”I feel like a new born baby” – 56-year-old man wrongfully imprisoned for 27-years speaks

Clinton Kalu, a native of Ndinwafor in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State, last week walked out from the Port Harcourt Maximum Prison where he had spent 27 years of his life for a crime he didn’t commit.

He was roped into a murder case in April 1992 by some undisclosed persons while trying to resolve a dispute involving his in-laws. That marked the beginning of his journey in ‘hell’.

His trial at the tribunal and later at a High Court and his eventual detention happened so fast that when he found himself in prison over an offence he did not commit, he was livid with anger but later accepted his fate.

man wrongfully imprisoned

Recalling how he was sentenced to death by hanging or firing squad, Kalu in an interview with Punch said,

“Twenty-seven years ago, some people were accused of stealing generating plant and fluorescent tubes.

“They are my in-laws. After the court decided the case, we heard that somebody was murdered in the compound where my sister married. But I was arrested because the thought by those behind my ordeal was that I was trying to resolve a land dispute in favour of one person.

“I was taken to Okigwe Police Station; from there I was taken to Owerri in Imo State and from there we were charged to court in April 1992. I was detained in Owerri Prison. I was at the tribunal for seven years because those behind my ordeal added armed robbery to the case. They believed I was a strong man and wanted to destroy me.

“They brought false witnesses to testify against me at the tribunal. I was later taken to a regular court where I was condemned to death. So, from Owerri, I was transferred to Port Harcourt prison. At the Port Harcourt prisons, I waited for many years for the hangman’s noose.

“Nevertheless, I went to the Appeal Court to appeal the case but my lawyer messed up the case. Then I decided to proceed to the Supreme Court, where after 27 years in prison, I got victory. I was imprisoned for 27 years for committing no offence. On April 5 this year, I was discharged and acquitted.”

He cautioned that with the Supreme Court declaring him innocent, it would be wrong for anybody to tag him an ex-convict.

“If you describe me as an ex-convict, I won’t be happy with you. After 27 years, they found out that I committed no crime. Do you know that they would have killed me and after many years, they would have found out that I did not commit the crime? Something like that happened somewhere in Europe. In my own case, the Supreme Court found out that I was innocent and freed me. Any person that refers to me as an ex-convict, I will look at the person as a fool. I will just ask God to forgive him,” he said.

While in incarceration, Kalu lost his mother; and coupled with the fact that he was not married and had no immediate family (children), he struggled to fight loneliness even though his relatives, who also believed he was incapable of hurting anybody, let alone killing a person, visited him in prison from time to time.

Asked if he would avenge the injustice done to him, Kalu explained that he had been a changed man after gaining knowledge about the ways of Christ, adding that vengeance was not in his thoughts. He pointed out that though he felt insulted and humiliated by the court verdict, which sentenced him to death, he later realised while in prison that his tribulation was to serve a purpose.

“God has dealt with those behind my ordeal the way he wants to deal with them; I don’t have any business with them. God has already dealt with the man, who stood as a complainant in my case. On whether I will seek compensation from the police for falsely accusing me, I don’t know about that for now. I have imbibed Christ and I have nothing against those behind my ordeal. While I was in the prison, I read more. I had Diploma in Theology, I had Bachelor’s Degree in Guidance and Counselling, Master’s in Education Management, Master’s in Guidance and Counselling and I also got PhD in Guidance and Counselling.

“I am a child of God and have nothing against them. The police and others behind my ordeal knew that I did not commit the crime. One Sergeant Eze and one other person were aware that I did not commit the crime; it was a gang-up and conspiracy at the highest level.

“First of all, when I was taken to prison, I was not happy; I felt insulted and humiliated. I began to write petitions, but petitions cannot get you anywhere if you don’t have any person to follow it up,” he stated.

On what the future holds for him, Kalu, who said he was diabetic and fed himself throughout the 27 years he stayed in prison, stated that he could take to politics or continue with his guidance and counselling job, which he was doing while behind bars. To cater for himself due to his failing health, the 56-year-old said he had to sell some of his personal belongings, adding that when funds were no longer there, the church took over his feeding. He pointed out that his experience in prison had taught him that anybody could find themselves in jail due to circumstances beyond their control.

