“No international women’s day for Dapchi girls’ mothers, their children are still missing” — Actress Maryam Charles

While the rest of the world were celebrating the International Women’s day yesterday, 8th of March, 2018, the mothers of kidnapped Dapchi girls were filled with bitterness as their children are still yet to be found.

Insurgents believed to be from a faction of Boko Haram invaded the girls’ school on Monday 19 Feb. 2018 and it was later on confirmed by the Federal Government that 110 students of the Government Science and Technical College in Dapchi, Yobe State have been so far unaccounted for.

Nollywood actress, Maryam Charles, in light of this expressed her heart break over the fact that the girls are still yet to be found – sharing the pain of the traumatized mothers who are yet to find their kids, she wrote:

We celebrated International Women’s Day yesterday but for mothers in Dapchi, Yobe state, the day was bad. Their children are still missing having said to be taken by Boko Haram. I am heart broken by this and I can’t even imagine what they are going through at the moment.i really do hope they are found soon.

To all women working to provide a better life for themselves and their family, don’t stop.keep striving, keep working. The voices that seek to stop you may be many but, don’t listen. You are strong, you are brave.
I really hope our government is doing all they can to bring the girls back home because every minute wasted is a shame on our great nation.

A statement from the office of the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, revealed the figure after a meeting between a Federal Government Delegation and representatives of key stakeholders, including the state government, the college, the parents, security agencies and Bursari local government, where Dapchi is situated, in Damaturu on February 25th.

He said, based on the briefings from the Principal of the College, Hajia Adama Abdulkarim, and the state Commissioner for Education, Hon. Mohammed Lami, 906 students – out of whom 110 have not been accounted for – were in the school on the day of the attack.

#BBNaija 2018: Ahneeka opens up about her ‘attraction’ to Teddy A and ‘cute’ K.Brule

Evicted Big Brother Naija housemate, Ahneeka has spoken with Pulse about her supposed ‘attraction’ to fellow Big Brother Naija housemates, Teddy A and K.Brule.

During a Facebook Live interview with Pulse.ng, a fan mentioned that the evicted housemate had told Biggie that she had feelings for fellow housemates, Teddy A and K.Brule.

In response to the comment, Ahneeka revealed that apart from Teddy’s looks, which she admits makes him the hottest guy in the house, the up-and-coming musician falls flat to her.

K Brule BBnaija.
K Brule.

On her relationship with K. Brule

Ahneeka said she had connected with the disqualified housemate because, just like K.Brule, she knows what it means to be downtrodden.

Can you guys bring the Ahneeka that was in the house because I don’t know what you guys are talking about?

I just connected to K.Brule because he just was cute. Not just physically, the guy is cute; spirit and looks. Also, I don’t know if I’m a sucker for a lost cause, but I just like people who are downtrodden and people like to step on them.

I just like to know that “yo, you’re not alone’ because I have felt like that in my life, and I just like to relate with those kind of people.

K.Brule is nice, he is so nice. His spirit is so true, so I just connected with him on that level.

On feelings for Teddy A

Teddy is probably the hottest guy in the house because he is very tall and likes to swag it up. But, outside of that, Teddy falls flat to me.

I don’t see Teddy as… Please just play your game and come out of there, nothing else. You’re cute, but mmm… Bye Felicia.

I didn’t tell Biggie that I was in love with Teddy A. I probably was complaining that I couldn’t connect to Teddy because of Bambam.

For some reason in the house, anytime I tried to talk to any guy in the house, people made it look like I was trying to steal their man. And Bambam was my girl so I couldn’t have her thinking like that, even though at some point she did.

So I was staying away from Teddy and he was making it known that I was being too reserved – It’s because of your [Teddy A] babe [Bambam].

I could flow with you, you could be my G, but I’m just respectful to your babe and not to start some drama in the house.

So that was just my concern. I couldn’t connect to the guys because of their wives.

Nigerian women want access to abortion

The National Council for Women Societies (NCWS) has appealed to the Federal Government to remove legal restrictions on abortion to ensure safe services.

Mrs Gloria Shoda, President of NCWS, made call at a one day sensitisation workshop for women on ‘Unsafe Abortion’ organised in collaboration with IPAS as part of activities to mark the 2018 International Women’s Day in Abuja.

Shoda attributed the failure to reduce the high rate of death from unsafe abortion in Nigeria to lack of access to safe abortion.

She said that there have been an increasing number of abortion cases throughout the world.

The president said the situation had been fuelled by social and economy vices, adding that unsafe abortion accounted for over 70,000 deaths annually worldwide, Nigeria inclusive.

