American rapper Nicki Minaj’s brother has been jailed for 25 years to life after being found guilty of child rape.
Jelani Maraj was sentenced in a New York court today by Judge Robert McDonald, years after the guilty verdict was reached, reports TMZ.
Maraj was found guilty of predatory sexual assault against a child and endangering the welfare of a child in a trial that lasted less than three weeks.
Back in 2017, the rapper, whose real name is Onika Maraj-Petty, visited her brother while he was locked up.
Nicki didn’t testify during the trial despite claims made by her brother’s defence team that she would.
Maraj was actually found guilty in November 2017. Jelani Maraj’s attorney David M. Schwartz said,
“We will be appealing this excessive sentence. There was clear juror misconduct amongst other issues.”
Jelani Maraj was first charged in the case back in April 2016. He was accused of repeatedly raping his stepdaughter, beginning when she was 11 years old. Schwartz had claimed at various points that the girl’s allegations against Maraj were part of her mother’s $25 million extortion scheme.
In October 2019, a Nassau County judge denied Maraj and Schwartz’s bid to have the verdict overturned.
It has been revealed that Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gigi prayed together during mass at their catholic church, hours before they both died in the tragic helicopter crash on Sunday.
The NBA legend and 13-year-old Gigi reportedly attended a 7am mass and received Communion at the Our Lady Queen of Angels in Newport Beach. The service was held by Father Anthony Vu, a Vietnamese parochial vicar at the church.
After the church service, the father and daughter along with seven others boarded the S-76 Sikorsky helicopter heading to the Mamba Academy in Thousand Oaks for Gigi’s basketball practice. But the helicopter crashed into a hillside near Calabasas around 9.30am.
A spokesman for Our Lady Queen of Angels confirmed to DailyMail.com that Kobe and his daughter attended early morning service on Sunday.
One parishioner, who attended a later mass at the church, wrote on social media: ‘During mass, our priest informed us all that Kobe Bryant and his daughter attended mass this morning at the Our Lady Queen of Angels.’
Father David Barnes, a Catholic priest in Boston, Massachusetts later confirmed Kobe’s attendance.
He tweeted on Sunday: ‘A friend texted me today to tell me that a friend of her’s (sic) saw #KobeBryant at #Catholic Mass this morning. ‘Mass is the worship of God. Heaven is the worship of God. Go to Mass here so that you can worship God forever in heaven.’
In a moving Facebook post, Bishop Timothy Freyer, of the Orange Diocese, said Kobe was a ‘committed Catholic’ who ‘loved his faith’.
He said: ‘Our hearts remain heavy after the tragic loss suffered in the wake of yesterday’s helicopter crash in Calabasas.
‘We pray and mourn for the friends and family of the victims who have been publicly identified in news reports: Basketball icon Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna.
‘Orange Coast College baseball coach John Altobelli and his wife, Keri, and daughter, Alyssa. Basketball coach Christina Mauser and pilot Ara Zobayan.
‘Kobe was a basketball icon who inspired us through his words and actions to set our goals, work hard and achieve our dreams. He was a committed Catholic who loved his family and loved his faith.
‘A longtime Orange County resident and parishioner in our Diocese, Kobe would frequently attend Mass and sit in the back of the church so that his presence would not distract people from focusing on Christ’s Presence.
Please join me in praying for the victims. May God grant their loved ones peace and bring them comfort during these difficult times.’
And Los Angeles Archbishop Jose H Gomez said of Kobe on Twitter: ‘So very sad to hear the news of #KobeBryant’s tragic death this morning.
‘I am praying for him and his family. May he rest in peace and may our Blessed Mother Mary bring comfort to his loved ones. #KobeBryantRIP.’
‘There can be nothing more consoling to those who mourn than to know that a loved one worshipped God just before his death because worshiping God is what heaven is.’
Julie Hermes, a spokeswoman for Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church said the late basketball legend sat at the back of the service and left early to avoid disturbing the other parishioners.
He attended the 7am mass prior to going to the Orange County John Wayne Airport,’ Hermes told DailyMail.com.
‘I imagine he went straight to the airport, because the mass was 7-8am. I’m told generally 7am was his mass.
‘He was very discreet. He would come in and stay at the back, and his family too, and then he would usually leave a little earlier prior to the very end of the service.
‘He was very much loved at the church, and he was very devout, very dedicated to his faith.’
‘I went to the 12pm mass, that was dedicated to him. Every mass since has been dedicated to Kobe and the families of all the victims,’ the church staffer said.
‘Everybody was stunned. It was like silence. Everybody was in shock. It was very still. When the 12pm mass ended, because that was the first mass after anybody knew, everybody walked out in silence and were glued to their cell phones looking up any information they could get online.
‘Our parishioners knew him not just from church but from the community, because Kobe was a great part of this community. That’s how I know him too. I live very close to him in Newport Coast. He was a like regular guy, you wouldn’t know he was a celebrity. He would go out on his own without bodyguards.
‘In the Starbucks line and Sees Candy line, if the kids wanted to take a picture of him he always took a picture. Even if you didn’t talk to him, it made people happy to know he was part of the community.’
Hermes said the Queen of Angels Church also held a rosary service at 7.45am on Monday, attended by Kobe fans studying at the nearby University of Irvine.

