Nigerian Bloggers and Rhetorics: Which way forward? – Ade Oni

Going through the numerous outputs of some bloggers in this part of the world these days could be as discouraging as they come as some of them appear to have lost focus.

The challenge they pose is a tragedy of our time, when we thought we should be having the best of time with information dissemination.

Indeed, one could conclude that this era of social media a la blogging and all kinds of news sites comes with its disadvantages and painful consequences.

While it is apt to agree that news is broken immediately it happen through the help of some of these next door social media; but how do you explain the use of obvious exaggeration and rhetorics in some of the outputs of bloggers and their media?

In a bid to grandstand and be commended for coming up with newsworthy materials, it is not uncommon to see these sites resorting to cheap blackmail and repackaging old reports to embarrass the organisation or person concerned.

If what we read in some of these reports should be taken retrospectively, then there is a need to apply decorum, at least for the sake of the reading public and of course the concerned organization (s).

Many readers are worried with the way few of these bloggers dwell on the past and insult the sensibility of the readers in their reports.

One of such reports that threw discerning minds off balance was a story relating to a popular bank, which was repackaged by an online medium as if the incident just happened.

It was reported by the online publication that nine staff of the new generation bank conspired to steal customers’ money running into N600 Million.

The story was not only repackaged, if the figures given in the breakdown are added they are not up to the N600 Million said to have been stolen by the staff of the bank.

This only confirms that some online media are just passionate about creating tension where there is none and misleading members of the public all in a bid to be relevant.

If we are going to get there as a nation, we have to get things right and do things the way they should be done.

Let the bloggers know that to build takes years, but a big edifice can be brought down in a day and when that is done it will take years to build again.

So, why destroying in the first instance, we should be building edifices and institutions.

It is certain that the bank must have handled the matter, when it occurred and do all within its powers to prevent a re-occurence.

Journalism is about timeliness and not writing for the sake of writing. Why repackaging an event that happened long ago, and presenting such as if it just happened?

Imagine a scenario, where it is being reported that the first Nigerian civil war is ongoing, this was an incident that happened about 50 years ago. This could mislead members of the public and cause more damage than good.

Blogging has been taken to a new dimension with what is being reported by some, may be, misinformed or unfocused bloggers, whose pastime is bringing up stale news and making it appear as if it is just breaking.

When issues like these are repeated without caution, then the essence of online media is eroded and slaughtered on the altar of charlatans and uncoordinated writers.

We must do all within our means to avoid publishing reports that have been stale as if they just happened.

Such reports belong to the past and they must be allowed to go into the dustbin of history.

There are so many things to write about today. There are issues that could engage the minds of the readers other than matters that belong to the past.

What comes to mind, when a story is read, especially in an online medium is, “oh it has just happened, ha, there they go again, let us see how it ends.’ But alas it has ended, someone is just trying to be mischievous and score a cheap goal like Argentina’s Diego Maradona in that famed World Cup finals of several years ago.

Social media and blogging sites dwell on immediate occurrences, presenting lucid accounts of fresh happenings and events, rather than bothering the readers with what belongs to the past.

People want to know what is happening now and not then. They want to know if President Muhammadu Buhari has returned from his trip abroad, or if the National Assembly is sitting on Monday to consider the virement proposal of the president, or if anybody has defected from any of the leading political parties in Nigeria and what is the latest about the detained boss of the Department of Stated Security Service (DSS), Lawal Daura and the likes.

We may have started from somewhere, but we can do better than what is being done presently.

When the chips are down only the deep can call to the deep and the future belongs to those, who can do it better and give the people what they need now rather than insulting their sensbilities with old stories that belong to the past.

When things are done ríght, then we will get it right and avoid being left behind by the countries that started with Nigeria and have gone past us in all ramifications.

I have slapped my dad before — Actor Femi Adebayo

Nollywood actor, Femi Adebayo, has opend up on the craziest act he has carried out in his profession and that was slapping his dad, Adebayo Salami, while on the set of a movie production.