Shoda said that where enabling laws are available, deaths and disabilities from abortion are greatly reduced.

She said most times services are expensive and facilities are often poorly equipped in terms of manpower and materials necessary to handle abortion emergencies.

She urged women to embrace the use of contraceptives to reduce the incidences of unwanted pregnancies, which could lead to unsafe abortion.

“We also encourage our young girls to abstain from sex until marriage,” she said.

Lady who embarrassed Olamide at Germany hotel speaks: “I wanted an apology for his 20 minutes performance”

The Germany based Nigerian lady identified as Jacobs May, who embarrassed Nigerian music superstar, Olamide, in Germany has told her side of the story.

Jacobs, whose video about her altercation with Nigerian hip hop artiste Olamide went viral last week, has shared her own version of the much reported incident.

She said all she wanted when she challenged Olamide at a hotel lounge was an apology for his rather short performance when fans had expected “something better” during a show in Germany.

Read her interview with Punch Metro below;

What do you do?

My name is Jacobs May. I am a Germany-based Nigerian entertainer. I am a dancer and I own a dancing school which focuses on African contemporary dance. As a Nigerian in the Diaspora, I try to use my dance to promote the Nigerian heritage.

What led to the fight in the video?

I really did not want to talk further about the Olamide issue, but I saw a video on YouTube and this made me realise some Nigerians still have no clue or an in-depth understanding of what exactly happened in the video.

The organisers approached me, six weeks to the show, asking me to invest €6,000 in the show as Olamide will be in Germany to perform. I told them the notification was too short for me to invest that kind of money.

Three weeks to the show, they contacted me again, begging me to use my photograph to promote the show, which I accepted to do. I also posted the photo on my Facebook and Instagram pages and even told my followers and other people to get their own tickets.

So, were you at the event?

Yes, I was at the event. I bought a VIP ticket for €100, though I was not supposed to pay, considering the fact that I was used to advertise the show, but I did it to support them.

What happened between you and Olamide at the event?

Olamide and I didn’t have any confrontation at the show, but his attitude was so annoying that I had to confront him after the show. It wasn’t an Olamide show but he was the main artiste. Some other Nigerian artistes also featured in the show.

What did he do at the show?

I was told that Olamide arrived at the hotel where I also lodged on Saturday and he was scheduled to perform at 1:00am on Sunday. But to my amazement, Olamide came up at 3:30am, having kept people waiting for two hours.

By the time he came on stage, fans were furious. People were already drunk and they started flinging objects onto the stage. I was seated on the VIP section, which was mounted on the stage. I was part of the people who got hit by a bottle and I almost collapsed on stage. People, including me, got so angry after Olamide performed for only 20 minutes. People paid so much to watch your performance and you put up a shabby performance and for just 20 minutes.

Olamide

So, what happened after the show?

Like I mentioned earlier, I lodged in the same hotel as Olamide. I got to know when he arrived on Saturday because I have been in the hotel since Friday.

Since we were in the same hotel, I walked up to him in the lobby at daybreak to explain what had happened to me as a result of him coming late on stage. I approached him as a civil person and told him what had happened to me. I also told him that it was unfair that he flew seven hours only for a 20-minute show. I confronted him with the fact that it was disrespectful of him to have come late and not to apologise to his fans and to also throw a 20-minute performance for fans that have waited over two hours for him.

I was dazed when he stood up and walked out on me.

What happened thereafter?

I was full of rage when he showed no concern, compassion or remorse. That was when I brought out my phone to record the whole incident. Perhaps if he was polite I would have accepted his apology and walked quietly to my room; but his attitude led to the fiasco.

Just like it is often said that pride goes before a fall, there was no way I would tolerate such an attitude.

Did you contact the organisers of the show?

Yes, I did.

What was their reaction to the video?

They did a video disclaiming my accusations and saying it was a wrong move.

What do you intend doing to them?

I am suing them. I will make sure no show is done here again if the security of the people cannot be guaranteed.

Did Olamide contact you after the video went viral?

No. In fact, I believe there is no need for that. His arrogance would not even let him do such.

The manager said you were only trying to get Olamide’s attention. Is it true?

That is not true, but I’m not surprised because I wouldn’t have expected less; that is so typical of Nigerians. I had no clue he was staying at the hotel before I lodged there.

Of course, what do you expect his manager to say? Sure, they will always make it sound bad for me, but I care less. I just said things the way they are and I am sure next time he wouldn’t try such and other artistes will also learn from this.

