Lagos, Nigeria (CNN) Seated in a stylish living room of a home in a suburb of Nigeria’s commercial center, Lagos, Basil Okpara Jr. is tapping away on his laptop keyboard.
The 9-year-old is building a hide and seek game, using a free programming application called Scratch 2.
Scratch 2 allows users to create games, animations, and stories online or offline. So far, Basil has used it to generate more than 30 mobile games.
Today’s game involves a bat he has programmed to hide. The player gets a point every time he catches the bat when it emerges from its hiding place.
“I learned how to build games at a boot camp. Now, I build to keep me busy when I am bored,” Basil told CNN.
In March, his father signed him up for a five-day boot camp for children aged 5 to 15.
The camp, organized by Codefest International, was put in place to give children like Basil access to emerging technologies like robotics and virtual reality.
Growing up, Basil used to play a lot of mobile games says his father, Basil Okpara Sr.
“I bought him a tablet when he was 4 years old because I saw that he was always grabbing phones to play games with. He played Candy Crush and Temple Run a lot,” the father told CNN.
But Basil’s interest in creating his games grew at age 7 after he got scolded for spending all of his time playing.
“There was this day he was on the tablet, as usual, he was so carried away with the game he was playing that I got upset with him,” his father said.
“Out of annoyance, I said to him, ‘you are always playing games, can’t you think about building your own games so others can play yours too?’. I was angry when I said it, and I did not know he took it seriously,” he added.
Since then, Basil actively showed interest in learning how to make his own games, prompting his parents to buy him a laptop and register him to learn the first steps of building games.
Basil, who wants to be a scientist in the future, titles his games based on what they are about.
The games are still in their raw form and can currently only be accessed on computers that have Scratch 2 installed.
But according to his father one of them, titled Frog attack, will be available to the public on Google play store in August.
Africa has the largest youth population in the world, and like Basil, this population is taking the lead when it comes to innovation on the continent.
Two Nigerian 12-year-olds were recently celebrated for using codes to build robots to sort out their house chores.
In May, team Acrobot, a Ghanaian all-girls high school team won the 2019 Robofest competition by programming robots to stack boxes.
And with Africa experiencing increased investment from tech giants like Google and Microsoft, Basil and his peers are on their way to becoming future coding stars.
The Whatsapp status of Salamat, a 200 level student of the department of Chemistry Education who was killed alongside four others when a pedestrian bridge at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Gubi Campus, collapsed on Monday night August 5th during a heavy downpour, suggests that she had a premonition about her death.
A screengrab of the Whatsapp status shared online by her friends, Salamat made reference to going to heaven and sleeping peacefully. Salamat and some of her colleagues were reading in a classroom at about 10pm when they decided to hurry back to the hostel as the weather became windy.
Just before going to use the pedestrian bridge that caused her to drown, Salamat updated her Whatsapp status. In her words
My degree will not go up with me to heaven. Therefore, I will not come and kill myself over school. If I don’t know it by 11.30pm, I am resting my head peacefully on my pillow and going to sleep” she wrote
Busola Dakolo, celebrity photographer, says she was forced by police at gun-point to sign a document countering her rape allegations against Biodun Fatoyinbo, senior pastor of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA) church.
Busola, wife of Timi Dakolo, Nigerian singer, had alleged that the pastor had sexual relations with her when she was 16 going on 17 in Ilorin.
In an interview with UK Guardian , she narrated how she was forced into a van by some armed men who mandated her to speak with their superior officer in Pidgin language.
She also recounted how she was handed a document containing allegations of “criminal conspiracy, falsehood, mischief and threat to life” to sign.
According to her, the contents of the letter were not levelled against Fatoyinbo but against she and her husband.
“One was holding a gun and the second, a letter. They told me they were from IG’s (inspector general of police) office in Abuja and that I needed to sign this letter and acknowledge it,” Dakolo said.
The incident, she said, occurred after a tinted mini bus followed her while she was driving into her home in Lagos.
