to me and said she couldn’t find her elder sister Bola. “Immediately I began to search for her. I went outside the hall to look for her; I didn’t see her, so I came back to the hall.

“Later I saw her walking out of one of the rooms attached to the gallery used by the security guard, Victor. As she got close to where I was, she kept saying, `Mummy, please doesn’t tell my daddy. Mummy, please doesn’t tell my daddy’. I promised her I won’t tell her daddy. But I noticed she was really scared. When she got close me, I held her and I asked her what the matter was. I was shocked when she opened up and alleged that Victor, the security guard whom I have helped countless times, had repeatedly had intercourse with her.

“Immediately, I confronted Victor, who said he was sorry and that he didn’t know what came over him when he slept with my daughter. I told him it was not a matter of he was sorry, and that it was not something that happened once. I called my husband to inform him about the incident and he asked me to report the case to the police. When I got to the police station, they took my daughter to Ikorodu General Hospital for medical examination.

“I thank God who used my little daughter to draw my attention to what had been happening. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have known that he had been taking advantage of my daughter since last year. I guess Victor felt because I was busy, I won’t notice that my daughter was not around.”

Suspect’s story

Looking dejected, the suspect, whose wife and kids are said to be resident in Delta State, said: “I was mad when I did it. I didn’t know what came over me. What will my family and friends say when the news gets to them that I had intercourse with a six-year-old? My wife and kids are in Delta State. I live alone in Lagos. It is only once that I did it.”

Nigerians Living Around Cemeteries Share Scary Tales on What It Feels Like To Live Near a Graveyard

ceme

15-year-old Oguntuase James, who is one of thousands of Nigerians residing near the cemetery, and always see ambulance bringing a corpses for interment at the cemetery which is located just beside his parents’ house on Bashiru Adedeji Street, Ayobo, Lagos, has disclosed to a correspondent what if feels like to live very close to a graveyard.

“It is not easy living near a cemetery. Once it’s about late evening, we don’t open the door for strangers here unless we know the person, to avoid receiving an unwanted visitor and this is evening time when all kinds of things happen,” he added.

James disclosed that the experience one of his neighbour friend had few years ago haunts him till date. According to him, the old friend who he identified as Segun, claimed to have seen some ghosts who beckoned to him in the middle of the night. Not only did Segun run away from the spot, he never returned to the house, such that his friends had to help him pack his things.

He said,

“Someone once lived close to us here. He was working in Ikeja, so he used to come back late. But there was one night he came back very late and he was fetching water outside around 1am, when he suddenly ran inside, saying he saw a dead person beckoning to him to come. Initially, people thought he was imagining things in his mind, but he couldn’t sleep throughout that night and since he left the following morning, he never came back. People had to help him pack his things and took them to him.

“And since that day, I have been noticing some strange things anytime I’m home alone, like someone opening the door, gentle wind blowing across my room occasionally and some things I can’t really explain. These days, I don’t sleep alone unless my parents are there.”

James sees nothing interesting living in the area, even though he enjoys the quietness and serenity some other Lagos residents would crave for.

“Anytime I set my eyes on that place, there is a way my head swells and I want to run away but we are stuck here because my parents don’t have money to relocate. I don’t have friends who come here to visit me because of where I live and there is no other way one can describe this house without mentioning cemetery; it’s like the landmark here. In fact, a friend once told me I live among the dead.”

James, who had just finished his Senior School Certificate Examination, said he could not wait to leave the area and go to school, given the psychological and emotional torment he had suffered seeing graves almost every day. The situation is so bad that only a handful of his friends know his house because of the fear of the cemetery.

“We have seen many things here but what can we do. If people come to bury corpses here, we always see them and sometimes it could be more than once in a day. Some people don’t even come with casket, while some would wash the corpse on this road (pointing to the road that is few metres away from their entrance). I have seen people washing corpses on that road before but there was nothing we could do. I am tired.”

James’ family’s experience aptly captures the experience of many people living in this area, and there are a number of them. The one beside James’ house is tucked inside Ayobo in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State. For many families in this area, they said if they had known the place would become a cemetery, they would never have considered living there.

Mrs. Funmi Awoyale could not hide her dislike for what had become of the quiet area she and her family moved into years ago. Not only is she constantly disturbed seeing the site, her children had been psychologically traumatised several times, that she sends them to live with her siblings anytime they are on leave.

“My little girl, who is about ten years old, would not sleep alone at night, likewise her brother who is five. They are all very scared and they want us to leave this area. it is not that they have seen any walking corpse yet, but their imagination is unsettling them,” she added.