BBNaija 2018: Nina and Miracle pray before having sex – Dee-one

Evicted housemate of the ongoing Big Brother reality TV show, Dee-One, has made a shocking revelation about his fellow housemates at the show.

Speaking on individual housemates, Dee-one revealed that Bam Bam as is widely known got into the show as a dedicated Christian and she apparently preached the word of God to her fellow housemates at some point.

DeeOne

Dee-one who was reacting to the scene of Bambam and Teddy A having sex in the toilet, also disclosed that Nina and Miracle always read the Bible, pray before engaging in their sexual activities.

He accused Nigerians of pretending, adding that housemates were encouraged to do anything in the house before going in.

Dee-One who spoke on Fly TV, said, “Nigerians are funny. They’ll be like ‘be yourself do what ever you want’ but when you do it they will turn against you saying ‘no o no o.’” and I’m thinking, ‘whats happening?’

“Some people said, ‘Bambam is such a dedicated girl. A chorister in her church. Why should she bring such a shame in her family.

“I’m like ‘What’s this?’ Bambam came to us, even me…as a spiritual person. I mean, as someone that receives messages from God.

“She told us that God speaks through her and sometimes we even wanted to go to her to know who would be leaving the house first.

“She told us that when she prays and gets information from God, some people would not understand her because they don’t connect to her level.

“Even Nina and Miracle, there was something they were doing. In the evening they will pray. When they want to sleep they’ll read Bible, pray then lie down and have sex.

“I used sperm for pimple treatment and it actually worked” – Nigerian Sex Therapist Says, Shares Photos To Prove.

A Nigerian sex therapist, with name, Angel Nwosu on Facebook, has said that she hates to break it to the world but using semen to treat pimples actually works, cause she’s a testimony.

Angel took to Facebook to share how it actually was an accident, how she got semen on her face but hey! disappointments could be blessings eh? She said at that moment she’d remembered some of the effects semen could possibly posses and so she did trial and error.

The result eventually came out good for her and she decided to share. She wrote:

I used SPERM for pimple treatment, and am slightly disgusted to report that it actually worked?

Yes ladies! your man can indeed help you to have golden glowing face. It may sound weird but trust me when I say it works and it’s the best. Sperm is good for skin care. Proteins and other nutrients rich in sperm can help for a flawless facial treatment.

My mother always told me, “You don’t need a man to be beautiful,” but that belief was dangerously threatened recently. I won’t go into the details (trust me, it was more awkward than sexy), but whether it was a lack of communication or an accident, I ended up covered in sperm — and I was pretty pissed off about it. Then, I remembered my research and snagged some of the sperm we were both covered in to put on the pimples on my face.

The next day… I woke up minus pimples!!!Honestly, I had no intention of putting sperm on my pimple before the deed. Let’s just say it was a blowjob gone wrong with my spiritual husband, that I ended up benefiting from, ighotago?

So next time you make love, try save up some sperm and apply on your face, make sure to thank me later.

Udo!

Your thoughts on this?

It should be recalled that some months back, shocking photos made the rounds online which showed a young lady applying sperm all over her face…

She’d claimed that since sperm is good for the skin, her boyfriend suggested she tried it on and she actually took his word for it and not only tried it but took pictures and uploaded them online. (Story + Photo here)

Neymar wants to return to Barcelona

Neymar already regrets moving to Paris Saint-Germain and is seeking a shock return to Barcelona, according to reports in the Spanish media on Friday.

In the same week that PSG crashed out of the Champions League, and only seven months after he joined the club for a world record 222million euros ($264 million, Neymar´s future has become uncertain.

Spanish sports newspaper Mundo Deportivo claims the Brazilian, recovering from surgery on a broken foot in Brazil, has made contact with Barca to ask how he can engineer a return.

The article adds Neymar has explained he made a mistake in leaving the club, was wrong to want independence from Lionel Messi and has been disappointed by the standard of opposition in Ligue 1.

Barca, however, is not the only club Neymar is reportedly targeting as a potential way out of PSG.

Madrid-based newspaper AS reports Neymar´s father has met with Real Madrid, who are ready to pay 400million euros to sign the striker.

Asked about the speculation on Friday, Real coach Zinedine Zidane said: “Neymar could play in all the clubs because he is very good, like many players.

“I´m not going to talk about a player that is not mine. On the 400 million, they paid 220 million and when they bought me they paid 72.

“It seemed crazy to me and 10 years later they are paying 220 million. It can be that in the next 10 years someone will pay 400m, or sooner, I do not know.”