On July 23, Dakolo and her husband were invited by the special tactical squad of the inspector general of police (IGP) for questioning over allegations of “falsehood and criminal conspiracy,” albeit, without extending the gesture to Fatoyinbo.
“Our culture doesn’t allow speaking of these sorts of things against anointed men of God. They’d rather hide it, and the party that is being victimized tends to live with that self-blame,” she said.
“The damage on the survivor is extremely terrible but the society, the church, keeps sweeping things under the carpet.”
Meanwhile, Fatoyinbo returned to the pulpit on August 4 — a month after stepping aside for the issue to be investigated.

She was a girl from Barbados, she was a very special girl and we were together for one and a half years but I actually lost her. There was something she wanted me to do but I could not at that point in my life because I was a little bit too crazy, hung up on fame and indecisive about life.
“She decided to make a decision for both of us by insisting I put a ring on her fingers. She wanted me to make that move or move on so that I didn’t block the space for another man because I wasn’t ready. She moved on because she was that strong even though she suffered the consequence of not being with me for a while.

So a Twitter user had the dream of travelling to Dubai next year and made sure to proclaim it on her Twitter page. Talk about miracles! @endiepeach was certainly stunned when she realized that Nigerian singer, Patoranking saw her tweet and promised her an all expense paid trip to her desire destination.
@endiepeach took to her Twitter page two days ago to write,
“I’ll travel to Dubai next year. Speaking it into existence.”
She definitely didn’t have the thought of dream coming true in less than 48 hours… but it did! And now she doesn’t have to wait until next year before she can make her way into the UAE.
Singer, Patoranking replied today and told her she could travel anytime she wants so long as she has a valid passport, and it will be all on him.
He wrote,
“You don’t have to wait till next year…if you have a valid passport let me know you can travel anytime…all expenses paid.”
Officials of the Lagos state police command have arrested two Chinese nationals, Lin Piehao, 22, and Li Ruoneng, 27, for allegedly operating an illegal e-waste factory in the Ikeja area of the state.
E-waste contributes to environmental degradation with negative effects on human health such as inflammation and oxidative stress-precursors to cardiovascular disease, DNA damage and possibly cancer.
Spokesperson of the state police command, Bala Elkana, who confirmed their arrest, stated that the Chinese nationals whose visas to Nigeria have since expired, were arrested on Monday night, August 5th at their illegal factory located at 19, Sule Abuka Street, Opebi in Ikeja by a team led by the Commander Area F, Akinsoji Adebayo, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).
One of the police officers who participated in the arrest of the Chinese nationals, said
“We got a tip-off about their activities and we stormed there and arrested them. We also discovered that the two brains behind the company are staying in Nigeria illegally. They came to Lagos in May and they were issued a month visa but they exceeded their stay and are working in Nigeria illegally.
“We will investigate to know the sources of the gadgets they pieces here. Also, we will investigate how they came about such a harmful business in this area. What they are doing here could cause serious health issues for other residents,” said a police source.
When interrogated, one of the arrested Chinese nationals, Piehao, said they usually bought panels from technicians and scrap sellers.
“We buy phone panels (Android and Nokia panels). We buy them from phone repairers and scrap sellers. We remove the panel I.C. with machine and then ship it to China and Vietnam. We have some Nigerian casual workers in our factory but we give them the rules and urge them to be discrete before they join us. We actually came into Nigeria with one month visa to explore the country and study to know the business we can do, but our boss in China urged us to open the factory and we have been enjoying Nigeria and did not want to go back despite the expiration of our visa.
“I do not have work permit. I know it is a crime to work without work permit, but the e-waste business is very lucrative. We do a lot to ensure that the smoke from the e-waste does not affect the environment where we operate,” he said
Nigerian singer, Tekno is reported to be at the Lagos state police command where he is being questioned by the state police CID for dancing with half-naked ladies in a see-through truck in the Lekki area of the state.
His visit to the police station comes after videos of the singer dancing in a truck with scantily clad girls caused a stir after they surfaced online.