Nigerians on social media, including celebrities have since reacted to the judgement, calling it tragic for both parties as two lives would be lost in what could have been very preventable.
Reports on social media also suggest that Maryam and her late husband were once a very happy couple and no one would have believed they had marital crisis.
Well, Yabaleftonline has retrieved a video via a Youtube channel, which corroborates the aforementioned sentence.
Here’s a throwback video of Maryam Sanda and her late husband, during their wedding reception.

The media personality who advocated for people to walk away from their marriages when it’s no longer working, insisted that “nobody is worth throwing the rest of your life in jail or even worse a death sentence for”.
Toke Makinwa noted that though most people say that divorce is not an option, a sin and not in our tradition, they will however only cry when one “throws his or her life away”.
She tweeted;
I know some conversations are tough but they must be had, nobody is worth throwing the rest of your life in jail or even worse, a death sentence, anger is evil, choose your mental health and walk away always. It’s hard, it’s tough but one minute of anger can take away everything
They say divorce is not an option and it’s a sin, and it’s not our tradition but if you die or kill someone cos of anger, the same people that “said”will only cry with you as you throw your life away, try separation first and if things don’t get better, choose you
Life is tough, people are angry, there is frustration in the land. The only sanity you can guarantee is yours. If someone is threatening your peace pls separate from them, at least you can both be alive to raise your kids, and maybe one day find a resolve, stop testing yourself

Popular Ghanaian gospel singer, Empress Gifty Adorye has advised married women to desist from taking their marital issues to pastors for solution because most pastors also have problems in their marriages and are not happy.
The Award-winning singer, who went through a divorce, sat for an interview with Kofi TV.
During the interview, she revealed that her divorce taught her many valuable lessons, one of which is to never take marital issues to any man of God.
In her words ;
“I tell you, even they, their marriages are on fire, so they use your problems to console themselves. Most of them have problems, most of them have divorced their wives secretly that many people don’t know. A lot of them have problems but because of the fame they have it’s so hard for them to come public. Most of them have problems, what they put out in church with their wives are all an act, pretense, they pretend a lot.”
Empress Gifty said women who are going through problems in their marriage, should take time to do a bit of introspection, because this can help them identify what they themselves did to negatively affect their marriage.
She went on to ask women to talk to God and their mothers if they have marital issues, rather than go to pastors.

The Lagos State Government has banned the activities of motorcycle riders popularly known as Okada riders and tricycle riders in six Local Government Areas (LGAs), nine Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and 10 major highways across the State. Also banned are ride hailing services, OPay and GOkada.
According to the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, operations of Okada and Keke NAPEP have been banned in the following LGAs and LCDAs: Apapa LGA, Apapa Iganmu LCDA, Lagos Mainland LGA, Yaba LCDA, Surulere LGA, Itire-Ikate LCDA, and Coker-Aguda LCDA.
Others are Ikeja LGA, Onigbongbo, LCDA, Ojodu LCDA, Eti-Osa LGA, Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA, and Iru-Victoria Island LCDA, Lagos Island LGA and Lagos Island East LCDA.
“The figures are scary. From 2016 to 2019, there were over 10,000 accidents recorded at the General Hospitals alone. This number excludes unreported cases and those recorded by other hospitals. The total number of deaths from reported cases is over 600 as at date.
“The rate of crimes aided by Motorcycles (Okada) and Tricycles (Keke) keeps rising. Motorcycles (Okada) and Tricycles (Keke) are also used as getaway means by criminals.
“Therefore, after consultations with stakeholders, the State Security Council, in compliance with the extant Transport Sector Reform Law 2018, has decided to commence enforcement of the law which bans the operation of Motorcycles (Okada) and Tricycles (Keke) in the following Local Governments (LGs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs): Apapa LG and Apapa Iganmu LCDA; Lagos Mainland LG and Yaba LCDA; Surulere LG, Itire-Ikate and Coker-Aguda LCDAs; Ikeja LG, Onigbongbo and Ojodu LCDAs; Eti-Osa LG, Ikoyi-Obalende and Iru/Victoria Island LCDAs; Lagos Island LG and Lagos Island East LCDA,” he said.
The Okada and Keke NAPEP are restricted on the following highways and bridges:
Omotoso said the measures were taken by the Government in response to “scary figures” of fatal accidents recorded from operations of Okada and tricycles in the State between 2016 and 2019. Omotoso said the lack of regard for the Lagos Traffic Laws by the Okada and tricycle riders had resulted in preventable loss of lives, adding that their impermissible movements on restricted highways had also contributed to traffic jams.