Mundo Deportivo concedes Neymar´s courting of Barcelona may even be a tactic to justify a move to Real, given the Catalan club are likely to reject any chance to re-sign the 26-year-old.

Barcelona are still embroiled in a financial dispute over a bonus due to Neymar last summer, which the club cancelled when they believe it became clear he was moving to PSG.

Neymar missed PSG’s last 16 loss to Real on Tuesday after undergoing surgery on a broken foot in Brazil last week.

#BBNaija: Not all contents of what happens in the Big Brother house is televised — Angel

Evicted Big brother Naija 2018 housemate, Angel has disclosed that not all contents of what happens in the house are televised.

Angel who spoke to Pulse said after his eviction, he realised that most of the housemates’ interactions were not shown to the viewers.

Recall that, Angel and Ahneeka, both strategic partners, were evicted from the house after scoring the lowest votes.

He said, ”Obviously I realized when I came out that, much of the content that was gathered could not be shown.

”So most of our interactions were not televised.”

When asked who the best couple in the house was, the Bayelsa- born ex-housemate said Nina and Miracle were into honest relationship.

According to him, when Nina started hanging out with Miracle, she changed, saying she started making genuine changes and effort.

“Not all Nollywood movies should be in the cinemas” – Rita Dominic Says; AY, Don Pedro Obaseki Reacts.

After Nollywood veteran actress, Rita Dominic gave a comment recently on the quality of Nollywood movies that show in the cinemas, there have been various reactions to her stance.

Rita had taken to her Instagram page to share a quote on why there are bad films.

She also stated that not all Nollywood movies should be in cinemas, advising filmmakers to ensure that the quality of their work matches the hype they create for it.

Rita shared,

Her notion has caused some people in her field to react, as producer, Don Pedro Obaseki, via a statement says she just might be doing harm to herself than good. His statement reads,

”AN APPEAL TO #RITA_DOMINIC – From Don Pedro Obaseki.

My dear star, sister & colleague’, Rita Nwaturocha (aka Rita Dominic & once upon a time, Rita Lamb), I’ve had the inglorious privilege of reading about your “Table Shakings” and the reactions they’ve elicited.

Ma, humility is a virtue, and caution ain’t cowardice! I remember a few times around 2003-2006, when you used to “sweat” at Chico’s in Bank Olemoh, roaming from one set to the other, while recording TWO or THREE movies at the same Time!

Don’t be like Chichidodo, the proverbial Ghanaian bird in Ayi kwe Armah’s novel. Chichidodo was the bird that hated shit, but feeds only on the maggots from Shit.

Please dearie. Leave that Table alone. It is fragile and you are right atop it dressed in your Sunday Best! But the table floats on the Lagoon of filth and jaded black trash. You may slip headlong into the murky lagoon, and because you’ve maligned all that may be willing to lend you a helping hand, you may be left to drown with no one to help pull you ashore.

Life is a trickster. Let it not prank you. Learn that there’s nobility in humility. No be beans, my dear. As a free-spirited “young man”, I offer this ” small advice”, albeit with NO PREJUDICES. Your journey from Choba & Delta Park in Uniport to where you are now is worthy of commendation. Don’t waste it on an ego-trip.

Please remain assured of my most esteemed regards.

We still love you.

-Don Pedro Obaseki, MBA, PhD.

Rita Dominic

Not only Don Pedro, blooming Nigerian movie producer, whose first three movies have been blockbusters, Ayo Makun AKA also had something to say to the actress.

“Rita Dominic actually made her point. I had a chat with her on other issues barely 24 hours before her post. I guess it was just a general statement to better the industry. I am only a baby producer in the industry with 3 movies that made it to the cinemas with good box office records/Guinness world records. Judging from where we are coming from, I’m impressed with the growth of Nollywood.

“Unlike Hollywood, with little or no budget we make cautious effort to tell our stories. I am also open to any positive criticism that we help me improve in these line of business. If anyone describes my work as hype, i will let the person understand that the hype man’s job is to get everybody out of their seats and on the dance floor to have a good time. But you have a right stop dancing when you are not feeling the music. In other words hype without hardwork would only last for a short time. I won’t be hyping The Yoruba Demons without content. I don’t care about what other producers are taking to the cinemas’.

“The Cinema owners have their criteria and standards for screening any movie they show to the public. All i do is stay in my lane and do what i am supposed to do. Anyone have the right to say Timi Dakolo is a better singer than Davido, but they are both appreciated seperately in the showbiz world based on their different markets. So the seriousness and technicalities you expect from the movie 76 by Izu Ojukwu, should be different from an Ay’ 30 Days in Atlanta that is designed to make you laugh’ AY said in an interview with Linda Tv.”