While speaking with Sunday Scoop, he said as an actor, one must be ready to do anything to play unbelievable roles.

He stated,

“I have been presented with scripts where I had to slap my father on set and I must do it as an actor.

He has slapped me on set too countless times. The moment we are acting, I don’t see him as my father anymore; I see him as a colleague and we need to interpret our roles very well. He trained me and he is my boss in the industry.

He has taught me not to fear whenever I come across a bigger actor or someone like him on set. But the moment the director says stop, I prostrate to him and apologise.”

Similarly, Femi Adebayo said he and his father decided to support Jigan with their viral ‘Sho Mo Age Mi Ni’ skit on Instagram.

He said,

“Jigan is more like a boy to us. When he came out with the trend, we felt we could do a skit to endorse it. The irony was in asking my biological father if he knew my age.”

Adebayo, who recently featured in an English movie, The Island, insisted that he had no regrets being a Yoruba actor.

He said:

“The only difference between an English and Yoruba movie is the language but the reaction as well as interpretation, most times, are the same. Given another chance, I would still prefer to come into the industry as a Yoruba actor because it has made me know my culture. All my days in school, I was taught a foreign culture and language.

Later, I had the opportunity of learning about my culture, which I would not have learnt if I had started as an English actor. Majority of the people who started with English movies don’t have the opportunity I have had.”

He, however, admitted that there was no way Yoruba actors would earn more than English actors. Femi Adebayo said:

“English is a general language and it is universally accepted, unlike the Yoruba language. We cannot expect a Yoruba movie to have the same audience as an English movie. The majority of Yoruba movies’ fans are Yoruba people.

Based on this, English movies make more money because it has a wider market. But I don’t regret being a Yoruba actor. We have many Yoruba actors who are very comfortable and Yoruba actors are better appreciated outside their environment than English actors. We get more accolades from our fans.”

“Why female celebrities find it hard to stay married” – Anita Joseph reveals

Nollywood actress, Anita Joseph has given her thoughts on female celebrities and their inability to stay married as long as marriage should go.

She had an interview recently with Sunnewsonline and when she was asked the question pertaining to the above mentioned, she had this to say,

Civilisation has its disadvantages and this is one of them. As women work, they have become independent and will not take any form of abuse from a man. It used to be that every mum had a business or was just a stay-at-home mum taking care of the kids; but now the status quo has changed. Women now work and can make the decision to leave if they are not being treated right, not minding where the upkeep is coming from, as they can provide for themselves and their children.

Anita Joseph reveals

Read excerpts from her interview below,

Would you then say it is the fear of becoming old maids, without a man to call their own that compelled some actresses to opt for single motherhood?

I won’t really be able to assume and generalise on this one, but I know it is a matter of choice. In all we do, we should choose the right thing and be happy. If having a baby makes them happy, that’s all good. Our career is hectic and busy, so sometimes one forgets the priorities. It is always good to remember that and create a balance.

Or is it that actresses don’t get it right when it comes to marriage?

No, it is not that actresses don’t get it right in marriage. Marriage is between two people, and if it breaks up, it is not the fault of the woman alone. It takes two to tango.

What are your no-go areas when it comes to relationships; can you forgive a cheating husband?

To me, a man that cheats is saying, ‘I prefer someone else’ so what is the point? I will forgive but forgiveness is not reconciliation. If he is not satisfied with me, Anita, then he belongs to someone else.

Is it an option to leave a marriage that is not working?

It is not a spur of the moment thing. It happens like that because of our job. Being busy while in a relationship, you think you know the person, but he turns out to be someone who you don’t recognise, and you run for cover. It is a natural phenomenon. But I would advise couples to look before leaping.

