Iconic football star, Lionel Messi had difficulties holding back his emotions as he confirmed his exit from Barcelona after 21 years at the club in an emotional press conference on Sunday.

Messi, 34, has been a free agent since July 1 after his contract at Camp Nou expired, although he had verbally agreed on a new deal on reduced wages only for the Catalan club to pull the plug.
Barcelona on Thursday, August 5, confirmed that Messi would not sign a new contract with the Spanish club amid financial concerns āand structural obstaclesā which prevented Messi from renewing.
Speaking at a press conference from Camp Nou, which was attended by the entire first-team squad past players ā including Xavi and Carles Puyol, Messi said he was keen to continue at Barcelona and did āeverything he couldā to stay but it was not possible.

āI donāt know what to say here,ā he began. āThese recent days Iāve been thinking, giving lots of thought to what I could say, and the truth is that I canāt think of anything. This is really difficult for me after so many years being here my entire life.
āIām not ready for this and honestly last year with all the nonsense with the burofax and everything, I knew what I wanted to say. But this year, this year is not the same. This year my family and I were convinced that we were going to stay here, that we were going to stay at our home ā thatās what we wanted more than anything.
āWe always made this our home, we were at home, and we thought we would be staying here in Barcelona. The time weāve had here in the city has been amazing. But wow, today I have to say goodbye to all of this.

āIām been here so many years, my entire life, since I was 13. After 21 years Iām leaving with my wife, with my three little Catalan-Argentine kids and I canāt tell you everything weāve lived in this city and I canāt say that in a few years we wonāt come back, because this is our home and I promised my children that.
āIām just really grateful for everything, all my teammates, all my former teammates, everyone at the club, everyone who has been by my side. Thereās so many people, even some I only met a few times. I have so much respect.
āSo many beautiful things have happened ā also some bad things ā but all of this helped me to grow, helped me to improve, and made me the person that I am today. I gave everything for this club, for this shirt, from the first day I arrived until the very last.
āThe truth is Iām leaving. Iām so grateful for the care people have shown me, Iād love to be able to go in a different way. I never imagined having to say goodbye because I never thought of it.

āEspecially I imagined it with people on the pitch, the last cheers, but weāve not been able to play in front of the fans this past year because of the pandemic and itās been difficult not to hear their cheers, not to have them nearby, not to hear them shouting my name.
āAnd I leave this club now without seeing the fans for over a year and a half. If Iād have imagined it, Iād have imagined the Camp Nou full, being close to people and being able to say goodbye properly. But it has to be this way.ā
Messi moved to Catalunya from Rosario as a 13-year-old and enjoyed enormous success at the club, winning 10 La Liga titles, four Champions League crowns, and the Ballon dāOr six times.
