A 77-year-old retired worker and grandma who, on Tuesday, bagged her first-degree certificate at the 50th convocation ceremony of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, says she enrolled for the programme after her retirement to avoid boredom.
The retiree, Mrs. Bridget Okonji of the Department of Educational Foundations (Guidance Counselling), told journalists that the achievement was her dream come true.
“I studied guidance and counselling and I am most grateful to God Almighty who made me see this day.
“I am a retired officer. I have worked in a lot of countries around the world and also in Nigeria, where I finally retired,’’ Okonji, with Matriculation Number 111305030, said.
She added that she went for the degree programme because she did not want to sit at home after retirement.
“You know when you retire like that, you will not want to stay at home and be dying slowly, she said.
According to the retiree, no one should feel too old to go to school as learning remains a life-long adventure.
“Education has no limit. It is from cradle to death in order for one to add value to the society,’’ she said.
Bridget Okonji was among the 1,008 students of the university’s Faculty of Education, who were in the first set of 3,795 students from the Faculties of Arts, Education and Environmental Sciences conferred with the first degree on Tuesday at the ceremony.

Justice Oathman Musa of an Abuja High Court sitting in Bwari Area Council of Abuja on Tuesday Nullified the nomination of Senator Ademola Adeleke as candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the September 2018 Governorship Election in Osun State.
Adeleke, who represents Osun West Senatorial District at the National Assembly was the PDP’s candidate in the 2018 governorship election in Osun state.
Two Chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Wahab Raheem and Adam Habeeb, had in 2018 barely few days to the governorship election in Osun State had dragged Adeleke to court, accusing him of not possessing the requisite educational qualification (secondary school certificate) to contest for the office of governor.
They prayed the court for an order to disqualify Adeleke from participating in the Sept 22 governorship election in the state on the grounds that he does not possess the requisite educational qualification.
Delivering judgment in the suit Tuesday, Justice Musa annulled Adeleke’s nomination on the grounds that Adeleke offended section 177 of the 1999 constitution as amended. The section stipulated that candidates for the position of governor must be educated up to secondary school level.
According to Justice Musa, while the court’s findings showed that Adeleke entered secondary school in 1976, there was no record to show that he actually graduated as his name was no longer seen in the school’s register from 1980.
Justice Musa further stated that the result Adeleke attached to his form CF001 which he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was fake, as it was found to be different from the one presented to the court by the principal of Ede Muslim High School, Ede, Osun State.
Meanwhile, Adeleke’s lawyer Nathaniel Oke SAN has faulted the judgment of Justice Musa on the grounds that the judge erred in law by going out of hiy way to source for evidence to arrive at his “unjust conclusion”.
He submitted that the court erred particularly when it ignored WAEC evidence that Adeleke was educated up to Secondary School level as required by law.