Why Duncan Mighty Bowed To Davido

Music lovers went agog over last week as they tried to understand why 34-year-old Duncan Mighty attempted a stoop down for 25-year-old Davido, who was on a recent visit to Port Harcourt.

After Duncan Mighty shared the video of him bowing to Davido on his Instagram page, the decorated ‘port harcourt’s first son’ was criticised for belittling himself before the ‘nwababy’ singer, who met him in the music business

However, Duncan Mighty’s manager, Michael Gabriel, has come out to explain why that gesture was done, attributing it to ;sheer happiness’.

He said ;

“Duncan was just happy to have Davido in the Niger Delta; it was the first time he would visit for a video shoot. How many top artistes come to Port Harcourt? Everyone goes to Dubai, South Africa and other places to shoot videos. It is a big deal for someone like Davido to come to Port Harcourt and for Duncan Mighty to collaborate with him as well. He didn’t plan to bow to anyone; he was just excited. But people misinterpreted his gesture. Sometimes, there is no need to react to things like this because you will only give people more reasons to talk. When I mentioned it to him, he just focused on other things and wanted to know the next thing on the agenda.”

IK Osakioduwa reveals how his wardrobe malfunctions exposed parts that should’ve been covered

IK Osakioduwa reveals

Nigerian radio and television on-air personality, Ikponmwosa Osakioduwa has gradually become a force to be reckoned with when it comes to the entertainment sector.

However, IK as he is fondly called now, is only human and he’s bound to make mistakes at one point in life, and in this excerpt from an interview he had with Punch’s Kore Ogidan, he opened up on his most embarrassing moment as a live television host

As a live TV host, what’s been your most embarrassing moment?

He said ;

I’ve made so many mistakes that I don’t know for sure which the most embarrassing one was. I have had wardrobe malfunction that exposed parts that should have been covered, fallen off a stage before. I have made ridiculous mistakes with scripts and even stumbled over saying my own name. Whatever the blunder, coming back from it is always the same road. Acknowledge the mistake (sometimes even to the audience); dust it off; then give it all you’ve got after that. You will find your feet. You are only human. Mistakes will happen.

Lionel Messi’s brother jailed for illegal gun possession

Matias, the elder brother of Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has been sentenced for possessing an illegal firearm. The 35-year-old received a two-and-a-half year prison sentence on Thursday, August 16, but instead of doing time in prison, he will undertake community service.

Matias who has has been linked with known criminals in the past, was held for 16 hours in a prison cell in 2015 after officers found an unlicensed 22-calibre gun in his car. He was also arrested In 2008 for allegedly having a loaded gun in his belt.

Nina speaks on buying her certificate from IMSU

Former Big Brother Naija Housemate, Nina spoke to PUNCH about her life before the reality TV show, life after the show, and of course the controversy surrounding her recent graduation from school.

According to her, she didn’t buy her university certificate, refuting the rumour being spread in some quarters.

She also spoke about her career, life aspirations and other ex-housemates on the show.

Read below:

Background

My upbringing was exciting and I didn’t lack anything. Though I wasn’t born with a silver spoon, my parents did all they could do to give my siblings and I the best. We are five children; I am the fourth child but the last girl. I have two sisters and two brothers. My mother is a businesswoman and a contractor, while my father has stopped working.

He was an engineer prior to retirement. My parents are very strict Christians. My mother, for instance, doesn’t believe in pampering children. All the times I misbehaved, she didn’t hesitate to use the cane or slap me. Till today, she doesn’t tolerate any form of indiscipline from her children.

I have always wanted to be a celebrity and a wealthy woman. I guess my dream is coming to reality.

Education

For my elementary education, I attended Wesley International Nursery and Primary School, Owerri, Imo State. I later proceeded to the Federal Government Girls College, Umuahia, Abia State. I recently finished my university education at the Imo State University, Owerri, where I studied English Language and Literary Studies.

Parental support

Inasmuch as I was brought up in a strict way, my parents have always seen me as a go-getter and they are usually surprised by the things I do despite my young age. They have always given me the freedom to do the things that I like to do.