#BBNaija: Nina’s boyfriend reveals reason why he deleted her photos from his Instagram

Earlier we brought to you the report that one Collins, who is the boyfriend to a housemate of the Big Brother Naija House, Nina deleted all traces of his affiliation with Nina and put his account on private.

Nina, is currently in a hot romantic albeit on-screen relationship with her fellow housemate, Miracle and it was safe to assume that Collins grew tired of seeing all that (although he had previously been very supportive).

However, in a twist, it seems Collins may not be done with her due to a little conversation which was revealed via twitter.

A twitter user with the handle @elitetatafo tweeted; Nina’s boyfriend Collins, have deleted all traces of Nina from his IG page…The young man cannot do again..

The post got some reactions, as one twitter user @BolintinDude wrote; When your gf cheats on you alone it can cause depression. But when she’s does it on live TV and is even begging the guy even when he doesn’t want to do ?? bruhhhhhhhhhh

Nina

Then another user @Amyraahs who may have had a conversation with collins posted a screenshot of their convo and said that was his reason

Collins wrote; I only removed the pictures cause different blogs were taking them and attaching different stories that are not true

So the question now is, are they still together, we can only wait till Nina’s time in the house comes to an end to be able to answer that .

Don’t compare success to how much money, houses or cars one has – Williams Uchemba

Former child actor and UN Ambassador, Williams Uchemba who recently came under fire from social media users for showing off his newly acquired US home and a car which he concealed the plate number, took to Instagram advising youths to shun the pursuit of money as a path to success.

Read his post below;

To My Generation: Please don’t ever compare Success to how much money, houses, or Cars one has. Success is simply DISCOVERING the assignment you were sent on earth to do and FINISHING it before you die. Focus on the vision(assignment) and God will give you all the provisions(funds, cars, houses…etc) you need. God doesn’t sponsor any project he didn’t ask you to do.

Please don’t mistake success/impact with how much money one has because great men that changed the world(Mandela, Martin Luther King jr., mother Theresa etc) do not have any record of how much money they had in their accounts even after death.

Don’t envy anyone because you feel they have more money than you; at the end of the day you that is focused on your purpose and assignment on this earth might be more successful than those with earthly treasures. #seekfirstGodskingdom

#BBNaija: Meet Nina’s Boyfriend, Collins… He is done with her!

Nina's Boyfriend

So, it looks like Nina’s Boyfriend, Collins is totally done with her, as he has deleted all traces of Nina from his Instagram page.

Nina BBNaija.

Big Brother Naija Housemate, Nina is in love with her fellow housemate, Miracle, and she’s said this multiple times on the show, that she was originally on the show for the money, but as of now, she is helplessly in love with Miracle.

Today, she is trending after she gave a oral job to her former strategic partner, Miracle.. and most folks on social media think it’s “a normal” thing between lovers, while others feel it shouldn’t be done on live tv.

Now, her boyfriend, Collins, seem to be fed up with the whole shenanigan, as he has deleted all her pictures from his social media page.

Collins who had initially been supportive of her has now deleted all traces of her from his Instagram page, changed his handle and put it on private.

Despite her confession that she loves him and would move back to him when she eventually leaves the house, Collins seems to have had enough of her love display with fellow housemate, Miracle.

Nina's Boyfriend

This comes after she gave a shoutout to his mom last night to mark Women’s day, writing..

“Happy International Women’s Day to my boo’s mummy, Collins mummy. I love you”

Recall that Nina had once revealed that it was Collins who had urged her to audition for Big Brother.

The 27-year-old who has previously dated director Darren Aronofsky, actor Nicholas Hoult and Chris Martin, hates physical contact, including shaking hands, as she’s so worried about catching a disease.

She said:

“The truth is when I look back at my sexual past it was always with boyfriends.

I talk like I like it, but I don’t really do it. I am mostly also a germaphobe. I have made it this far without an STI. D**k is dangerous.

If I was at the point where I could get an STI, doctors have already been involved. That is how much of a germaphobe I am.

I am not in a relationship. I am making it clear that I have not had sex in a very long time. I would like to have a relationship, you know. It is hard out there.”

I share in the sorrow, agony of parents of abducted girls — Aisha Buhari

Aisha Buhari during her speech in Abuja on Thursday said she shares the sorrow and agony of parents of the abducted Chibok and Dapchi school girls.