Jose Mourinho claimed Paul Pogba wanted to ditch Manchester United’s team bus after a match to travel in his Rolls-Royce. The Portuguese boss, who cheekily referred to him as “His Excellency”, had several bust-ups with the Frenchman during their time together at Old Trafford.
Speaking at a coaching forum in Portugal, he told a tale about how Pogba disobeyed his orders after a 2-0 win over Burnley in September.
Mourinho said: “We would play a team that was 30 kilometres from Manchester and a player asked me if after the game if he could return to Manchester without the team and go on his own.
“I told him: ‘If we went to London and you wanted to stay there, that would be one thing. But this is close, it doesn’t make sense. “The guy was upset. But then we won the game and he asked me again.
“Because I was happy, I gave in a little and said: ‘At least leave on the bus and ask your chauffeur to catch up with you 10 minutes from the stadium, then go as you wish.
“And this guy in the locker-room still wasn’t happy.
The Government of Japan has released $1.5million to fund community stabilisation activities in the North-East region of Nigeria. According to a statement issued on Tuesday, the funds would be utilised through an ongoing programme launched in 2016 and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Nigeria.
The interventions being implemented in the region are aimed at supporting victims of Boko Haram insurgency in the three most affected states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe. According to the statement, the recent release of funds “builds on ongoing activities that the Government of Japan has been supporting which have facilitated the rehabilitation of 20 public infrastructures and provided emergency employment to more than 2,000 Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and returnees”.
Also, more than 4,000 farmers and over 1,000 small businesses have received support with inputs and capital that helped improve and expand their sources of livelihood. The Government of Japan has already invested $6.5million in stabilisation activities in Nigeria’s North-East.
The funding from the Japanese government would be utilised within the framework of Integrated Community Stabilization Programme which UNDP has been implementing in the region intended to directly benefit 125,000 people in the three states. An additional one million people will indirectly benefit from interventions under the project. Implemented through an integrated approach, the project’s goal is to support over 2,200 farmers, 500 small businesses, five community public infrastructures, and provide emergency employment to over 850 community members.
Speaking on the activities in the region, Khardiata Lo Ndiaye, acting UNDP Resident Representative, said: “Stabilization efforts in the North-East are helping families and communities begin to rely less on humanitarian aid and more on themselves. This support from the Government of Japan will go a long way in laying a foundation for development to take place again in the region.”
Ms. Khardiata added that meeting urgent early recovery needs of the crisis-affected communities remained a huge challenge requiring more partners and investment. In his remarks, Shigeru Umetsu, Chargé d’affaires ad interim of Japan to Nigeria, gave the assurance that the Government of Japan would continue to support efforts aimed at restoring stability and livelihoods for the communities in the North-East.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said Nigeria’s current debt profile is among the lowest in the world.
The Vice-President stated this when he spoke at the 50th convocation of the University of Lagos in Akoka yesterday April 1st.
Speaking on the theme: ‘Nigeria Rising: The Path to Prosperity’, Osinbajo said the Buhari-led administration had done well in revamping Nigeria’s economy since assuming office four years ago.
“We restored medium-term planning with the Economic Recovery Growth Plan which served as a useful loadstone in improving macroeconomic performance, boosting the real sector of the economy and building infrastructure. The decline in growth, which started at the end of 2014, has been reversed, inflated has stabilized at about 11 per cent over the past six months and our current account was in the surplus around 1.3 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product last year.
Our foreign reserves can cover at least six months of import of goods and services and despite understandable concerns, our debt burden is only about 22 per cent of the size of our economy, which is one of the lowest ratios in the world.
We have very clear objectives. As you know, the problem of our country is not planning or designing of great projects, it is in the actual implementation. We are fortunate that Muhammadu Buhari is not an orator, he is a doer” he said

