The driver of the cab and the Rapid Response Squad (Lagos State Police Command) should be commended for their quick intervention to prevent another suicide, barely 10 days after Daibo Toju Davies plunged himself into the lagoon.

The police in Lagos on Thursday rescued a 28-year-old man, Princewill David, who jumped into the lagoon at Third Mainland Bridge in a suicide attempt.

The incident occurred around midnight, less than two weeks after another young man jumped into the lagoon for yet -to -be ascertained reasons.

It was gathered that David, a resident of 42, Tajudeen Balogun Street, Igando, took the dive after his lover broke up with him.

The Foreign Exchange (FOREX) dealer was said to have requested a hailing taxi service only to tell the driver to stop midway through the bridge for him to urinate.

The Nation gathered that the driver turned down his request following recent trend of passengers on suicide mission, asking drivers to stop for them to pee only to jump into the water.

It was learnt that the driver increased his speed until he sighted operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on pin down operation towards Adeniji before he slowed down.

As soon as the driver slowed down, David was said to have jumped off the car and into the lagoon where he landed on logs of wood.

It was gathered that the policemen quickly went after him, rescued and rushed him to the hospital.

David was said to have fractured his legs and sustained other body injuries as a result of the jump.

According to a source, the driver said David insisted he should pass Third Mainland Bridge after he picked him up at Igando.

“He asked the driver if they were on Third Mainland Bridge when they got there and he said yes.

“The man then said the driver should stop the car so he can pee but the driver refused and sped off.

“The driver said the man was forcing him to wait but because of reports of people jumping into the water after lying that they want to pee, he increased his speed and only slowed down when he saw RRS.

“But before the driver reached where the policemen where to complain, the man ran off the vehicle and jumped into the water.

“One of the policemen saw him approach the railings and pleaded with him not to jump but the guy went ahead. Fortunately, he landed on logs of wood and the policemen with the help of local fishermen rescued him.

“He broke his legs and sustained other injuries. He was rushed to the hospital where he is still being treated.

“They asked why he wanted to kill himself and he said it was because his girlfriend said she was no longer interested in him,” the source said.

Confirming the incident, police spokesman Bala Elkana said the victim was responding to treatment at the hospital, adding that he said heartbreak led him to attempt suicide.

Iranian Vice President, Masoumeh Ebtekar has tested positive for coronavirus as confirmed in a state news in Tehran on Thursday February 27.

Iran’s Health ministry spokesman, Kianoush Jahanpour who confirmed the development in a press conference said the tally of infections had risen to 245 with 106 more cases confirmed, the highest number for a single day since Iran announced its first infections on February 19.

Ebtekhar who advises President Hassan Rouhani on family and women’s matters has already been placed under quarantine. Before being appointed as Vice President, she was the spokeswoman for students who took 52 Americans hostage at the US embassy in Tehran in 1979.

In a bid to curb the spread of the disease, the Iranian Government has closed down educational and cultural institutions across the country and reportedly distributed hundreds of thousands of “sanitation packs” to help contain the virus, including to Qom province where local health authorities believe the virus originated.

Recall that Mojtaba Zolnour, head of Iranian parliament on national security and foreign affairs committee also contracted the virus. He appeared in a video posted by Fars news agency saying he was in self-quarantine.

The Ministry of Health in Lagos State has confirmed its first case of COVID-19 and reported it to the Federal Ministry of Health. The case, which was confirmed on the 27th of February 2020, is the first case to be reported in Nigeria since the outbreak in China in January 2020

The case is an Italian citizen who entered Nigeria on the 25th of Feburary from Milan, Italy for a brief business visit. He fell ill on the 26th February and was transfered to Lagos State Biosecurity Facilities for isolation and testing.

COVID-19 infection was confirmed by the Virology Laboratory of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, part of the Laboratory Network of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. The patient is clinically stable, with no serious symptoms, and is being managed at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos.

The Government of Lagos State under the Governor as the COVID-19 Incident Commander, through the the Lagos State Ministry of Health, has been strengthening measures to ensure that any outbreak in Lagos is controlled and contained quickly in collaboration with the multi-sectoral Coronavirus Preparedness Group, led by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

A statement by Prof Akin Abayomi, Commissioner for Health, Lagos State reads;

“We have immediately activated the State Emergency Operations Centre to respond to this case and implement firm control measures.”

I wish to assure all Lagosians and Nigerians that we have been strengthening our preparedness since the first confirmation of cases in “China. We will use all the resources made available by the State and the Federal Government to respond to this case.”