According to him, life in a Nigerian prison will not reform most inmates because of the hardship inside there. On what his being in prison for almost three decades had denied him, Kalu lamented that he may not be able to know the whereabouts of most of his properties and maintained that he would have built more houses and acquired more properties if he were not in prison.

He said he was filled with joy when on April 5, 2019, the Supreme Court pronounced him not guilty of the charge against him, insisting that the judgement had vindicated him.

“I was overwhelmed with joy on the day I was released from prison having spent 27 years there without committing a crime. Up till this moment, I feel like a newly born baby. God gave me another chance to experience His greatness again. I was happy doing that for free; nobody paid me for it. The church helped me to sponsor seminars that were organised in the prison. I read law before I went to the prison,” he said.

Amazing story of an ‘Alamajiri’ who is now an economics graduate (Photos)

A young Nigerian man who hails from the Northern part of the country, is being celebrated online after beating the odds as an Alamijiri to make out something for himself in life.

Dan Yakubu, a graduate of BSc. Economics with Second Class Honours from the University of Maiduguri, Borno State is part of the 2019 Batch A Corp members that have just come out from the NYSC Orientation Camp.

He did his camp at the Kaiama NYSC Orientation Camp, Kolokuma LGA, Bayelsa State State. Little Dan Yakubu was separated from the comfort of his family who are based in Potiskum, Yobe State and taken to Kano to fend for himself as an Almajiri.

In the course of his begging (Almajiranci), Dan Yakubu ran into a kind-hearted generous Hajiya named ‘Fatima A. Modibbo’. The altruistic Hajiya Fatima instantly took interest in the little boy. Stimulated by his brightness and smartness, she fostered him and singlehandedly sponsored his education right from primary school up to the level he found himself today.

Alamajiri

Speaking, Hajiya Fatima who broke the news credited the feat to God, and narrated how she met him.

“Allahamdullah! My almajiri has finished his university degree, with second class lower in Economics. He’s serving in Bayelsa right now. He came to my house when he was about six years old, he had such an engaging smile and melodious voice when begging, that I took to him right away. The rest I can now say is history.

“His name is Dan Yakubu. “the Dan” in his name means there’s an older Yakubu in his school. He’s from Mamudoo in Potiskum in Yobe State. I put him in school, while he continued with his informal education. He was like a sponge soaking in everything, from formal to informal, and now he’s a graduate. Allahamdullah Allahamdullah,” she said.

Interestingly, Dan Yakubu has already found and reunited with his family.

Hajiya Fatima she stated,

“Through his mallam he was able to find his family. His father now late was a truck driver, his mother died in Saudi Arabia doing menial job, but he has found his siblings.

PDP chieftain reveals strategy he used to convince his two lovers to marry him the same day

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Alhaji Kabiru Muhammadu Garkuwa, tied the ‘knots’ to his two beautiful wives the same day in Plateau state.

The politician got married to two women named Maryam Umar Muhammad and Jamila Musa Ibrahim on Saturday, April 6th in Jos, the capital city of Plateau.

Daylight Reporters had a chat with him and his two wives and they all gave answers to questions people have been asking on how the unique marriage came about..

PDP chieftain reveals strategy

Garkuwa has been separated from his first wife who had him a child for over a year now. All efforts to reconcile both of them proved abortive until he met Maryam and began another relationship.

The relationship grew and he wanted to Maryam to become his wife. But after some months, he also met Jamila and they began another courtship which also became a hearty love. Again, Garkuwa wanted to marry Jamila. That was where the technicality of how he should go about it began.

He said Jamila presented the least of the problem because he told her outright that he had a relationship going with Maryam. Jamila accepted. But how to tell Maryam he was having another affair and would also want to make her his wife became a challenge. He told Daylight Reporters that he beat about the bush for a while, until he summoned courage and hit the nail on the head.

According to him, Maryam didn’t respond favourably initially but he had to persuade her with different tricks, began spending more time with her and increased the gift items he do buy for her. Above all, he told her that if she truly loved him, his happiness should be her concern, and if marrying her (Maryam) with Jamila would make him happy, then she ought to support it. That did the trick! But what he did not tell both of them initially was that he was planning to wed them on the same day.