There’s been several reports trailing the viral video of little Success Adegor after the lady who recorded her, Stephanie Idolor was accused of demanding an amount of money from the little girl’s parents.
In a video that served rounds a while ago, Stephanie is seen saying that though she is not demanding a sharing formula from the Adegors, she wants one million Naira if the family has realized five million naira.
Stephanie’s demand caused condemnation from social media users who deemed her greedy and implausible for making such demands.
In a new development, Vanguard took to finding out what really went down between the Adegors and Stephanie and what was discovered is shared below,
What actually happened?
A source close to Stephanie and the Adegos told Sunday Vanguard that the Stephanie issue was like the lady trying to squeeze the much she could from the Adegors whom she felt were ignorant.
“The first money someone sent to the lady in Asaba that made the video viral, I think her name is Joyce Imofen, N70, 000, and was, in turn, sent to Stephanie, did not get to the Adegor family. Though the Joyce lady did not disclose the amount given to her, she sent the N70, 000 to Stephanie to give to the Adegors”, the source, a neighbour in the Urban area of Sapele where Stephanie and the Adegors live, said.
The source also alleged that Stephanie did not give the N100, 000 the Adegors gave to her to give Joyce, believed to be resident in Asaba, while the family also allegedly gave Stephanie N400, 000 as compensation.
“But she (Stephanie) went online to say she wants more. So what else does she want?” the neighbour said.
Stephanie’s story
Meanwhile, Stephanie said she was misunderstood.
“Some people are just misunderstanding me. The truth is that I uploaded the video on WhatsApp and Joyce, my friend, saw it and said I should send the video to her”, the lady stated.
“After I sent it to her, she uploaded it on Instagram. Though I was the first to upload it on Instagram, I think hers was more effective because she had more followers.
“She then called me to say people were commenting on the video, and that she had pleaded with Instablog to also upload it, but that they had not responded. I told her the idea was good and, after about an hour, she told me Instablog had approved the video and they had uploaded it”.
Stephanie, who spoke to Sunday Vanguard on phone, said the mistake she made on the Success video was that she was too trusting.
“That is why my friend Joyce uploaded the video and added her name that she was the one who did it and the next thing I knew was the appearance of her bank account details online”, the lady said.
The 23-year-old Higher National Diploma holder from Auchi Polytechnic further narrated that about one day after, Joyce called her to ask her to send her bank account details which she did “and the next thing I saw was N70, 000 deposit alert on my phone, while Joyce told me that I should give it to Success mother, that some persons had donated that sum to assist the little girl”.
Stephanie said Joy didn’t provide evidence that the N70,000 was the exact amount that had been sent to her account and, when Sunday VANGUARD asked if the N70, 000 was handed over to Success mother, she said yes.
“I gave the money to her (Success mother) the night Joyce sent it though her husband was not there. “I have no problem with Success mother.
I just think the girl (friend) in Asaba is the one trying to paint me black and instigate her (Success mother) against me. I sent her the N100, 000 Success mother asked me to give her and I have the evidence.
“She is the one trying to cause a rift between us. She is the one claiming to be the author of the video, telling everybody about what she never did.
At one stage when the thing was becoming too much, I had to use my sister to make her admit to the truth. My sister called her and asked her if she was the one who recorded the video, and she said yes. And when my sister demanded to verify her claim, she started making stories.”
Threat
Stephanie said that at one stage, Joyce demanded for Success mother’s telephone number, explaining that after she sent it to her (Joyce), she called the little girl’s mother threatening to deal with her if she was not compensated.
“I think the threat stopped when she was compensated with N100, 000”, she said. “I have no problem with the Adegors. They are neighbours and we have lived together for years”.
But when Sunday Vanguard confronted her with the claim of the video suggesting that she was demanding for one million naira from the five million naira the Adegors may have got as donation to the little girl, she argued that she was not actually demanding, that she was only complaining.
“I never wanted to talk in that video but when the journalists who interviewed me insisted I should say something about the cash the Adegors had so far received, I told them there was nothing wrong if they had made five million naira and I was given a million naira out of it, not that I wanted a sharing percentage.
The Adegors are supposed to be one who should be grateful for what I have done for them”.
Success’ mum speaks
Mrs Vera Adegor, who although admitted to Sunday Vanguard that the rift between them had been settled, said Stephanie was not saying the truth.
“She did not give me the N70, 000 she claimed to have given me and God can bear me witness. Apart from that, she kept making demand after demand. I never knew about the video until the girl in Asaba called me. She told me she had sent N70, 000 to me and when I confronted her (Stephanie) about the money, she pleaded that she had used the money”, the mother said.
“Since the video went viral, she has been on my neck, making all sorts of requests from us. At first she said the money people gave me was up to five million naira and insisted I should give her one million, five hundred thousand naira. But when she found that I was not yielding, she came down to one million naira.
So far, I have given her N400, 000. I gave her that money before she went online to make the video that she had not been adequately compensated”.
Asked if Stephanie actually took her to the bank to open a joint account, Success mother said,
“Yes, she insisted she wanted to see the account and actually forced me to take her to my bank. I gave her N400, 000 because she said she was not the only one and yet she still went online to do that video online that we had not given her anything”.
Mrs Adegor said, at one point, Stephanie and her sister came to meet her at home demanding that “my husband and l should follow her to the bank, but we refused”
With allegations and counter-allegations raging between neighbours, a source, who craved anonymity, told Sunday Vanguard that the Chairman of Sapele local government area, Chief Eugene Inoaghan, had waded into the matter, calling on the warring parties to ceasefire.
“He (council chair) even promised Stephanie a job but you know she has to do the mandatory NYSC first. But after that, the chairman, I am sure, will do something for her”, the Press Secretary to the Chairman, Malcolm Tagbara, told Sunday Vanguard.
Meanwhile, Stephanie reportedly admitted to Delta State Deputy Speaker, Friday Osanebi, sending her half a million naira and Daddy Showkey adding a hundred thousand naira, and Showkey’s friends also raising an undisclosed sum of money to appreciate her effort.
Success, a primary school pupil in Sapele, had shot into limelight after she was seen in a video, apparently recorded by Staphanie, complaining that she had been sent out of school for not being able to pay examination fee.
The little grumbled in a funny manner and the video quickly went viral on the social media, eliciting reactions that led to donations by well-meaning Nigerians to the girl’s family.
Relationship expert and blogger, Joro Olumofin took to social media to issue a new directive to ladies on what their partner should do after sex.
According to him, it is very wrong and disrespectful for a lady to go to the toilet to clean-up herself after sex with her man.
He also stated that it is the duty of a man to get a wiper, go down on his two knees to clean up his lady after sex.
Sharing a video on his IG page, he wrote;
Everyman should be responsible for cleaning his lady after sex. Men, Go on your 2 knees and clean her with a wipe. If you’re a lady and your man is not doing this. You’re being disrespected. Men, if you don’t clean your lady after sex you should be ashamed of yourself.

