The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) have reported the arrest of two Chinese nationals who offered a N100m bribe to the commission’s top officer.

In a report on their social media page, the Chinese men were apprehended on Monday, May 11 by the Sokoto Zonal office of the commission.

The Sokoto Zonal Office of the EFCC, has arrested two Chinese: Mr. Meng Wei Kun and Mr. Xu Koi for offering a sum of N50,000,000 as bribe to its Zonal Head, Mr. Abdullahi Lawal.

The suspects were arrested on Monday, May 11, 2020 in Sokoto.

The bribe was allegedly offered in a desperate bid to compromise ongoing investigations of a construction company, China Zhonghao Nig. Ltd, handling contracts awarded by the Zamfara State Government in the sum of N50,000,000,000.00(Fifty Billion Naira) between 2012 to 2019.

The zonal office of the Commission is investigating the construction company, in connection with the execution of contracts for the construction of township roads in Gummi, Bukkuyun, Anka and Nassarawa towns of Zamfara state and also the construction of one hundred and sixty eight (168) solar- powered boreholes in the 14 local government areas of the state.

Alarmed by the consistency and professionalism of investigation being conducted, the company reached out to Lawal with an offer of N100,000,000( One Hundred Million Naira) as bribe to “bury” the matter.

In a grand design to trap the corrupt officials, Lawal played along.

On Monday, two representatives of the company Meng Wei Kun and Xu Kuoi offered him cash totaling fifty million naira in their office along airport road, Sokoto. The cash was offered as a first installment.

The suspects were promptly arrested with the cash as an evidence.

Investigation of the construction company was informed by an intelligence on alleged conspiracy; misappropriation of public funds; embezzlement; official corruption, abuse of office, stealing and money laundering obtained against the Zamfara state government through inflated and uncompleted contracts awarded to the company.

Investigations have so far revealed that China Zounghao Ltd has received payments of over N41,000,000,000.00 (Forty One Billion Naira) from the Zamfara state government out of which about N16,000,000,000.00 (Sixteen Billion Naira) equivalent to over $53,000,000.00(Fifty Three Million US Dollars) was allegedly diverted and traced to some bureau de change operators

The suspects would soon be charged to court.

The Lagos state police has paraded 29 worshippers arrested in the state for violating the Federal Government’s directive against congregational worship.

The Christan and Islamic clerics arrested alongside their congregants at different locations in the state while holding congregational services, were paraded on Monday May 11 at the Command headquarters, Ikeja.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu said the Islamic cleric, 40-year-old Rasheed Jimoh and others were arrested in a Mosque at Olushi, Lagos Island on 9th May, 2020 at about 1:13 pm.

The Pastor identified as 61-year-old Apostle Sherperd Moses Peter, was arrested alongside 16 others at Christ Desire Sabbath Mission, Olodi, Apapa while holding congregational service.

Odumosu said;

“They were arrested while holding a congregational prayers in violation of the order issued by Government. In a related development, on the same date at about 1600hours, Policemen on enforcement duty from Tolu Division arrested a Christian Cleric, Apostle Shepherd Moses Peter ’61 years old’ and 16 others in Christ Desire Sabbath Mission, Olodi, Apapa holding congregational service”.

The Pastor who however defended himself, said he was in church to share palliatives to his members to cushion the effect of the lockdown.

The police commissioner said the offenders will be charged to court soon.

A 20-year-old girl, Miracle Kalu, who allegedly got pregnant out of wedlock, delivered and sold her baby for N130,000, has been arrested alongside her accomplices.

Kalu, from Ohafia, Abia state, said the lack of funds to take care of her health condition and fend for the baby forced her into selling her 28-day-old child.

The suspect said after she got pregnant, her lover – whose house she doesn’t know – denied been responsible for the pregnancy. .

The bubble burst when two of her accomplices, Patrick Mbama, 41, and Ogechi Ekwebele, 30, were arrested around 2a.m at Anthony, Lagos, while returning from Imo state.

Lagos state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, said the baby was crying in the vehicle and the supposed mother of the child, Ekwebele, was advised to breastfeed the baby but her hesitation raised other passengers’ suspicion.

Odumosu said: “Upon questioning, this particular childless couple claimed that a childless man and wife in Lagos had paid for the said baby.” Kalu, who spoke to journalists, said she was an orphan and a secondary school dropout.

However, a police source disclosed that Kalu is notorious for selling her children, as it was not her first time of giving birth and selling her baby. .

The first fake couple, Mbama and Ekwebele, bought the baby from Kalu for N130,000 and resold her for N150,000, to another couple, Izuchukwu Okafor, 51, and Cecilia Okafor, 40, in Lagos.

Okafor said it was the desperation to have a child of my own that pushed her into buying the baby. “Being barren for 15 years is not easy,” she added.