Even though I didn’t inform them that I wanted to go for the Big Brother Naija audition, they didn’t try to stop me when I told them about it. My mother was only worried that it could affect my studies, but I assured her I would catch up once I was done with the reality show. My parents have always supported my dreams.

BBNaija

When I was selected for BBNaija 2018, I didn’t go into the house with the intention of winning; I just wanted to be among the top five. But at some point, I didn’t think I would last long in the house as I became scared and overshadowed by other housemates. Being among the last five was a big surprise to me; I think God has a hand in my feat.

Changes

A lot of things have changed about me. I have a business of my own and I am open to a lot of opportunities right now. I am known by many now and also a graduate.

Graduation

I am happy I was able to graduate with my peers despite the time I spent at BBNaija. I am aware that a lot of people think I bought my certificate, but I really worked hard when I returned to school. I spoke with my lecturers on the way forward and I was asked to retake the examinations I missed.

I had to sit for two examinations within a short period. I didn’t miss assignments and tests; I submitted all my assignments before I went for Big Brother.

Pressure

It has not been easy coping with the expectations and challenges that come with fame. Sometimes, I wish I could go back to my life before BBNaija but it is not possible. If wishes were horses, beggars would ride. Yes, truly I wish I could still go back to the former Nina because I don’t have my privacy any longer. I cannot even live the way I want, as people are watching me closely.

Picture theft

According to my business page handler, she collected a photo from someone and used it on my page because we had the hair. The next thing I saw was a lady accusing me of using her hair to promote my business.

I try to ignore many things and replying her was unnecessary. I only used her picture; I didn’t take her hair. I don’t need negative things in my life, which explains why I didn’t take it seriously. I have developed a thick skin to negative comments and criticisms. I am getting used to social media and its drama, though I try as much as possible to stay away from it.

Men

To be honest with you, I meet admirers every day but I don’t take them seriously. I feel they are all interested in my fame. I am just friends with people who knew me before I became famous.

Miracle

Based on past experience, I try to keep my relationship private. My relationship with Miracle is personal. I regard myself as a romantic lady;as long as I love the person.

Acid threat on Cee-C

I don’t really want to talk about their issues (Cee-C, Tobi and Alex), but I don’t have anything against any former housemate. The fact that I have decided not to say a word on their feud doesn’t mean I didn’t see it.

Current projects

We are working on our new body products; soaps, creams and others. I am currently collaborating with Tiannah’s Empire and we will announce it soon. People can call me whatever they like but I call myself a businesswoman.

Fashion

I have always loved fashion since my childhood. The way I dress depends on my mood and where I’m heading to. However, I like pink and black colours.

Relaxation

I like to swim and stay indoors with my loved ones. Whenever I am home, I like to watch movies or read books on romance and business.

FCMB Promotes Entrepreneurship Among the Youths, Urge Innovation

Leading financial services provider, First City Monument Bank (FCMB) has once again demonstrated its commitment towards the empowerment of youths in entrepreneurship by sponsoring a capacity building programme for almost 1,000 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Abuja on July 30th, 2018.

Tagged ‘’Youth Entrepreneurship and Empowerment Programme’’, it was in partnership with Activate Success Foundation. The highly engaging, interactive and exciting session provided a platform for the youth corpers to look inward, develop and deploy their business skills through practical trainings facilitated by experts and successful business owners.

According to the Bank, the development will go a long way to empower them with the requisite resources to start and grow successful businesses during and after their service year in order to become financially independent and contribute significantly to national development.

Commenting on the initiative, the Executive Director, Retail Banking of FCMB, Mr. Olu Akanmu, said it is in line with the commitment of the Bank to provide multiple opportunities that would inspire and enable youths to be actively engaged and eventually become successful business owners.