A 4th-year Law student of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, COOU, has died in an accident after his faculty sent him home to get a haircut and produce his ID card before being allowed to sit for an exam with his course mates.
Ezeh Goodluck, aka Kasa, arrived at his faculty ready to sit for an exam with his coursemates on Monday, April 1, 2019.
Just before the exam, he uploaded his WhatsApp status. It was a good-humoured post and one that expressed hope that the exam will be in his favour.
But he wasn’t allowed into the exam hall. He was asked to go and get a haircut because his hair didn’t meet faculty standard. He was also asked to produce his ID card before being allowed to sit for the exams.
In his haste to get home in time to produce his ID card and get a haircut, he mounted a bike. Unfortunately, he didn’t arrive at his destination.
The tire of the bike blew and led to a fatal accident. The bike rider died on the spot while Goodluck was flung into a ditch.
He was still alive but unconscious and was rushed to the Chukwuemka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, formerly Anambra State University Teaching Hospital.
A source told LIB that staff at the hospital simply gave him drip and all but allegedly abandoned him for 4 hours. The source also claimed that at about 6 pm, a doctor told friends of the injured student that they didn’t have the facilities needed to treat him and he needed to be transferred to a hospital in Nnewi. He was carried into the ambulance but gave up before they could make it to Nnewi.
A source who spoke to LIB claims the Dean of Law faculty later called the boy’s mother to condole with her but he was not diplomatic about it. He reportedly told the grieving mother that her son should have taken the school’s shuttle bus, instead of the bike which led to his death.
The mother, angered by her son’s senseless death, asked why her son needed an ID card to be allowed in for his exams when he has been a student of the school for 4 years and should be easily identified by his lecturers and colleagues.
Students of the school who spoke with LIB lamented about the state of the school’s Teaching Hospital and revealed that it’s a death trap for students. They said multiple students have died there due to negligence and lack of medical equipment.
Students of COOU intended to protest the death of Goodluck today but due to the ongoing exams, they decided to shelf it.

Ghanaian gospel singer, Piesie Esther has stated that a woman can never be equal to a man, contrary to what feminists are trying so hard to make the world believe today.
According to her, gender equality can never exist because God created the genders for them to be different.
“A woman cannot be equal to a man, there is a reason we were born women and even the Bible says a woman should be humble in the home and the man should love her so where from all this equality?” she queried.
“For me, the man is the head of the house and should be given that respect. There may be things or chores that both partners would want to share which is not bad after all, it is even nice to see a husband give a helping hand to his wife but it should not be a matter of dictatorship.”
Piesie Esther added that she is not ready to fall for the ideology of equality which the Bible never spoke of.
“The Bible that I read and follow does not tell me that I should rub shoulders with my husband so I will not follow any equality trend. I will not do anything that the Bible has not spoken of.”

Nollywood Filmmaker, Charles Novia, has reacted to the recent killing of football fan, Kolade Johnson, by SARS officers in Lagos.
Novia who condemned the act of the SARS officer, pointed out that most Nigerians are rude to armed police officers which is very wrong.
According to him, the man with a gun in his hand is to be respected for the few moments ‘he has that gun undecided on your face.’

One morning in January 2018, when I was still resident in Abuja in my four year hiatus in the city, I drove out of my house in Guzape, and as I drove past the NNPC fuel station, a police patrol team of men with menacing looks on their faces waved me to stop on the road.
One of the things we Nigerians assume and do wrongly most times is to look down on the Policemen when they stop motorists. We don't hide the disdain on our faces most times when we see them and sometimes we talk down on them.
I have always believed this is wrong. I may not like the way the Police operate at times but I don't get rude to any of them when I see them at checkpoints. The man with a gun in his hand is to be respected for those few moments he has that gun undecided on your face.