She expressed the concern in Abuja on Thursday while delivering a speech she titled: “Leave Our Daughters Alone”, to mark the 2018 International Women`s Day.

“As a mother, I share (in) the sorrow and agony which the parents are going through up to this moment. I am aware of the efforts being made for the release of the remaining Chibok girls as well as the recently (abducted) Dapchi girls. It is my sincere hope that the efforts will yield positive results” she said.

The wife of the President said that the abductions had further exposed the long-standing evil perpetrated against women in the society. She, therefore, called on relevant stakeholders, especially the media, to stand against the “disturbing issue. It is a disturbing issue for which we must put heads together, pray, speak out, show concern and ensure that the situation come an end.”

She, therefore, called on Nigerians, especially the media to join the campaign against all forms of abduction and maltreatment of the Nigerian woman. Mrs Buhari said it was unfortunate that celebration of the 2018 International women`s day came with pains and agony following the abduction of the Dapchi School girls. She also expressed concern over the use of young girls by insurgents to carry out suicide bombing.

She, however, congratulated Nigerian women for successfully marking the Day and prayed for greater opportunities for the Nigerian woman. The wife of the president also prayed for Nigerian women to have equal opportunities in governance as their male counterparts.

In her remark, the wife of Vice-President, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, said the 2018 event came in a very happy and worst situation considering the progress made by Nigerian team at the winter Olympic as well as the abduction of the Dapchi girls. Mrs Osinbajo also called for equal opportunity to the women.

Pastor impregnates two sisters in Delta after ‘Fake Deliverance”

Pastor impregnates two sisters

A 41-year-old randy pastor (name withheld) of a new generation church in Ugbolu Community, near Asaba, Delta State, has allegedly put in family way, two sisters after conducting “Fake Deliverance” for them.

It was gathered that in 1998, the said pastor had, in Enugu State, allegedly committed same act when he was said to have slept with a mother and daughter during an all-night service, and was subsequently banished from the town after he was subjected to severe beating by angry church youths.

Sources said the two sisters, undergraduates of the National Open University, Asaba study centre (names withheld) had been regular visitors to the pastor’s church in the Community, and most times, attended his deliverance service before the bubble burst.

According to our informed sources, trouble started in December 2017 when the two sisters sought the pastor’s spiritual help for an undisclosed spiritual attack, a situation he allegedly respond to and hoodwinked them into doing deliverance during night fall, an offer the unsuspecting sisters willingly accepted without hesitation.

It was further gathered that the pastor allegedly “arranged” a room within the church premises where the two sisters, native of Asaba were ordered Unclad, and in the process, were offered water in a big bucket to bath with.

While the purported deliverance process lasted, the pastor, an insider said, suddenly went into uncontrollable act, leaving his manhood blown out of his white garment dress, and in a twinkle of an eye allegedly buried it into one of the victims vagina.

A member of the church Celestine Okoh, told our reporter that the lid of the pastor’s illicit and purported deliverance act was blown open last Sunday, during church service when the two sisters, in what appeared to be mild drama, stormed the church with some hired thugs and in a fit of fury, allegedly dragged the pastor out before they started beating and stoning him in the process.

In the melee, his church was set ablaze by the angry youths who also ensured that those who supported him were disgraced and beaten to stupor.

Final year first class UNIBEN student commits suicide

A 500-level Computer Engineering Student of the University of Benin, identified only as Adam, on Thursday evening, hanged himself inside his room.

According to reports from his close friend, Adam attended classes as usual that very day, returned home, charged his phone, washed his clothes, then went inside his room where he hanged himself within 20 minutes of locking the door.

His lifeless body was only discovered when his sister, who came from Ekenwa campus, forced the door open. The deceased is said to be a sufferer of Bipolar disorder (once known as manic depression or manic-depressive disorder).

The reason behind this action could be as a result of so many things but as we heard, he’s a first-class student, so academic backwardness isn’t really the reason.

Subomi Balogun @ 84: Portrait of a Rare Bridge Builder

Subomi Balogun

It is difficult, if not out-rightly impossible to read the story of his life and not be eminently inspired. This is for the simple reason that each chapter of that life leaves sundry lessons. It is all about the impact, visionary commitment to courses, transparent honesty in dealings with others, as well as diligent pursuit of purpose, human limitations notwithstanding.

In fact, say it that Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun (CON), the man they call the Asiwaju of Ijebu Christians, is a lesson to life, and you would be stating the obvious. From the perspective of entrepreneurship, he is a front-liner, visionary leadership, he is there; manager of men and materials, he has a tall reputation; a philanthropist of note the same way he is an outstanding bridge builder.

