The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has blamed the shooting of peaceful protesters at the Lekki toll gate Tuesday evening by security agents believed to be soldiers on “forces beyond his control.”
The governor, who said Tuesday evening was the toughest night of “our lives,” said the shooting leaves dark notes in the history of the state.
Mr Sanwo-Olu, who posted the statement on Twitter early Wednesday morning, shared pictures of himself visiting those injured in the shooting.
This may be the toughest night of our lives as forces beyond our direct control have moved to make notes in our history, but we will face it.
As a Father and Governor, I watched in anguish the unacceptable event that occurred last night at the Lekki tollgate.
The decision to impose curfew was borne out of concern for innocent protesters and the entire citizenry of our dear state. It will be foolhardy for a leader to try to protect his citizens and still turn around to put their lives at risk.
However, this is not the time to trade blames. We will take it in our stride and move.
I paid a visit to all the victims of the unfortunate shooting incident at the various hospitals where they are being urgently attended to.
There are currently 10 patients at the General Hospital in Lagos Island, 11 at Reddington hospital and 4 at Vedic hospital with mild to moderate levels of injuries, while 2 are receiving intensive medical care. And 3 patients have been discharged.
I implored the attending doctors to give them the best care, while we cover all their medical bills.
We are working with the Federal Govt to harmonize and stabilize all security operations while prioritizing the lives of the residents we swore to protect and serve.
I would also be giving a statewide address in a few hours.
We will come out stronger.

Not long after the photos were shared, the lights around the Lekki toll gate were put off and gunshots were fired at the End SARS protesters.
Nigeria is going through one of its worst times and its getting really bad.
Reports reaching us this evening confirm that the Lekki-Toll Gate was set on fire, shortly after seven peaceful #ENDSARS protesters died from gunshot wounds sustained when Nigerian Armed forces opened fire.

Lagos State Governor. Babajide Sanwo-Olu revealed that imposing the 24-hour curfew on the state following the increasing spate of violent attacks by hoodlums, was a difficult decision to make.
In a post shared on his social media page on Tuesday evening, October 20, Sanwo-Olu said was very impressed with the #EndSARS protests when it started initially but he is now saddened by the fact that hoodlums have hijacked the protest and seized it as an opportunity to carry out wanton destruction.
See his post below ;
”The total breakdown of law and order by hoodlums who unleashed mayhem on innocent citizens and our dear state, prompted our decision to impose the 24 hour curfew.
I identify wholeheartedly with the #endsars protesters, and made sure Lagos state created a habitable environment for them to air their grievances and complaints without intimidation. I immediately swung into action as soon as I was presented with their demands. Changes that could be made immediately were done. And the ones that required a process, were kickstarted.
I watched keenly as humanity and love for one another thrive during the protests. A groundnut seller received life changing funds to grow her business, Jane got a prosthetic leg, people who lost their personal items got them back, new friendships were formed, protests grounds were tidied at the end of each day. Those actions made me proud and I was glad that Lagos state had set herself apart.
However, it is sad to see what was meant to be a life changing, boundary breaking, swift decision making, and status quo changing movement turn into a total bedlam by people who do not know the reasons why the protests started in the first place.
I watched these heartbreaking videos, and as Governor, history will not be kind to me if I fold my hands and allow arsonists, hoodlums, and anarchists hide under the guise of the #endsars protests to wreak havoc on the state, and put the lives of the very people I swore to protect in danger.
Imposing this curfew was difficult, especially as we have just returned from a COVID19 required lockdown. This curfew will allow security officials to immediately restore order to the state, and arrest the miscreants that have disrupted the peaceful protests.”
Viral reports and videos making the rounds on social media shows the sad moment Nigeria’s armed forces opened fire on peaceful #ENDSARS protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate.
According to some reports, four persons have died as a result of the shooting.
Nigerians have bemoaned this situation and they took to social media to strongly condemn it.

According to him, real believers wouldn’t rejoice over money which they didn’t work for, but will rather proceed to the bank for proper investigations about the money.
In his words;

Suspected hoodlums in Ajegunle have set ablaze Layeni Police Station at Ifelodun Local Council Development Area of Lagos state.
This is coming moments after thugs burnt down Orile police station in the state, which resulted in the government suspending all forms of protest in Lagos, and announced a 24-hour curfew.
The incident is reported to have occurred around 11am Tuesday, October 20.
An eyewitness simply identified as Ladipo said at least eight people were injured in the attack.
He stated that the hoodlums heard that policemen were killing their people in Iganmu, which fueled their agitation to burn down the police station.