PDP chieftain reveals strategy

“First of all, I am a Muslim and my faith permits me to marry from one to four wives. But the injunction stipulates that if you can’t be just with all the wives, then stick to one wife, but if you can then all the women must be equally treated and equally loved. So, because I think I could, that was why I married the two ladies. They are Maryam Mohammed and Jamila Ibrahim. I love the two of them dearly and they equally love me. My first action in actualizing this is that I told both of them the truth. That is I told Maryam I was going out with Jamila and vice versa, and that I want to marry them both.

“They both consented and I even brought them to meet each other. They then, on their own, established good relationship between themselves and they started exchanging goodwill messages. Their closeness and splendid understanding/relationship between themselves further encouraged me that I can marry both of them without having any problem associated with such marriage. So, I fixed the marriage for same day. I married Maryam by 11am and married Jamila by 2pm. I did courtship with Maryam for two and a half years before the wedding, while that of Jamila was about six months.

“The unique thing which played out here was the level of the relationship between both of them after I connected and told them all that there was. They automatically became friends and bonded. That tremendously encouraged me, and we even began going out together to have lunch, dinner and catch fun generally,” he said.

Having married his both wives the same day, who was going to be the uwar gida and who would be the amarya, Daylight Reporters asked, and his response was that Maryam, of course, is the uwar gida and Jamila the amaryabecause Maryam was the first person he began relationship with before he met Jamila. Nonetheless, he said, he loved them equally. He said he told Jamila’s parents what was going on instantly but that it was tricky telling Maryam’s parents because she was the one he was first going out with.

According to him, he told Jamila’s parents early enough about it and they did not object, but that it was few days to the wedding that Maryam parents knew about. And Maryam’s parents opined that since their daughter knew about the situation and was contented with it, they too have no objection. Garkuwa said after his first marriage with his earlier wife which had issues, he waited for a while in the hope that she will realize her mistakes and come back, but she didn’t until he married Maryam and Jamila.

After his marriage to both girls now, he said, everything is realistically over between him and his earlier wife after waiting for over a year. “Even if she comes for reconciliation now, I would not consider her any longer, : Garkuwa said. He noted that she (his earlier wife), has their daughter in her custody, saying that to the best of his knowledge she is yet to remarry.

“Based on my Islamic faith, the injunction is that you must take good care of your wives, and equally too. That is what I am going to do with my two wives. They are going to get equal right, equal treatment and equal opportunity. My mother and father are both late, and all it is my uncles and other relatives that were with me on this journey, and they tremendously supported me. Even if my parents were alive, they would have supported my marriage to two women at the same time. Why because it is in order and it is not against the religion.

“Importantly also, getting married to two women at the same/on the same day time shows my strength of character and my capacity as a man. It also shows that I am a good leader and a good manager. The reason is because to be able to convince two girls to marry them at the same time and same day, as well as their parents, is not easy at all. This shows that I am a good leader and good administrator.

“So, I am very proud to be able to achieve this feat, I am very proud of myself. Besides, this is unprecedented, and that is why you see many people and media outfit coming to interview me. Anyone who successfully marries one wife is respected in the society, what about one who marries two wives at the same time? “For instance, even the way I happen to convince Maryam about Jamila was strategic. I did not directly tell her at first, and she did not initially accept when I eventually told her.

Hence, the strategy and tactics. First, I showed her my concern and love for her and let her understood that my happiness has strong connection to hers, and she should support me in anything that will make me happly. Again, you know that if you are looking for anything from a woman you have to do things that will her happy. I started giving her with more gifts, visiting her her more often and started spending more time with her so that I can have the time to convince her on my cause.

Adekunle Gold reveals why he helped Olawale, Project Fame winner turned Uber driver

Adekunle Gold reveals why he helped Olawale

Adekunle Gold in a recent interview revealed why he decided to help Olawale, the project fame winner turned Uber driver after he saw his viral video.

According to Adekunle Gold, he decided to help Olawale after he saw his video because he is all about ‘dignity in labour’ even though he was trolled on for winning Project Fame winner and ending up becoming an Uber driver. He also went further to give him a song he wrote after an experience in the United States in 2016, ensured he got a studio session and is currently shooting a video for him.