The state police command spokesperson, Bala Elkana, spoke to LIB earlier today and said Tekno arrived their office for questioning this morning.
“Tekno has been invited by the State CID in respect of those strip dancers in the truck in a public place dancing naked. So he is invited for questioning. He is in our office at the moment” He said
When asked if he will be charged to court, Bala said he does not know for now as the command is still investigating the matter.
The act of displaying nudity in public spaces contravenes Section 136 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which provides that any person who commits any act of gross indecency with another person in public commits an offence and liable to a conviction to three years imprisonment.
A man identified as Adewale, pulled a wild act before his two kids as he stormed his ex-wife’s house to take back a car he bought her on her birthday.
The incident reportedly occurred in Ifako Ijaiye area of Lagos State and it was learnt that Victoria, Adewale’s ex-wife’s defence of using the car to feed their kids fell on deaf ears as he was bent on repossessing the car.
Victoria was assaulted by Adewale when she was refused handing over the car key and he was heard repeatedly saying that her “men should buy her a car”.
Sharing videos from the scene of the incident @its_gracey12 wrote;
How heartless can a man get? I mean how could love get so sour that you hate your wife so much and the kids you both had together.
So i just got in from work to meet this chaos in the compound…apparently my neighbour’s husband whom she has been separated from since last year came to get the car he had bought for her while they were still married because he found out she is using the car for uber/taxify cab business and using that to survive paying the kids fees, house rent etc.
He is so pained that she hasn’t come to beg him like she normally does and he has been wondering why. Immediately he got to know that it is the car that has been her source of income, he came along with a friend to get it. This isn’t the first time i have witnessed their fights as the last time he came around, he wanted to forcefully take the children and when the wife resisted, he told her never to call him for anything regarding them.
This woman is very hardworking that she takes her kids to school very early in the morning and go for her daily job and returns in the evening with her kids. I never even knew she is into a cab hailing business, till she explained everything and that the kids are usually in afterschool till 7:30 when she picks them.
The Nigerian sysyem really needs a law that protects the women after a separation or divorce so they don’t lose totally. Imagine the man told her she has no right on the car as it was bought in his name i am really happy i captured this and it is even evident that the so called husband is a violent man. According to the woman, she has endured a lot from him until he had a child with another woman. This is pure wickedness and so unfair

The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has denied media reports that a final year student of the Department of English, Grace Opeyemi Dara, committed suicide because of her poor grades.
Grace reportedly drank Sniper and died on August 2nd.
The spokesman of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, in a statement released on Monday August 5th, said Dara’s academic record was not bad to warrant her committing suicide.
According to Olanrewaju, “Dara was residing off-campus and that she first took the sniper on April 22. The security unit of the institution laterwent to her house, took her to the university health centre where she was referred to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex for better treatment.
“She was treated and discharged home to her parents. She was brought back to the hospital by her parents and readmitted at the Intensive Care Unit of the OAUTHC last Thursday, 1st of August and she unfortunately died the next day.
Miss Dara is on a Cummulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.68 which qualified her, at least, to be an average student on a 2 – 2 class of grade. It is, therefore, our firm belief that a student who was on Second Class (Lower Division) cannot be said to be poor academically, talk less of committing suicide because of such,” he said.

A family in the Ikorodu area of Lagos state has been thrown into mourning after one of their sons, Yusuf Isiaka, was stabbed to death by his friend, Segun Banji, over a ram betting at the Oke Oko in Isawo, Ikorodu on Sunday August 4th.
According to reports, Banji, who resides at Number 15, Araromi Street, Oke Oko had a N500 bet with Isiaka on ram fighting. Both men bought rams ahead of the Muslim festival this Sunday August 11th. They agreed that they would allow their rams engage in a fight and anyone of the rams that loses in the fight, the owner will pay N500 to the other party.
The rams then engaged in a serious fight.
Trouble however started when one of them failed to give the N500 as earlier agreed. An argument ensued between them which led to a fight. Banji was said to have allegedly broken a bottle during the fight and stabbed Isiaka on the left chest. Realizing that he had committed a crime, Banji allegedly fled the scene but was fished out from his hiding place by officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps Safety Corps (LNSC) with the help of Owutu community members.