One time president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo has advised president Buhari on how to handle the ongoing #EndSARS demonstrations in the country.
According to Obasanjo, Buhari should address the demands of the aggrieved youths, and show that his administration understands their plight.
Obasanjo, who spoke in Ile Ife, during a visit to Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi palace, noted that, the youths are frustrated due to lack of opportunities.
In his words,
More than 65 percent of our population are between the ages of 18 and 30. They are not only struggling to acquire education, they are also aspiring for the best that life can offer them.
Some of them didn’t even get educated while those who are educated are getting frustrated because of lack of opportunities. We must realize that the lid on the boiling steam would have to be removed.
But, I believe that there are windows of opportunity which the government can explore to show that it cares about the people’s welfare, especially the youths, as the father of the country and particularly, as the father of the youth.
Fortunately, the president has children and he knows how youths behave. I believe that the opportunities can still be taken to let the youths know that he, as a father, understands their plight and his government understands their plight and he is ready to make life better for them.
The Nigerian Senate has called on President Buhari to urgently address the nation so as to douse the tension in the country.
This comes as hoodlums continue to carry out various attacks on #EndSARS protesters and others in some parts of the country.
The Senators made the call for President Buhari to speak to the Nation after a motion was moved by Senator Biodun Olujimi and co-sponsored by all Senators on the ongoing nationwide protests believed to have been hijacked by hoodlums.
Part of the resolution of the Senators after deliberation include;
Urge all tiers of government to put in place and sustain policies of social economic reforms that raise the standard of lives of our people;
Call upon the Police to operate strictly in accordance with the rules of engagement appropriate in a democratic environment;
Urge the Inspector General of Police to ensure a holistic comprehensive reforms of the police to increase the overall welfare including training and medical insurance of all members of the Nigeria Police Force

Appeal to #EndSARS movement and protesters to kindly in the interest of everyone stop their actions and embrace genuine dialogue; 7. Urge Mr. President to address the nation as soon as possible on these issues.
Police should make it a duty to accompany protesters and should be involved in protecting genuine protesters.

Reacting to this, Nigerian singer, Peruzzi asked Adamu not to disgrace himself as his motive is not “fresh” at all. He then asked him to think deeply about it and maybe ask another person to think for him if his brain is weak.

Here’s what Adamu wrote to Jack Dorsey,
Dear @jack
Sequel to my earlier message to you on meddling in Nigerian affairs where you actively supported, encouraged funding & sponsorship of #EndSars protest, should it lead to breaking of law & order, we’ll meet in court
I’d like to inform you to get set & face me in court
As you maybe aware, Nigeria is currently going through several issues regarding breaking of law and order in many cities, from prison break, to burning of a mall, destructions of properties and even lives.
These actions should never be left without its attendant consequences.
You must be prepared to pay for the damages caused as a result of these protest-turned riots
It’s important for you to know that Nigeria is a country governed by law & order, you should be prepared to face our justice system to ascertain our level of democracy you wish to injure
Your meddling into a sovereign Nation, against the international principle of Right to Protect vested on democratically elected government, your gross abuse of previledge by using your platform to inflame an otherwise tensed country, putting our people at risk should be answered.
You must be prepared to:
1. Pay fine and compensate for the damage you have caused this country.
2. Open a local office in Nigeria, employ local labor, pay local tax to continue to operate in Nigerian internet space.
3. Publish a written apology to Nigerian people & Government.
Furthermore, since the Berlin conference, where African future was “shared” among the European Powers, African was absent & silent. We will no longer be silent in the 21st Century any longer.
You shall have to understand that Africa is a continent of law & traditions & customs.
You cannot colonize us by using our resources in the 19th Century, Colonize our industries in the 20th Century and now colonize us using information war on your scheming for a divide and rule by chaos, uprising and disorder.
Nigeria and Nigerians cannot allow that to happen.
From Kano to Kalabari, Oyo to Kororofa, Arochukwu to Zaria, Benin to Bornu, Sokoto to Ife to Borgu, Nigeria is a nation with Kingdoms, Empires & peopled with History and values, If you cannot mutually treat us as a fellow humans of one community, we shall not let you destroy us.
As a Nigerian Citizen, a committed patriot and a stakeholder in the Nigerian Project, you shall meet me in court to answer for your meddling in the affairs of a sovereign Nation without
@UN
council resolution.
As a private citizen, you have to and should face the consequences.
Due to the attacks on innocent Nigerians and police officers, the Lagos State Police Command has placed a ban on all gatherings and protest across the state henceforth.
The state police announced this in a media release issued on Tuesday by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
The statement read: “The Lagos State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that henceforth no protest or gathering or possession, under whatever guise, is permitted within Lagos State.”
“In the light of the above, all security agencies have deployed adequate personnel to take charge and enforce the curfew across the state.”
This comes after an imposition of a 24 hours curfew in the state.
Hoodlums have again hijacked what was supposed to be a peaceful protest in Lagos, and burnt down Orile police station in the state.
The incident which occurred today, October 20th, has resulted in the state government suspending all forms of protest in Lagos, as announced a 24 hour curfew.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State police spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi stated that many of its officers were injured in the attack while an unconfirmed report claims one of them is dead.
In his words,
Due to the new development of violent attacks on police officers and men and formations including innocent Nigerians in Lagos State, and the 24 hour curfew imposed by the Lagos State Government with effect from 4pm of today 20th October, 2020, the Lagos State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that henceforth no protest or gathering or possession, under whatever guise, is permitted within Lagos State.
In the light of the above, all security agencies have deployed adequate personnel to take charge and enforce the curfew across the state.
In the same vein, the command regrets to confirm the setting ablaze of Orile Police State today at about 10am, where some of our policemen were critically injured and unconfirmed reports state that one of them is dead.
Its crystal clear that the Endsars protest has been hijacked by hoodlums who want to run down the state and the police command will resist such state of anarchy, unrest and brouhaha with all powers within the ambit of the law.
While the command is resolute in sustenance of human rights and democratic tenets, the general public is hereby warned to comply with the curfew and desist from any act of violence in the state as the command will resist such in totality.