“We are working to identify all the contacts of the patient, since he arrived in Nigeria. Please, be reminded that most people who become infected may experience only a mild illness and recover easily, but it can be more severe in others, particularly the elderly and persons with other underlying chronic illnesses. All Lagosians should take care of their health and maintain hand and respiratory hygiene to protect themselves and others, including their own families, following the precautions below:”

1. Regularly and thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water, and use alcohol-based hand sanitiser.

2. Maintain at least 1 & half metres (5 feet) distance between you and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

3. People coughing persistently or sneezing should stay indoors or keep a social distance, but not mix with a crowd.

4. Ensure that you and people around you follow good respiratory hygiene by covering mouths and noses with a handkerchief or tissue while sneezing or coughing. You can also sneeze or cough into your sleeve at the bent elbow.Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

In a statement, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) says : “The Honourable Minister of Health (Osagie Ehanire) has announced a confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) case in Lagos State.

“The case, which was confirmed on the 27th of February, 2020, is the first case to be reported in Nigeria since the beginning of the outbreak in China in January 2020.

“The patient is clinically stable and is being managed at the Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba.

“We assure all Nigerians that measures are in place to respond appropriately.

“We are working with the Lagos Ministry of Health to identify contacts and initiate response accordingly.”

A Filling Station In Abuja (Shema Mega Petrol Filling Station) has been gutted by fire.

Located Along Kubwa Expressway, The Filling Station went up in flames on Wednesday, destroying a building that houses its office.

According to Eyewitnesses, The Fire Started When Fuel Spilled Across The Premises From A Tanker That Was Offloading.
Although there were no casualties, at least six petrol rigs and a tanker were destroyed by the fire.

At the time of reporting the incident, men of the Federal Fire Service were on ground to quench the fire.

A Nigerian pastor, identified as Prophet David Kingleo Elijah of the Glorious Mount of Possibility Church in Lagos, has said he’s ready to travel to China, to prophetically destroy coronavirus.

Speaking in his church recently, the clergyman said: “I am going to China to go and deal with Coronavirus. I am going prophetically to destroy coronavirus”.

Lamonte McIntyre, from Kansas, USA has been awarded $1.5 million after being wrongfully convicted for two murders he didn’t commit and spending 23 years in prison.

Lamonte was convicted and sentenced to two terms of life in prison for the murders of Donald Ewing and Doniel Quinn back in 1994 after both victims had been shot in midday while in their car. Lamonte who was 17 at the time was not physically present and no evidence or motive linked him to the crime.

According to The Associated Press, Lamonte has been fighting for his freedom for the past 8 years and in court documents he alleged that the prosecutor in the case intimidated witnesses after they told her that Lamonte did not look like the shooter once they saw him in person. In court documents, Lamonte also alleged that the prosecutor and the presiding judge also had a romantic relationship that wasn’t known as at the time of conviction.

His legal team also alleged that that the ‘White’ detective who investigated the murders usually harassed African-American women, including Lamonte’s.

After serving more than 2 decades for a crime he didn’t commit, Lamonte was finally discharged from prison in 2017, and in 2019 filed a lawsuit against the state of Kansas to be compensated for wrongful conviction.

Lamonte McIntyre was awarded the sum of $1.5 million this week by the Kansas state government.

“We are committed to faithfully administering the state’s mistaken-conviction law as the legislature wrote it,” “We were ultimately able to resolve all issues, satisfy all of the statute’s requirements, and agree to this outcome so Mr. McIntyre can receive the benefits to which he is entitled by law because of his mistaken conviction.”” Attorney General of Kansas, Derek Schmidt said in statement after the money was disbursed.

An 18-year-old lady, Idowu Abosede, has been arrested by men of the Ogun state police command for stabbing her boyfriend, Aliyu Ibrahim, to death over N3,000.

A statement released by the state Police command spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the lovers were involved in an argument when the unfortunate incident happened. Abosede was arrested following a distress call from the Seriki Hausa in Sagamu area of the state.

The Divisional Police Officer in Sagamu, SP Okiki Agunbiade, was said to have detailed his detectives to the scene of the crime, where a blood-stained knife was recovered.

“On interrogation, the suspect claimed that she came to pass the night with the deceased and when it was morning, she took the sum of N3,000 from the deceased which he was not ready to part with. This led to an argument between them.

She further stated that it was the deceased who brought out the knife and in the cause of dragging it with him, the knife stabbed him on his chest.” Oyeyemi said in his statement.

The police spokesperson said the body of the deceased has been handed over to his relations on demand for burial according to Islamic injunctions.

A 100 Level Cross River University of Technology, CRUTECH student identified as Barnabas Otu, drowned in a swimming pool in Calabar hours after matriculation.

It was gathered that the student who just gained admission into the Department of Urban and Regional planning, faculty of Environmental Sciences did his Matriculation on Monday, February 24, 2020.

According to reports, the incident occurred at Orange Resort, Akai Efa in Calabar Municipality local government area, where the students had gone to celebrate their successful matriculation.

The Public Relations Officer of CRUTECH, Mr. Onen Onen confirmed the incident.

“The information is true, but I don’t have many details now because I travelled, when I come back, I am going to compile a report on that”, he said.