According to reports, while the suspect was being moved to the agency’s office at Bolade, Oshodi, for onward handover to the police, a military officer in Ikorodu stopped the team and asked them to stay back for the police to come and take him.
“We took the suspect in our patrol vehicle, but the military base in the area said we should wait at their checkpoint till the police arrive. On arrival of the Owutu anti-robbery squad, the captain directed that we should handover the suspect to the police and we all moved down to the station. A Nigerian lawyer who married her ex after a very short courtship has told of how her marriage ended up being a nightmare that she had to escape from.
Kylie Joy Terundu said she had known her husband for only 3 months before they decided to get married. But while in the marriage, she realized it was different from her expectations and she had to make a life-changing decision.
She eventually decided to leave the marriage even though the union had already produced daughters.
She said she never believed she would end up a single mother but she’s glad she made the decision to divorce her husband and start all over.
The writer wrote on Instagram”
Isn’t it crazy yet wonderful how unscripted life can be?
I mean look at me, if anyone had told me that I would one day be a single mother, I wouldn’t have believed them.
I always thought that I would grow old with the one man that I marry; it’s what I wanted, it’s what I grew up witnessing.
My parents have been together for 31 years. Though imperfect, I watched my father treat my mother with so much love and respect.
They liked eachother’s company and I never witnessed dad being cruel to mum.
He was always supporting her even when we all knew that she has messed up.
It was so beautiful to watch (it still is) and I wanted the same for myself.
But, when I got married to the man I met only three Months after “knowing” him (long distance), this dream of mine was not to hold.
I tried to make it work, we both did but in the end, I was so miserable (we both were). We were incompatible to say the least and when two persons who have completely different views about life, beliefs and dreams come to live together, the result is chaos.
I wasn’t going to cross over; that would have meant losing myself and everything that I believed in. He wasn’t going to cross either –
I was then faced with two options:
1. To accept that situation and spend the rest of life wondering what might have been if I had married the man who shared my dreams, ideas, hopes and beliefs.
The man who spoke tenderly to me, who saw my soul for what it is, who wanted to take long walks together, play board games, enjoy reading my works and think that I am the most incredible being ever whom he cannot imagine a life without
OR
2. Leave and avail myself for the life that I desire.
I chose the latter because forever I decided, is too long a time to stay unhappy.
It’s being great out here.
I’m at peace.
My chest doesn’t hurt anymore and I do not dread each passing day.
I’m surrounded with the love and support of family and a few good friends.
I’m able to further my life and pursue all the things I’ve always desired to do.
Being a single mother has been awesome too, I carry my status with pride, because it really is nothing to feel ashamed about, if anything, I am proud of myself for having the courage to do all that I have done.
You should see me screening toasters ?, that’s because I am not willing to settle for just any man.
I know what I want and it’s what I would have and give myself to.
As for our girls, they would continue to know that daddy loves them.
What happened between us is between us, the kids should not have to suffer for it nor witness it at all, because when parents fight, the children bleed and I would not do that to our girls.
Daddy loves them and they should have a great relationship.
I am very hopeful about the future.
I hope that he finds his happy (if it hasn’t happened yet) and I hope that we can be reasonable co-parents (because we would marry other people) who can sit down together and even take trips for the sake of our beautiful girls.
It’s a great life.
I made the best desicion I could have made.

Alibaba while serving an ‘inspirational Monday’ post recounted how far he has come.
The ace comedian said his father disowned him after he started doing stand-up comedy in 1988, because he never saw a future in what he took up as a career.
Alibaba also disclosed that he got discouraged by people who thought the ladder to success was exclusively by climbing as a Doctor, Lawyer, Engineer, Banker, Architect, Accountant and Civil Servant.
He wrote;
In 1988, when I started doing stand up comedy, there many told me that much. My father disowned me. His reason? He could not see any future in what I did.