Speaking at Cool FM, Adekunle said;

So there’s this guy called Olawale, he won Project Fame and I can’t remember which year. When I saw his video that went viral talking about him doing uber and how people have abused him on how do you go from winning Project Fame to riding Uber, and he was just being honest. He was just saying I can’t steal, I don’t know how to steal, a man has to do what he has to do to fend for himself. And that touched me because that’s everything I’ve always been about. My essence is always just Work. The dignity in labour is underrated in this country. People do so much, but they don’t get celebrated. You don’t even need to celebrated for what you are doing, but at least get rewarded. So it just touched me ‘I should help this guy’.

Also confirming that Adekunle Gold gave him a song he wrote and paid for a studio session, Olawale who shared a screenshot of a message he got from Adekunle Gold wrote on Instagram;

Here is the rest of the story;

On sept 5, After the video of me on the Riding app surfaced, I got this message from my Oga. And even though he’s not been keen on sharing, my story cannot be complete without thanking him and his amazing team for being true to their word.

I was in the studio with him in less than 24hrs after that message.
He wrote the whole song. Yes! I have a song written by @ADEKUNLEGOLD. The talented and beautiful @xobutxoproduced it with a touch of @pheelzmrproducer and @seyifunmi.wav. It was finished by the masterful hands of @vtekdawesomenow passionately promoted and distributed by @mister_kareem.

My brother AG, I want to thank you for not judging me and for reaching out when alot people thought I already misused my opportunity. God bless and honour you the way you have selflessly honoured me.

Naira Marley fires back at Simi after she denied snubbing him at an event

Naira Marley has fired back at Simi, after she denied snubbing him at an event they attended during an interview she had recently with BeatFM.

Recall, that Simi had said she had no grudge against Naira Marley as they aren’t enemies neither are they, friends. She went on to say that during the said event, they didn’t even talk to each other or make eye contact.

“To be honest with you, I have zero issues with Naira Marley, I don’t have anything against him, he is not my enemy. We are not friends, we are not enemies. I saw him coming, we did not make eyes contacts, he did not talk to me, I did not talk to him. It is funny because he didn’t do anything to me, he did not directly disrespect me, he is not the first person that would say what he is saying.

I’m not a stupid person, I’m not going to antagonize you because I’m not dumb. I like to mind my business. Probably he saw something and said something else. But he never spoke to me, he didn’t approach me and I saw that and I said whatever makes you happy. And for me I’m a big picture person, I look at the big picture and if you are not in the picture, I’m not going to stress myself” she said.

However, Naira Marley then fired back at Simi after she denied snubbing, saying that there were ‘bigger’ artistes at the event who acknowledged him alongside Teni who is the ‘biggest female artiste in the industry at the moment’.

Though he admitted that they didn’t talk, however Naira Marley stated that Simi was hating and guilty all along in the interview. He also faulted her claim of not seeing him in the bigger picture.

Annie Idibia reveals why she doesn’t like to be called Tubaba’s wife

Actress and spouse of Nigerian singer, 2Baba, Annie Idibia, has revealed that she prefers to be called by her name instead of being called Tubaba’s wife.

Annie Idibia reveals

Annie revealed this in an interview where she spoke about her career and marriage. She said,

This year started for me quite tough. I spent the first three months of this year in the hospital with my father because he had been sick for a while but God has been great and I am grateful. I am actually closer to my mother than my father because she raised us single-handedly. My father is still my father and since he was sick we had to rally round him.

Growing up with only my mother really affected my life and I suffered and I do not ever want my children to face the agony of not having both parents together because it was so hard for us. Even right now, the way the world is, children are more enlightened than we were in our days, so the pressure would be harder on the kids from broken homes right now. I do not want my children to ever experience that.”

Concerning her career and how she would love to be addressed:

I took a break from my career because after I got married, I got pregnant so I had a baby and had to get used to the new life. I think I did not do any movie for about three years. Being addressed as Tubaba’s wife instead of Annie the actress has been a problem that I have been trying to work on for a long time.