These features give account holders the freedom to bank on the go, using the Flexx Mobile App and also the Bank’s USSD code, *329#.

Daddy Freeze slams Pastor Adeboye’s son over his Islamophobic post

Convener of the Free The Sheeple Nation and on air personality, Daddy Freeze has thrown a jab at son of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adeboye, Leke Adeboye over an Islamophobic post the latter made recently.

Leke Adeboye had insinuated on his Instagram page that the greatest threat to Islam in Nigeria is the RCCG. Throwing a direct shade at Freeze, Leke also said that someone is paying the ‘Free The Sheeple’ leader to write posts against the RCCG, and once in a while attach Islam is good to his post.

Leke wrote in full,

The greatest threat to Islam in Nigerian is RCCG and Winners, along with the churches of the same belief. It’s now clear why someone is against us constantly, they need to keep posting because someone is paying them. Even if the post doesn’t make any sense at all. Their given assignment is you just keep looking for how to discredit them and then once in a while add that Islam is a good religion too. Interesting. Everyone is just doing their own assignment.

In reaction, Daddy Freeze wrote,

Dear Leke,
Are you trying to say that Islam is a bad religion? Or is your doltish write up, trying to imply that RCCG and Winners were set up to ‘threaten’ Islam?

Why you no gree get sense like this? As you old so, come swell like pussycat pregnancy sense still far from you?

When brains were handed out were u playing truant? When you were born, did people forget to congratulate your dad? Because I don’t get it…?

Anyway, write these words down in marble and please do me a favor, show them to your daddy and his boys.

YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO FIND JESUS IN A MOSQUE THAN IN RCCG. ~FRZ.

10 surprisingly common ways people die in their sleep

Next to eating a healthy diet and getting enough exercise, getting adequate sleep is a staple cornerstone to a healthy life. But did you know that sleeping can also be dangerous?

There are actually a number of things that can go wrong when you close your eyes and slip into unconsciousness—and for some people, the danger is real enough that they never wake up again. In fact, according to an ancient Greek proverb, death and sleep are brothers.. death being the perfect fulfillment of sleep and sleep being the imperfect embodiment of death.

Sleep has, for the most part, always been seen as a “passive” activity that our body performs on its own. But the truth is that our brain is actually quite active while we slumber. It is also true that there are many unanswered mysteries about sleep that modern scientists have yet to unravel.

As it turns out, there are still some surprising (and somewhat scary) things going on when our conscious brains turn off and our bodies begin the sleeping state. And sometimes, the results can be completely terrifying.

10 Sudden Cardiac Arrest

Sudden cardiac arrest, also known as SCA, can occur when the sinoatrial node, which is the node in the heart that is essentially your body’s natural pacemaker, becomes impaired. In other words, this condition occurs when the electrical systems of the heart malfunction. And in some cases, it is deadly within the first few minutes. How does it kill? Well, it basically reduces blood flow to the brain. And the scariest part? Not only can it happen during sleep, but half of cases show no symptoms before the cardiac arrest occurs.

9 Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon monoxide, or CO, is a colorless, odorless gas that can be lethal if too much of it is breathed into the lungs. It can be found in the fumes that come from running cars, stoves, grills, fireplaces, gas ranges, furnaces, and so on, and it can be almost impossible to detect unless a carbon monoxide detector is in use.

How does it kill? Basically, if enough of it builds up in a small enough space, breathing it in can become toxic. And if you inhale enough of it, just having it in your lungs can be enough to “seal the deal” in a very final way. If awake, the victim may experience symptoms like dizziness, weakness, a headache, or an upset stomach. But what if it catches you while you’re asleep? Well, people who are sleeping often experience no symptoms, and they can die in their sleep before they even realize that it’s happening

8 Myocardial Infarction

A myocardial infarction, more commonly known as a heart attack, can happen during sleep, though thankfully, the odds are pretty good that this specific type of cardiac event will wake its victim up before it kills them.