For some others, like Mr. Joel, the initial fears about living close to the dead may have reduced, coupled with his belief that anyone pronounced dead is dead forever, but he certainly won’t forget the day he claimed he saw some of his ‘neighbours’ in his dream.

Joel, who appeared to be in his late 40s said,

“When I was young, my maternal grandfather was buried inside the house, and we the children would place our mat on the grave and sleep. So I was never used to having excessive fears about dead people, more so that I’m older now, but I won’t forget the day I saw them in my dream.

“There were times I saw them in my dream, I would challenge them and ask where they were going. They were usually in procession. They said they weren’t coming to me and that I should leave them alone. So I left them truly.”

Joel said even though he had been trying to teach his children how not to be afraid, it seems they wouldn’t have any of that as they would not pass the narrow pathway that runs through the cemetery unless he was with them.

He said,

“There was a day I was going out with the children and we met some people bringing a corpse. My children froze and they wanted to run back but I held them. They are getting used to it, but they still have fears. We have to live with it because it wasn’t there when we moved here.”

“Yes, people who are dead are gone, but if you dump refuse on a grave, they would give it back to you but you might not see them. All age groups are represented in this cemetery; from one-day old to aged people.”

Joel however condemned a situation whereby people wash the corpses on the road in front of people’s houses. “Some people see us as abnormal but there is nothing we can do and that is why we rarely have visitors,” Joel concluded.

One other resident, Mr. Ige who wouldn’t mind sharing her experience said her fears began when she moved into the area newly and the only usable path was between two graves.

“Anytime we approached that place, my head would swell, as if those dead persons would just rise and flog me. I never saw any walking corpse but passing through the cemetery is not fun, especially when you have visitors,” she said.

She recalled that there were times she would board motorcycles and the bikers would literally turn back on approaching the cemetery.

“An okada man once asked me if I lived in the burial ground, because he saw me going farther into the cemetery, not knowing there is a path beside it that leads to my house. Some would even leave the money because they see you as a ghost and they would run away.

“Some would refuse to go further once you start approaching the place. One of them once dropped me in the middle of the road beside the site and sped back immediately. He was screaming as if he was seeing ghosts coming to slap him. He almost had an accident that day.

“My children are traumatised because we could be coming home and we would see people washing corpses in the middle of the road. If the deceased is a Muslim, some people would lay the person in the middle of the road and pray (Janaza) for the person right there, tie the person with rope, the way they do, before the interment. Our children see these things and they wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.”

Some residents on Bashiru Adedeji Street and those at the extreme of Legacy Road in Ayobo are constrained to live with the influx of the dead into their abode, an obvious site that welcomes everyone into Jinadu in Shofunde area of Agege Lagos is the assemblage of cemeteries in the area.

Just opposite one of the cemeteries is Udemezue Chimah, disclosed that his major concern was how to raise money to get another apartment and vacate his cemetery-ridden abode.

“I have had nightmares countless times, even my wife. Night time is usually a dreadful time for me and my wife. Do you know how it feels when you wake up to pee in the middle of the night and you feel like someone is pursuing you and you start looking behind you because behind the wall is a cemetery. It is frustrating.

“There is no how we can raise children here, so we need to move out before we can start having children. There was a time my brother came to spend holiday here, he ran away the following day, and even that night, he couldn’t sleep throughout. Anytime I remember the money I spent to rent this house, I felt cheated by the estate agent because he never told us and we never saw them as he instructed us not to use the route.

“The day I learnt there were cemeteries here, I almost fainted. I felt like going mad, you know that kind of a thing. Since then, as old as I am, I run anytime I’m passing the road, because the cemetery is on the left, right and front. Even though they are all fenced, when I’m coming back from work in the night, I usually wait to see other people going towards the same direction because I can’t pass through the place alone. If after some time I still don’t see others, I would go through the other route, which is longer.

“Sometimes, if you board a motorcycle, the riders sometimes hesitate once you tell them the street, and if they agree, they zoom off immediately you alight.”

Speaking on the effect of living close to a cemetery, a psychologist, Dr. Adepeju Omoteso, said the fears attached to such are mere imaginations. She said, “That is what we call phobia. People have phobia for many things and one of them is fear of the dead. It also depends on the culture. Some people believe that if someone dies prematurely, the dead person might come back to hurt people. But as a psychologist, I don’t believe in it.”

On whether it is appropriate for cemeteries to be sited in residential areas, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, said that government was also concerned with the development and that urgent intervention was on the way.

He added, “This is because there is a law on that, for obvious cultural and religious reasons, but people have not shown respect for that. One of the things government is thinking of is the need to have a taskforce on compliance with the law, to ensure that this is addressed once and for all. With the cooperation of the citizens, we will achieve this.”
