Popular Nigerian actress and founder of ROK  TV channels, Mary Njoku has expressed her candid thoughts on why women should not be compelled to change their surnames after years of building it because of divorce. A woman has the right to keep the name and asking her to change her name is like stealing her copyright.

Sharing on her Instagram, the actress criticized the act of compelling women to change their surnames after divorce from their husbands whilst giving an exception, if the woman is allowed to change her underaged kids’ name as well.

She captioned the post;

Besides, some wives have been responsible for putting their surnames on the map. Asking them to drop it is like stealing her copyright. Except she wants to. 🙌🏿🙌🏿

She further stated that change of name should be optional and a woman should not be pressured especially when she had built the name for years.

Mary Njoku wrote;

If marriage ends, change of name should be OPTIONAL biko. Someone cannot build a Name for many years and be asked to change it just because Oga no wan do again. A mother shouldn’t be compelled to have a different name from her underaged kids. Except she is allowed to change their names too.