Heart attacks happen when blood flow to part of the heart gets blocked. This blockage can destroy part of the heart muscle.

How does it kill? If enough heart tissue gets damaged, the heart may not be strong enough to pump any blood out to the rest of the body. This can result in heart failure, which could be lethal if medical treatment isn’t obtained immediately.

Unfortunately, it isn’t usually possible for a heart attack victim to seek medical attention if they are asleep—and that is the part that’s terrifying.

7 Central Sleep Apnea

Central sleep apnea is basically a disorder that causes the sufferer’s breathing to stop and start repeatedly while they are unconscious. It happens when the brain doesn’t send the proper electrical signals to the muscles that control the breathing mechanisms during sleep and is believed to originate from a problem in the brain stem.

How does it kill? Basically, if the case of apnea is bad enough, hypoxemia may set in—which happens when oxygen levels in the body fall below those required for normal life function. This basically leads to oxygen deprivation.

If the brain is not able to rouse the body in enough time to take a breath, the prognosis can be fatal!

6 Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome

This is undoubtedly one of the more “mysterious” inclusions in our list.

Unexplained nocturnal death syndrome (SUNDS) was first reported in 1917. Since then, it has gained a pretty scary reputation in both textbooks and on the dark corners of the Internet In the Philippines, they call it Bangungut, and in Hawaii, they call it Dream Disease.
The exact cause of death among those who die of SUNDS is actually still unclear, but the presentation always seems to be similar. It basically causes otherwise young, healthy individuals to die in their sleep for seemingly no reason.

How does it kill? Scientists still aren’t sure . . . but it tends to occur frequently in Southeast Asia, and researchers suspect a range of possible explanations, from malfunctions of the ion channel to ventricular fibrillation.

5 Cerebral Aneurysm

A cerebral aneurysm, also known as a brain aneurysm, is basically a weak spot in the wall of a blood vessel in the brain. It is kind of like a thin ballon that fills with blood. But over time, as the blood pumps through the artery, it continues to weaken and swell—and if the pressure increases too much, a rupture can occur.

How does it kill? When an aneurysm ruptures, the bleeding usually only lasts for a few seconds. But the blood causes damage to the surrounding brain cells and can increase the pressure inside the skull If the pressure elevates too much, the condition can quickly turn fatal.

4 Enterovirus D68

This is one of the more obscure entries on our list, but that makes it no less terrifying.

Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is a type of non-polio enterovirus that was first identified back in 1962. But back in 2014, there was a huge increase in the number of reported cases, leaving researchers to wonder if the virus was going to become more predominant in coming years than they had expected.

The scary thing about EV-D68 is that while it usually causes mild to severe respiratory illness symptoms, it sometimes produces no symptoms at all. And yet, physicians are saying that the disease has the potential to be more dangerous than Ebola in the US.

How does it kill? It can cause particularly severe respiratory problems, characterized by a high-pitched wheezing sound that has become a dreaded earmark of infection. It has also been associated with muscle weakness and spinal cord inflammation, which is perhaps even more terrifying than the wheezing.

Dying of an infection is not necessarily common, but sometimes, the symptoms are dangerous enough to kill—even if the victim is asleep.

3 Dry Drowning

Most of us are aware that you can drown in the water. This seems like a no-brainer. But a lot of people are not familiar at all with the term “dry drowning” and what it means.

And as it turns out, it is a pretty horrific way to die!

Basically, the idea behind this danger is that it is a type of drowning that can occur even after the victim has left the water. It is technically still drowning, but “dry drowning” is the term that has come to be used to describe it, though some doctors have argued for the dropping of said term.

It can occur when inhaled water, even just a drop or two, makes it past the throat and into the lungs. This usually causes symptoms, but they are sometimes mild and easy to miss.