“I want to believe that I have successfully been able to identify and differentiate my brand as Annie Idibia the actress/career woman and Annie Idibia the wife/mother. I prefer being addressed as Annie and not Tubaba’s wife. I hate this because I am my own person and have worked hard to build my career and brand. I should be identified and respected on that basis.”

A parrot has been arrested for alerting drug dealers that the police were coming, following a raid in northern Brazil.

The Parrot which was arrested after it alerted ‘drug dealers’ that the police were coming, was shouting “Mummy, police” as soon as security operatives arrived at a house in the Vila Irma Dulce neighbourhood of the city of Teresina. The green-feathered bird which was taken into custody where he was photographed perched inside a chicken-wire cage, before being transferred to Teresina Zoo, was owned by a drug dealer nicknamed “India” who had been arrested twice for drug trafficking in the past.

“He must have been trained for that,” said one officer involved in the operation. “As soon as police got close he began shouting.” “Lots of police officers have come by and he’s said nothing,” said local vet Alexandre Clark.

Footage of the raid’s aftermath aired by R7 showed police cataloguing small bags of crack, while the parrot sits obediently on a countertop next to a racecar helmet and a glass bottle. Husband of the drug dealer who owns the bird was identified only as Edvan, 30, and he was arrested after crack cocaine was found in the house during the raid. Nollywood movie producers pirate their own movies for quick money – Tonto Dikeh

Nollywood actress, Tonto Dikeh in her interview with Plus TV, revealed that some Nollywood movie producers pirate their own movies for quick money.

Revealing that some Nollywood movie producers pirate their own movies for quick money, Tonto Dikeh said in the interview;

“It is so deep that the truth is, it is these same producers, directors, marketers that are now the ones pirating their own movies. There was a time i overheard a conversation between producers saying instead of ‘me losing out, let me go and pirate my movies myself so i can cash out myself if i don’t make enough from the original copies’.

See, the pirates on the streets, we sell the access to them from the inside, so if we are fighting corruption, we need to fight it from the inside first. If we can stop this from inside, the ones outside too will stop. The ones doing it to themselves need to stop, you can’t be fighting what you are instigating”

Speaking further, she said “Nollywood is in a good place but it can be in a better place if it has sponsors, more commitment, more cash, more commitment, more support.”

On her sudden disappearance from the movie industry, she said “I haven’t retired, the truth is I have played every role there is. There isn’t much challenge anymore.

I have about just two or three movies that make go wow, I want to be in this. There is no action, no adrenaline rush when watching Nollywood movies, it is just the same pictures, stories, scenes, environment, we don’t have location“

She further said “Different things actually come into place on why I haven’t been on the screen today, I haven’t found the perfect script that I want to act in.

“I want to watch a movie i star in and hear my voice and not know it is my voice..we need to train ourselves and be more and i think I am one of the few people that have attained that more….”

When asked why she isn’t producing her own movies to prove that she is indeed not in the league of the modern Nollywood producers, Tonto Dikeh said “Producing is not something i love, it is not for everybody, i am more good in acting but producing is not my thing but Geneveive Nnaji has made me understand that now with Lion heart.”

A Nigerian man has taken to his social media page to narrate how he discovered the meaning of the word Iberiberism during his unpleasant experience at the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo state.

Iberiberism

According to Oladunjoye Tunde, the power outage at the airport which lasted for over three hours left many flight passengers left stranded – the airport roof was also said to be leaking despite ongoing repairs.

He shared,

For the benefit of those who do not know, today, I discovered the full meaning of Iberiberism in Owerri.
At the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport, there was power outage for over three hours. We were all sweating like Easter Fowls! At a point I have to ask Angela Nkwo-Akpolu to leave to save her from further heat. We walked past the metal detector that what was not in use due to absence of electricity. The departure hall was in darkness and people had to sit outside and some actually sat on the edge of the tarmac.
When the Air Peace flight scheduled to take off from Owerri at 5pm arrived Owerri at about 5.45pm, people who were already outside on the tarmac refused to go back to the Departure Hall in order for their tickets to be checked before boarding.
The Airport was leaking seriously, even as repair works were ongoing.
My people that’s it: Iberiberism!
