Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reacted to a viral video of him saying he will regulate the activities of commercial motorcyclists popularly known as Okada riders in Lagos state while speaking at The Platform in October 2019. (Read Here)

In the viral video which was dug up by Nigerians, the Lagos State Governor was heard saying;

“I need to also mention, to solve the traffic issue of Lagos is also to talk about the Okada issue.

“Okada is everywhere, anywhere you see, so part of the things we are going to be doing is not leave anybody behind. People are currently using a system that is working for them, meaning that you see some Okada riders that are branded, that are using smart pays to pay when you finish your journey.

“We are trying to harmonise all of them and be able to come up with a regulation system where we can account for every Okada rider. We will know who they are, we can manage them and when anything happens…

“In fact, the solution that some of them are bringing, they can actually disable some of those Okadas remotely, that’s where we are planning to get to. But it’s also something we have to think very well and be sure that nobody is disenfranchised, as much as possible give everybody opportunity to play and to play well.

“I’m hoping we all these, the solution around our traffic would be reduced significantly.”

However reacting to the viral video, Governor Sanwo-Olu through his chief press secretary, Gboyega Akosile denied saying he won’t ban Okada riders.

The governor’s spokesperson told Premium Times that the Sanwo-Olu administration only decided to enforce the existing laws in the state.

He said;

“When the governor was talking on The Platform, he didn’t make any categorical statement about whether there would be a ban or not.

“He said that ‘we will look into it. We will see whether we will use technology or even categorise them…’ Everything he said was not categorical. It wasn’t only at The Platform he said that; he said it at several events.

“What we have only done is to start up enforcement on the existing laws, we have not come out to say we are banning. You cannot ban people’s commercial activities, the government has the responsibility, due to one reason or the other, to regulate.

“Go to the UK, Uber is a major transportation company, U.K government banned them due to regulation issues, so if Okada people had constituted a menace to the society, security.

“You and I are not safe and our research has shown that 85 per cent motorcycles. The government went to the drawing board to know what can be done. If we do that it won’t be easy for any criminally minded people carrying put dastardly acts to escape.

“If you see the number of at the hospitals you will be shocked and all of this is Okada. We had to create an Okada ward. ”

You see some okada riders that are branded, that use smart ways to pay when you finish the journey. We are trying to harmonise all of them and be able to come up with a regulation system where we can account for every okada rider.

Lagos State Govt Hails Compliance With Restriction Of Motorcycles And Tricycles

The Lagos state government says the high level of compliance to its ban on motorcycles aka Okada and tricycles popularly known as keke Napeps, shows that residents of the state are in agreement with the ban which took effect on Saturday February 1st.

In a statement released on its Facebook page, the state government said the little discomfort experienced by commuters on some routes due to the absence of motorcycles and tricycles is noted and that alternatives would soon be rolled out.

Read the statement below;

The government of Lagos State praises motorcycle and tricycle operators for complying with the restriction from six local government areas, major highways and bridges. The enforcement of the State Security Council’s order began on Saturday, February 1, 2020.

The level of compliance was over 90 %. In fact, some of the ride hailing companies directed their riders to obey the directive. This is commendable.

The high level of compliance has shown that Lagosians agree with the government on the need to stop the danger that commercial motorcycles and tricycles have become – a big threat to safety of lives and security of our people. They should stand firm in supporting the government.

The little discomfort experienced by commuters on some routes due to the absence of motorcycles and tricycles is noted. This will not last as alternatives are being rolled out.

A fleet of 65 buses will join the others on some major routes as from Monday , February 3, 2020: No less than 550 more buses are being expected. Besides, 14 ferries will be commissioned on Tuesday. This will further open up the waterways, reduce travel time on various routes and provide safe, dependable and comfortable alternatives for commuters.

The government is not unaware that enforcing this directive may lead to some job losses. The Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, plans to announce some measures to tackle the likely effects of the order, besides the programmes of various agencies, such as the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Office of Civic Engagement, Lagos State Parks and Gardens and others.

The government hereby warns all those who are planning to unleash violence on the state because of the ongoing enforcement to have a change of heart. Lagosians are peace loving and law abiding people, who will not embrace any disruption of their legal activities by failed politicians hiding under the evil of unwholesome activism. The law enforcement agents have been directed to ensure that nobody takes the law into his hands. The government places a very high premium on law and order in the interest of all Lagosians. It will not fail to act when peace is threatened.