For example, it was his great entrepreneurial foresight that saw to the birthing of one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions, FCMB, at a time of seeming impossibility. An individual seeking and obtaining a banking license was unheard of at the time, but Balogun did not allow popular sentiments to smoulder his tall ambitions.

He envisioned, he prayed, but he also undertook shuttle diplomacy when it mattered, cried when the need arose and equally appealed where it was necessary. The point really, is that he has learnt to give to life, whatever is genuinely necessary to achieving the desired results.

Born on that auspicious 9th day of March in 1934, Otunba Balogun’s citation is like a scroll out of the hall of fame, gripping and intriguing no matter from which perspective it is told. Yet, it would remain incomplete without a reference to a few number of Nigerians who stood in support of this visionary’s mission to accomplish his ambition. In every interview, comment or discussion the Otunba Tunwase, who is also the Asiwaju Onigbagbo of Ijebuland, Dr Michael Olasubomi Balogun will always appreciate such people, eternally remaining grateful, sheer humility, virtue, rarely found in men of such exceptional worth.

At 84 therefore, Otunba Balogun is a portrait of very many treasured virtues. He epitomises principled living, genuine love, detribalisation, and the eloquent apostolic dictum that one good turn deserves another. His bridge-building antecedents are well known, and has lent tremendously to the quest for inter-ethnic cohesion in the country yet, Otunba Balogun’s life-story shows that nothing could be impossible to anyone who believes and that there is light on the lips of a nine-year toddler.

When frustrations came over obtaining needed resources from then existing banks, it had taken a seemingly innocuous rebuke from his nine year old to awaken his faith. The boy had innocently observed whether his father could not establish his own bank, if the one he had worked for denied him what ordinarily, should be his. That was the kick he needed to jumpstart a bank of his own. Today that modest idea has grown to a mighty oak, sheltering hundreds of thousands of people, covering the interests, needs and care for millions of people, offering direct employment and making available to them, resources to multiply their incomes and keep families running.

Ever so grateful to God for what his life has become, Otunba Balogun is humbled by the realisation that he is neither the biggest nor the smartest, yet, swims in a rich measure of divine grace. This is the reason behind his unwavering philanthropic gestures. He cites his ascendency to the stool of Asiwaju of Ijebu as example, affirming that this was given even when his mother was the Iyasuna of Muslims in Ijebu. According to him, “it is God who has been doing this that I was also made the Asiwaju of Ijebu Christians So, it is in appreciation of what God has done for me and so I have thrown myself into the service of the people. I am always joyous to do good and to have people around me. And the good Lord has always been faithful to me”.

Having been accepted across philosophical, political and religious divides, he has thus far operated as a bridge builder of sorts, deploying resources as regularly as required. In fact, in the area of development of the town, he has played a sterling role, falling back on his being picked by the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Ijebu land and requested to rally round others to develop his people and the community.

A few years ago, he transferred the Otunba Tunwase Paediatric centre to the University of Ibadan, a project in which he had sunk billions of naira. That handover was on the auspices of his 80th birthday. On the spiritual plane, he is not just satisfied with the tag of Asiwaju of Ijebu Christians but is thrilled by initiatives that advance the course of Christianity. Part of this are the Annual Christmas Carols in December and Prayer sessions and Thanksgiving Services in January in his country home of which he is a convener. Reflecting on the prayer sessions recently, he observed: “The tradition I met when I took over from the first Asiwaju of Ijebu Christians was that annually Christians and even Muslims would kick-start the new year by going to offer prayers in the house of the Awujale and after that they would come to the house of the Asiwaju. The significance is to give an opportunity for the Asiwaju to join everybody in thanking the Almighty God for what He has done for all of us in the year before and asking him to continue to guard and take care of us for the new year. I think that its significance is not just for Christians but for all people. The Yorubas say if you give thanks for the favour done in the past that you will receive more favours”. These sessions have grown in popularity with attendant extensive positive impact.

In fact, his reference to God is so well known around the town that it has become the tradition of local musicians to start playing the tune “Nipa ife Olugbala ki yo si nkankan”, (which means by the love of the Saviour, there shall be no evil) anytime and anywhere he makes his appearance. For the Baba Oba of Ijebu-Ife, it is the good Lord that has been protecting and guarding His people and it is only natural to sing back in appreciation.

