NECO postpones 2020 exams indefinitely

The National Examination Council (NECO) has announced the indefinite rescheduling of the ongoing Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination.

In a statement released by the Head, Information and Public Relations Division, NECO, Azeez Sani stated that the decision to indefinitely suspend the examination followed the current turn of events in the country.

According to the statement, the mayhem have disrupted the smooth conduct of examinations in some parts of the country, due to imposed curfew and closed down of schools in some states which have made it difficult for the Council to move examination materials.

He assured the public that the examination body would continue with the conduct of the examination in all states as soon as normalcy returns to the country.

The statement reads,

“The Governing Board of the National Examinations Council (NECO) at its Special Meeting held on Thursday, 22nd October 2020 reviewed the on-going 2020 SSCE(Internal) nationwide.

“The Council had in a press release, dated 21st October 2020, informed the general public of rescheduling some papers of the 2020 on-going SSCE.

“Arising from that meeting, the Governing Board resolved that the 2020 SSCE(Internal) be postponed indefinitely in view of the current security challenges, occasioned by the ENDSARS protests, which disrupted the smooth conduct of the examinations in some parts of the country.

“In making this decision, the Board noted that due to these security challenges: Some state governments imposed a curfew and closed schools in order to safeguard lives and property; In the circumstances, it has become difficult for the Council to move examination materials across the country; Students in the affected locations were unable to sit for the papers already scheduled in the examination time table.

“The Governing Board further resolved, that when normalcy returns, the Council will continue with the conduct of the examinations in all States. “While regretting any inconveniences this postponement may cause our esteemed stakeholders, the Council has however taken this decision in order to maintain the integrity and security of its examination procedures for seamless conduct of the Council’s examination.”

Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare explains why Buhari did not talk about Lekki shooting

Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare has explained why President Buhari did not speak on the Lekki toll gate shooting, in his state of the nation address on Thursday, October 22nd.

Sunday Dare in an interview on Arise TV disclosed that the President has ordered an investigation into the incident, adding that Buhari wants to have all the facts which will be made public.

In his words,

“For sure, the president has ordered an investigation. He had a national security meeting yesterday. I can tell you that this is already ongoing because the president wants to have all the facts which will absolutely be made public.

“It is important to get all the facts right before we go forward, in this case. It’s going to be difficult to hide these facts because we live in a multimedia world and we have pieces of evidence and corroboration and I think it is important to get the facts right.

“I think that’s the part the president has towed and I am sure that when the facts are made available, this president – because he has integrity – will level with the Nigerian people about what happened on Tuesday in Lekki.

“Previously, we just had lip service that SARS scrapped. For the first time, you have a presidential pronouncement that SARS has been dissolved followed by the inspector-general and then we saw quick steps thereafter.

“And I think when you look at what has happened in the past and the level of responsiveness and concrete steps, the whole five demands of the youth were wholeheartedly accepted by the president and he set up a process”.

#EndSars : ”At a point, the protests got out of control” – Williams Uchemba

Williams Uchemba.

In a chat with Sunday Scoop, the actor opined that the demonstrations began to derail as some protesters turned it to a party at Toll gate. He also said the protests should have climaxed on the Friday the candlelight vigil was held and the next thing would have been to strategize to make sure the already-met demands be implemented.

In his words ;

“It is about control. That is why you have brakes in your car. It is to know when to stop or slow down, and when to accelerate. At a point, the protests got out of control. They started doing parties at the toll gate. We were all asking for the same thing – basic amenities.

“I know, constitutionally, you cannot use curfews to stop a protest. But maybe, we could have tried to work with the government just for that day. There was peer pressure on most of my colleagues. I know some of them that were pressurised to go out on the streets, even when the government had given us airtime. The pressure was more from the fans.

We had it at some point and I was telling people that the climax of the protest would have been the candlelight vigil. The next day should have been about strategy. It should have been about ‘what is the next thing? Now, we have those people where we want them.”

Lekki Shooting: I didn’t see any dead bodies — Filmmaker Onesoul reveals

Movie director, Ideh Chukwuma Innocent popularly known as Onesoul, has stated that he did not see any dead bodies at the Lekki shooting scene on Tuesday, October 20th.

Onesoul who also claimed to be present at the Lekki toll plaza at the time of shooting, noted that it’s wrong to term the incident “massacre” as he did not witness any death.

The scriptwriter told Premium times that he took to the risk to rescue injured protesters from the scene.

In his words,

“I have been hearing people say “Lekki massacre, Lekki massacre.”

I have to be honest with you if you Google the term “massacre,” massacre is a situation where a group of people were being killed by rebels or the military and going by that particular point, I would have been able to tell you that I saw a lot of dead bodies, this is how they killed them, there were a lot of dead bodies and so it was a massacre.

But from the time I came, I didn’t see any dead bodies but I can certainly tell you that there was a shooting, an unauthorised shooting. I will call it a raid, I will call it assault. I am going to term it assault and raid.

That is what I would use. It was an assault and I may be wrong but because I didn’t see those bodies, and I have not seen a family member that has come to cry and say one two or three persons have died.

If DJ Switch had seen that, she’s in the best position to say that because she was there. I cannot say she’s wrong. I was out of that circle. I was a few meters away. They were at the toll gate and I was a few meters away from them. I wasn’t there, I was at Lekki Phase 1.