Below is a video of Maryam Sanda breaking down in tears after a Federal High Court in Abuja today January 27th, sentenced her to death by hanging for stabbing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, to death during an argument in their home in Abuja in November 2017.
A judicial drama that lasted almost three years reached a milestone Monday when Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court found Maryam Sanda guilty of killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello.
Ms Sanda stabbed her husband with a kitchen knife with clear intent to kill, Mr Halilu said in the judgment on a two-count homicide charge brought by the Nigerian police against Ms Sanda in November 2017.
The prosecution asked for the death penalty. The judge obliged by sentencing the convict to death by hanging.
WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW;
He said although the prosecution did not prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt, as there was no other witness of the incident aside the accused and no autopsy or murder weapon tendered, the surrounding circumstances were compelling.
Justice Halilu said he reached his verdict by relying on the compelling circumstantial evidence and testimonies of the six witnesses called by the police, the relatives of the convict who cleaned up the scene of the murder; a post-mortem examination on the deceased’s corpse; and the contradictory statements of the convict.
The judge said he also relied on the “Doctrine of the Last Scene”, which stipulates that the last person at a crime scene bears full responsibility.
“It serves to buttress the finding that the defendant was the last to be seen with the deceased and therefore has full responsibility of what caused his death”, Mr Halilu who was appointed a judge at the FCT High Court in 2010 noted.
After the judge found her guilty and was about to deliver sentence, Ms Sanda forced her way out of the dock and burst into tears, screaming “Who will take care of my daughter?”
She was headed for the balcony before she was restrained by security officials.
Her relatives, in turn, started shouting, causing an uproar.
In the midst of the commotion, the judge called a short break to restore calm before the sentence was delivered.
The Trial
Monday’s judgment lasted almost three hours as the judge traced the origin of the trial, the evidence of all the witnesses, as well as the surrounding circumstances that preceded the death of the deceased.
Six prosecution witnesses appeared during the trial, including the deceased’s friends who were with him moments before his death, the laundryman and police officers.
On the other hand, the defence counsel called three witnesses, including the accused and her mother.
In his testimony at the beginning of the trial, Ibrahim Mohammed, a friend of the deceased’s and a key witness, said he was at the Maitama residence of the couple on the night of November 18, 2017, for over eight hours before tragedy struck.
He recalled how an argument had degenerated into fisticuffs. The victim, Bilyaminu, was the son of a former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Haliru Bello.
Mr Mohammed said Ms Sanda issued many threats to her husband, including to chop off his genitals if he declined to grant her divorce.
The witness said the defendant made several attempts to stab the deceased with weapons such as broken bottles and a kitchen knife. Those attempts were repelled initially, he said.
Ms Sanda admitted to having a fight with her husband on the ill-fated night but denied stabbing or using any weapon on him, even though she made such threats.
The convict said her husband died from a wound on the chest by a broken Shisha pot (also known as the ḡalyān, it is a single or multi-stemmed device that is used to either smoke or vaporise flavoured tobacco).
“He pushed me and as I was falling down, I mistakenly broke his Shisha bottle and the water inside spilled on the floor,” she narrated to the court.
The accused said the deceased fell against the broken Shisha pot in an attempt to hold her down. “I saw a broken bottle pricked into his chest which I removed and covered the chest with a scarf.”
The young woman said she rushed her husband to Maitama General Hospital where he was confirmed dead.
Smokescreen – Shishapot Plot
Justice Halilu in his final judgment discredited the Shisha pot story, describing it as a “smokescreen hatched to mislead the court and cover the truth”.
The judge said the compelling versions of multiple prosecuting witnesses (PW) has proven that the Shisha pot was broken after the death of Bilyaminu.
He said Pw1 and Pw4 admitted that they saw the shisha pot in question unbroken in the morning of the incident before the arrival of the police.
The judge said this piece of evidence remained “unshaken” as the mother of the accused who was also present that morning never denied that the witnesses were in the house before they all left for the station.
“Your almighty Shisha bottle has been discredited by compelling circumstantial evidence,” the judge said.
Justice Halilu also said Ms Sanda’s police statement was inconsistent with her court testimony. “In her statement before the court, the defendant failed to mention that he threatened to harm the deceased multiple times with a kitchen knife on the night of the incident.”
Maimuna Aliyu, Ms Sanda’s mother; Aliyu Sanda, her brother, and Sadiya Aminu, her housemaid were initially charged for allegedly tampering with evidence by cleaning the blood and other proofs from the crime scene.
Hamza Abdullahi, the laundry man who helped in conveying the deceased to the Maitama hospital where he was pronounced dead, said, “…when we got back home, we discovered that the bloodstain we left had already been cleaned…”
Another witness, Simon Okon, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) said, “…in the company of the relatives, we visited the incident scene where I saw some broken bottles on the floor but there was no bloodstain. I went to the bedroom still there was no bloodstain…”
Justice Halilu said Sanda’s relatives diverted to the house to clean up the crime scene before heading to the station, according to the laundry man’s version.
The sentence
Ms Sanda’s was shaking violently as the judge was reading her sentence. Mr Halilu said surrounding circumstances proved that the defendant fatally injured the deceased by stabbing him in the heart and other body parts with a kitchen knife with intent “to kill”.
He said the attack was premeditated. Mr Halilu said though the accused is a mother of two, his sentiment will not go far to free her from the long arms of the law.
“You, Maryam Sanda is found guilty of the murder of Bilyaminu Bello and are hereby sentenced to death by hanging.”
Ms Sanda covered her face with a black veil as prison wardens dragged her out of the courtroom after the judge rose.