“I genuinely worship my God. In every home of mine, I have a chapel and on my birthday, I go there first to thank God for mercy received and to pray for further mercy. The secret of it is that I throw myself into the hands of God trusting that He will do the best for me”, he says. Otunba Balogun may not be so much swayed by the tag of a politician as he appreciates the appellation of philanthropist. He is a living proof that it is in giving that one secures the channel of receiving. And that for Nigeria to remain, there has to be prayers.

“The first thing I will say to Nigerians is to be conscientious in praying and having faith that having prayed, the good Lord will answer our prayers. There is a lot that Nigerians expect from the country but my prayer is that the good Lord will guard everybody including our government, so that everybody will do the right thing. Between friends, family and universally, we should put God first and seek His face and everything else will be right”, he admonishes.

A holder of the 1959 LLB Honours, of the London School of Economics (LSE), he was called to the English Bar in December 1959. He was trained as a Parliamentary Counsel by the Government of Western Region of Nigeria at Whitehall and the British Parliament in London, and started his Civil Service career in February 1961 in the Ministry of Justice, Ibadan. He was later transferred to the Federal Ministry of Justice as the Assistant Parliamentary Counsel of the Federation, where he remained until July 1966. For nine years, between 1966 and 1975, he was the first Principal Counsel and Company Secretary to the Nigerian Industrial Development Bank (NIDB). During this period, he received extensive training at the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), otherwise known as the World Bank, and its private sector affiliate, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) both in Washington DC. He also received extensive training from leading stockbrokers, investment banks and merchant banks in London and New York.

Subomi Balogun

There were other outstanding moves within, but Otunba Balogun was seconded to Icon Limited (Merchant Bankers), as an Executive Director following its establishment. During this time, he represented Icon on the Council of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) and he distinguished himself in the handling of many capital issues on the Exchange. He resigned in December 1977 to set up his own company, City Securities Limited, which became the first institution in Nigeria to combine Issuing House and Stockbroking businesses under one roof. In less than two years of the establishment of City Securities Limited, he was cited as “a most distinguished and leading Baron of the Nigerian Capital Market”.

The Asalu-Oba of Ijebu-Imushin, Otunba Balogun in 1979, single-handedly set-up the first wholly Nigerian owned merchant bank, known as First City Merchant Bank Limited. Under his leadership as Chairman and Chief Executive, First City Merchant Bank Limited (FCMB) in its first twenty years of existence, experienced unprecedented steady and un-interrupted growth, earned national and international recognition as a market leader in investment banking and capital market services.

Otunba Balogun was the first in Nigeria as at 1987 to endow a Professorial Chair in a University, this at the University of Ibadan. He has equally donated to several altruistic causes in a number of institutions such as the Olabisi Onabanjo University (formerly Ogun State University), Yaba College of Technology, African Leadership Forum, etc.
Otunba Balogun took over, reconstructed, refurbished and perpetually endowed the maintenance of The Children’s Emergency Unit in the University Teaching Hospital, Ibadan which has now been named after him, the “OTUNBA TUNWASE CHILDREN’S EMERGENCY UNIT”. He has donated to the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital a newly built and fully equipped air-conditioned 40-bed Children’s Centre, made provision for the perpetual maintenance of the Children’s Centre, and actively provided financial assistance to various local institutions, individuals and other charitable organisations.

To date, he has awarded over 300 scholarships to many Nigerians at secondary and tertiary levels; established an umbrella organization known as “Otunba Tunwase Foundation” to cater for all his philanthropic endeavours and services to the community. Under this Foundation, and on his 60th birthday, he commenced the construction of a special gift to the nation – the “OTUNBA TUNWASE NATIONAL PAEDIATRIC CENTRE.” Otunba is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management, a holder of the Degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) University of Ibadan and a Merit Award holder of several organisations. In terms of traditional titles, he is the Baba Oba of Ijebu Ife and the Asiwaju of Ijebu Christians amongst others.

In November 2000, he was conferred with the National Honour of “Commander of the Order of the Niger” by the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Otunba Balogun as an author, a prolific writer and a distinguished opinion leader was also at one time a member of the National Presidential Advisory Committee on the Recovery of the Nigerian economy.

He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers, the Nigerian Institute of Management, and the Chartered Institute of Bankers, a Former Deputy President now Life Vice President of the Nigerian British Chamber of Commerce, Council Member of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Chairman, Primrose Investments Limited; Chairman, Bluechip Holdings Limited; Chairman, Swiftdrill (Nigeria) Limited, Chairman, Primrose Properties Investments Limited and Director of a number of other companies.