The scary thing is that this water can cause breathing problems that get worse over time. And in some cases, these breathing problems don’t strike until hours, or even days later—after the victim has fallen asleep. So-called “dry drowning” is actually pretty rare when you look at total deaths attributed to drowing, but this makes it no less disturbing.

How does it kill? It basically asphyxiates the victim—depriving them of oxygen until they suffocate.

2 The Widow Maker Heart Attack

While most heart attacks have a decent chance of waking their victims up before death occurs, the “widow maker” tends to be an exception. We have already mentioned heart attacks in general once on this list, but this particular type of infarction deserves its own spot.

Why? Because it is among the deadliest types of heart attacks that can occur. It happens when the left main artery, also known as the left anterior descending artery, gets blocked. A 100-percent blockage in this artery is almost always fatal without immediate emergency care—hence the nickname.

How does it kill? Heart attacks with severe enough blockages result in damaged heart muscle. And if the muscle becomes too damaged to pump blood, the result can be fatal.

1 Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder in which the victim repeatedly stops and starts their breathing process during sleep. OSA is by far the most common type of sleep apnea, and as it turns out, it is also probably the most likely reason that a person may die in their sleep.

This type of sleep apnea is literally caused by an obstruction that blocks the airway. This obstruction is usually caused by sagging throat muscles, though the muscles and tissues of the tongue, uvula, tonsils, and soft palate can all play a part. It is estimated that as many as 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea but that 80 percent of cases go undiagnosed—making it a true “silent killer” that many people remain unaware of.

How does it kill? People with OSA experience sudden drops in blood oxygen levels when they stop breathing . . . and if they are already at risk for a heart attack, stroke, or heart failure, then OSA can be the trigger that sets a sudden cardiac event into motion.

In such cases, death may occur before the victim even has a chance to wake up.

“We’ll use 8,000 corps members for Osun State governorship poll next month” – INEC

INEC has said that it will deploy over 8,000 members of the National Youth Service Coprs, serving in Osun state as ad hoc staff in the conduct of the September 22 governorship poll holding in the state.

According to the Resident Electoral Commissioners in the state, Olusegun Agbaje, “over 8,000 corps members are part of the expected 15,000 ad-hoc staff who are going to use for the conduct of the September governorship election. We have already sourced for over 90 per cent of the ad hoc staff we are going to be requiring for the election and most of them are from the higher institutions around.”

He also stated that the commission registered a total number of 1, 677, 384 voters as against 1, 407, 000 of 2014 but said out of these persons, 1, 144, 273, representing 68.5 per cent had collected their permanent voter cards while there were still 524, 251 uncollected cards.

The REC said, “We want to improve on the 2014 performance. We want to start by 8 am in all polling units across all local government areas of the state. This time around accreditation and voting would be done simultaneously. I want to also implore the electorate to eschew any attempt to bribe or accept bribe from anyone during the poll because that is a violation of the Electoral Act and anyone who does that would be arrested and prosecuted.”

Lagos State government bans the sale of sallah rams on highways

As Muslims prepare for celebration of the Id-el-Kabir festival, the Lagos State Government has banned the sale of rams on highways and major roads.

The state’s Commissioner for the Environment, Babatunde Durosinmi- Etti, who spoke with Journalists, said it was necessary to enlighten Lagosians to show utmost love for their environment, even as they celebrate.

According to him, the law which forbids street tradings also outlaws the display of rams on major highways, road medians, lay-byes, gardens and parks across the state. Durosinmi-Etti said the administration of Akinwunmi Ambode had been in the forefront of the campaign for healthy people and cleaner environment, thus encouraging Lagosians to desist from acts that could have negative impacts on the environment.

The commissioner, who wished all Muslim adherents a happy celebration, urged Lagosians to respect the environment, bear in mind that a lot of waste would be generated during the Sallah and dispose of animal waste properly as well as bag their refuse and put at designated points.

He said: “to guide against the outbreak of epidemics, residents of this state must always ensure that they handle waste in the most appropriate way.”