I can’t tell you what the military’s approach on their arrival was. So, I wouldn’t be able to tell you that they shot one, two, three, four, or five people. But I can certainly tell you that I took a lot of gunshot victims to the hospital.

If I took about 13 people to the hospital myself, minus the ones that the governor confirmed that were injured, he said about thirty, that is forty-something, DJ Switch might not be wrong. I took 13 to the hospital.

So, if DJ Switch said she saw 15 dead people, by her own records, because she was there so she can speak on that part. I can’t speak on that.”

“I didn’t go nowhere, I am a Lagosian, I still hold the title of Asiwaju of Lagos and I am still the JAGABAN” – Tinubu

All Progressives Congress chieftain, Bola Tinubu has declared that he’s still the Asiwaju of Lagos as well as JAGABAN.

The Billionaire made this statement during a visit to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the State House in Marina.

Asked about his whereabouts in the past few days, Tinubu said, “I didn’t go nowhere; I’m a Lagosian and I still hold the title of Asiwaju of Lagos and I am still a Jagaban.

“Fake news is all over the place. They say Seyi my son was kidnapped and was chased but look at him. I didn’t pay a penny to bring him here.”

Speaking on Saturday, Tinubu stressed the need for a thorough investigation into Tuesday night attack.

He said, “First, we have to segregate the calendar – those who suffered casualty before the protests from the hands of SARS. You have to separate that from those who suffered casualty due to what happened at the toll gate.

“For those who suffered casualty from SARS, the Commission of Inquiry that is already set up will unearth that and will make their recommendations. I trust the calibre and the character of the people there, they are independent. That is one.

“Those who suffered casualty during the gunshots need to answer some questions too. Even though we want to help, we still must extract information that will help the government to prepare in future and understand how and when to react because the governor, in particular, is a youth.

“As a youth himself, he (Sanwo-Olu) quickly went to Abuja with the 5/5. The government immediately put into action, dissolved the SARS and had to work through other recommended actions, the needs they demanded. Within a few days, he reported back to the public. That is responsive enough.

“But where are we getting the looting, the carnage, the burning, the invasion of police stations, stealing of arms, maiming of the innocent? It is a handshake beyond the elbow.”

Food items looted in Ekiti are poisonous – Govt raises alarm

The Ekiti State government have raised an alarm on Saturday warning members of the public not to consume the food items looted in the state.

According to the government, residents mistaken the some treated agricultural products as foods yet to be distributed as Covid-19 palliatives.

Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mr Akin Omole, said in a statement in Ado Ekiti that raising the alarm became expedient to forestall any harm that could befall anyone who consumed the items.

Also reportedly looted was the office of the Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) in Ado Ekiti.

“Information at our disposal revealed that the Federal Government’s silos, the ADP warehouse and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) stores, all in Ado- Ekiti, were attacked by hoodlums under the guise of seeking Covid-19 palliatives.

“We insist that Ekiti State currently has no Covid-19 palliative warehouse as all the palliatives had been distributed.

“Unfortunately, the items carted away were Single Super Phosphate and NPK fertilisers, which they erroneously thought was “Gaari’’, cassava grains.

“The SEMA store too has only emergency supplies for disaster response.

“Some people even made away with pre-fermented corns preserved for planting. All these items are poisonous and not fit for consumption.

“We, therefore, appeal to our people not to consume these items because they can kill,’’ Omole warned.

In a similar statement, Dr Olabode Adetoyi, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, confirmed the looting, warning that most of the items carted away contained chemically-treated seeds meant for planting.

“They are not suitable for consumption,’’ he declared.

The looters actually defied a heavy downpour in Ado-Ekiti on Friday night to storm the warehouses.

Lekki Toll Gate: Killings Of Unarmed Protesters By Military, Treason, Sacrilege, Says Victor James

Calls For Prosecution Of Soldiers

Human rights advocate, Comrade Victor James, yesterday, said the killings of harmless protesters bearing Nigerian flag in Lekki Toll Gate by Military personnel is a sacrilege and treasonable felony.

The fearless rights advocate made this known in a statement made available to journalists in Asaba, Delta State capital.

The statement read in parts: “ The killings of unarmed protesters bearing Nigerian flag by Nigerian soldiers is a sacrilege to our country and our Constitution. ,

“ It portrays Nigeria in bad light before the international community; it is treason to kill any Nigerian citizen bearing the country’s flag.

“ The military swore oath to protect Nigerians from external aggression. Now, if the Military that is supposed to protect the people are the ones killing Nigerians, then we are deep trouble as a nation.

“ The Military has breached public trust and safety Act. It is purely an act of treason to the Nigerian state because the citizens are the state in line with social contract.

“ The crime is against humanity and is capable to cause anarchy. Acts like this is why black people are abused and disrespected in the West, because if you are not loved by your country statesman, is it a stranger that would love you? It is a slippery slope, Police are very hard on black people in the west because their country of origin treat them in the most worse manner.

“20/10/2020 is marked in history. I am happy your children are my age mate, both Buhari and Osinbajo children. They know how an average Nigerian youth feel today and they should be ashamed of themselves.

“ The military officials behind this terror should face the law otherwise you might as well say we don’t have a law. Human rights law also put responsibility on States to provide effective solutions in the event of violations. Don’t forget that the presidency violated our rights to dignity when he called Nigeria youths lazy in full public glair.”
